LOCAL MURALS DEPICT THE AREA’S HISTORY By Sandra Landen Machaj CORRESPONDENT

1869, the three-story Riverside Hotel became a staple on the Northeast corner of Riverside Drive and Elm Street, along the Fox River in McHenry. The hotel, which was built by John Wire Smith and D.S. Smith, used local materials including McHenry artificial stone made from clay retrieved from the local clay pits found in the area. The hotel was a resort hotel, a place where visitors to the Chain O’Lakes mostly from the city of Chicago, found a place to relax and enjoy the clean fresh air and the beauty of the Fox River and the Chain O’Lakes, as they escaped from the soot filled air of the city. Many came to McHenry because of the ease of arriving from Chicago on the train, which made its appearance in McHenry in 1854. They would arrive at the train station located in the area known as West McHenry. From here, the visitors would be transported to Riverside Drive, originally by horse and wagon, and later by automobile. At the waterfront, they would check into the Riverside Hotel and make arrangements for boat rides into the Chain O’Lakes to enjoy the beautiful lotus blossoms that

bloomed along the lakes. Grass Lake especially was noted for the heavy growth of the lotus flowers, so thick that lanes had to be cut through the flowerbeds to allow the boats to travel through. The Riverside was a hotel for the time, with a third floor ballroom offering high end entertainment and dancing and was also rented out for weddings and other events. Balconies lined the outside of the hotel, allowing visitors to enjoy the outside view when strolling along the balcony. These promenade balconies allowed visitors to completely encircle the building. Remember these were the days before air conditioning so a cool stroll around the hotel enjoying the fresh breeze from the river was often needed. The Riverside Hotel went through a number of owners and name changes over the years. It was remembered for offering the American Plan, which included three full meals per day for $2 per day with meals served in the dining room. For an extra 25 cents per person, the meal could be brought to their room. But nothing remains the same and eventually the balconies needed to be removed to allow for widening of the roads. With the advent of new roads in the area making it easier to reach the lakes and many families building their own summer cottages, the hotel was less prominent in

the vacation plans of the visitors. The use of the hotel changed. “A pub opened in the basement in 1942. Many think it was named the Fox Hole because of the Fox River but it wasn’t. It was actually named in honor of the World War II veterans who were returning home after serving their country, many spending time in fox holes,” shared Lianna Zimmermann, owner of the Fox Hole. On the back wall of the dining area is a special mural. which was created by McHenry artist Frances Bacon around 1960. The scene is of the Riverside Hotel as it looked around the early 1900s. Automobiles were becoming popular, especially the types pictured in the mural. You may note that the roads of the day were unpaved and were shared with the horse drawn carriages still found in the area. The owners of the automobiles did not like sharing the streets with the horses because of the excrement they left on the street, which covered the tires of the autos. The horse owners did not like the automobiles sharing the streets because the drivers would blow their horns and scare their horses. Clothing in various styles is depicted on the citizens pictured at the hotel, along the street, and driving their automobiles. When attending a fancy hotel such as the Riverside, proper dressing was expected,

whether traveling by automobile or horse drawn carriage. Oops watch for that horse on Elm Street.

Mural restoration

Outside murals of Fox lake When visiting the Village of Fox Lake, take the time to meander down Grand Avenue into the downtown business section of the community and enjoy the beauty of the three large, outdoor murals painted on the sides of buildings. These murals reflect the history of Fox Lake and its importance on the Chain O’Lakes. In 2019, the Village of Fox Lake as part of their Summer Art Series, commissioned three major murals to be placed in the downtown section of the community. All three sites were located on Grand Avenue, just east of Highway 12. An easy walk and a place to enjoy not only the murals but the downtown train station and the variety of businesses. Walking east on Grand Avenue from

Highway 12, the first mural one will encounter is the Pelican located on the east wall of the Lakes Realty Building, 16 E. Grand Avenue. This mural is 13 feet, 4 inches high and depicts a larger-than-life White American Pelican. The White American Pelican was chosen for this mural because the pelicans migrate north through the Chain of Lakes each spring, arriving in the area usually around March, before continuing their northern migration. At that time of year, the pelicans can be seen especially in Pistakee Lake and Fox Lake, This mural depicts the pelican on the shore of the lake, with a lotus blossom at his feet. Outside mural In McHenry Sinclair is also known for many local murals including one that she created for the VFW post in McHenry. The mural itself is 45 feet long and pictured is a gigantic bald eagle with its wings extended. The bald eagle is the national bird of the United States, so designated in 1782. The mural can be seen and enjoyed from Highway 120 in front of the VFW Post 4600.

Local muralist Elaine Sinclair said by the 2000s the mural was falling into disrepair. The paint was peeling and there were large cracks in it. “Some of the cracks were as large as 1/4 inch. The mural was painted in oils and the paints used at that time had too much linseed oil in them,” Sinclair said. Lianna Zimmerman who owns the Fox Hole did not want to see the mural disappear. “So, I hired Elaine Sinclair to come and restore it,” Zimmerman said. Sinclair was contracted to restore the mural. She met with friend and fellow artist, Lucy Tonyan, owner of the Studio of Art on Pearl St. in McHenry to request her help in restoring this huge, and very historical mural. They, along with some help from another local artist David Becker, began the job of restoring the work. “It was a huge project to restore because there was so much detail in the painting,” said Sinclair. “Restoring a mural is sometimes more difficult than creating a new one because you aren’t there to give the work your own look but to restore the original artist’s work.”

MURALS • CONTINUED FROM PAGE 5 known for their lotus flowers which grow in the lakes, especially in the shallowest of the lakes aptly known as Grass Lake where wild rice also grew. This mural now unfortunately needs restoration as some of the bricks that it was painted on needed to be replaced, taking out a section of the pelican. According to Elaine Sinclair who is the muralist who created this mural, she hopes that they will be repairing it soon. Further east on Grand Avenue the next mural will be seen. Located at 68 E. Grand Ave., next to the PNC bank and visible from their parking lot is the second of the murals created in 2019. The mural is on the west side of the building and is painted

in paler colors giving the mural a serene quality. It too features the lotus blossoms with many of its petals blowing in the wind. The lake with its vibrant blue water, matching the blue sky overhead plays an important part in this mural just as the lakes play an important part in the communities which surround them. Off on the right side of the mural are rowboats, which at one time were the most popular boats on the chain, used for transportation to and from the resorts and for fishing. Across the street at 71 E. Grand Avenue is the largest of the murals. This one covers the entire west side of the Dollar General Store and is filled with memorabilia of Fox

Lake as it was in days of old. The first scene is of downtown Fox Lake is it looked in the early to mid of 1900s. The autos depicted appear to be from the mid-1900s. The lotus blossoms are seen growing in the lake with a viewing stand above. The train, which arrived in Fox Lake in 1884, is pictured in the upper right-hand corner. While the Summer Arts Series creates new and different displays for the community each year. Some of them, such as the anchors that were painted, were later sold to raise money to benefit the community. The murals, however, remain a part of the city, to be enjoyed by residents and visitors alike.

Blues, Brews & BBQ lineup boasts new twists, stellar standards for 2022

heavily influenced the Stones’ vocal and instrumental stylings. Those attending Sunday will enjoy the rockin’ blues of Delta Rising at 1 p.m. and the Blues Hall of Fame-stature sounds of the Mike Wheeler Band at 3 p.m. While Todd, Nick and Wheeler have played the fest before, Lewis, Kashmir, Hot Rocks and Delta Rising are new to the Blues, Brews & BBQ stage. “We believe both the blues purists and those who enjoy the more rockin’ side of the blues will find reasons to love this year’s fest,” said Diana Mark, lineup chairwoman. “I love it because it’s all for a great cause.” The money raised at the music, food and craft beer fest supports numerous humanitarian and student leadership programs. In fact, the McHenry Area Rotary has provided $63,415 to 15 grant recipients since last fall, with the vast majority of those funds coming from past

A Delmark recording artist, an International Blues Challenge semifinalist and a Chicago Blues Hall of Famer. Add to that a Led Zeppelin tribute band playing that group’s finest blues, a Rolling Stones tribute band, an up-and-coming local band gaining a name for its rockin’ blues and, of course, the perennially most cheerful of blues bands around, and you’ve got the lineup for this year’s Blues, Brews & BBQ – though not necessarily in that order. This year marks the 11th annual Blues, Brews & BBQ. Coordinated by McHenry Area Rotary with D.C. Cobb’s-McHenry as premier sponsor, it will take place Friday through Sunday, Aug. 19 to 21, at Petersen Park, McHenry. “We’ve got something for everyone this year,” said Don Tonyan, co-chairman of the event along with fellow Rotarian Denis Buch. “It’s a mix of high-energy favorites from past years along with some bands that are allnew to our fest.” Kicking things off at 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 19, as they have for each Blues, Brews & BBQ since 2012, will be the always smileriling members of the John Todd Band. Jimmy Nick – who not only made the International Blues Challenge semi-finals in 2013 and 2016, but also is an Illinois Blues Challenge champion – takes the stage at 8 p.m. Friday. On Saturday, Aug. 20, the music starts at 4 p.m. with Sharon Lewis & Texas Fire. Lewis has performed across Europe and is a regularly featured headliner on the Chicago blues scene. After her band plays, Led Zeppelin tribute band Kashmir takes the stage at 6:30 p.m. Hot Rocks follows at 9 p.m. And, as Hot Rocks pays tribute to the Stones, the audience will be reminded of how Blues pioneers such as Muddy Waters, Chuck Berry and John Lee Hooker

Have you been to the Volo Museum lately? If not, this is the year to visit as new displays are being opened this summer that will be enjoyed by the entire family. No longer just an auto museum, but also a variety of other displays including the addition of the dinosaur exhibit at Jurassic Park, which made its appearance last year. Add the new trains from movies, an experience known as the Titanic Exhibit, the Duesenberg Room, a new ice cream parlor with locally sourced ice cream and other new exhibits all scheduled to be open by this summer, and there is enough to enjoy for several visits. Jurassic Park brought a new and very popular exhibit to the Volo Museum. Dinosaurs of every kind and size are displayed here. While there is a small, outdoor-themed playground built for children younger than 12 and a few large dinosaurs to be enjoyed outdoors, the majority of the museum is indoors, a perfect place to take the kids on a rainy day. “Indoors there are over 40

VOLO MUSEUM • CONTINUED FROM PAGE 9 animatronic dinosaurs, set in realistic settings as one winds their way through the park” said Jim Wojdyla, marketing manager for Volo Museum. The dinosaurs can be seen swishing their tails and growling loudly throughout the exhibit, sounds that will thrill (or frighten) visitors. Each display has a placard telling the history and facts about the specific dinosaur on display. Hopefully your children will give you time to read them, and they too will enjoy learning more about each special dinosaur as they move into each new exhibit. There amid live plants, to look like the home of the dinosaur, visitors take a walk through life as it was millions of years ago when these dinosaurs roamed the earth. Many of the exhibits, including this one, are interactive. Children will enjoy panning for fossils and learn more about the skeletons of the many dinosaurs. They can also dig in sand to find their fossil as they experience being an archeologist for the day. Volo suggests bringing ear protection for people who are sound sensitive, especially for young children. Earplugs are also available for sale in the gift shop if you forget to bring your own. There is a separate admission charge for the Volo Museum and for Jurassic Park. A combined ticket for both can be purchased

that is less expensive than separate tickets. Tickets can be purchased online or at the entrance to the park. A BIT OF HISTORY In 1960 when the Grams family purchased the 35-acre, 110-year-old property that had previously been a dairy farm, it was not imagined that the property would be turned into the museum that it is today. The land is located in the little village of Volo, but back then it was not an incorporated village. When incorporated in 1993, the number of residents was less than 3000, and it has not grown a significant amount since then. While the family planned to live in the farmhouse and open a resale shop in the barn, which they did, it was the Grams teenage sons, Greg and Bill, who changed the focus of the property as they began to follow their passion of collecting old cars and repairing them. As their collection grew, friends and neighbors would stop by to view their collection. Eventually, they began to sell some of the autos they restored and realized there was an interest in old automobiles, and possibly some money to be earned when restoring some of the old models. The business grew from there as the family worked together to create the unique collection of automobiles including a

variety of autos from movies and television shows that attracts visitors from around the world. The project has grown to encompass the majority of the 35 acres of the Grams farm as more buildings were built to house the many classic automobiles. A walk-through the automobiles on display can take several hours if one spends the time to enjoy the various automobile displays. Perhaps you will find an auto that is remembered from your past. From a single pole barn with a gravel floor, no heat, or plumbing to today’s multibuilding museum, the Grams boys built a major destination for over one half million visitors from around the world each year. The family still owns the business and now the third generation of Grams are actively working on site. “Many of our visitors are senior citizens, who are enjoying this trip into their youth as they may recognize autos from their past,” Wojdyla said. “But we are also a family-focused museum and welcome families of all ages. There is much to please anyone whatever their age or interest.” OTHER ATTRACTIONS It is not difficult to spend a whole day meandering through the many buildings of the auto museum alone. from your childhood or those special automobiles that seemed to do unbelievable stunts in movies or on television, you are sure to find the special ones you remember. The museum also has a variety of other interesting items to enjoy, including early motorcycles and bicycles, along with the old time animatron musical productions such as the one from Chuck E Cheese in the 1970s and 1980s. Today it can be enjoyed in the pizzeria, when one stops for lunch or a snack. Another favorite place to enjoy is the area known as the Coney Island exhibit. This area houses the popular 1927 carousel with wood-carved horses. Who doesn’t enjoy a ride on the carousel from the youngest child to adults who reminisce about their youthful days? The Coney Island exhibit area houses one of this year’s new exhibits – the Ice Cream Parlor. “The ice cream is purchased from a local manufacturer to assure great quality,” Wojdyla said. “Being in this area is a step back to days of being on the Coney Island pier when music, and ice cream were enjoyed by all visitors.” “There are plans to add a beer garden to the property,” Wojdyla said. “We are still working with the village on obtaining the liquor license, then we will proceed to build the beer garden.”

Recently the train used in the movie, Inception, which starred Leonardo Di Caprio, Tom Hardy, and Joseph GordonLevitt was delivered to the Volo Museum. The train arrived on an extended semi-truck chassis and was driven onto the grounds. According to the video on the Volo Museum website it was not easy to drive because of the limited vision and the extreme length of the car. The driver was guided by directors on either side of the train. The inside of the train car suffered some damage during the transport and will have to be rebuilt. “When all the train cars arrive and the ground has been

There will be seven movie trains in all,” Wojdyla said. “Hopefully by June, they will all be accounted for and at home here in Volo.” The Titanic exhibit is another of the special exhibits currently being worked on that they hope will be completed this summer. The exhibit will be the home of a replica of the 1912 Renault that was used in the movie. It was the car where Rose and Jack, principal characters in the movie Titanic got to know each other as they sat in the car to enjoy some private time. The original Renault went down with the ship. There will also be a display of fashions of the time and an interactive picture display. The Duesenberg Room will be the place where the most expensive car will be on display. That is the Duesenberg. The original Duesenberg was created in the 1920s prior to the Depression. Because of its extreme cost, it was discontinued during this trying time. In the 1970s the Duesenberg 2 was created which sold for $500,000. It was a huge machine and not meant for general public use due to size and cost. Two other displays will be completed this summer honoring two popular movies that used special cars, which the museum has obtained. “Fast and Furious” and “Ford vs. Ferrari” will each have a display completed this summer. Spending a day at the museum is an all-

day event if you want to see a wide variety of the displays. Whether you are there to enjoy the variety of classic automobiles on display or to enjoy Jurassic Park, the train rides and other new displays, there is plenty to enjoy. Newest sheriff’s canines named by Lake County students

Sheriff John D. Idelburg and the Lake County Sheriff’s Canine Unit are excited to announce the names of the two newest sheriff’s canines. From March 4 to 25 Lake County youth submitted their suggested names for the new canines. Nearly 400 kids submitted their preferred name for the canines. The names selected for our two newest canines are Canine Axel and Canine Echo. Deerfield High School Sophomore Ethan Jacobs as well as Vernon Hills Hawthorn Middle School 6thGraders Matthew Prigorenko and Carson Alper selected the name Axel. Millburn Elementary School Kindergartener Charlotte Regner selected the name Echo. All four students will be invited to participate in K9 Echo & Axel’s swearingin ceremony in late-June, following the completion of the initial training. Deputy Tyler Girmscheid was partnered with Canine

Echo and Deputy Kevin Gauer was partnered with Canine Axel. The two deputies and their new canine partners are completing an intense eightweek initial training program at Tops K9 in Grayslake. The training consists of canine psychology, obedience, agility, tracking, scent detection, and more. Sheriff Idleburg said, “We always enjoy getting the youth involved in various aspects of our office and I have to say, the names they submitted were terrific! Some of the submissions had inspiring meaning behind the names and some of the submissions had us chuckling. We are looking forward to having Ethan, Matthew, Carson, and Charlotte join us at their swearing-in ceremony.” Canines Axel and Echo join their other sheriff’s canine partners Dax, Duke, Danno, Ryker, and Boomer to bring the total number of Lake County Sheriff’s Canines to seven.

Dunn Museum hosts work of comic book artist

is best known for revolutionizing the style of comic and graphic novel illustration over the past four decades. The Eisner-winning and Emmy-nominated artist grew up in a New Jersey farming community where there was not a lot of exposure to artists and their work, at least none that were creating comic books. He later attended the Newark School of Fine and Industrial Arts. It was in art school that he was introduced to the wider world of art, falling in love with abstract expressionism. His landmark works, including Marvel Comics’ “Elektra: Assassin” and his acclaimed graphic novel “Stray Toasters,” have earned him an international reputation and cult-like following across media industries. “The Dunn Museum is honored to work with Bill Sienkiewicz on this amazing museum exhibition,” said Angelo Kyle, president of the Lake County Forest Preserves. “The artist brings an unprecedented balance of realistic rendering and expressive enthusiasm to comics.” The Dunn Museum is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums, a distinction held by only 3% of American museums. This exhibition showcases sketches and original paintings spanning the artist’s career from the 1980s to present day. Visitors can view more than 60 works of art and video interviews to discover how Sienkiewicz’s renderings incorporate abstract and expressionist influences. Many art experts attempt to differentiate between “fine art” and “illustration.” In Sienkiewicz’s mind you can do both. “Being an illustrator means being adept and committed to making a thing or a concept look like what it’s supposed to look like. My aim was to be able to execute what the client wanted, but through fine art techniques,” he said in a published report. Sienkiewicz brought influences from outside the art world to his work, such as
