Whether it’s a wild carnival ride, a freshly powdered funnel cake or a fresh-faced 4-H’er with a husky heifer, the annual county fair is a feast for the senses and a link to the area’s rural past. Kenosha and Walworth counties will host fairs in August offering several days of activities ranging from people watching to demo derby. The month also offers plenty of other activities besides the fairs. Al’s Auto Body and Arboretum in the Town of Walworth has plants for everyone from the “Kmart shopper” to the lakefront homeowner who wants the instant “wow” factor, said owner Al Ritchey. Ritchey started the arboretum about 23 years ago on the property where he grew up with his eight brothers and sisters at W6866 N. Walworth Road. Initially, he said, he began landscaping as a way to keep the auto body shop looking tidy, and the arboretum blossomed from there. Ritchey has operated the auto body portion of the

business for 38 years. His dad, Robert Ritchey, a heavy construction worker, began the business doing mechanical and car work during the three to four months out of the year when construction halted. Al Ritchey, Robert and Verniel Ritchey’s eighth child, became involved in the business around 1980 – a year before he graduated from Big Foot High School. Ritchey started building his first truck when he was 13 or 14 years old and completed it before he finished high school. “I got to drive it to school my junior year,” he said.

Al’s Arboretum features more than 500 varieties of hostas – suitable for Kmart shoppers on up to lakefront property owners looking to wow their visitors.

as a necessity since the family couldn’t afford to buy a car for each driver. The body work too, he said, started out of necessity as Ritchey worked on his own vehicles beginning with painting bikes as a kid. “I was the spray bomb king,” he said. The auto body business expanded as Ritchey started working on friends’ and family members’ cars, and they referred their friends and family. In 38 years, he said, he has operated on referrals and never advertised the auto body business. He disputes the notion that an auto body shop and arboretum don’t go together. Ritchey said he sees former auto body customers, now in nursing homes, come back to see the arboretum. “I’ve outlived my customers,” he said.

His property is on an upland conservation lot – perfect, he said, for “the bullet-proof perennial hosta.” Hostas are hearty plants that even the most inept of gardeners will have success with. “If there were a man’s plant, it would be a hosta,” he said. “You can’t kill ‘em. You can plant ‘em upside down. It don’t matter.” About five or six years after he started planting hostas, Ritchey launched Hosta Fest. Now in its 17th year, the event draws a couple of thousand people to the rural location to tour the arboretum and purchase plants over two weekends – Memorial Day weekend and the weekend after Memorial Day. He said the business is now about 50-50 auto body vs. arboretum. The difference, he said, is the arboretum requires constant care – work that doesn’t pay off until someone buys a plant – while any work that’s done in the body shop is money in the bank. “The arboretum is a maintenance monster,” he said. Al and Jill Ritchey’s kids – twins Max and Tessa, Sam and Nell – and two of Ritchey’s siblings – Mike Ritchey and Bonnie Grether, help with the plantings. Mike Ritchey said he stays away when the crowds show up during Hosta Fest. He jokes that he doesn’t like to loiter, and his brother tells him not to take up a parking spot.

More than 500 varieties The arboretum has 500 to 600 varieties of hostas, which might seem astronomical to a lay person. But, Ritchey said, it’s a

drop in the bucket compared with the more than 4,000 varieties of hostas that are registered. “The options and varieties are endless,” he said. People who are familiar with hostas will note the nuances such as rippled or smooth leaves, multiple colors in the leaves and tones of yellows, greens and blues, Ritchey said. “There is a lot of difference, but there is a lot of similarities,” he said. The varieties of hostas include one registered in the Ritchey’s name – compadre. Ritchey said he can’t take credit for “creating” compadre, but rather he “caused” its creation indirectly with the use of a commercial pre-emergent. Compadre is a small variety – about 14 inches high and 16 to 20 inches wide – with a yellow and green streaked leaf. Ritchey said the mutation happened from using a commercial fertilizer, and the variety has withstood the test of time. “It’s been proven 20 years now,” he said. He said many hybrid or mutated varieties will revert to a previous form and should be tested for about eight years to ensure the variety will endure.

Something for everyone The arboretum offers a variety of sizes and price points to please all shoppers. Size range from the smallest, Nellie’s Orphan, to the largest, Wow Now, Ritchey said. Nellie’s Orphans were born when Ritchey’s youngest daughter, Nell, – too young to really help but good company while her dad was working in the greenhouses – began picking up rocks and sticks and “planting” them. Ritchey began giving her small scraps of plants that he planned to discard. She began planting them, and the ones that took are sold as 2- to 3-inch starter plants for $2 or $3. The next size up is the collector size, followed by a landscape size, and the largest is Wow Now, which as its name indicates, is ready-made for the “wow” factor from the moment it goes in the ground, Ritchey said. The price increases with size, and the Wow Now plants are in up to 20-gallon pots and about $100. “We want everybody to feel welcome and have an opportunity to take more than five plants and not bust their budgets,” he said.

Flea market vendors embrace people, all things vintage

Elkhorn Antique Flea Market at the Walworth County Fairgrounds landed on a particularly hot day in June, but that did not stop customers or vendors from displaying enthusiasm for a wide range of antique items. The fairgrounds host more than 500 antique vendors during three summer events. Each vendor had a different approach for his or her booth at the June event. While items and interests varied across vendors, they all shared a passion for preserving antique items for generations to come. Local vendor Gary Wallem has run a booth at the flea market for about 20 years, though he has attended the event for much longer. Wallem owned a retail business in Elkhorn for several years before deciding to stick to mobile retailing, including flea markets. During the flea market, Wallem negotiated prices and chatted with

customers in an entrepreneurial manner. “People. I love networking with people,” he said. Wallem has a long-standing love for antiques. “As a kid, we’d climb into the town dump in Williams Bay, looking for antique stuff. I hope that the younger generation can enjoy this stuff and keep it around like I do,” he said. Wallem and other vendors described a love for history and the preservation of the ways that people used to live. “I love history and finding items that are from a certain time period. My booth is sorted into eras,” said third-season vendor Barb Shukin. “It brings a lot of joy to people.” Shukin offers reworked pieces along with originals. “Some are pure, some are restored. If I do any reworking to a piece – for example recovering a chair – it is with period-appropriate vintage fabric.” In recent years, antique items have become increasingly trendy. While most of the vendors said they were pleased vintage items continue to remain in circulation, some of the vendors said they didn’t concern themselves with how popular something is.

“I don’t worry about trends. I buy what I love. I don’t even like to look through magazines,” Diane Passi said. Passi owns a popular store in Barrington, Ill., called Checkpoint 19 Antiques. The store has nailed down a sought-after industrial look that transcends styles and eras. “My husband and I love telling a story with our pieces. People visit our booth, and they become mesmerized,” Passi said. Though Checkpoint 19 Antiques does not try to be trendy, it is clear the shop’s rustic and repurposed vintage style is a hit with people of all ages. Checkpoint 19 Antiques possesses an effortless style that keeps younger people invested in vintage items, Passi said. On antique flea market event days, the fairgrounds quickly fill up with customers and attendees often bargaining over prices. In one case, a lengthy deal negotiated only a $2 price difference. The remaining flea market dates for this summer are Aug. 12 and Sept. 30. The flea market runs from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., rain or shine. For more information, call 414-525-0820.

Mail Boat jumpers have one-of-a-kind experience

On the rainy date of June 19, Lake Geneva Cruise Line’s U.S. Mail Boat tour continued on despite the dreary conditions. As the boat departed on its lake-round tour and mail delivery service, tourists aboard The Walworth worriedly chatted about the safety of the two young mail jumpers. But mail jumping in rainy conditions is nothing new – this summer marks the 146th season of the excursion boat series. Originally, the mail boat services were a

necessity because of the rough dirt roads around Geneva Lake. Nowadays, mail jumping is carried on for tradition and nostalgia. “My grandma’s cousin was one of the first women to mail jump on the lake,” said second-year mail jumper Katie Theisz. “It’s a pretty extensive tryout. You have to be gutsy, athletic and charismatic with the tour.” Theisz described her day-to-day activities aboard The Walworth. A mail jumper stands on the catwalk with the

mail, jumps onto the pier, runs to deliver the mail into the box and jumps back onto the moving boat before it fully clears the pier. They also must give a historical tour of the entire lake during the 2.5-hour excursion, as well as highlight modern businesses and restaurants along the way. Each of the mail jumpers is off script. The active mail jumpers dread rainy days. Theisz explained, “It’s really hard when the piers are wet. I fell on the Bonnie Brae pier last year – I’ve never fallen in the water though.” If the mail jumpers cannot leap back onto the boat in time, the boat must circle back for them. Both of the mail jumpers on a recent trip charismatically described the enjoyment behind their unique job. “People mess with us all the time, in good fun. One man put

baby oil on his pier so I’d fall,” said fourth-year mail jumper Thomas Peck. Describing the best part of the job, he said, “We love when a homeowner is waiting on the pier for us. We live for that.” Theisz said giving the tours has helped her gain confidence in her public speaking abilities during college. “I love to entertain people, and tourists come from all around the United States,” she said. “It’s hard to find another job where you can be surrounded by a gorgeous lake, beautiful homes and work outside everyday. I couldn’t find a better job.” The season takes place from June 15 to September 15, and the Mail Boat runs daily from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Prices vary depending on age: $38 for adults, $36 for seniors and $22 for children. n Aug. 11 and 12 it may be the sound of music radiating through Flat Iron Park that may draw people to the area, but once there it will be the artwork on display that will grab visitors’ attention and encourage a long stay. Flat Iron Park will come alive over this August weekend with a juried art show sponsored by the Geneva Lake Arts Foundation. The show titled Art in the Park has been presented in Flat Iron Park for many years. according to the show’s

organizer Brad Ziegler. This year marks the 38th annual Art In The Park. “I have organized the show for the past three years and each time it is a new and exciting experience,” said Ziegler who eagerly awaits this year’s show. Ziegler and his wife, Tina, are also artists whose craft is the production of jewelry. The show will present the work of 80 artists from around the country. It is a juried show, which means the artists must apply to exhibit at the show. A group of judges will review the works and choose the ones they consider the best. “We have art from 12 different categories,” said Ziegler. In addition to paintings and photographs, there are also works from other artistic categories such as stained glass, clay, fiber, handmade paper, graphic, printmaking,

woodcarvings, sculpture, leather works, mixed media, jewelry and pottery. With such a variety of artistic creations organizers intend the show to offer a broad appeal. “I would like to see the exhibit up to 100 entries, but Flat Iron Park is not large enough to comfortably display the works and still allow room for visitors to enjoy browsing through the show and admiring all the works,” said Ziegler.

The members of the jury begin the difficult choice of reviewing and judging each piece of art as the submissions are received. Each juror gives the work a score and in the end all the points are added and those with the highest numbers are selected to participate in the show. This year participants will come from as

far as Florida and Arizona and will present a variety of artwork representing many styles. Although the park may be a bit small, it is a picturesque spot to house Art In The Park. Located on the shore of Geneva Lake, the site itself is an artist’s dream, facing the blue water of Geneva Lake alive with a variety of boats, stand-up paddleboard users, kayakers, sunbathers and swimmers enjoying the waterfront. Visitors are able to not only enjoy the beauty of the artwork but also the beauty of the lakeshore. Each of the artists will bring a small tent to display their work. The tents will protect the paintings from the sun and from rain in the event of inclement weather. “The police estimate that 5,000 to 6,000 visitors visit the display each year,” said Ziegler . Many come from the Lake Geneva area

Encouraging art

In addition to the artists participating, there is the Brunk Pavilion where current members of the Geneva Lake Arts Association may display some of their works. Up to 50 members will participate in the member’s display. These works are offered for sale as are the works displayed by the guest artists in the juried art show. Art In The Park is not just a place for adults to enjoy fine artwork, but also a place to bring the children to encourage them to appreciate and learn more about art. There is a special place located in the Flat Iron Park Gazebo that is devoted to kids – that is kids of all ages. In the gazebo, Geneva Lake Arts Association president, Nikki Marsicano will direct the children in creating their own art project, which they will then take home with them. A variety of art supplies have been donated to allow for the children to work with a variety of media to create their art. The gazebo and its activities are sponsored by the Neal and Dotsy Hefferman Foundation and the Lake Geneva Rotary Club. The music stage will host a variety of musical groups that will provide “art show music” throughout the day, according to Ziegler. Some of these groups will be from the local high school music department and others will be professional musicians.

Spending time outdoors and meandering through the park enjoying the artistic displays and the music, it will not be long until visitors are ready for some food and drink. This year, just as last year, Lefty’s Food Truck will be on site to provide lunch or a snack. Lefty’s, from Elkhorn, specializes in Chicago-style hot dogs. If hot dogs are not your choice they do offer a variety of other items. For others who would prefer an indoor, sit-down meal, there are many choices within walking distance of the park. If you are concerned about attending Art In The Park because of the vast number of people who descend upon Lake Geneva on summer weekends, there is no need to worry. Ample parking can be found in the Home Depot parking lot, located near the intersection of highways 12 and 50. From there a shuttle will transfer visitors to or from the parking lot and downtown Lake Geneva. The shuttle will make continuous trips from the parking lot to downtown from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and it is offered free of charge. The shuttle will run throughout the day rain or shine. with the purpose of encouraging individual artistic growth and excellence. It fosters a community appreciation of the fine arts through the arrangement of shows, monthly programs, lectures, demonstrations and workshops. A volunteer organization, under the direction of an elected board of directors, the Geneva Lake Arts Foundation supports and encourages all forms of art and cultural activities. Funding comes from a variety of means, including membership dues, gallery fees, sponsors, fundraisers, and the proceeds from the annual Art In The Park. The foundation features member artists in several theme shows each year. Paid members are allowed to display their work at Gallery 223, located at 223 Broad St., Lake Geneva, in the member gallery shows. They may also display work in the member’s tent at the annual Art in the Park show. Work displayed is available for sale to accommodate those looking to find a new and unique piece of artwork for a home or office. The permanent home for the Geneva Lake Arts Foundation is at 223 Broad Street in downtown Lake Geneva.

Geneva Lake Arts Foundation is also involved in a mentoring program with other nonprofit organizations to foster the love of art to others. The member artists participate by donating their time to work with youth and sometimes adults on a specifically designed art project for the group that is supported by the foundation. Art in the Park is a once-a-year show that should not be missed. Bring family or friends and enjoy a beautiful day along the Geneva Lake shore. Log cabins and their docents preserve history and bygone ways of life

oth the Walworth County Fairgrounds and Burlington Historical Society continually preserve two log cabins from the 19th and 20th centuries. Docents and demonstrators play a crucial part in keeping the spirit of these historical buildings alive. Walworth County Fair’s Log Cabin and Burlington’s Pioneer Log Cabin in Wehmhoff Square exhibit their pieces of history in differing ways. Burlington’s Pioneer Log Cabin is open from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturdays from mid-May through mid-October, as well as by appointment. Docents memorize facts about the history of the cabin and highlight the lifestyle of people living in the 1850s. Historians estimate the cabin was built in 1850. developed a love of history. I was asked to be a docent, and I couldn’t say no,” Lena said. Lena has been a docent for about five years. Though she is a retired teacher, she continues to substitute teach when she can. As a docent, she dresses in periodaccurate clothing during her tours and said the history-comes-to-life approach was important. “It gets the kids really interested in history. And it’s fun,” she said. Meanwhile, demonstrators show off their trades at the Walworth County Fairgrounds. This summer, they cover a wide range of interests, from custombuilt farm toys to hand chair caning. One demonstrator, a rose gardener in Delavan, stirs the emotion of many visitors to his property. “My wife got cancer and she passed away back in 2005,” said Doug Amon, homeowner of the Stop ‘n Smell The Roses at N5088 Highway O. “When she passed away, I sold my business. She had a little garden out there, and I thought I’d plant some roses for her. It started out as 25 bushes.” Twenty-five roses soon turned to 50, and the garden continued to expand and grow. “Now there are over 400 rose bushes,” Amon said. “Some of the neighbors started to stop in and see what was going on, and that’s how it all got going. Later, I put up a gazebo and a little pond with a waterfall. Over a thousand people come through each summer.” Another docent, Larry Yanke, specializes in hand chair caning. “It’s a six-layer weaving process,” Yanke said. “You come out with a hexagonal pattern, and the seventh layer goes around the top to cover the holes. The trade goes back about 2,000 years. The ancient Egyptians did it.” Yanke, who has caned chairs for about 10 years, currently is working with several customers who are intrigued by this archaic trade. “It costs $80 to $90 per chair. I’m busy; I have five or six chairs to make right now,” Yanke said. After retiring, chair caning became his hobby. “I learned from a gentleman from Delavan who has been chair caning for more than 30 years,” Yanke said. Another custom builder, Richard Morgan, crafts farm toys. “I have been doing this for 25 years,” Morgan said. “At the fair, I’m going to have probably three different displays of mine. I have about nine different large scale displays that I show.” Morgan, who shows his custom- and scratch-built farm toys at many toy shows, is a regular at the Walworth County Fair’s Log Cabin.

“This will be the third year that I’ve displayed at the fairgrounds. I have a couple favorite displays that I do all the time – these are the ones that people ask for. One is my farm scene and the other is my truck display,” Morgan said. For other demonstrators, this is their first year demonstrating at the log cabin. One married couple, Christy and Dennis Pace, have a love for livestock. But it’s not just any livestock – they specifically raise Suri alpacas on their Beloit farm, Pacesetter Alpacas. “This is our 23rd year raising them,” Christy Pace said. “They’re a fiber animal, like sheep. We sheer them once a year and have their fiber processed. We also promote the animal. We would love to see more people get interested in raising them.” The Paces are bringing their product to the Walworth County Fair this year, which includes rugs, socks, sweaters and yarn. The alpacas won’t be making an appearance at the Log Cabin. “We’re just going to bring the product. There are other demonstrators in the cabin, and there’s not enough room to set up a pen for the alpacas,” Christy Pace said. The docents and demonstrators in Burlington and the Walworth County Fairgrounds exhibit extreme passion for their trades. Each docent and demonstrator has devoted time and patience into mastering their unique specialty. Whether that is an intense love for history or raising Suri alpacas, the log cabins offer it all. FAIR IS THE LARGEST IN THE STATE by Tracy Ouellette STAFF WRITER

The 169th Annual Walworth County Fair returns to the fairgrounds in Elkhorn on Aug. 29 and runs through Labor Day, Sept. 3. The festival has the distinction of being the largest county fair in the state. The fair is also a “dry” festival, with no alcohol served on the fairgrounds. “(We have) over 15,000 entries in the fair competitions, everything from quilts to cows,” Walworth County Fair General Manager Larry Gaffey said. The fair also hosts the largest demo derby in the state. The six-day county fair showcases agriculture in the county with an emphasis on the youth, often area 4-H member, who raise and show animals and compete in multiple other contests to highlight farming and home-crafted goods and food. Along with the agriculture judging, the fair features a large carnival, Kiddieland, Log Cabin demonstrations, Barnyard Adventure, live music, food vendors and more. Opening ceremonies for the fair will be at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 29, on the Park Stage. The annual Fairest of the Fair competition finals are set for 5 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 2, on the Park Stage.

What’s new?

Some of the fair’s new attractions include the Aug. 29 Flat Track Motorcycling Racine and the BMX Stunt Show, Gaffey said. Also new this year are the Moo-gician show on the Kiddieland stage, Swifty Swine Racing and Swimming Pigs in the

Kids of all ages can enjoy live entertainment, harness racing, horse pulls, the Nick’s Kid Show, Learning Coop, Log Cabin demonstrations, racing pigs and more. The Barnyard Adventure, which is free to visit, is a great place for kids to learn

about agriculture. Children can grab a basket to explore different ag stations in the Seeds of Supper Tour, earning “Barnyard Bucks” to spend in the Barnyard Adventure General Store. A visit to the Butterfly Barn is also a family favorite activity at the fair.

Special attractions

“C is for Celebration” when Sesame Street Live appears on the Grandstand at 3 p.m. on Sept. 1. Kids can sing and dance along with Elmo, Cookie Monster and Rosita during the interactive performance. This event does have a charge with tickets $10 to $20 depending on the seating. The fair will host musical acts on

Saturday and Sunday night, but the names of the band(s)/performers of this year’s headline acts were not available at press time. “We can’t announce our concerts until later because of contract restrictions,” Gaffey said. Musical acts scheduled to perform at the Park Stage during the fair’s run include the Fair Idol competition, Todd Green Jazz Trio, Jack Farina Big Band, Steve Meisner Polka Band, KR Bluegrass, Gary McAdams Band, The Britins, The Concrete Roots Reggae Band and more. High-flying action In the grandstand, the fun starts Aug. 15, when Digger Doug plans to conduct the third annual ATV/UTV Showdown. The event starts at 6:30 p.m. Digger Doug, a 20-year pro ATV/UTV rider, plans to showcase high-flying, moguljumping stunts. For race fans, the highlights on the Wilmot Raceway include the IRA Outlaw Sprint Series and the WingLESS Sprints and Bandits at the grandstand. Gates open at 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday with racing beginning at 6:45 p.m. There is an additional $7 fee to attend the races.

atson’s Wild West Museum has the largest collection of Old West memorabilia in the area, according to owner Doug Watson. The museum is just off Highway 12 on Potter Road in Elkhorn. It makes its home in a barn that was built in 1898. Collecting this vast amount of memorabilia definitely took some serious

time. “My interest in cowboys and the Old West goes back to my childhood,” Watson said. “As young as 5 years of age, I remember dressing in cowboy outfits while my twin sister dressed as a cowgirl.” While many children fall in love with the idea of being a cowboy, most move on to other interests as they get older. Not so for Watson. “I began collecting some of the memorabilia found here when I was 19 years old,” he said. And he has never stopped collecting. Fortunately, his wife, Ellen, also enjoyed collecting. Together they dreamed of opening a museum. The opportunity came when they were visiting relatives in the area. His grandparents lived in Elkhorn, so he had spent a lot of time in the community as a child. He and Ellen spotted an old barn that was scheduled to be demolished. It was part of what had been known as Oak Ridge Farm in the 1860s. “I knew the barn would make a perfect SPIRIT of GENEVA LAKES

museum, but it would require a lot of work,” Watson said. But they were not deterred.

Museum of their dreams In 1988 they purchased the barn and

began the job of turning it into the museum of their dreams. “I was also glad to be saving this barn from demolition,” he said. “Too many of the old barns and farms in the area have been demolished, losing the history of the area.” The next three years were spent rebuilding the barn, raising and supporting the floor and adding insulation and air conditioning so the museum could be enjoyed year-round. Then each of the display areas had to be constructed, a job that was customized to house the large collection. When the museum opened in 1991, it was as it is today — a journey into the Old West. Watson, dressed in his cowboy attire,

Watson enjoys telling stories about the times when these animals were found roaming from Wisconsin to the Rockies. “Most of these heads were given to me because the hunters only wanted the meat and did not want to mount the heads.” A huge collection of sparkling copper pans, teapots and ladles, such as those used by the pioneers traveling in their covered wagons, hang from the ceiling. “Most of these were purchased at swap meets or antique stores and were black SPIRIT of GENEVA LAKES

when we bought them,” Watson said. “It took a lot of elbow grease to restore them, but they are the first items most of the women visiting look at.” It is a collection that any cook would be happy to own, use and display in their own kitchen.

Lunch and learn “In the early days, I would invite groups of businessmen to bring their lunch and enjoy it here,” Watson said. “It was a good

way for them to learn more about the museum and enjoy the many displays.” Over the years it became a place for field trips for school groups, Boy Scout troops and bus tours. Watson began to offer lunch or dinner theater programs. His packages include general admission to the museum, a tasty luncheon or dinner of broasted chicken, green beans almandine or that favorite Western treat, baked beans, potato, fruit salad and a choice of coffee or pink lemonade. The meals are served indoors on tables covered with red-checkered cloths and set among the many displays of the museum, letting visitors become part of the Old West. Entertainment is included with music by KG and the Ranger. Or they can choose from a variety of characters such as Annie Oakley or Mark Twain to regale them with their stories. “Whenever we have a group in for lunch or dinner and a show, we close the museum to other visitors,” Watson said. “That way they can enjoy the museum up-close.” The museum is open seven days a week for bus tours, lunch or dinner groups or private parties such as birthdays or anniversary celebrations and school outings. Only one group is scheduled at a time so they receive adequate attention.

The rush is on Gold Rush exhibits are a big draw for

anybody who’s ever dreamed of panning

for gold as prospectors did in the mid1800s. The display of an entrance reveals just how small and tight these mines were. Watson will share stories about those times and the renewed interest in these deserted mines. And there is a bubbling stream where visitors can try their luck at panning for gold. The miner takes the pan and digs it into the stones that line the bottom of the stream. There is no chance of actually panning real gold, but some “fool’s gold” could be uncovered. All enjoy a trip into the general store. Old general stores were much smaller but still provided everything pioneers needed, from groceries to fabrics to new dresses. Surprisingly many of the items carried in the store were things we still need today: rice, beans, flour, sugar, baking powder and salt were found on the shelves. There are hundreds of tins that once were filled with these items. One of them was Ovaltine, although the packaging is much different. Another important part of life in the pioneer world was the blacksmith shop. In the Old West, horses provided transportation and were the precursor of the tractor, pulling plows to plant the fields. One corner is devoted to the medical practices of the time. Displayed is the shingle that was first hung by Watson’s father, who was a pediatrician in Elmhurst, Ill., where Doug Watson grew up. Riding into the sunset After 27 years of running the museum

and sharing his knowledge with another generation, Watson has decided to close the museum and decide what his next step in life will be. “After we close the museum at the end of this season, we will sit back and evaluate what our next venture will be.” Watson will continue to live in the farmhouse that has been on the property since 1881 and which he and Ellen have made their home. After working seven days a week, it may be nice to enjoy some down time. “I never considered my job work; it was my passion and a pleasure. I am most lucky and truly have been blessed. I grew up at a great time, in a great place, with a great family. I have managed to spend my life following my passion.” It is easy to see that the Wild West and the history of the time are truly his passion because his eyes light up when he shares his stories. So, as Watson moves onward, we extend that old cowboy wish, “Happy Trails to You” wherever your passion takes you. Watson’s Wild West Museum is located at W4865 Potter Road, Elkhorn.
