Meet the authors along the Chain On a cold winter day there is nothing more satisfying than bundling up in front of a freshly lit fire with a good book and a cup of hot chocolate, or glass of wine, at your side. Even more enjoyable is knowing that the author is a local writer who resides here on the Chain O’Lakes, perhaps a neighbor or friend. It is often said that the beauty of the water
has a calming effect and encourages artistic and creative expressions. Perhaps that is why there are so many artists and writers found along the waterways. It seems there are a number of published authors currently residing in the area or who have made this area their home at some time. These authors have embraced a variety of writing genres so there is sure to be some of their works that are appealing to each reader. If you are looking for a historical novel, thriller, beautiful historical coffee table book, historical nonfiction work or self help book for teenagers there is at least one local author to please you. Here are a few local authors who have written interesting works that can be enjoyed when the cold days keep us indoors.

Cheryl Honigford Cheryl Honigford began her interest in writing while still in grade school. “My father would bring out an old Underwood typewriter and place it on the dining room table where I would pound out stories,” Honigford said. Today she spends her days working at Abbott Labs, then returns to her home in Antioch, where she is a wife and a mother. After all her work and family activities are completed, she retreats to her world of historical fiction “I love history, mystery and old time radio,” Honigford said. So it is not surprising that her three book series of historical fiction includes all of these elements. Set in the 1930s in Chicago, the stories include a historically accurate look at the city of Chicago in that era, a heroine who works in radio, a love interest and, of course, a murder. Completing these stories was a job that took a great deal of research. Her vivid description of the times, her intricate knowledge of the workings of old time radio, and her interesting characters, along with an interesting mystery will prevent the reader from putting down any of the books in this series. Honigford has completed three volumes in the Viv and Charlie series. While readers look forward to more of their adventures, Honigford is also working on a new series set in the 1920s. This one will focus on a female detective. The Viv and Charlie series includes “The Darkness Knows,” “Homicide for the Holidays” and “Dig Deep My Grave.”
M.P. McDonald Mary McDonald did not begin writing books until the 1990s when the family purchased their first computer. “Although I didn’t start writing until then I began making up stories as a child but never wrote them. It was the computer that made me decide to write a book,” McDonald said. Her first attempt was a romance novel that like many first attempts at novel writing, was never completed or published. As a reader she loved thrillers, especially Tom Clancy, so it is not surprising that it was to that genre that she was eventually drawn. She self published her first book in 2010. The story started as a short story for a contest and eventually turned into a 90,000 word novel. That novel “No Good Deed” can be downloaded free on Kindle. McDonald has 11 books in print with number 12 coming out in 2020. Her thriller series, known as the Mark Taylor series includes five books in the original series and a three-book spin off series. McDonald is known for her post apocalypse survival works known as the Sympatico Syndrome Series. The first of 6

the series is called “Infection,” which follows a group of people from both Chicago and Wisconsin as they work their way to an island near Green Bay and attempt to survive the deadly virus which has quickly infected 98 percent of the population. Infection is followed by “Isolation” and “Invasion.” McDonald, unlike many writers does not squeeze her writing in at night. She is a day writer who spends her time writing when her schedule permits. When not writing she is a part-time respiratory therapist at Aurora Hospital in Kenosha. She is married and the mother of two sons and a daughter,
Dennis Downes Dennis Downes is an Antioch resident who is well known for his art work, particularly sculptures and his historical research of native American culture. It was his love of native American history that lead to his studies of the Trail Marker trees that were used by the Indians who lived in the Chain of Lakes area and later settlers to find their way when traveling. Lisa M. Schab Lisa Schab is a Lake County author who has now published 18 books, began to write when she was in third grade but it would be many years before she became a published author. Her first published book was “My Dad is Getting Married Again.” “This book was inspired by my upcoming marriage to a man with children from a prior
marriage,” Schab said. “It was a way to help make the transition for all of us, to deal with the changes that would be occurring in our lives.” As a licensed social worker with a practice in Libertyville, Schab has continued to write books that will help children and teens deal with their tumultuous emotions in today’s world. Her books are workbook/ journal style. “These books help teenagers focus on their emotions. They teach coping skills to them,” Schab said. “They are also purchased by adults, especially by those working with children and teens. Journaling is a great tool to help with emotions and allows the teen to put his or her emotions into words.” Schab’s latest book will be published in January. Titled “Put Your Feelings Here,” it is a creative journal for teens dealing with anxiety. She will also be giving a workshop for parents at the Antioch Library on Jan. 23. on Thursday evenings first observing the boat races held off Blarney Island , then as a competitor in those races. As he became more involved he began to look for the records of the early racers and found out that many had been destroyed. Wanting to preserve the history of boating on the Chain O’Lakes, he began the momentous job of compiling that history. “I read every book I could find, spent hours at the historical societies of the area and interviewed private collectors,” said Lester as he presented his book at the McHenry Area Historical Society. His work of more than three years produced “The History of Boating on the Fox Chain O Lakes.” The more than 570 page book depicts the history of boating on the Chain from the 1800s until today. The book contains photos from the steam paddle boats that provided transportation from McHenry and Fox Lake to the resorts along the chain in the days before everyone had an automobile and before there were roads in the area around the lakes. The book uses a variety of photographs from old black and white postcards to colorful photos of sleek racing boats on the chain and includes historical records achieved by the racers. Follow the history of boating from the boat builders along the Fox River to today’s boaters on the Chain.

used by travelers to guide them on their way,” Downes said. One of Downes sculptures of the trail marker tree is fittingly found along Main Street in downtown Antioch. Fittingly, because Main Street, or Highway 83, was one of the Indian trails that had Trail Marker trees. Downes’ book, “The Trail Marker Trees,” is a beautiful work that will grace your coffee table. It contains the history of the Native Americans of the area and their work with creating the Trail Marker Trees. The photography is well done and a mixture of old photos of the trees and early Native Americans in the area along with newer photos of trees that still exist and were located by Downes. In addition to printed copies of the book, the updated version of the book is available for electronic readers. The updated version of the book is not available in hard copy at this time.

They come down coating tree branches and suddenly fall to the ground creating a wonderful world of white. They turn the area into a magical winter wonderland. Winter certainly is the most wonderful time of the year when fresh snow covers the ground. There are so many fun outdoor activities, most of which can be enjoyed by the entire family to get you out of the house and ready to enjoy winter at its best. “Winter activities don’t have to be
SNOW! elaborate or expensive to provide a great opportunity for the whole family to enjoy. Put all that fresh snow to good use, bundle up, get active and discover the great outdoors,” said Wendy Kummerer, Director of Marketing and Communications McHenry County Conservation District. “And don’t forget to bring a thermos of hot chocolate to enjoy when you are finished with your activity.” Some winter activities require very little extra equipment. Start with heading outside with children in tow and begin to build a snowman in the front yard. Kids who enjoy the Frosty the Snowman shows will be excited to have their own Frosty. When finished enjoy a cup of hot chocolate topped with a marshmallow. Build a snow fort and have a snowball fight if the snow is not so icy that the snowballs could hurt someone. Getting the kids out of the house and away from the electronic games and participating in physical activities is both fun and healthy, not only for the children but also for the adults.
Sledding

Many of us remember sledding as children. Grabbing our sled and heading to the nearest hill to slide down. Sometimes they were just small hills in your own or your neighbor’s back yard, while other times a trip to the local park or forest preserve added to the height and fun of a swift ride down the slope. Family activities such as these will make memories.

Looking for something a little more active? Snowshoeing is becoming more popular in this area.

Originally found in the far north regions of the U.S., Canada, and the Scandinavian countries, who are known for their deep snow, snowshoeing came to the Midwest with the arrival of the Norwegian immigrants. Snowshoeing, along with cross country skiing, were the main means of traveling in the winter when snow covered all in this arctic region. Snowshoeing requires a pair of snowshoes and a pair of poles to guide you on your way. They traditionally have a hard wood frame with rawhide lacings. When attached to your boots they allow for distribution of your body weight over a bigger surface, thus allowing you not to sink all the way into the snow. Both adults and children will enjoy the feeling of walking on the snow rather than in the snow. Snowshoeing is considered a way to hike. When there is 5 inches or more of snow on the ground, snowshoes can be rented at the Lost Valley Visitors Center, Glacial Park. They have both adult and children’s sizes.
Cross country skiing
Cross country skiing is to me the best outdoor activity in the wintertime. Dress in layers, pick up your cross country skis and head for the trails. Both the McHenry County Conservation District and the Lake County Forest Preserves have a variety of trails to accommodate skiers from beginners to advanced. Cross country skiing can be enjoyed by yourself or with friends

The horse trails close when they become icy for the safety of the horses according to Wendy Kummerer. “When the trails are right for snowmobiling that is 4 to 6 inches of snow on frozen ground and it is after December 10th the horse trails close for horses,” Kummerer said.”But if we have a mild winter and the snow melts and there is no snow prediction, the trails open again for horses and close for the snowmobiles.” So it is necessary to check for conditions on a daily basis.
Down hill skiing
Down hill skiing is available just over the state line in nearby Wilmot. Wilmot Mountain has been a fixture in that area since 1938. Today with 120 skiable acres, 23 trails and seven lifts there are a variety of hills to keep one skiing all day. A children’s ski area is available. They also have snowboarding and a tubing hill. If downhill skiing is a favorite winter sport, spend a day out at Wilmot. Since they do make their own snow, they may be open when other winter activities who rely on natural snow are unavailable. For days this winter when it is not possible to enjoy the outdoor activities consider a trip to Glacial Park and enjoy a visit to Lost Valley Visitor Center. Enjoy the exhibits, use the binoculars to check for wildlife, or check out books, puzzles and activity pages in the Sandhill Study. On Dec. 14 enjoy a special event, Holiday at Grandma’s House. Held at the Powers-Walker house in Glacial Park from noon to 4 p.m. Watch holiday preparations from days of old. Step back in time and watch volunteers in historical attire prepare for winter and the holidays as they would have in the mid 19th century. Enjoy scents of cooking on the wood stove and see the fresh tree decorated as it would have been then with natural trimmings. Experience the beauty of the season as it was in simpler times. Then go over to the Lost Valley Visitor Center to create a one-of-a-kind historical pioneer ornament using materials found in nature. Create an ornament and take it home to hang on the tree. All ages welcome and there is no charge to participate in this activity. Winter does not need to be a time when one is confined to the house. With so many

Take a step back in time Antioch’s Dickens Holiday Village returns Each year the Antioch Chamber of Commerce hosts the Dickens Holiday Village in the downtown area. The village is a public art project run completely by volunteers. Tours are available for large groups and Walking Brochures are available at the Dickens Welcome Center at Hannahs on Lake Street for a self-guided tour. For more information on the village and/or volunteering with the project, visit AntiochChambere.org. The Antioch Chamber also hosts the Kringle’s Christmas Village. The display is indoors at 510 Orchard St. in downtown. The indoor showroom is open from Thanksgiving Day through New Year’s Day, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Kids of all ages will enjoy dozens of animated oversized shadowboxes throughout the downtown.

Santa and the Christmas season arrives in Antioch with the Christmas Parade sponsored by the Village of Antioch. The parade takes place on Friday, Nov. 29, on Main Street between Park Avenue and Depot Street traveling North. The Tree Lighting Ceremony in front of Village Hall follows the parade. The Antioch
Community High School Chorus will sing carols and the Antioch Fire Department hands out free cookies and hot chocolate.

This year Santa’s Frozen Village opens on Dec. 1 for visits with children. Santa gets busier each year, so Santa will be available for free visits on Thursday and Friday nights from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Bring cameras to capture memories or ask one of the helpers to take a keepsake photo for a $5 donation. Santa’s Frozen Village features some of Santa’s Frozen Friends on the weekends from noon to 4 p.m. There is a $5 per person of all ages donation at the door (ages 1 to 99) on weekends. All the children receive presents.
