Retro-grocer Green Grocer and Café offers smalltown, old-time touch by Sandra Landen Machaj CORRESPONDENT
There was a time before big box stores started carrying groceries, when shopping for food meant a visit to the local grocery store in your neighborhood. It was a time when you knew the grocer by name and he or she in turn not only knew your name but was familiar with the types of food that you purchased for your family. The Green Grocer and Café, Williams Bay, is reminiscent of those grocery stores and a place where once again the staff will get to know you. About 10 years ago, local residents Jennifer Veith and Dawn Marie Mancuso considered opening the Green Grocer on Geneva Street in Williams Bay. “Dawn Marie and I are business partners in the Clearwater Spa, located in the historic Bay Centre building on Geneva Street in downtown Williams Bay,” Veith said. “When we realized that the space adjacent to us was available, we began to discuss the possibility of opening a grocery store in that space.” With their other business right next door, it would be convenient to manage the two businesses from the same location. While the partners continued to run the spa, they developed the idea for the Green Grocer. “We began to plan the opening of our own unique grocery and café where we would serve the types of food we enjoyed. That is organic foods without unnecessary additives,” Veith said. “With my business experience and Dawn Marie’s food service experience working at Subway, we felt we could develop a successful Green Grocer Store and Café.” It appears they were right. The two pursued their plans and the Green Grocer and Café became a reality.
Step back in time
Walking into the store is a step back in time. Located in the more than 100-year-old building at 24 W. Geneva Street the store has brick walls, a tin ceiling, and the natural wood floors just as a grocery store would have looked in this space in the early 1900s when the building 6

was erected. Every inch of space is filled with a variety of foods that shoppers need to produce high quality and healthy meals for their family. “Our purpose for the café part of our business, was to provide fine food to be enjoyed here in the store or at our outdoor tables,” Veith said. Their customer base grew as those planning to spend a day at the beach would come in and order their picnic lunch for their family to enjoy while they spent a relaxing time in Williams Bay. Boaters, too, came into the store to purchase lunches or a choice of cheeses and crackers and other snack foods to enjoy while cruising around the lake. While nearby Lake Geneva is busy and dynamic with a large number of swimmers and boaters from the area and out of town, Williams Bay, on the other hand, is a smaller, quieter location where it is easier to tie up the boat as the piers are not as busy as those in downtown Lake Geneva. The beach is just as sandy and accessible as Lake Geneva but again usually with fewer people attending, giving it a more relaxing vibe. Parking in the Williams Bay area is also more easily found with parking lots across from the municipal pier and the beaches.
All from scratch
Pictured along the walls inside the café is the menu board offering a variety of sandwiches, salads, pizza, and soups all made in house. “We make it all from scratch,” added Veith. Melissa Mennenock is the cook who does most of the cooking along with Jane Larson, Jennifer’s sister, who joined the staff about 5 years ago. “Jane is now one of the owners as she purchased some of Dawn Marie’s stock,” said Veith. While there seems to be a number of customers lining up at the deli section at most times of the day, it is especially during the lunch time that the café is really busy. Making a choice from the variety of items offered is often difficult. The café is well known for its soups, made fresh each day. “Our tuna salad, egg salad and chicken curry salad are among our best sellers,” according to Veith. She said the chicken curry salad is an especially tasty treat and sells out quickly. With a touch of curry for flavor it gives the chicken a unique taste. “Because we sell out so quickly of these items everyone must be

proficient in creating another batch when needed,” added Veith. Their egg salad is made from Yuppie Hill eggs. While not organic, they are locally produced. They create smaller batches of their salads because they always want them to be fresh whether they are being purchased in the morning or at dinnertime. Each day – or several times during the day depending on customer volume – additional batches may need to be produced. The menu board lists a variety of special sandwiches, salads, and wraps along with smoothies that are made to order. The special $5

wine by the glass of the day is also listed. Along with the homemade salads and soups that are so popular with customers, the butcher’s meat case is filled with a variety of cheese choices and meats for sandwiches. “We use only Boar’s Head meats. They are not organic but they are not made with a variety of unhealthy fillers,” said Veith. “They are the healthiest we can offer.”
Organic groceries
While many people come in for prepared foods to eat there or take with them to the boat or beach, other shoppers are there for groceries for their home. All organic vegetables, most of them from a farm in Delavan, are available during the growing season. They are displayed in a prominent position in the middle of the store. A selection of grass-fed beef, Amish chicken and bison, all low fat items, are available to take home and cook for your family. A complete line of spices and seasonings – all of them organic – line the shelves. A wide selection of organic dairy products is also available. For those who require gluten-free products and mixes, the Green Grocer carries a large variety of products to make your favorite foods without gluten, including bread mixes and pancakes. The plethora of wines is easily noticed from the time one steps through the door. There is a large display of wines to your left and a display of Collectivo organic coffees to your right. The Green Grocer has a large selection of wines from around the world including some from New Zealand, Europe, and California. “We deal mostly with small wineries through our vendors,” said Veith. Therefore shoppers will find unique wines here that aren’t seen in the bigger wine stores that may deal in the larger, more advertised brands. At Green Grocer, the owners are not looking to duplicate what the larger stores carry but to introduce customers to some special wines with unique flavors from smaller wineries. There are a number of varieties of red and white wines, sweet or dry, available.
Green and growing
The Green Grocer is becoming the little store that grew and it continues to grow. About two years ago, another space in the building adjacent to the Green Grocer became available and Jennifer, Jane, and Dawn Marie hastened to add the space to their business. They opened the Green Vine, a small cocktail bar located in the rear of the grocery store. Here with kitchen tables from the 1920s or 1930s, customers may sit and enjoy a cocktail.

While they have a complete liquor license they limit their products to a few special brands of spirits and cocktails. The spirits offered are handpicked by the owners and frequently have a connection to the area. “We carry Tito’s vodka not because it is made here but because Tito has a house in the area,” said Jennifer Veith. “We also serve Brown Dog Whiskey because it is from Burlington.” Additional space opens into the Green Grocer but is a separate business – Steamers Coffee Shop run by Ann and Greg Clausen. It is not surprising to see customers from the coffee shop enter the Green Grocer to shop after enjoying their morning coffee. And the opposite is also seen – customers from the Green Grocer stopping for a cup of coffee after completing their shopping or picking up a cup of coffee
Fair skies ahead Walworth County Fair celebrates 170th birthday
The 170th Annual Walworth County Fair returns to the fairgrounds in Elkhorn on Aug. 28 and runs through Labor Day, Sept. 2. The annual festival puts the spotlight on agriculture in the area and gives the county’s youth a chance to shine. Often local 4-H members, the youth raise and show animals along with competing in multiple other contests to highlight farming and home-crafted goods and food. The festival is the largest county fair in the state and is a “dry” festival, with no alcohol served on the fairgrounds. The fair also hosts the largest demo derby in the state. Along with the agriculture judging, the fair features a large carnival, Kiddieland, Log Cabin demonstrations, Barnyard Adventure, live music, food vendors and more. Opening ceremonies for the fair will be at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 28, on the Park Stage. The annual Fairest of the Fair competition finals are set for Sunday, Sept. 1, on the Park Stage.

entertainment, harness racing, horse pulls, the Nick’s Kid Show, Learning Coop, Log Cabin demonstrations, racing pigs and more. The Barnyard Adventure gives kids a chance to explore the workings of the farm. Children can pick apples, gather eggs, milk Helene the Holstein, drive a tractor, and harvest vegetables in the garden. The fair’s Barnyard Adventure has won numerous awards from the International Association of Fairs and Expos, the umbrella fair organization of all fairs across the country. The Barnyard Adventure Stage is in Kiddieland next to the Barnyard Adventure Tent and the Pony Rides and hosts multiple family friendly acts all day long at the fair.
The Barnyard Adventure Tent has hands-on activities for the kids, including a corn and soybean bin, honeybee display, canning demonstration, classes on hydroponics and cloning, and other educational activities. Barnyard Adventure requires the help of about 25 to 30 volunteers to guide the children and their families through the various stations of “From Seed to Supper.” The job of the volunteer is to help the little farmers maximize their experience by making sure that each simple step is completed.
BUTTERFLY BARN
Kids at the fair love the Butterfly Barn as they try to catch one of the winged creatures and learn about their habitat and lifecycle. The barn is filled with all the foods butterflies love, including amaranth, butterfly bush and goldenrod. The butterfly barn was built for indoor plants and about 250 butterflies. Around May, the Walworth County Fair will receive a shipment of caterpillars and nourish them into butterflies for the fair. Dozens of adult butterflies also are ordered; so there will be plenty in the barn during fair week.

Headlining at the fair this year are country band Home Free on Saturday night and Christian rock band Newsboys United Sunday night. The Newsboys were scheduled for the fair in 2018, but severe weather cancelled the concert. Tickets for both concerts are on sale at walworthcountyfair.com. The Kenosha County Fair promises thrills, chills and five days of farming fun when the annual event returns to the county fairgrounds Aug. 14 to 18. The fair puts the spotlight on local agriculture and features the county’s best youth farmers in many of the competitions. Kids from grade school to high school show their animals and compete in agriculture-related contests throughout the five-day run. The county fair and kids go hand-inhand and there are plenty of kid friendly activities to keep families busy throughout the entire run. From hands-on activities, to carnival rides to kiddie pedal tractor pulls, there’s always something for the younger crowd. 14
The annual Children’s Parade, for kids 14 and younger, steps off at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 16, at the southeast end of the fairgrounds, near the fair office. Onsite registration begins at 9:30 a.m. at the Fair Office. The Children’s Scavenger Hunt is Thursday, Aug. 15. For kids age 12 and younger, the hunt begins at 10 a.m. and wraps up at 2:30 p.m. Kids can pick up their clue sheets at the ticket gate when they enter the fairgrounds.

The Discovery Barnyard hosts daily educational exhibits and the petting zoo, which is open from 9 a.m. to noon, 1 to 3 p.m. and 4 to 8 p.m. (6 p.m. Sunday) daily. Kids can also be a “Farmer for a Day” at the Barnyard Adventure Show. The attraction lets kids play at milking a cow, feeding a pig, baling hay and other farming “chores.” The Antique Farm Machinery Exhibit offers fairgoers a chance to see the tractors, engines and machines from days of old. is time to step back out of the 21st century and return to the days of old and travel to the town of Bristol in the year 1574 to join in the fun and revelry as the people await the arrival of Queen Elizabeth and her entourage. The arrival of the queen was an important SPIRIT of GENEVA LAKES
event, and residents from the young maidens to the elderly, wealthy residents and the knights with shining armor prepared for the special visit. The Bristol Renaissance Faire celebrates the 16th century visit of the queen on the 30-acre fairgrounds just off Interstate 94 near Kenosha.

Upon entering the fair, visitors are immersed in the world of 1574 and become part of life in Bristol, where young maidens with flowers in their hair can be seen dancing around the Maypole and street performers entertain all day long. The atmosphere is active and noisy as minstrels stroll through the streets playing their instruments and a variety of entertainment venues perform on 20 stages scattered throughout the park. Dress for women at this time required them to wear a hat in public and that their dresses be long enough to cover their ankles. The upper class men also dressed flamboyantly with leggings and a decorative tunic top. Their heads also usually were covered by a fancy hat. While the residents of Bristol are dressed in the styles of the time, many visitors also come wearing the period clothing, ready to truly embrace the 16th century. It is sometimes difficult to distinguish the cast of Bristol from the visitors who wander the fairgrounds. For those who might not have appropriate wear in their closet, Renaissance gowns and attire are available for sale at the many dress shops.
Fish and chips, Cornish pasties (meat filled pies), mushroom burgers or anything mushroom and the ever-popular turkey drumsticks are among the favorites offered. The fair also features a favorite nonalcoholic drink of the 16th century, sarsaparilla, a root beer type drink spiced with a trace of licorice. A food stand that always seems to have the longest lines is the one that specializes in cheese fritters. The crispy bites filled with melted cheese are a favorite of many. Just as in the days of old, loud and lusty pub crawls are another activity to enjoy. The crawls are led by a serving wench, who takes groups on a tour of the fair’s best watering holes. Those on the pub crawl can choose from a variety of 20 beers on tap, mead or gluten-free cider at the establishments. Tickets for the pub tour may be purchased online for $45 or at the city gates. Tours are scheduled at 11 a.m., noon, 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. on Saturdays and noon, 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. on Sundays. Adults only.
Eat, drink and be merry
A true highlight of the day is to cheer the knights as they display their skills. Each knight is dressed in his armor decorated with his colors. The plumes are attached to his helmet and again found adorning his horse. Seated atop his well-groomed steed, the knight will perform a variety of skills as the queen watches. With spectators cheering loudly, the event will end with the knights competing, as they attempt to topple each other from

took her own life in 2009, the Labor of Love Music Festival features her favorite genre – Bluegrass music. In 2019, the event brings in Trampled by Turtles with special guests Useful Jenkins, and offers food trucks, beer and wine, face painting, magic show, a balloon artist along with a butterfly release. Trampled by Turtles, an American bluegrass/folk-rock band from Minnesota, has released eight albums. The Minnesota-based band featuring six members has appeared at music festivals nationwide while garnering spots on the US Billboard charts on several occasions. The music festival, meanwhile, costs $30 for admission with all proceeds benefiting suicide awareness, prevention and education programs. Past beneficiaries include Hopeline, a text-messaging crisis service; and Marquette University, where scientists have used the funds to research the cause of mental illness. Additionally, Catholic Charities, which has mental health programs, has also been a beneficiary, among other established programs.
Initial launch
Just Live, Inc., the volunteer nonprofit organization, started in 2009 following the death of Wilson, who was heavily involved in the Town of Wheatland community. Joanne Ross, who has attended every Labor of Love Music Festival, said at last year’s event it was imperative to support the Wilson family and show up.

The 39th annual Art in the Park, sponsored by the Geneva Lake Arts Foundation, will be held on Saturday, and Sunday, Aug. 10 and 11 in Flat Iron Park, downtown Lake Geneva. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Free parking and shuttle service are available both days. The shuttle will run from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. with pick up at the northeast corner of the Home Depot parking lot, 550 N. Edwards Blvd. and drop off at U.S. Bank, 303 Center Street. The shuttle runs continuously with pickups every 20 minutes. Visitors will have the opportunity to view and purchase some exceptional art in a beautiful lakefront setting. They’ll also have the chance to enjoy live music and dine at one of the many Lake Geneva restaurants. Art in the Park is a juried fine arts show featuring more than 80 artists exhibiting a variety of media, including clay/pottery, fiber, glass, printmaking, jewelry, metal,

Welding has been a part of Corey Francke’s life from an early age. “My father was a welder and began to show me how to weld when I was 5,” he said. “Watching him repair or create new pieces encouraged my interest in the field.” As a youth he enjoyed working with his father, who encouraged him to learn more
about welding. He became more proficient in the art, so it is not surprising that he chose it as a profession. After several years working for a variety of companies, Francke opened Corey’s Welding at 1950 Wisconsin St. in Elkhorn. “I was fortunate to work with very good welders who taught me a lot about proper welding,” Francke said. “ Each of the welders I worked with had special skills
that they shared with me. The last company I worked for did some military work. I began as a basic welder there and in three years I was promoted to supervisor. It was then that I decided that I was ready to open my own business.” Francke said he uses traditional and newer techniques in his shop. “Some of our work is done in-house, that is if the items can be moved here easily,”

Items such as boats and automobiles that need repairs are brought into the large, open bay. “A large amount of our work requires that we go to the job,” Francke said. “We attach our trailer with the welder to the truck and take it, along with all necessary tools and materials, to the jobsite.”
Ornamental work
Francke specializes in creating ornamental ironwork. During the last several years, there has been an increase in creating distinctive furniture incorporating metals and woods together to produce products that are very different than those usually seen in traditional stores. Francke’s process includes taking the metals and creating legs for tables and chairs and using huge blocks of quality wood, such as black walnut, and turning it into a dining/side table or a bar. Some of his pieces make a real statement, such as the clock attached to a tall slab of finished wood. He offers a variety of wood and metal furniture pieces and is

Francke designs and makes the gates, and he works with customers to create attractive and unique looks that give off the welcoming vibe that they are seeking. Spiral staircases can be used indoors or outdoors and can be customized to fill a limited space that might not accommodate a traditional stairway. The iron can be as simple or fancy as one prefers. Spiral stairways can be manufactured in a variety of sizes. They can be
tucked into a corner, but remember the larger the diameter the easier it is to climb, especially when carrying packages. Francke also can produce many different types of railings. Today, much of the new construction in private homes and in office buildings takes on a modern look by building a stairway using iron, steel or aluminum. The cool, clean lines give stairways and railings light, floating looks, and they’re not as heavy as the traditional wood railings. Costs for railings are given upon request after the materials and

From simple to intricate
Stairways designed out of iron may feature balusters made from simple vertical posts or more intricate designs on each baluster. Steel or aluminum stairways often are seen with clean, horizontal rails rather than vertical supports, another way to add a light, floating look. “We take pride in our work and strive for excellence in every part we make,” Francke said. “We will custom make a variety of items, such as fuel tanks, hand rails, railings, welding repair work, aluminum welding, stainless steel welding and more. Call for a free estimate. We are always glad to set up an appointment.” And there is never an end to learning more about his craft. Francke continues to take classes in learning more and becoming more qualified to produce an even higher level of quality work. Although he only has been open in Elkhorn since September, his shop has developed a strong customer base. “Many of our customers are those who have been pleased with our work and return,

The Lake Geneva Jaycees will host the 57th annual Venetian Festival Aug. 14 through 18. The festival takes place at Flat Iron, Library and Seminary Parks in downtown Lake Geneva. Venetian Festival features a weekend of family entertainment including a craft fair, carnival, water ski show and local cuisine including a brat stand and beer tent. The celebration is capped off on Sunday, Aug. 18, with a traditional Venetian-style lighted boat parade followed by the area’s largest fireworks display high above Geneva Lake. The Lake Geneva Jaycees Entertainment Pavilion, which is located in Flat Iron Park, will be the center of the live music shows. The Entertainment Pavilion is open Wednesday through Friday from 5 p.m. to midnight and Saturday and Sunday noon to Midnight. People must be 21 to enter. Where to find farmers markets in the Geneva Lakes area
L
ike fresh produce that pops up in the bright spring sunshine, area farmers markets bloom each May and June throughout the area. The markets offer a variety of products, but none so sought after as the fresh produce from local farms, grown within hours, sometimes minutes, from the table. Area residents suddenly have the opportunity to purchase fruits and vegetables grown locally, some from certified organic farms. Pasture-fed and organic meats are also available at some markets, along with raw honey. Herbs and flowers round out the overwhelming selection, along with homemade soap, teas, nuts, wild rice, eggs, specialty coffee, crackers, sauces, maple syrup, kettle corn, mushrooms, sausage, and cheese. Bright-colored canopies blossom on town squares, in shopping center parking lots, and in scenic parks along rivers and lakes. The season typically runs May through October, although opening and closing dates vary by location. According to market devotees, food from the surrounding area is fresher and therefore tastes better. There’s no comparison between a tomato picked green and trucked hundreds of miles to one picked ripe and bursting with the flavor of the land. Vegetables raised on certified organic farms are grown without pesticides. Farm-cured meats seldom have added

preservatives like nitrites and nitrates. Buying from area farmers keeps jobs local and the growers retain more of the profits because fewer middlemen are involved. They raise a greater variety of plants and animals, and therefore offer more diversity to patrons. These days, many small food producers have espoused growing methods reducing their environmental impact as much as possible. Some involved in area farmers markets represent operations that have been in business since 1860. Others are relatively new and want to share excellent or unusual food items. Some of those items may include heirloom tomatoes. Many shoppers have heard of “Big Boy” and “Beefsteak” varieties, popular in grocery stores and for backyard vegetable plots for many years. At farmers markets, however, tomatoes include multicolored heritage varieties and boast new flavors. The flesh offers a tighter texture with fewer seeds and juice, and the flavor is sweeter. A slice of co-jack cheese topped by a slab of heirloom tomato and baby lettuce or spinach on an onion bun is a fabulous summer lunch item. Fresh, locally grown plants, produce and products are available at farmers markets throughout the area. Here’s a listing of the locations, dates and times of those markets:
Burlington The Burlington Farmers Market is at Wehmhoff Square on the corner of Washington and Pine streets on Thursdays through October from 3 to 7 p.m. Live music accompanies the market from the park’s gazebo. The market offers a large selection of produce and locally sourced items and the opportunity to interact with the producers,

Spirits of Norway Vineyard owners Randy and Sandy Larson stand by some of their Brianna grapes, which are used to make their white wines.
AREA VINEYARD FINDS ITS NICHE Tucked away at the end of a backcountry road in the Town of Norway a few miles north of Burlington sits a small vineyard with a big following. The Spirits of Norway Vineyard isn’t big, about one acre, but that’s all owners Sandy and Randy Larson need to produce their “fruit-forward” wines. “It’s just us most of the time,” Sandy said. “We have help at harvest time,” Randy added. “We post on our Facebook page that we need volunteers and people step up. Sandy puts on a nice lunch for everyone and everyone who volunteers is gifted a bottle of wine.” Originally, the vineyard was going to just be a garden, Randy said. “Sandy wanted a garden and I asked her what she wanted to grow. She said some tomatoes for salsa and maybe some grape vines,” Randy recalled. “So, she did some research online about grapes and took a trip out to a local store, The Purple Foot, for a book on growing grapes. “Karen (Lau) owner of the store SPIRIT of GENEVA LAKES
asked Sandy what she was going to with her grapes and Sandy said, jams and jellies and Karen said, ‘Why not wine?’ And that’s was pretty much it.” Randy said he and Sandy felt led to create the vineyard. “We would go to church and the scripture reading would be about wine in some way. ‘I am the vine.’ ‘Go forth and produce.’ It was clear this was what we should do,” Randy said. You can grow grapes in Wisconsin? Randy said many people are amazed that grapes grow well in Wisconsin. “We grow cold-climate grapes which do really well here,” he said. The Larsons grow Marquette, Brianna and Petite Pearl grapes to produce red and white wines. One of Randy’s passions is teaching people about grapes and the winemaking progress and the vineyard often hosts tours and classes where he and Sandy can share their knowledge. Randy is also the president of the Wisconsin Grape Growers Association. “When I became president one of

my first ideas was to have a wine week in Wisconsin,” he said. “And this year that is happening.” Wisconsin Vineyard Week was held in July. The event featured classes, wine tastings and other educational opportunities for those interested in wine. Winning awards For a small winery in Wisconsin, Spirits of Norway has racked up an impressive list of awards, including a gold medal in the 2018 San Francisco International Wine Competition for “Attitude Adjustment,” which is part of the vineyard’s Estate Collection. “That’s not supposed to happen,” Randy said. “A small, boutique vineyard from Wisconsin isn’t supposed to win gold medals in San Francisco, wine country.” The Larsons say their wines win awards
because they are different and have a broad appeal. “Our wines are fruit-forward and people like that,” Randy said. “We use tanks to age our wine, not oak barrels, so our wines are more fruity than oaky, which people like,” Sandy said. “We do use oak chips, because wood is an important component to wine, but our wines are more fruit focused.” “When I ask people what they drink they often tell me, I don’t drink reds, I don’t like the taste and they can’t identify what taste they don’t like, but it’s usually the oak. And then they try our reds they’re amazed. I can’t tell you how often I’ve hear someone say, ‘That’s the first red wine I’ve liked.’” Buying wine The vineyard can’t sell wine onsite because the property is zoned agricultural,
so Spirits of Norway’s retail store is online at its website. Some area liquor retailers and grocery stores also carry their wines. “Gooseberries (in Burlington) carries our wines and Timer’s in Racine; Muskego Beer and Liquor and Malicki Piggly Wiggly’s in Racine and a few others,” Sandy said. “We encourage people to ask their local liquor and grocery stores to carry our wines so they can purchase them.” The Spirits of Norway wines have been in high demand as word of the vineyard has spread, often through word of mouth, the Larsons said. Their wine truck can often be found a local festivals and events. “It’s a mobile billboard for us,” Sandy said. “Churches and festivals will buy our wine and we let them use our truck to serve it. We keep everyone up to date as to where the truck is on our Facebook page.”
