Welcome to the 2019 Boone County Fair Dear Friends of the Fair: The Granges of Boone County have once again put together another great six-day agricultural exhibition for you and your family and friends to enjoy. We’ve packed the grounds with over 5,000 head of livestock with everything from rabbits to alpacas to sheep to draft horses. There’s 4,000 non-livestock exhibits such as quilts, flowers, photographs, posters, vegetables and much more. Browse through the 400 vendors and merchants selling and promoting all types of goods, services and tasty food items. Take a break at the Entertainment Pavilion where you’ll find free local entertainment of all types starting at noon every day. Stop by there Wednesday at noon and see legendary WGN radio broadcaster Orion Samuelson. There’s more free entertainment throughout the grounds, from high-flying trapeze artists to a wild world of animals show. There are 200 antique tractors of all types, 4-H petting zoo and amazing magicians. There’s so much to see and do for only a $6 admission price. Buy a ticket to one of our wonderful grandstand shows including country greats Sara Evans and Mark Chesnutt Saturday evening. There’s also Truck and Tractor pulls, Bull Riding, and Demo Derbies. Don’t miss the Boone County Fair Queen and Little Miss Pageant, which is free to attend on Tuesday evening. Take a spin on a thrill ride at our outstanding Midway by Skinners Amusements. There are ride specials Wednesday and Thursday afternoons. There’s always something new to enjoy at the Boone County Fair. Visit our rebuilt horse arena with new fencing and lights. “Come out and see this. It’s a great show,” Sara Evans said. “I’ve got the best band around - but everyone says that. My son is in the band. He’s my lead guitarist. My brother plays bass and my sister sings harmony. “I started singing with my two older brothers at age 4 and by age 7 I was doing four hour gigs in bars, fairs… “I grew up on a farm and my parents listened mostly to country music. By the time I hit my teens I realized that this is what I was going to do. I moved to Nashville and met as many people as I could. I had a few contacts… I was so blessed - it didn’t take me long. “I would make demo songs, singing the demos for songwriters to audition to singers and record companies. I became known as the new demo singer in town. I was working all the time. Songwriter Harlan Howard introduced me to people at RCA and they signed me on the spot to a seven record deal. “Born to Fly Records is my own record label, where I recorded my current album. “All the proceeds from my Signature Series wine (nobody ever asks me about that) it was a limited edition but you can probably still find some, go to the CMA Foundation for music education - inner city schools, rural any school that needs it - to provide musical instruments and music teachers.” Multi-platinum entertainer Sara Evans is at the top of her game. With five No. 1 Country singles including “No Place That Far,” “Suds In The Bucket, “A Real Fine Place To Start,” “Born to Fly,” and “A Little Bit Stronger,” which spent two weeks in the top spot and was certified platinum by the R.I.A.A., Sara thrills audiences across the U.S. playing close to 100 shows each year and in 2018 headlined the “CMT Next Women of Country Tour.” Her “stunning, country voice” (Rolling Stone) has earned her the prestigious Academy of Country Music Top Female vocalist accolade as well as numerous American Music Awards, Billboard Music Awards, Country Music Association, CMT and Grammy Awards nominations. nthony Pages, son of William and Jill Pages will continue the family’s tradition of “The High Flying Pages,” with his wife Vanya Pages, and our newest generation, their daughter Penelope Pages. The High Flying Pages has toured all of the United States, and Europe! European medalist in Monte Carlo festival, Grenoble festival, Anthony and his wife were raised entertaining audiences worldwide. Along with their great talent, they give their show a special family touch. The High Flying Pages has entertained the world for over 25 years, breaking world records. After returning from Europe this winter, Anthony and his wife have put great thought into the 2019 production. 2019 production includes the high-packed power Flying Trapeze! For children, they have added a toy wind up dog production, presented by Tobi the clown and his best friend Tommy. Anthony will continue The Russian Swing, catapulting humans 30 feet off a giant swing, twisting and twirling through the air. Finally, he has decided to have motorcycles in his production, including The Globe of Death! Motorcycles full throttle in a round sphere, configuring a choreographed routine, and flying by each other, just inches apart.

Mr. D’s Magic and Illusion Show 2019

Mr. D, also known as Dirk Spence, was born in Terre Haute, Indiana, and moved to Tinley Park, Illinois, at the age of 5. He performed his first magic shows at 8 years old beginning with performances at his church and in his neighborhood. Like most kids do as they grow up, Dirk lost interest in his childhood hobby -- but then some real magic happened. When he was in his late twenties, a friend gave him the 1945 Chevy truck known as “Hard Times”. During the long process of refurbishing the truck, the magic “bug” bit him, giving him the idea of doing magic shows from the back of this unique vehicle. Was it a crazy idea or was it destiny? Maybe performing was in his blood. Mr. D’s grandfather, the late Jimmy Spence, performed in the early 1900s as a Scottish soloist with the traveling Vaudeville circuit, sometimes working at the same events as Harry Houdini. Regardless of how or why, it wasn’t long before Mr. D left his factory job and made magic a passion and a profession. His love for magic and for bringing smiles and happiness to children of all ages has made him one of Chicago’s busiest magicians! Greyhound jockeys or monkey jockeys are capuchin monkeys trained to ride racing dogs for sport. The use of monkeys as jockeys in greyhound races was recorded in Sydney at the Shepherd’s Bush Race course in Mascot, in Sydney, Australia, in 1927 and 1928. Monkey jockeys were still being used in greyhound races in Victoria, Australia, in 1938. In the United States, monkey greyhound racing is claimed to have begun as a fad in Palm Beach, Florida, in 1930, conceived

by Loretta and Charlie David. The couple obtained 12 female capuchin monkeys and over a period of two years trained them to ride greyhound racing dogs in specially designed saddle harnesses. The craze continued in America until the late 1930s before the public lost interest. Ever since then, the Banana Derby has always been a popular feature within the Fair industry. Crowds of people enjoy watching the monkeys racing around the tiny track while clinging to their various canine friends.

Groundbreaking alpacas return to the Boone County Fair Two years ago local alpaca owners made history by bringing their alpacas to the Boone County Fair for their premier appearance at an Illinois county fair. And the show has been a great success with hundreds of people flocking to visit these friendly animals. Deb Yeagle from Lindsey, Ohio was requested to judge the show. She came back last year and looks forward to being back again. “I judge for ALSA, the Alpaca Llama Show Association and for ILR, the International Llama Registry,” she said. “I have been judging for 25 years. I also judge llama and alpaca fiber as well as halter, showmanship, performance, and costume. In Ohio, some breeders only do fiber and can make a retirement living. They are really taking it to the next level as an income source.” The first alpaca show in Illinois was an Open Show. Both male and female, of any fiber color, and both alpaca breeds - Suri and Huacaya, were included in the same show. Suri alpaca have long, waving locks and Huacaya have a shorter, puffy, ‘cotton-ball’ look. The obstacle course always brings great amusement, as the alpacas do not always want to obey their handler and balk, back, and obstinately walk around an obstacle. But the costume contest is the real hit of the show when the alpaca and their handlers wear matching outfits. “I’m looking for coverage and if the animal compliments what the handler has on,” Yeagle said. “It shows the alpacas’ personality and what they will put up with.” Thousands of people stopped by to visit the alpaca tent last year. Fair President Lyle Lee hopes that the alpaca show will be even larger this year.

Flaming Monkeys 4-H Robotics Club, FRC Team 3352 We, the Flaming Monkeys, first started out as the Boone County 4-H Tech Team in 2009. As a team, we built, programmed Lego NXT Robots, and attended twoweek long camps. By 2010, most team members were in high school, or ready to enter high school. Our aging team decided to broaden our horizons and enter FIRST Robotics with a startup grant from JC Penney. We have been an ongoing FRC team since 2010. Every year, we have a fully functioning robot with autonomous capability. During the Fair we will be doing shows in the STEM Tent Tuesday through Sunday at 11:30 a.m.; 3 p.m.; and 6 p.m. On Sunday, we will do shows at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. If you’re curious about our name’s origin, many teams come from high schools so they use their school mascots as their team names. We decided to look at names from other area teams for ideas for our own name. Upon seeing the names ‘Thunder Chickens’ and ‘Exploding Bacon,’ we decided to throw out names until the eventual ‘Flaming Monkeys’ was adopted. Our club is small, and we accept 14 to 18 year-olds that are in the Boone County area. Our build season and competition seasons start January through April. We do presentations and have team meetings throughout the year. We also do a lot of events to show our team and show all of our accomplishments. To date, we have won: 2010 Midwest Regional Award 2014 CIR Imagery Award 2015 Midwest Imagery Award 2016 Midwest Imagery Award 2016 Midwest Regional Award 2017 Central Illinois Imagery Award FRC is short for ‘FIRST Robotics Competition.’ FRC is a worldwide competition for high-school aged students with over 4000 teams started so far. The FRC season kicks off the first Saturday in January every year. During ‘Kick Off,” the founders of FIRST (Woodie Flowers and Dean Kamen) introduce a new game live to the entire world. The worldwide organization FIRST stands for “For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology.” FIRST was started by Dean Kamen and Woodie Flowers with the purpose of getting youth, and people in general, excited about STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) by using fun. FIRST’s four divisions are Junior FLL (FIRST Lego League), FLL, FTC (FIRST Tech Challenge), and our FRC (FIRST Robotic Competition). Junior FLL teams include students from grades K through 3; FLL takes students from grades 4 through 8; and FTC includes students from grades 9 through 12. Educational experiences from all the levels are cumulative, allowing students to be involved in the same program without the worry of recycling the same information. However, the program’s design allows for students of all levels of intelligence on matters pertaining to STEMS, after all, building a robot isn’t rocket science. 4-H is a national organization that encourages youth to learn by doing. 4-H clubs offer youth the opportunity to gain leadership and public speaking skills as well as to develop mastery on projects of their choice. There are over 150 projects to choose from including robotics, agriculture, art, cooking, electricity, and

welding. 4-H members are encouraged to be involved in the community and do volunteer work as well. All 4-H clubs are run by a parliamentary system where the team votes on officers, develop budgets, and plans activities. The elected officers include president, vice-president, treasurer, secretary, and Federation delegates. Federation operates as a uniting club, where delegates make decisions and plan countywide activities for the Boone County 4-H community. Sponsors help our team do all of the events we go to and help us to be able

to build our robot. Sponsors are a huge part of our team. There are four levels for our sponsors, Platinum, Gold Silver, and Bronze. Sponsors can get their names on our brochures, robot banners, and t-shirts. To say Kid Davie is a veteran entertainer is an understatement. Although his professional career started 40 years ago, his first press came when he was just 4 months old. He made the Chicago Tribune for standing in his father’s hand. Balance has always come naturally to him, making stilt walking, ball walking, and slack rope walking look effortless. Growing up as a child this “Kid” would dream of being in the circus, doing all the things he saw. The skills of circus performers always got his attention. As a young man Kid loved to watch Red Skelton, Jerry Lewis, Danny Kaye, and Johnny Carson. When he learned that Johnny Carson got his start as a magician he jumped in with both feet practicing for hours and studying the likes of Houdini and Blackstone. Kid was also intrigued with another type of magic - the magic of mime. Watching Marcel Marceau and Shields & Yarnell, he loved the illusion of creating an image or thought with nothing more than movement. In the mid 1970’s he moved to the San Francisco area and performed at Fisherman’s Wharf doing street shows. Being interested in so many different forms of entertainment, it took awhile to realize he wanted to do it all. Years of practice later, ‘variety,’ seems like such a small word to describe his talents. To date Kid has performed in Canada, toured in Japan twice, and toured the United States for decades, performing at County and State fairs. He has performed at countless schools doing an inspiring show with several positive messages. He has also had his own children’s TV show, “Kidder’s Cartoon Castle” and was on “The Late Show with David Letterman“. Northern Illinois Outlaws present Cowboy Mounted Shooting at the Fair he Northern Illinois Outlaws will conduct a four-stage mounted shooting competition in the Pony Arena at the Boone County Fair. This family friendly sport is fun and exciting as a competitor or as a spectator. Cowboy Mounted Shooting is one of the fastest growing equestrian sports in the country. Mounted contestants compete in this fast action event using two .45 caliber single action revolvers similar to those used in the late 1800s by the American cowboys. Each gun is loaded with five rounds of specially prepared blank ammunition. Courses are set using ten balloon targets in specific patterns where the rider shoots the first five, holsters his/her gun, picks up the second gun and continues with the rest of the pattern. Mounted shooting events are similar to other rodeo events like barrel racing and pole bending as they are a timed event. The courses are designed to test the rider’s ability to control their horse at various speeds and turns while successfully shooting each balloon.

While speed is important, accuracy is equally as important for the competitor’s success. Penalties are added to their time for a downed barrel, missed balloon, or an improper course run. An average course normally takes between 15 and 25 seconds to complete. Competitors are broken into divisions based on ability, age, and gender. A rider moves up in levels based on the number of qualified competitions they have won. The Cowboy Mounted Shooting Association has developed the rules and guidelines for this equestrian sport. The Northern Illinois Outlaws Club has been runnin’ and gunnin’ around the northern portion of Illinois for over 12 years. Club members range from five years old (our wranglers) to our seniors who are in their 70s. It is a family friendly event with grandparents riding with grandchildren and best friends competing against each other. With the many different breeds of horses and the riders dressed in western gear (as outlined by the CMSA), this is an exciting, fast-paced sport to watch.
