The Tempel Farm, CORRESPONDENT home of the worldfamous Lipizzan horses, is a beautiful country setting with rolling hills and clean white fences along the Illinois/Wisconsin border near Wadsworth, Illinois. The stately and majestic horses, with a long history of being the mounts of royalty, today are best known for their impressive ability to perform difficult challenges. The horses are considered to be one of the oldest breeds in Europe dating back to 1580 when Archduke Charles of the Austro Hungarian Empire started a stud farm at Lipizza near the Adriatic Sea in the area that is now known as Slovenia. The Renaissance, which occurred at that same time, encouraged the development of classical horsemanship. With the opening of the Spanish Riding School in 1572 the horse and rider acted together as one to perform high-end movements reminiscent of a ballerina to entertain royalty. With this classical horsemanship, it was not surprising that the Lipizzans were chosen to carry on the Spanish Riding tradition, utilizing techniques of dressage and performing difficult movements such as the pirouettes and the “airs above the ground” that involved the horse leaping into the air.

In 1958, the Smiths purchased 20 horses to begin their endeavor. “The horses were mostly mares who arrived with a colt and were again pregnant,” Buananno said. Even more surprising, the Smiths did not own a farm so they rented a farm in Spring Grove, Illinois, where they grew their herd over the next 10 years.
Growing the herd
With the help of breeders, veterinarians, and riders, the Smiths were able to grow the herd and still retain the high quality of the breed and the quality of the Spanish riding style known as dressage. As the horses and their riders became skilled in this method of riding, they began to perform at private events and special occasions. The Smith family remained on the farm in Spring Grove until 1969 when the East Good Luck Stables near Wadsworth, Illinois, was purchased and became the home of the Lipizzans, a place that continues to be their home. By 1982 Tempel Farms was known for having the largest herd, about 400, of privately owned Lipizzans. They were also noted to be the only private facility that bred the horses. Today there are about 80 horses in the herd.

At this time, the first public appearance of the Lipizzans was held at the East Good Luck Facility and continues to be held there throughout the summer. Visitors to the show are often as impressed with the beauty and skill of the horse and rider, just as Tempel and Esther Smith were so many years ago. As the Lipizzans’ performances grew and became better known, they received requests to perform all over the country. This included requests from the White House where they appeared in several inaugural ceremonies. The farm eventually passed over to the Smith daughters, Linda Smith Buonanno and Martha Smith Simpson. They were extremely proud to receive in 1993 the Officer’s Cross, Grand Decoration of Honor for Service to the Republic of Austria for their “careful management of a cultural institution with such close ties to Austria.” “It is the third generation that is currently running the farm,” Esther Buonanno said. “All of the performers are the stallions (males). The mares (females) have a different job. They are bred regularly and spend their time raising their foals.”
Training to perform
While the training of the stallions begins between 3-1/2 and 4 years, their first introduction to performing often occurs as early as seven days old when they are brought into a performance to acclimate them to the venue and the sounds of the audience. “We spend a lot of time socializing them from an early age so that they are comfortable with people,” Buonanno said. The huge animals weigh between 800 to 1,200 pounds and are tall and muscled but also friendly and allow strangers to approach them and pet them. They don’t actually begin to ride the horses until they are about 4 years old. While the Lipizzans are noted for their steel white color, they are not born that way. The foals are brown or black when born and gradually lighten up to the white that is associated with the Lipizzans. “Occasionally a horse has a recessive gene and he will remain a dark color,” Buonanno said. “We have a brown Lipizzan who we consider to be our good luck charm. Approximately one in 100 babies remain the dark color of their birth.” It takes 8 to 10 years to train the Lipizzans because they have to develop the strong musculature that is needed to perform. They are taught to stand on their hind legs and to leap off the ground with all four legs, known as the “airs above the ground.” Additionally, there are a series of highlevel classical dressage movements where the horse leaves the ground for a period of time or balances on two legs. These are the difficult, ballet-like movements that take the horse years to master.

Tempel Farm continues to use all the training methods of the Spanish Riding School and often their trainers come from the school. “This year we have officially formed a relationship with the Spanish Riding School. While we have worked together over the years, it is good to make our relationship official,” Buonanno said. As stated on their website, “The purpose of the Tempel Lipizzans is today as it has been from the beginning: to promote classical dressage and the Lipizzan breed in the United States through a careful breeding and training program. Public exhibitions and tours serve to educate and entertain on the history of this classical art.” They are also involved in a variety of charitable events that use horses to help those with a disability. One such organization that has received one of their horses is Brave Hearts in Harvard, Illinois. This organization works with veterans to help them through a relationship with a horse and therapeutic riding, heal the injuries they may have sustained while in the service of our country. The performances are held as scheduled rain or shine. When the weather is inclement, they move from the outdoor performance arena to the indoor arena. Performances at Tempel Farms begin in

Walworth County Fair celebrates

The 170th Annual Walworth County Fair returns to the fairgrounds in Elkhorn on Aug. 28 and runs through Labor Day, Sept. 2. The annual festival puts the spotlight on agriculture in the area and gives the county’s youth a chance to shine. Often local 4-H members, the youth raise and show animals along with competing in multiple other contests to highlight farming and home-crafted goods and food. The festival is the largest county fair in the state and is a “dry” festival, with no alcohol served on the fairgrounds. Along with the agriculture judging, the fair features a large carnival, Kiddieland, Log Cabin demonstrations, Barnyard Adventure, live music, food vendors and more. The fair also hosts the largest demo derby in the state. Opening ceremonies for the fair will be at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 28, on the Park Stage. The annual Fairest of the Fair competition finals are set for Sunday, Sept. 1, on the Park Stage.
For the kids
The family friendly festival offers boatloads of fun for free on the fairgrounds. Kids of all ages can enjoy touring the barns and buildings, live entertainment, harness racing, horse pulls, racing pigs and more. The Barnyard Adventure gives kids a chance to explore the workings of the farm. Children can pick apples, gather eggs, milk Helene the Holstein, drive a tractor, and harvest vegetables in the garden.

The fair’s Barnyard Adventure has won numerous awards from the International Association of Fairs and Expos, the umbrella fair organization of all fairs across the country. The Barnyard Adventure Stage is in Kiddieland next to the Barnyard Adventure Tent and the pony rides and hosts multiple family friendly acts all day long at the fair. The Barnyard Adventure Tent has handson activities for the kids, including a corn and soybean bin, honeybee display, canning demonstration, classes on hydroponics and cloning, and other educational activities. Barnyard Adventure requires the help of about 25 to 30 volunteers to guide the children and their families through the various stations of “From Seed to Supper.” The job of the volunteer is to help the little farmers maximize their experience by making sure that each simple step is completed.
Butterfly Barn
Kids at the fair love the Butterfly Barn as they try to catch one of the winged creatures and learn about their habitat and lifecycle. The barn is filled with all the foods butterflies love, including amaranth, butterfly bush and goldenrod. The butterfly barn was built for indoor plants and about 250 butterflies. Around May, the Walworth County Fair will receive a shipment of caterpillars and nourish them into butterflies for the fair. Dozens of adult butterflies also are ordered; so there are plenty in the barn during fair week.
Special attractions
Headlining at the fair this year are country band Home Free on Saturday night and Christian rock band Newsboys United Sunday night. The Newsboys were scheduled for the fair in 2018, but severe
weather cancelled the concert. Tickets for both concerts are on sale at walworthcountyfair.com. The Grandstand is also where you’ll find the Flat Track Motorcycle Races, truck and tractor pulls, monster trucks, horse events and the demo derby.

While the residents of Bristol are dressed in the styles of the time, many visitors also come wearing the period clothing, ready to truly embrace the 16th century. It is sometimes difficult to distinguish the cast of Bristol from the visitors who wander the fairgrounds. For those who might not have appropriate wear in their closet, Renaissance gowns and attire are available for sale at the many dress shops.
Eat, drink and be merry
The aroma of the many food stands cannot be ignored, and festivalgoers often find themselves trying to choose from the cuisine of old-time Bristol – a difficult choice when faced with so many traditional dishes. Fish and chips, Cornish pasties (meat filled pies), mushroom burgers or anything mushroom and the ever-popular turkey drumsticks are among the favorites offered. The fair also features a favorite nonalcoholic drink of the 16th century, sarsaparilla, a root beer type drink spiced with a trace of licorice. A food stand that always seems to have the longest lines is the one that specializes in cheese fritters. The crispy bites filled with melted cheese are a favorite of many. Just as in the days of old, loud and lusty pub crawls are another activity to enjoy. The crawls are led by a serving wench, who takes groups on a tour of the fair’s best watering

Tickets for the pub tour may be purchased online for $45 or at the city gates. Tours are scheduled at 11 a.m., noon, 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. on Saturdays and noon, 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. on Sundays. Knight fall A true highlight of the day is to cheer the knights as they display their skills. Each knight is dressed in his armor decorated with his colors. The plumes are attached to his helmet and again found adorning his horse. Seated atop his well-groomed steed, the

knight will perform a variety of skills as the queen watches. With spectators cheering loudly, the event will end with the knights competing, as they attempt to topple each other from their mounts. The last one still seated on his horse becomes the top knight of the Queen’s Brigade and is honored by the queen. Meandering throughout the city, a variety of activities are available. Various musical groups parade through the grounds and the stages offer a multitude of shows. Watch the acrobats, enjoy the music and participate in the interactive living history. Visitors also enjoy wandering through the many exhibitors displaying their arts and crafts. The family-friendly festival features the Kids Kingdom, where children can participate in a variety of rides and games to show off their skills. RenQuest is an interactive theatrical gaming experience that is a favorite of visitors to the Renaissance Faire. It offers players a chance to experience the living world of the Bristol Renaissance Faire through completing quests, honing skills and defeating evil villains. Those looking for a unique venue for a wedding or special occasion might want to consider Cotswold Commons for its lush gardens and grounds. Book early because the fair is only open for nine weekends in the summer. The Bristol Renaissance Faire is open weekends from July 6 to Labor Day, Sept. 2. Each weekend has a special theme. Visit the faire from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., rain or shine. Tickets are $25.95 for adults, $24.95 for seniors and military and $11.50 for children age 5 to 11.
