Do you have a boat you’re thinking of selling? Maybe you want to upgrade or are taking a year off. No matter your reason for selling a boat, now is the ideal time to list it, sell it quickly and make top dollar for it. The global market analysis report from Boat Trader found the surge in consumer demand for boats that began at the start of the pandemic continued to surge through 2021. The wave continues into 2022 as more people look to get out and enjoy time on the water with friends and family. Although there are plenty of interested buyers, boat inventory remains low, which means boats are selling much faster and for higher prices. In 2021 compared to 2020, days on the market were down globally by 100 days and by 50 days in the U.S. What’s more, the overall value of sold boats skyrocketed across the globe, surpassing 2020 values by 34%. Demand and boat values are expected to increase throughout 2022, particularly for preowned boats. Inventory constraints continue, creating a limited supply of new boats, so as more people want to get on the water, they are looking to pre-owned options to fill their water lust. Many boat manufacturers have reported they are sold out of inventory for at least the upcoming season. In future years, they are hopeful supply chain issues will resolve and more inventory will be available. Additionally, some market experts expect interest rates to increase in the future, which will likely drive down the value of boats. What does this mean if you’re a boat owner thinking of selling or upgrading? Local farmers markets are more than just places to purchase the fresh locally grown produce. They are also a place

As we move into the hot days of mid-summer, there may be a need to replace some of the plants in your yard or maybe just purchase some fresh cut flowers for inside your home. Most markets invite a variety of vendors to share their special handmade

items such as soaps, candles, local honey, or cheeses. Herbs and flowers are a bright and cheery addition to many markets. At some markets vendors may include jewelry makers, paintings, and other craft items. Farmers markets are always a treasure chest There are many community markets and farmstands in the Chain O’ Lake’s area and each has its own special vibe. farm market now stands. Stade enjoyed growing crops and by 1989 had added a full complement of grains and vegetables to his fields. These included corn, soybeans and alfalfa, tomatoes, peppers, squash, onions, potatoes, strawberries, apples and a variety of other fresh fruits and vegetables. He sold the produce at roadside stands in Johnsburg and McHenry until he discontinued the dairy business and built the gigantic farm market on the site of the dairy farm. A visit to Stade’s can become an all day excursion for the whole family. A favorite activity that they offer and is enjoyed by the kids is the pick-your-own 7

produce where visitors go into the fields and fill their baskets with strawberries, beans, or whatever is ripe for picking at the time. A variety of vegetables and fruits are included in this program although the actual ones available depend on the season and the weather. A trip into the big red Stade’s Market will keep one busy picking out fresh fruits and vegetables on display. Fresh pies both baked ready to eat or ready to take home and bake before eating. Anyone who has ever been to Stade’s looks forward to purchasing and eating their apple cider donuts made on site. After shopping stop for some ice cream at the creamery.

Townsend Cattle and Meats Stade Farm and Market

Townsend Cattle and Meats are raised on the Stade Farm by Sean and Stephanie Townsend and sold in the Market there. The Townsend beef is grass fed until the last few months when grain is added. They are kept in open pastures all summer so that they get exercise.

Property upgrades, new offerings add to appeal of movie nights this season

New concession items have been added as well, including chicken sandwiches and soft serve ice cream, along with cappuccino and hot chocolate for those brisk summer nights. Children and adults will appreciate new movie-themed artwork destined for the area under the screen as well as around the projector and concession buildings. Indeed, special surprises are in store all summer long. “Any time we’re showing an animated or family-friendly movie, we’ll have a bounce house on the grounds as well as face painting,” Dehn said. “We’re also scheduling some bands to come out and play in the evenings before the movies start, and looking into doing more virtual concerts like we did with Bon Jovi last summer.” “It’s going to be a great season,” he

continued. “The atmosphere here is kind of like a big block party where there also happen to be movies playing. Plus, it’s generational. You have grandpa and grandma with the grandkids — and they’ve all grown up here. There’s not many places where you can say that anymore.” The McHenry Outdoor opened as the Sky-line Drive-In in July 1951. The property, including an additional nine acres Dehn purchased to the east of the parking area, was annexed to Lakemoor in 2020. Admission this season is $12 per adult, $6 for military and seniors as well as children ages 3 to 11, and free for those younger than 3. Nothing screams summer like taking in a movie on a giant screen under the stars. And at the McHenry Outdoor Theater, which launched its open-seven-days-a-week season with “Top Gun: Maverick” over Memorial Day weekend, the experience just keeps getting better. Along with making numerous improvements to the grounds and concession area, theater owner Scott Dehn invested about $40,000 this spring on refurbishing the six-story-high, 100-footwide screen at the southeast corner of Chapel Hill and Lincoln roads. Another $10,000 went into new lighting and lenses for the digital projector. And the result? It’s a movie-lover’s dream. “It’s gorgeous,” Dehn said. “I never thought we would have a clearer, brighter picture. But we do. It’s beautiful.” And it’s just in time for the return of a stellar crop of first-run features after a pandemic-prompted dearth of new films over the last couple of years. First-run blockbusters scheduled for the Outdoor this summer include “Jurassic World Dominion,” “Minions: The Rise of Gru” and “DC League of Super-Pets,” to name a few. Adding to the experience for adults will be the addition of the Skyline Tap and Gaming area in the concession building’s north side. Beer and wine will be available for purchase until intermission. Those at the wheel on entering the grounds will receive a hand stamp indicating they are the designated driver for the night, and will not be served, Dehn said. “We had many meetings with the Lakemoor village administrator to build in safety standards before obtaining the liquor license,” Dehn said. “All servers will be Basset-trained and certified.” Another change for visitors to enjoy is the addition of a small merchandise shop featuring T-shirts, sweatshirts, blankets, Frisbees, hats and can koozies, with prices ranging from $6 for a koozie to $45 for a sweatshirt. Those looking to view the film from the lap of luxury can rent an inflatable lounger for $7, with a $10 deposit.

Music lovers, dance lovers and outdoor lovers, get ready for award-winning performers playing under the stars at the annual Concerts in the Plaza music series. The Independence Grove Forest Preserve in Libertyville will host nine concerts at 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Aug. 16. The concerts take place at the preserve’s outdoor Millennia Plaza overlooking a 115acre lake. A bonus concert in neighboring North Chicago is scheduled at the outdoor amphitheater at Greenbelt Cultural Center on June 23. From Beatles tributes to the blues, from rock and bluegrass to swing and jazz, there’s something for just about any music taste in this season’s entertainment schedule. Concert at Greenbelt For the second year, a concert is scheduled for a venue in North Chicago. John Primer blues band will perform at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, June 23, in the outdoor amphitheater at the Greenbelt Cultural Center in North Chicago. The musician brings his signature electric slide guitar, soulful R&B vocals, and the influence of blues legends he has played with, including Muddy Waters, Junior Wells, Willie Dixon and Magic Slim. Bring chairs and blankets. Arrive at Greenbelt early as parking is limited. Cars are turned away when the parking lot is full. To help offset our cost to host this concert, there is a vehicle entrance fee of $10. There is no rain date. “The concerts have always been a popular attraction during the summer. We are thrilled to again provide the musical performance at Greenbelt this season,” said Angelo Kyle, president of the Lake County Forest Preserves.

There are several ways to camp. The traditional rustic way, or a more elegant way known as glamping, where campers think outside of the tent and expect higher end accommodations while still having a beautiful outdoor view of nature. Begin your list of necessities ahead of time so that you can add on as you think of items the family will need before you discover that you need an item when out camping. Start with clothing and be sure to add a waterproof jacket in case of rain. A warm sweater even though it is summer as it does get cool at night in the country. Mosquito spray, sunscreen, and flashlights with lots of extra batteries. And

Camping. It sounds so exciting. Sleeping out of doors under the stars, enjoying the warm summer weather. Cooking over an open fire or on a grill. Not a care or a worry in the world with a place to relax and enjoy the great outdoors. Perhaps this is the year to spend the family’s summer vacation camping and avoid long automobile trips with the everincreasing cost of fuel. While camping is an exciting way to spend a vacation, a camping trip is not as simple to arrange as it first seems to be. So where does one begin to organize a weekend or week campout? If you have never camped and plan to camp in a tent, you first must arrange for a tent. Purchasing a tent for that first campout is not a good idea. Renting one makes more sense as you will see whether your family enjoys camping. Rent the tent and practice putting it up and taking it down before you actually go to the campground. A practice run in the backyard with the family spending the night sleeping out is a good way to start. When renting a tent be sure to choose a size adequate for the family. For most

of us we are not used to the whole family sleeping in such close quarters so you may want to rent a tent that accommodates one or two persons more than you have, such as if you are a family of four that you rent a tent that will hold six persons. Unless you really want a weekend of togetherness, then go ahead and get that tent for four. Make sure that your sleeping bags are good quality. Remember you will be on the ground and small bumps in the dirt or small pebbles under your sleeping bag are very uncomfortable. One way to avoid the tent is to use a campground that has small cabins or campers to rent.

For those who are novice campers, they recommend that you consider renting one of the two Rent-A-Camp units. Each of these campsites comes with either a tent or a cabin, and includes cots, a fire extinguisher, a light, a broom, dustpan, charcoal grill, fire ring and picnic table. This will save you a lot of time and will make your entry into the camping world much easier. There are also a few accessible camping spots available. Showers and toilets are accessible near these sites. Contact the park for more information. “Campers are eligible to stay at a campsite up to 14 days in a 30 day period,” said Jenske. different camping experiences. Chain O’Lakes State Park offers a quiet campsite in the woods with basic back to nature activities. Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort is more of a social campground as many of their customers spend the entire summer there. Campers get to know each other well and enjoy social activities together. Chain O’ Lakes State Park is at 8916 Wilmot Road, Spring Grove, and has campsites to meet most needs. “We have six different camping loops that offer a variety of camping experiences,” said Brian Jeske, Site superintendent of Chain O Lakes State Park. “Two of the loops are sites that have electricity and have a total of 149 camp sites. Three of the loops do not have electricity and consist of a total of 90 campsites. The sixth loop is reserved for youth groups, such as scouts and can provide space for 150 campers.” Each of the campsites has

quickly become friends and enjoy participating in activities together. Laundry facilities are on site. “The lake is the big draw. It is a pristine, calm lake with a sandy beach,” Tiesi said. “On hot summer days everyone heads for the beach.” While many head there to swim, others enjoy boating on non-motorized watercraft. The park offers a variety of watercraft to enjoy on the lake. Paddleboats, canoes, rowboats, paddleboards and kayaks are for rent to campers and weekday beach goers. Prefer a pool to the beach? Then the large, heated pool is the place for you to enjoy the water. A kiddie pool is also available for the younger members of the family. Or you may wish to spend time in the hot tub. On Friday and Saturday nights, movies are shown at the pool. With the name Fish Lake, it is not surprising that fishing is a favorite activity at the campgrounds. According to Boating Lake County, Fish Lake contains a variety of species including Northern Pike, large mouth bass, blue gills, crappies, and catfish,

waiting to be caught. Bring your fishing rod and don’t forget to purchase a fishing license. Fishing is catch and release only. There are always activities to enjoy no matter what your age. Some are focused on children, others on teens and even activities for adults and seniors. Enjoy a round of mini golf, or join in family activities such as crafts, ceramics, and pool games. Have you always wanted to tie dye a T-shirt? Here is your chance. Teenagers especially enjoy outdoor physical activity so there are two basketball courts, and a baseball field. On rainy days, most of the teenagers will be found at the teen recreational center, which has video games. Bags tournaments attract all ages. Come together at the family dances complete with a D.J. and dance the night away. Spending time at Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort will be a treat for the whole family. Remember to bring your own firewood as collecting wood in the park is not allowed.” According to Jenske, Chain O’Lakes State Park has more than 6,500 acres of land and 488 miles of shoreline on the Chain, leaving much to do while in the park. It borders three of the lakes of the Chain – Grass, Marie and Nippersink. With so many activities available in the park, the day will pass by quickly. There are more than 6 miles of biking/hiking trails, so why not start the day with a hike through the beautiful woods or for bike riders, enjoy a bike ride? Turner Lake can be found within the camping community and is a great peaceful place to enjoy fishing off the pier. The area is also the perfect place to observe birds and waterfowl. Enjoy taking out a canoe, kayak, or inflatable boat on Turner Lake. No motorized boats allowed. “We have some Sandhill Cranes that remain in the area. In the spring the Pelicans make their way through heading on their way north,” Jenske said. Gils on the Chain, near the public boat launch, is a concession stand that offers many services including fishing licenses and waterway stickers for boats. They rent kayaks and other non-motorized boats, such as pedal boats, for family fun. Call 847587-7165 to reserve a watercraft. Swimming is not allowed in the park’s waterways. Located near the main entrance the Chain O’Lakes Stables operates pony rides for the younger children in the family. Or they rent horses for up to 2 hour trail rides. Although located on busy Highway 12, when you turn in to the property at the entrance, you will be surprised as you travel the tree-lined road through the property that covers more than 100 acres. Inside the park, away from the bustle of the highway, there is a very different vibe. “While we serve overnight campers for stays from two days to two weeks, we also have many seasonal campers,” said Susan Tiesi, manager of Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort. “Many of our seasonal campers rent a site for the season and make this their summer home. They may have an RV of their own or rent one of the park models to create their home for the summer.” The campsites all have water, electricity and fire rings.
