Old Stone Church to offer Veterans Day Turkey Dinner Since WW2, the Old Stone Church, 101 East Union St., Ill. has served an annual sit-down Veterans Day Turkey dinner to the public in honor of all veterans. This year’s meal will be on Nov. 13 and, in the interest of safety, will be curbside only, with pickup between 4:30 and 6 p.m. and offer designated pickup times. Cost is $12 per meal or $10 per meal for five or more orders. We do request that a reservation be made and paid for by Oct. 29. Reservations are limited so please call the church at 815-624-6212 for details and make your reservation as soon as possible. No meal sales the night of the dinner. Office hours are Monday through Thursday 9 a.m. to Noon. If you reach the answering machine, please leave a message with your name and phone number and you will be called back as soon as possible.

Millions in adaptive sports grants help disabled Veterans with rehabilitation goals

Rockford Chapter NSDAR receives six Constitution Week proclamations Members of the Rockford Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) attended six Board meetings this month to receive proclamations from area governing bodies declaring September 17-23 “Constitution Week” in Winnebago County, City of Rockford, City of Loves Park, and the Villages of Cherry Valley, Machesney Park and Roscoe. The tradition of celebrating the 1787 signing of the Constitution was started many years ago by NSDAR. In 1955, the Daughters petitioned Congress to set aside September 17-23 annually for the observance of Constitution Week. The resolution was later adopted by the U.S. Congress and signed into Public Law #915 on August 2, 1956 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. The aims of the celebration are to emphasize citizens’ responsibilities for protecting and defending the Constitution and preserving it for posterity; to inform the people that the Constitution is the basis for America’s great heritage and the foundation for our way of life; and to encourage the study of the historical
events which led to the framing of the Constitution. Rockford Chapter NSDAR, organized in 1894, is a women’s service lineage society promoting patriotism, education and service to veterans for more than 125 years. Last year Constitution Day (September 17, 2020) was marked by members with a socially distanced ringing of handbells to share the commemoration of the signing on the steps of Winnebago County’s Veterans Memorial Hall in Rockford. In 1928, the NSDAR Daughters began work on a building in Washington, D.C., as a memorial to the Constitution. John Russell Pope, architect of the Jefferson Memorial, was commissioned to design the performing arts center, known as DAR Constitution Hall. Today, DAR Constitution Hall is the only structure erected in tribute to the Constitution of the United States of America. At its 125th Continental Congress convention in June, 2021 the organization celebrated the renovation of the hall. Local members attended virtually and were represented by cardboard “fan” cutouts in the refurbished seats.
The Department of Veterans Affairs awards nearly $16 million through its annual Adaptive Sports Grant program to 102 national and community groups offering adaptive sports and equine therapy. The 2021 grants will support more than 13,500 disabled Veterans and members of the armed forces to engage in sports opportunities, including cycling, equine therapy, kayaking, pickleball, hunting and skiing. Since 2014, VA has awarded grants to a variety of organizations such as Veterans Service Organizations, city and regional municipalities, and other community groups. “The Adaptive Sports Grant program is essential to VA’s sports medicine model and the rehabilitation system of care to improve Veterans’ health and wellness through sports and therapeutic programs,” said VA Director of National Veterans Sports Programs and Special Events Leif Nelson, DPT. “This program enables us to extend our reach into communities where Veterans
live, especially now when outdoor recreation and activities have shown benefits for boosting physical and mental health.” Recipients of VA’s Adaptive Sports Grants are headquartered in 32 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. The grants will also benefit Olympic and Paralympic national governing bodies which prepare athletes for high-level competition. A breakdown of VA’s Adaptive Sports Grants for fiscal year 2021: Number of Grants: 90 for adaptive sports. 12 for equine therapy. Amount of Grants: $14,502,124 adaptive sports. $1,495,627 equine therapy. Grant recipients can use the funds for planning, developing, managing and implementing adaptive sports programs. Grants are awarded annually, and recipients must apply each year for consideration.

Twelve Vietnam veterans were honored on Sept. 25 at the LZ Peace Memorial at Midway Village on Guilford Road in Rockford. As noted by Vietnam Veterans Honor Society Chairperson Todd Burd, “These veterans have died within the past couple of years.” Turnout for the event was tremendous. Poppy displays on exhibit at Veterans Memorial Hall A new temporary exhibit featuring VFW State Convention award winning Poppy Displays created by VFW Roscoe Post 2955 and Roscoe VFW Auxiliary is on display at Veterans Memorial Hall in downtown Rockford. The exhibit consists of three different displays. The first display, created by the Roscoe VFW Auxiliary represents the six branches of the military and has over 6150 poppies on it. This display took 1st place in category 2 (displays with over 1500 poppies) at the state convention held in Springfield this past June. The second display was also created the Roscoe VFW Auxiliary and represents Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, it features over 3425 all white poppies. This display took 2nd place in Category 3 (displays with decorative themes) at the state convention, and also won the Max and Betty Snook award in the VFW 6th District of Illinois. The Roscoe VFW Auxiliary Poppy Displays were created and assemble by Auxiliary members Cathy Suchoski, Anne Stenberg, Pat Ward, and Vicki Suchoski. The third display, created by VFW
Roscoe Post 2955 has 1750 poppies, and took 2nd place in Category 2, it honors Gold Star Families and was created and assemble by Ruben Hernandez VFW 2955 Post Commander and Bill Graves VFW Post 2955 Senior Vice Commander. This is not the first time the Roscoe VFW has taken first place for a poppy display, they won 1st place at the National Convention 2012 in Reno Nevada with a display representing USS Cole. The exhibit ran through October 31 and the displays will also be shown at the 80th annual Veterans Dinner, Nov. 6 at the Embassy Suites in downtown Rockford, Ill. The mission of Veterans Memorial Hall and Museum is to preserve, display, and share the artifacts of Rockford and Winnebago County Veterans who served in all branches of the military. Veterans Memorial Hall and Museum does this through outreach, exhibits, lectures, and other educational opportunities to visitors. We strive to be a contributing member of the redevelopment of downtown Rockford, Ill.

It stands adjacent to an actual Huey Helicopter from the Vietnam War era. The Memorial lists all of those local veterans who have died as a result of exposure to Agent Orange. The site is a beautiful and peaceful place and these veterans deserve the honor the Memorial brings to their memory and for their service to our country. Rockford veteran Nick Parnello founded the Vietnam Veterans Home Society in 1989 and it is under the auspices of the Vietnam Veterans Honor Society. 80th Annual Veterans Dinner to be at Embassy Suites The 80th Annual Veterans Dinner will take place at Embassy Suites, 416 S. Main St., Rockford from 5 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 6. The Veterans Dinner has been a tradition in Rockford for over 75 years. It began as a celebration of the Armistice of World War One and continues today to bring together area Veterans and people from the public and private sectors to honor all the Veterans in our community. This year’s keynote speaker will be Ryan Curry USMC Ret. Ryan Curry created “Beneath the Beard” an organization for Veterans coping with the residual effects of Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI) Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and other combat related mental health concerns. It is our core mantra that, “Pain shared is pain divided” and through our efforts
we can work to confront and battle these issues. Ryan found that sharing his story and experiences battling mental health issues not only helped others but himself as well. Ryan took that as an opportunity to give bock to others. When he has time outside of being a husband to an amazing wife and father to three beautiful daughters he helps as many people in need as he can. In addition to being a stand-up comedian, he is involved in many organizations and non-profits. On Nov. 11, 1918, The Great War unofficially ended when an armistice between the allied nations and Germany went into effect on the, eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. VA embarks on process to design new model to deliver seamless integrated care Veterans Affairs Secretary Denis McDonough said Oct. 5 the department will embark on designing a new integrated access and care coordination model to better deliver seamless care. Once the model is developed and implemented, with Veteran and Veterans Service Organization input, Veterans will see an integration of the care they receive through a VA medical facility and in the community. A new coordinated care model will strengthen VA’s ability to serve Veterans. Veterans will continue to receive care via in-person and virtual care appointments, both within VA and in the community. VA’s top priority is providing Veterans timely access to high-quality care. With implementation, we remain laser-focused on getting Veterans the right care, at the right time, in the manner that works best to meet their needs, preferences, and safety during pandemic conditions. The model will employ a three-phase implementation plan that will begin today. The first phase involves realigning the financial functions of Community Care under the Veterans Health Administration’s Office of Finance and beginning the design of the new integrated access and care coordination model. The second phase will include the realignment of the Office of Community Care and Office of Veterans Access to Care, establishing oversight for the completion and implementation of the integrated access and care coordination model. The third phase will include deploying the integrated access and care coordination in the field, with nationwide training of involved staff. VA will make iterative adjustments to the model based on Veteran and employee feedback. In fall 2020, VHA conducted a functional assessment of clinical, administrative, and financial operations to identify improvements related to how VHA manages Veterans’ access to care. This assessment identified opportunities to reduce overlap and duplication within care access and financial functions.

Veterans can apply for veteran drivers licenses, IDs Since July 1, 2015 U.S. military veterans have been able to get an updated driver’s license/ID card with the “VETERAN” under the signature on the front of the card. This designation helps ensure military veterans living in Illinois who have received an Honorable or General under Honorable Conditions discharge receive the services and benefits for which they are entitled. To receive the “VETERAN” designation on their driver’s license/ID card, the veteran may apply for a new, renewal or updated driver’s license or ID at any Secretary of State Driver Service’s facility by providing a copy of their DD-214, Certification of Military Service (NA Form 13038), NGB 22, or VA ID Card or DD Form 2 to the facility. Former members of the Guard and Reserve who do not have any periods of active duty other than their initial active duty for training and annual training are required to present a copy of their certificate of release or discharge from initial active duty and documentation of satisfactorily completing the time for which they were contracted to attend monthly drills and annual training. Presentation of one of the following documents will be accepted as proof of service at any Secretary of State Driver Service’s facility: 1. Army or Air National Guard NGB 22 Report of Separation and Record of Service 2. Army Reserve DARP FM 249-2E Chronological Statement of Retirement Points.

The designation will be added at no additional cost for first-time driver’s license applicants and driver’s license renewals. If veterans choose to add the designation before their renewal date, they may obtain an updated driver’s license for $5 and an updated ID card for $10.
