Hike Lake County challenge underway
The Lake County Forest Preserves has a challenge – or seven of them – for area residents and visitors. Grab your walking shoes and head to the trails to participate in the Hike the County program while enjoying fall breezes and autumn colors. Complete seven of 12 designated walks before Nov. 30 to earn a free commemorative shield for your walking stick or a zipper pull. Each year features different trails and a colorful new shield or zipper pull (while supplies last). Bicycling or horseback riding do not count toward the program. At each preserve, look for Hike Lake County logo signs at the preserve entrance and trailhead to get you started on the right route. To get started, you’ll need an official travel log, which can be found at www. LCFPD.org, to record your routes. Every walker needs their own. Let your canine companion join in the fun and complete the hikes with you. Record their name on your travel log and your dog will receive a free commemorative dog tag (up to three dogs). You can even purchase an optional Hike Lake County dog collar to hang it on.

AREA OFFERS A FULL SPECTRUM OF WINE EXPERIENCES
Those who enjoy sipping from a bottle of red, white or blush wine but find that a trip to the Bordeaux region of France simply isn’t in the cards right now needn’t give up their desires to visit a winery or vineyard. Wineries and fully functioning vineyards and orchards dot the landscape of the Geneva Lakes Area. In fact, wine afficionados don’t have to go far to find award-winning wines made from a variety of locally grown fruits. Visiting a local winery or vineyard can be educational and fun. Wine tours can be entertaining because some allow visitors to choose their own tasting adventure depending on their level of interest in wine, their budget and what they would like to get out of the experience. Some wineries and vineyards offer extensive tours of the harvesting and production aspects of wine-making. Others will give visitors a chance to mingle among wine barrels and witness the fermentation process. Still, some wineries or vineyards
may limit visitors to tasting rooms where they can sample select vintages. Thanks to the relatively short Wisconsin growing season, the types of fruits used – whether its grape, apples or pears – will be quite different from one winery to the next. According to viniculture experts from Professional Friends of Wine, grapevines are fairly adaptable plants that can thrive in a variety of soil types and temperatures. Soil, sun exposure, drainage, and topography all play roles in how the grapes will ripen and taste. The chance to support a local business is another reason to make a trip to a nearby winery or vineyard. These facilities often produce wine and sell it close to home. By supporting small business, consumers can contribute to the success and the diversity of offerings where they live. Wine tastings are an enjoyable recreational pursuit. Remember to drink responsibly, and join the mailing lists of nearby wineries and vineyards to learn more about tasting events and food
pairings. Here’s a closer look at three wineries and two shops in the Geneva Lakes Area.
ÆPPELTREOW WINERY AND DISTILLERY “ÆppelTreow” is Old English, and is a play on words for “true to the apple” or “apple truth,” according to owner Charles McGonegal. The name is pronounced “Apple true.” ÆppelTreow is Wisconsin’s only winery and distillery. It is well known for producing perry, which is pear cider produced in the English tradition. The pears are specifically to be used for producing perry, and offer properties and

flavors that can’t be faked by using other pears. McGonegal said he imagined ÆppelTreow as a fruit winery, but the facility produces cider, perry and spirits. “I think that Wisconsin can grow a better apple than it can a better grape,” McGonegal said. “I admire the folks growing their own grapes, but I find through personal experience they make very good brandy.” ÆppelTreow is at 1072 288th Ave., Burlington, and is a 25-minute drive from downtown Lake Geneva. APPLE BARN ORCHARD AND WINERY The Apple Barn, in Elkhorn, has been a favorite of customers for many years. Six generations of the Jacobson family have made their home on this land and continue the family tradition of farming the land and caring for their fruit orchards. Around 2004, the Jacobson’s introduced a new product that has become one of their most popular. “In the 1990s, my husband, Steve, began experimenting with wine making after he received a home wine-making kit
from his mother as a gift,” Judy Jacobson said. “As he experimented with making wines, he turned from making grape wines to experimenting with other fruit wines. As he became more interested in the various types of wine that he produced, we considered making a few wines to sell on site at the Apple Barn.” They began to produce fruit wines on site. What began as a hobby, then moved on to a small addition to the business. It didn’t stop there as the Apple Barn is now producing more than a dozen varieties of wine. The wines are made from fruits such as strawberries, apples, rhubarb, pears, and cranberries. While most people assume that these fruit wines would all be sweet, they are not “Our wines range from dry to sweet,” Jacobson said. “Most of the wines are in the semi-sweet range. “It’s always going to be different,” Staller said. “The wine is always going to change. You’re never going to get the same growing season, there’s always going to be a variety in how your wines are going to taste.” Staller produces more than a dozen varieties of wine and port using those grapes, and relishes every step. “I enjoy everything,” Staller said. “It doesn’t matter whether were picking grapes, bottling wines – I enjoy every aspect of it.” Staller Estate is at W8896 Highway A, Delavan. When purchasing a bike, visit a reputable bike shop and find the bike style and price range that will work best for you. Purchasing a bike for an adult can be a one-time purchase as a good bike, properly cared for should last a lifetime. An adult should only need to buy a new bike if he is spending more time on a bike, traveling on different terrain or just wants an upgrade. To keep your bike safe for riding, having a yearly service check with all needed maintenance taken care of is a must. Yearly maintenance checks are usually under $100, a small price to pay for safety. The best places to ride are on the many bike paths in the area. Riding on a path protects one from dealing with automobile traffic. In northern Illinois there are bike trails of various lengths. The trail from Algonquin to the Wisconsin border is a 25-mile trail that travels through Crystal Lake, McHenry, Richmond and up to the Wisconsin state line in Genoa City. Ride the entire trail or just a portion. Or if you are just returning to bike riding or taking your children on a ride, choose a shorter trail such as the 2.1 mile Libertyville Bike Path. Remember to take water or other fluids with to maintain hydration and a snack, especially if there are children, is needed. And always wear helmets no matter how adept at biking you are or imagine that you are.
Bike sharing
If you don’t have a bike but would like to ride there are bike share programs in the area. The Grayslake Bike Share program is a new community collaboration between the College of Lake County, Grayslake Area Public Library, and the Village of Grayslake to promote health, wellness and recreation. Grayslake has more than 20 miles of trails to explore on your bike. The bikes can be picked up and returned to five different bike rack stations throughout Grayslake. These include the College of Lake County, the Washington Street Metra Station, Downtown Grayslake and two other stations. The cost of using the rideshare bikes is $3 for the first hour and $1 for each additional hour. For information on using the bike rental program, visit the Grayslake Bike share program website at www.glpd.com. Bike MC is another way to rent a bike for a ride but this one is in McHenry County. With six stations throughout McHenry County, bikes can be picked up and returned at any station. The stations are located at McHenry County College, Crystal Lake downtown, Woodstock Metra Station, and Bike Haven in McHenry.

field with his mane blowing in the breeze, while his rider sits tall in the saddle and guides him along a trail, the desire to someday ride a horse becomes their dream. For Jennifer Ullrich of Johnsburg, who grew up in a family that enjoyed riding, she began to ride at a young age. So it was not surprising that her daughters, Samantha and Mickayla were also learning to ride early in their lives and now at the ages of 12 and 16 are seasoned riders who compete in horse shows. “Horseback riding helps to teach self -confidence and compassion,” said Ullrich. “Learning to ride also requires that one learns to care for the horse, including grooming and how to saddle the horse for the ride.” Because the girls have horses of their own, they find that they often spend as much time caring for the horses as riding them. When one cares for a horse, a special bond develops between the caretaker and the horse. The special relationship continues through to how well the rider and horse work together. They truly develop a friendship along with a working relationship. For those who do not have a horse of their own, riding is still possible by visiting one of the stables in the area. Many offer riding lessons that teach all you need to know to ride and care for a horse successfully. Becky Werfinger is the owner of the equestrian services at Chain O’Lakes State Park, 8916 Wilmot Road, Spring Grove. They are open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weather permitting. Reservations required. 815-710-7210 The equestrian trails in Chain O’Lakes State Park are open not only to those renting a horse but also to those with their own horses. There is a large parking lot to hold the horse trailers near the entrance to the park. If you haven’t been horseback riding before or if it has been a long time, this is the year to enjoy a special treat. “Horseback riding is addictive. The more you ride the more you want to ride,” Werfinger said. “The rider becomes one with the animal giving them physical, emotional and mental therapy while they enjoy contact with a live animal and enjoy being outside.” There are 8 miles of equestrian trails in the park, which allows for an enjoyable ride. The equestrian trails close to horse back riding when hunting season begins in October and then reopen after Jan. 1. Lake County Forest Preserves offers 65 miles of trails through the forest preserves that are open to horseback riding. While some of the trails are dedicated horse trails others are shared. Bring your own horse, there are no horse rentals at the preserve. A daily or annual permit is also required. For more information, visit LCFPD.org. The McHenry County Forest Preserves offers about 40 miles of trails at several sites in the county. The trails are open in winter if it is mild.
