Simple tips for recreating

Whether you’re looking to enhance your daily beauty routine or for tips to add glam to your style for an upcoming special occasion, Hollywood’s red carpet is the best source for trends and inspiration. Fortunately, many of today’s hottest looks are easy to create at home. Celebrity makeup artist Matin Maulawizada has tips to help you recreate your favorite red carpet looks in less time than you’d think.

GET GLOWING WITH TONER Celebrities always seem to have a special “glow” on the red carpet with dewy, fresh skin. This effect is intentional and it all starts with proper hydration. To achieve luminous skin, Matin starts by spraying the face with a toner or rose water to balance the skin. He likes to pair this glowing look with dramatic eyes and a soft pink lip.

APPLY FOUNDATION Get flawless skin thanks to perfectly blended foundation. For better application, Matin’s quick tip is to always warm the foundation first. “To get a sheer wash of foundation, I warm the foundation up in my hands before evenly distributing it on the brush and then I wipe the excess off the back of my hand,” he says. “This helps it blend seamlessly into the skin.”

PRIME THE LIPS

Whether you’re going for a nude lip or a bold hue, oftentimes, all eyes are on the perfect pout. Before applying any product to the lips, it’s important to ensure they are prepped and smooth. Matin starts with ChapStick Total Hydration Conditioning Lip Scrub to gently exfoliate the lips and remove any dead skin cells. “I love this scrub because it is made from naturally sourced ingredients, including sugar crystals, maracuja and coconut oils, shea butter and vitamin E,” he says. “It leaves the lips soft and smooth and turns them into a perfect canvas for any other products I will apply.”

SWAP LIP LINER FOR CONCEALER Matin recommends shaping the lip line with concealer rather than a lip liner to add definition. Contouring around the lip creates a natural-looking full pout. The bonus is that it prevents any color from bleeding, just as a liner would.’

BRING OUT YOUR NATURAL BEAUTY Tinted lip balms are great for a beautiful, subtle lip. Matin’s go-to is ChapStick Total Hydration Moisture + Tint because it adds a hint of color to enhance the lips’ natural color, while providing moisturizing benefits

the lips need. It’s currently available in three shades – Rose Petal, Merlot and Coral Blush – so there is a tint for any occasion. “Tinted lip balms are perfect for creating a naturally beautiful lip look,” says Matin. “Not only do they provide alluring color to the lips, but it is also easy to maintain throughout the night.”

It’s Your

FILE PHOTO Prom Guide 2017

Prom is a right of passage for many teens in the United States. There are steps high schoolers can take to make the night safe, while still having all the fun associated with going to the big dance.

Prom! Make it Safe, Healthy, and Fun

rom is one of the highlights of high school. While planning and enjoying the big night, make smart decisions to help keep it safe, low-stress, and fun! If you or someone you know is going to the prom, here are a few tips for a great experience.

GET IN SHAPE SLOWLY AND WISELY Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, eat less junk food (foods and drinks high in calories, saturated fat, salt, or added sugar), and don’t crash-diet. Choose drinks with no or low calories and fat. Water is always a great option. Find fun ways to stay active, such as walking, dancing, gardening, swimming, and more. Be active for 60 minutes a day most days of the week. Get plenty of sleep.

PROTECT YOUR SKIN Enjoy the skin you’re in, and protect it. You don’t need a tan to be beautiful, and

The Big

you definitely don’t need sunburn! Just a few serious sunburns can increase your risk for skin cancer later in life. Make sure you protect yourself from the harmful effects of UV rays, and avoid indoor and outdoor tanning. Use sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher.

FOLLOW DIRECTIONS, CAUTIONS, AND WARNINGS ON PRODUCTS

If you’re changing hairstyles, hair color, and using new cosmetics or products, carefully follow all directions, cautions, and warnings on the label. Dyes and relaxers can hurt skin, hair, and eyes. Never dye eyebrows or eyelashes, as it might cause blindness. Always test a product in a small area of your body first. Allergies may happen the first time or after multiple uses. For some people, using cosmetics may cause itching, redness, rash, sneezing, or wheezing. Stop using the product if problems develop, and remove all products before bedtime to prevent skin and eye irritation. If in doubt, let the professionals handle it.

PLAN AHEAD FOR SAFETY Tell family members or a trusted adult what your plans are ahead of time. Make an agreement with friends to check on one another during the evening. Be sure someone you trust is available for you to call if your plans change or you need help.

REMEMBER YOU DON’T NEED A DATE TO HAVE FUN Whether you plan to go with a date, with friends, or on your own, the point is to have a good time. Going with a group or meeting friends at the event can be just as fun as going with one special person. Whether you’re going solo or with a group, make sure you don’t drink and drive, or ride with someone who has been drinking.

Some people feel pressured to drink, smoke, use drugs, or have sex on prom night. However, drinking is responsible for over 4,500 deaths among young people each year and is associated with other problems like sexually transmitted diseases and unintended pregnancy. Alcohol and drugs hurt your judgment and may result in you being harmed or harming others. Just because others do something doesn’t make it a good idea or right for you. It’s OK to say no.

TRAVEL SAFELY Teen drivers are four times more likely than older drivers to crash. Always wear a safety belt – no matter how short the trip. Don’t drink and drive, and don’t get in a car with a driver who has been drinking.

Dating violence is a very real issue for many people. This type of violence can occur among heterosexual or same-sex couples. It can occur in couples who have

been together a long time and between people who just met. Many teens do not report it because they are afraid to tell friends and family. The abuse can be verbal, emotional, physical, or sexual. Know beforehand what your sexual boundaries are, and communicate those to your partner. Respect yourself and others, avoid alcohol and drugs, and tell family or call 911 if you or someone you know is being abused or is in danger.

PLAN FOR AFTER-PROM PARTIES If you plan to go to an after-prom party, be sure it is adult-supervised. Be aware of your surroundings. And it’s always good to go with a “buddy.” Avoid using alcohol and drugs. Make sure parents know where you are at all times in case of emergency. Call a parent, guardian, or someone you trust in case plans change or you need help. Source: www.cdc.gov.

is ideal for any age because it lets your true beauty shine while drawing the focus to the eyes. Matin recommends using a lighter pencil to get started and then smudging with a brush. You can use a powder shadow to fill in space and add definition. “For a dramatic eye, start with softer shades until you get the hang of it,” he says. “Use beige, taupe or grey to get a smoky effect that adds depth and drama.” For more information on Matin’s favorite lip products, visit www.chapstick.com.

Drive away distractions

PAGE 6 • PROM 2017

TO P R OT ECT T E E N S B E H I N D T H E W H E E L Today’s teens face more distractions than any generation before. Many don’t recall a time when they were not continuously connected to their friends. Cellphones, which might have been provided as a safety precaution in case mom or dad was running late picking them up from school – are now the source of constant messaging, sharing and media consumption. Teens send texts instead of passing notes in class. They share moments with their peers and the world in the form of photos and short videos. Music, food and transportation can arrive on demand, all with the swipe of a finger. Being away from their phones, even for a short period of time, can even cause a form of separation anxiety expressed in the acronym FOMO (fear of missing out). So it should come as no surprise that cellphone use is the offense most commonly associated with distracted driving. However, it’s not the only type of distraction. “A lot of people think they’re better drivers than they actually are, which is why they take unnecessary risks when they’re behind the wheel,” said Randy Petro, chief claims officer for Mercury Insurance. “We see a lot of claims related to distracted driving, including parents turning to scold arguing children, adjusting the infotainment system, and even taking photos while driving. Your first priority once you start piloting any vehicle should be to focus on the task at hand –driving.” Ten percent of all drivers’ ages 15 to 19 that were involved in fatal crashes were distracted at the time of the crashes, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. NHTSA also reports that 660,000 people drive distracted every day. Teens aren’t the only ones who feel the need to be connected – adults are guilty of it, too. Many of the teens that are glued to their smartphones have witnessed their parents answering emails at the dinner table or have seen them shoot a “quick text” while driving. Teens have grown up learning that this type of behavior is acceptable and maybe even expected. However, there’s a right time and a right place for everything. “The first thing parents need to do is practice what they preach. Teenagers won’t always be receptive to ‘because I say so’ or ‘because I’m the adult,’ especially if

Someone is killed every 53 minutes by a drunken driver

Parents should set a powerful example by committing not to drive distracted if they want their children to do the same.

they witness their parents actively engaging in a behavior they’re being told is bad,” adds Petro. “We as adults need to set a proper example – after all, we do have the advantage of more life experience.” If necessary, parents can also invest in technology to monitor and disable phones while their teens are driving to eliminate the temptation altogether. “No Instagram post, bite of a burger or playlist

According to the MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Drivers) website, Americans take 233 billion trips in cars each year. Of those, about one out of every 2,000 trips are taken by those who are driving under the influence of alcohol. Yet, almost one out of every three traffic deaths involve drunk driving. So a proportionally tiny amount of bad behavior is one of the major causes of death and injury on our roadways. Every 53 minutes on average, someone is killed in a drunken driving crash (9,878 people in total in 2011). Every two minutes, someone is injured because of this entirely preventable crime. About one-third of the drunken driving problem – arrests, crashes, deaths, and injuries – comes from repeat offenders. At any given point we potentially share the roads with 2 million people with three or more drunk driving offenses. Taking away their licenses isn’t enough; 50-75 percent of them drive anyway. This is why MADD wants to require ignition interlocks for all drunk driving offenders – it is their hope they can stop the offenders before they repeat their crimes. Two-thirds of the drunken driving problem comes from people who, before they kill or injure themselves

selection is worth someone else’s life. People are mainly in a car to get from point A to point B, and our wish is for them to do it safely,” says Petro. There are several excellent online resources that provide tips and information to help prepare teens for life behind the wheel, including Mercury Insurance’s Drive Safe Challenge and NHTSA’s Distraction.gov.

or others, have yet to be arrested. That’s why MADD works to support law enforcement to help deter drunk drivers through proven solutions like sobriety checkpoints. It’s also why the group strongly support research into technology that will eliminate drunk driving.

ABOUT MADD On Sept. 5, 1980, Mothers Against Drunk Drivers was incorporated and the mission as stated in its Articles of Incorporation were “To aid the victims of crimes performed by individuals driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, to aid the families of such victims and to increase public awareness of the problem of drinking and drugged driving.” In 2016, MADD’s efforts to significantly reduce drunken driving through the Campaign to Eliminate Drunk Driving as well as interest in defining it’s role in the fight against drugged driving, the board of directors revised it’s mission to reflect those priorities to, “The mission of Mothers Against Drunk Driving is to end drunk driving, help fight drugged driving, support the victims of these violent crimes and prevent underage drinking.” For more information, visit www.madd.org.

Paying for college

PROM 2017 • PAGE 7

OPTIONS REDUCE NEED FOR STUDENT LOANS While only a fortunate few students can expect a free college education by winning full academic or athletic scholarships, everyone can take advantage of a combination of academic aid, grants, fellowships, work-study and student loans to pay for a four-year degree, says Peter Gayle, a vice president for Prudential Advisors. Unfortunately, many prospective students and their families often don’t know where to look. With student debt increasingly becoming a long-term burden on graduates and families, adds Gayle, it’s never been more important to minimize the out-of-pocket expenses to put a student through college – and reduce reliance on student loans. To put the weight of student debt in perspective, The Federal Reserve Bank of New York noted that in 1995, 54 percent of graduates had loans averaging $11,491. It’s more recent data in 2015 showed 71 percent of graduates joined the workforce with student debt averaging slightly more than $35,000. What’s more, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York estimates 25 percent of those who owe federal student loans are delinquent or in default. The good news is that anyone willing to put in the time can likely find programs that help foot the bill – helping to reduce the need to take out loans – so a student’s education won’t break the budget or jeopardize a financial future. According to Gayle, families can take a few initial steps before choosing a school: • Learn how the financial aid process works and get the most out of options that don’t need to be repaid; • Understand each school’s actual net price – after financial aid – and set realistic expectations, choosing from the most affordable institutions; • Explore types of financial aid, including grants, work study programs and scholarships; examine the specific types of aid available per school and find out how much of a family’s demonstrated financial need each school will cover; • Understand the kinds of loans available, including a variety of federal loans and private loans, which may be used to fill any financing gaps after exhausting other options; and • Understand how parents’ “available income” is used to calculate how much parents are expected to contribute to their child’s education, especially for federal financial aid purposes. Several guides, including Prudential Financial’s www.prudential. com/payingforcollege, can help families take a carefully considered approach to financing a college education while safeguarding a student’s long-term financial future, including the ability to save for retirement. For families that must use student loans, the federal government is making it easier to understand how to borrow, process applications and repay loans through new online tools. Since 2010, all new federal loans, except Federal Perkins Loans, have been issued through the U.S. Department of Education, which offers information about borrowing and repaying loans. There are multiple options to repay federally funded student loans, which generally require repayments to start six or nine months after a student graduates, leaves school or drops to halftime enrollment. A few popular choices for repayment include types of income-driven plans, which calculate payments based on a borrower’s ability to repay. One catch: It’s critical to re-certify income and family size annually to avoid huge monthly payment increases. When debt becomes too burdensome, some loan programs offer forgiveness through public service, federal government employment, and options like teaching in underserved school districts. Private loans are trickier since there is no standard: Interest rates and repayment terms vary from lender to lender. It’s also worth considering the need for life insurance to cover the full loan balance to aid co-signers or beneficiaries in the event of the borrower’s death, says Gayle. Financial advisors would be well-equipped to help explore this and other options, Gayle notes. Employers are also beginning to offer employee student debt benefits to put their employees on a course for financial security. At Prudential Financial, for example, new employees hired through the company’s campus recruitment program beginning in January 2017 could earn an incentive of up to $5,000 toward paying off student loans after one year of service. Other companies match student debt payments with contributions to employee retirement savings plans. “Prudential Advisors” is a brand name of The Prudential Insurance Company of America and its subsidiaries located in Newark, NJ. College scholarships come in all shapes and sizes and billions of dollars are awarded each year. By applying to all the scholarships for which you are eligible, you can be sure you are not passing up any opportunity to reduce your potential debt down the line.

Tips to land a

college scholarship

If you are college-bound or already enrolled, experts say it’s worth investing the time to investigate scholarship opportunities -- even if you think you may not be eligible for most opportunities. According to a recent study, more than a third of college costs in the United States were covered by scholarships and grants in the 2015-16 academic year. “Scholarship money doesn’t have to be paid back, and it can significantly reduce outof-pocket college costs for families,” says Martha Holler, senior vice president at Sallie Mae, who also points out that scholarships are not just for star football players and valedictorians. From scholarships for dart players and vegetarians to filmmakers and those fluent in Klingon, available awards run the gamut and extend well beyond academics or athletics to a wide range of activities, interests, and affiliations. “Have a passion for designing greeting cards? There’s a scholarship for that! Interested in helping people understand the perils of texting when driving? There’s a scholarship for that too,” says Holler. With this in mind, Holler and the experts at Sallie Mae are offering the following scholarship tips.

BE THOROUGH Don’t overlook smaller scholarships. Even a few hundred dollars can help offset the cost of textbooks and supplies.

BE PROACTIVE Apply for scholarships every year. About

50 percent of available scholarships are for students already enrolled in college.

BE DILIGENT Pay attention to details. Follow instructions and proofread carefully. It’s important because careless mistakes can reflect poorly on the applicant.

BE CAREFUL Never pay for scholarships or for scholarship searches. School counselors and school financial aid offices can recommend reputable options. One such site is Scholarship Search by Sallie Mae, a free scholarship search tool that is home to five million scholarships valued at $24 billion dollars. The tool responds with matches that identify relevant scholarships and their award amounts, application requirements, and deadlines, and it automatically sends updates when it identifies new matches. Those who register are automatically eligible to win the Plan for College Sweepstakes, which awards $1,000 each month to a winner selected at random.

BE ON TIME Meet those deadines. If an application can’t be submitted electronically, use certified mail. Stay organized and ahead of deadlines by using automated calendar alerts. For more scholarship tips, visit SallieMae. com/ScholarshipSearch.
