Balloons, bands, games, classic cars and more! The Monroe Balloon Rally is the longest running balloon event in Wisconsin. The event is held over Father’s Day Weekend at the Green County Fairgrounds in Monroe, Wis. and offers a potpourri of events and activities for the whole family. Fairgrounds Admission during the Balloon Rally is free! This includes access to blues bands tent and viewing of all balloonist activities. Fairgrounds parking is $3 and you can also often find free on-street parking surrounding and near the fairgrounds on a first-come-first-serve basis. Alp and Dell Cheese Store: A must visit in the Midwest Tony and Esther Zgraggen, owners of the Alp and Dell Cheese Store, immigrated in the 1980’s to the United States from Switzerland. At that time they had a Dairy farm and for 5 years took cheese to the farmers market in Madison. After being absent from the Dairy industry for several years, they found the way back to the “cheese” with the purchase of the Alp and Dell Cheese Store in April 2009. The Alp and Dell Cheese Store is located in Green County, the Heart of Wisconsin’s Dairy and Cheese Industry. Green County has about 400 Dairy farms producing 530 million pounds of milk
annually. In the remaining 13 Cheese factories in Green County, many master cheesemakers are busy turning this farm fresh product into Green County Gold. Brodhead to host Covered Bridge Days in August During the second weekend of August each year, Brodhead hosts a weekend brimming with exciting and interesting activities for everyone, with the theme of “Bridging yesterday with tomorrow.” Recently-added events include the Wildflower Festival, featuring plant tours and educational programs as well as a juried, high quality art festival in downtown Veterans Park; exploring the
historic Mill Race by pontoon boat at the new “Embrace the Race” event; and a regional garden tractor expo that brings hundreds of vintage and refurbished garden tractors to town. Among the many long-standing Covered Bridge Days activities are a kids’ fun run, garden displays, tractor show with a thresheree and tractor pull, horse show with pony rides, toy tractor
pull, flea market, vendors on the Square, Model A antique car display and classic car show, historical tours, a cemetery walk in Greenwood Cemetery, volleyball and softball tournaments, a street dance, an old fashioned church service, a parade, food stands and beer gardens. Visit Beloit is pleased to announce the creation of a new event—Beloit 608 Day. The day-long event is being organized and promoted by Visit Beloit, the Downtown Beloit Association, the Greater Beloit Economic Development Corporation, and the Greater Beloit Chamber of Commerce and will be held on June 8, 2019. The event aims to showcase the people, places, and things that make Beloit great with fun experiences, events, and deals throughout the city. Beloit 608 Day invites local businesses, agencies, non-profits, and private and public sectors to join in the celebration by offering 608-themed specials, discounts, and events across the city and surrounding communities. It’s a play on our area code and is being designed as an annual event. Participants are encouraged to offer specials or events that have a 608 twist. There is no charge to participate. There are more than 20 business participating thus far with deals and activities including cocktails, saltwater taffy, breakfast sandwiches, store discounts, raffles, demonstrations, samples, and more! “This event is about celebrating and enjoying our community, as well as inviting our neighbors to participate in the fun,” said Stacey Bodnar, director of marketing and public relations for Visit Beloit. “It’s a great opportunity to visit businesses and parts of town you may haven’t been to lately and enjoy all that this great city has to offer.” All the deals and participants can be viewed on the Beloit 608 Day page on the Visit Beloit Website. Anyone can submit a deal or event up through June 7. In addition, there is a Facebook event on Visit Beloit’s Facebook page with details. 608 Celebrations are also taking place in Madison and Janesville, Wis.

The Brodhead Historical Society’s Depot Museum is another great site for visitors hoping to get a glimpse into Brodhead’s past. Artifacts, photographs, and documents from Brodhead’s past fill the museum. Some of the recent displays added include vintage cheese making equipment from the Brodhead area and Green County Cheese factories, musical instruments, broom-making equipment, and displays from early Brodhead businesses. The museum is open from May through September on Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Admission is free.

Monroe, known as the “Gateway to Cheese Country” and the “Cheese Capital of the U.S.A.,” is a small historic community in south central Wisconsin rich in heritage, tradition, technology, and the hard work of dairying and cheesemaking. Envision the manual labor from its humble beginnings in a single farmstead factory in the mid 1850’s, to the first Wisconsin limburger cheese factory in 1868, and to a time in the 1900’s when more than 300 factories dotted the countryside. At the National Historic Cheesemaking Center and Museum, the past comes alive with tours led by knowledgeable veteran cheesemakers and docents. Then, enter ….”an era that was, that will never be again” as you step inside the Imobersteg Cheese Factory, restored and located on our campus, where each year on the second Saturday of June a 90 pound wheel of Swiss cheese is made right before your eyes, as it was done over 100 years ago. Our docents provide area information for Monroe, New Glarus and the entire “Little Richland Valley,” for lodging, restaurants, cheese retail stores, attractions and all that Monroe and Green County has to offer.

Decatur Dairy: Making award-winning cheeses since 1941 Cheese Factory closed and most of the milk was sent to Decatur Swiss Cheese factory. Wilbur Klemm, formerly of the Jordan Prairie factory and John Frehner joined Decatur Swiss as Cheesemakers. In 1973, Roy Stettler and son, Mike, were hired as the new Cheesemakers. In 1982, Steve Stettler was hired as Cheesemaker and Co-op manager for Decatur Swiss. Decatur Dairy, Inc. was created by Steve and Glennette Stettler to manufacture and sell cheese for the Co-op.

In 2000, 7,200 square feet were added to the factory creating an additional make room, a new packaging room and cooler Larger silos were added for additional milk storage and automated vats were installed in 2005 to further advance the make procedure in the factory. There are currently 70+ Co-op members, ranging throughout Green, Rock, and Lafayette Counties. Steve Stettler is a Wisconsin Master Cheesemaker who has developed several new cheeses for
the Co-op including a European style Havarti, a Swiss-lace cheese called Stettler Swiss and a Colby-Swiss marbled cheese. Decatur Swiss also produces Muenster, Brick, Farmers Cheese, Colby Longhorn, Butterkase and Queso Blanco. Decatur has won U.S. and World Cheese Contest awards, and several Wisconsin State Fair Awards. In 2007 they swept the U.S. Contest and the Green County Fair taking 1st, 2nd and 3rd in Havarti at both contests.

In 1941, 20 members of the Coldren Cheese Company, owned by the late C.J. Coldren, held a meeting to discuss the possibility of building a new cheese factory. The current factory was too small to accommodate their needs, so they purchased 3/4 of an acre of land on Oct. 15, 1941 from the late Frank Culles for the new factory site. The new factory was completed in 1942 and they created a new cooperative, naming it “Decatur Swiss Cheese Co-op.” In January of 1960, Jordan Prairie
