As Americans have increasingly realized they need competent, professional advice about how to manage their money, financial planning has grown significantly as a profession over the past several decades. Yet, only 23 percent of the more than 83,000 Certified Financial Planner (CFP) professionals today are female, even as women control more than one-third of the wealth in the U.S. This means there’s both a tremendous opportunity, as well as need, for more female financial planners. Here are five benefits of financial planning careers that make them a great fit for women, according to those in the industry: 1. Work-life balance: Financial planning careers offer the flexibility to balance professional demands with your personal life, whether you are making time for family or for other activities that are important to you. 2. Opportunity to make a difference: Financial planners are often key parts of their communities and enjoy the satisfaction of helping people in important, life-changing ways. By taking a holistic look at their clients’ finances, they help families build wealth, manage financial challenges and achieve their goals. “I think this is such a great field for women because we naturally want SUBMITTED PHOTO Women in Business to take care of people. Five reasons why financial planning is a great career for women careers. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the median pay for personal financial planners is $89,000. 4. Freedom to shape your own path: You may choose to work for a large firm, a small company, a bank or a broker dealer. Or, you may decide to start your own business. Roughly one in five personal financial planners are self-employed, according to the BLS. “The beautiful thing about being a CFP pro is that we’re still blazing trails. It’s still a very young profession, so you can make this career anything you want,” says Rianka Dorsainvil, a CFP professional in Washington, D.C. 5. Room for growth: The BLS projects that the financial advisory industry, including financial planning, will grow 15 percent between 2016 and 2026. That’s 4 percent higher growth than other occupations are projected to experience. This high demand for financial planning services, coupled with an aging current workforce, means there is long-term opportunity and room for growth within the profession. Financial planning is a satisfying career for many women already -- 72 percent of women who earned the CFP certification are very satisfied with their jobs, according to research from the CFP Board Center for Financial Planning. For more information on how to join the ranks, visit: cfp.net/ become-a-cfp-professional. Offering growth potential, work-life balance and the freedom to chart your own professional path, financial planning is a career that provides many tangible perks.

He will be a third generation owner/operator in the system!”

The Women’s Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC) applauds Walmart as first corporate leader to feature Women Owned logo products The Women’s Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC) is proud to celebrate Walmart as the first retailer to feature Women Owned Business (WOB) products, making them nationally available in-store, online and identified by a unique, universally recognized Women Owned logo. Developed by WBENC and WEConnect International with support by Walmart, the Women Owned logo signifies to shoppers that a product is made or supplied by a woman-owned business. “Walmart is bringing Women Owned business products to homes and stores across America – and giving consumers the chance to experience the quality, value and innovation that women’s businesses can deliver,” said Pamela Prince-Eason, President and CEO of WBENC, the nation’s leader in women’s business growth. “We applaud Walmart’s significant leadership role in supporting women-owned businesses by making Women Owned logo products more visible and readily available.” Walmart sells thousands of products from women-owned businesses both instore and online and this month will place six products on feature with the “Women Owned” logo in store, including Milo’s Tea®, Jelmar CLR Remover™, HMS Mfg. Co Hefty® Wastebaskets, Goldbug Inc. Carter’s Newborn Shoes, Ariela and Associates Smart & Sexy® Bra, and

Ziegenfelder’s Budget Saver Pops®. The products will be sold in all Walmart stores nationwide and will have a prominent presence on Walmart.com/WomenOwned, a new page that also launched to showcase products made by women-owned businesses. The online categories range from beauty and clothing, to electronics, health, and home improvement. “By buying products with the Women Owned label, consumers are choosing to enable Women Owned businesses to grow and the economy to thrive,” said Patricia Birmingham, VP Marketing at WBENC. Women’s businesses nationwide generate $1.4 trillion in revenue, employ nearly 7.9 million employees and have been a source of 274,000 jobs since the recession in 2007, according to the American Express OPEN State of Women Owned Businesses 2014. “Walmart is throwing open the doors of opportunity for our national and international community of Women’s Business Enterprises,” added Candace Waterman, Chief of Staff, Certification & Program Operations at WBENC. “WBEs can be inspired to take their product to the next level of exposure and volume.” Any product with the Women Owned logo is produced or supplied by a company that is owned and operated by a woman or

For years, many American businesses have provided wellness programs dedicated to encouraging employees to improve their physical health and fitness. But a new work culture is emerging, as employers recognize the need to focus on the overall well-being of their associates in order to keep them at a company. Recruitment is expensive, and an emphasis on retaining top talent through efforts to support their well-being can lead to a significant reduction in these costs. A recent Staying@Work survey revealed that within the next year, 64 percent of employers would adopt programs to address the overall wellness needs of employees in five areas: 1. Financial: Nearly 75 percent of people worry about their finances at least some of the time, reports the American Psychological Association. Concerns about house and car payments, child care and daily living expenses, and student loan debt can affect an employee’s work performance. The World Health Organization calculates that financial stress costs employers $300 billion each year in missed work and lost productivity. To address these concerns, nearly 84 percent of employers provide financial wellness programs, offering services like counseling to set up and maintain family budgets. However, only 4 percent of employers provide loan repayment assistance, such as the BenefitEd program, making this a benefit that would help many employers stand out from their competitors when vying for talented employees. With BenefitEd, employers can easily set up a monthly, quarterly or annual contribution,

or matching payments, toward employees’ student loans. Employers may provide BenefitEd for specific positions or to employees meeting certain criteria. Some employers are using BenefitEd’s platform to let their employees take advantage of match dollars that have traditionally only been used for retirement. 2. Social: One key way employers support employees’ social well-being is with policies that allow for greater flexibility and work-life balance. Employees who can telework or control their schedules to better juggle work and family responsibilities are more relaxed, productive and satisfied with their jobs. 3. Community: Seventy-nine percent of employees surveyed in a recent study preferred to work for an employer that cares about social and environmental issues, and encourages community involvement. 4. Career: Employees want to work for employers that appreciate them and provide learning opportunities. To meet this demand, many employers offer tuition assistance programs, repayment programs like BenefitEd, and lunch-and-learn options offering employees a chance to develop new skills and get training for jobs in other departments. 5. Physical: Nearly two-thirds of employers encourage their staff to develop healthy lifestyles. Popular programs include nutritious food and snack choices in cafeterias and workout areas to make it more convenient for employees to exercise. Why women with accounting experience make better leaders Those claiming to be experts on business leadership have written novel after novel on what it takes to be a successful leader. As Venkatesh Rao of Forbes asserts, most of this advice centers on leaders having great “people skills.” However, according to Rao, “if they only had people skills, they’ve generally been forgettable CEOs who at best kept the ship sailing on a straight course ... At worst, they’ve buried their head in the sand ... and let successors deal with the consequences of their not-leading.” While people skills are certainly crucial to leading a team and connecting with clients and investors, all businesses deal with money, which means that women with accounting experience have an advantage when compared to those without such skills. This gives women — who, according to Catalyst, make up a slight majority of the number of post graduates with accounting degrees — an opportunity to step into leadership roles. Financial leadership builds a successful business A recent article by Bplans listed the top reasons that small businesses fail. Among those reasons was poor financial management. “You must know, down to the last dime, where the money in your business is coming from and where it’s going in order for your business to succeed. ... Sometimes people start businesses with a dream of making money but don’t have the skill or interest to manage cash flow, taxes, expenses, and other financial issues.”

Although Bplans suggests using professional business accounting software to solve financial mismanagement issues, software isn’t necessarily required if the knowledge and skills are there. By bringing an extensive knowledge of finances to business leadership, accounting professionals can not only be aware of where money is coming from and where it is going, but they can also influence decisions that will elevate profits and cut losses.

financial skills in leadership roles “esoteric,” but he also says “that to break the game of house-trained CEOs ... and do greater things, CEOs have to understand finance and economics even better than Wall Street, and beat them at their own game in order to pursue opportunities that may have high immediate costs but are great in the long term.” Accounting experience allows women in leadership roles to invest in things that build the business for long-term gain.

Financial knowledge improves decision-making In Rao’s Forbes piece on how “Great CEOs Must be Either Technical or Financial,” he explains that those with more than people skills can be “more active-navigator CEOs.” Rather than turning to other professionals in a business, leaders with accounting knowledge can make more influential and expansive decisions related to the course of the business. An article from Nonprofit Finance Fund claimed that “Effective leaders know how to interpret and use their data to inform decisions.” Women with accounting knowledge understand the data given to them across a spectrum of reports. Such professionals can see the data not only as a measurement of the business’s current financial situation but also as a predictor of future success or failure. Knowledge of past and potential future trends can help female leaders steer the business in a progressive direction. Rao may claim that CEOs consider

Accounting knowledge gives women an edge According to the National Center for Education Statistics, women are earning more than half of all the college degrees in accounting, with 52.1 percent of accounting bachelor’s degrees, 52.7 percent of accounting master’s degrees, and 44.4 percent of doctorate degrees being earned by women. While the majority is slight, with a greater number of women earning

Pam Cunningham

accounting degrees than men, women have a greater chance of attaining leadership roles where accounting skills are given priority. Along with the other skills that American Express claims make women better bosses than men, such as being better communicators, having more patience and better business ethics, and more, accounting experience prepares women to succeed as leaders in business. There may not be a foolproof formula for what makes the best leader, but accounting knowledge gives women leadership skills that can reinforce the current success of a business and ensure that success carries on into the future. If you need a place to start working toward your future as a business leader, visit Maryville University’s online accounting program and learn more about pursuing an online master’s degree in accounting. Maryville’s graduate accounting program can help you adapt to a dynamic field and give you the tools to lead the field into the future.
