Maintenance costs after the first year can vary greatly depending on the animal’s breed, whether it’s a cat or dog, and whether it’s an indoor or outdoor cat.

Just like human members of the family, pets need routine wellness checks to stay healthy and can also get sick or injured

If you’re one of the more than 90 million American households with a pet - congratulations! No matter which breed you’ve adopted or rescued, it’s likely your furry friend is an important member of the family. In fact, studies have shown that pets can help keep you healthy because they offer: • Companionship, • Unconditional love, and • Motivation to exercise. If you’ve already added a pet to the family or are considering adopting one, the rewards of pet parenthood are many, but it’s also important to understand the realistic costs of lifelong pet care and be financially prepared. Luckily, a recent study commissioned by Synchrony entitled “Lifetime of Care,” looked at the cost of the lifetime of care for pets, which ranges from $20,000-$55,000 for dogs and $15,000-$45,000 for cats. The findings were based on responses by 1,200 pet owners and 100 veterinarians and offers consumers clear insights, verified by veterinary practices, into the lifetime of care cost for a dog or cat. “Millions of Americans choose to share life with a pet, yet the true cost of ownership has historically been incredibly vague. Our Lifetime of Care study serves as a helpful tool to prepare prospective pet parents,” said Jonathan Wainberg, senior vice president and general manager, Pet, Synchrony. “We want pet parents to have a deeper understanding of what to expect financially, and knowledge of the flexible payment solutions that are available to help them manage the costs of care throughout their pet’s lifetime.” The first year of pet ownership tends to be the most expensive and includes

Lyme disease is one of the most common tick-transmitted diseases in the world. Lyme disease primarily affects people, but dogs also are at risk. Lyme disease is caused by a spirochete, borrelia burgdorferi, which is a type of bacterium, says VCA Animal Hospitals. Bacteria are contained in the bodies of blacklegged ticks, which are then passed to the host animal when bitten. Transmission of Lyme disease has been reported in dogs throughout the United States and Europe. It is most prevalent in the upper midwestern states, the Atlantic seaboard and the Pacific coastal states, advises PetMD. Even though Lyme disease is widely known for its effects on humans, pet parents should learn about the ways that tick bites can affect their furry companions.

6 things dog owners should know about Lyme disease

How heartworm affects household pets Pets are beloved members of many families. So it’s no surprise that so many pet owners place such a great emphasis on raising healthy pets, often going to great lengths to provide nutritious foods for their furry friends and protecting them from a host of dangers, including heartworm. What is heartworm? The American Veterinary Medical Association notes that heartworm is a serious and potentially fatal disease caused by a parasite that primarily infects dogs, cats and ferrets. According to the American Heartworm Society, the heartworm is one foot in length and lives in the heart, lungs and blood vessels of affected pets. What happens if a pet is infected with heartworms? Heartworms can cause severe lung disease, heart failure and organ damage. Where do heartworms pose a threat? Geography is not a factor that affects heartworms. The AVMA says heartworms pose a threat to pets in every state in the United States and various countries across the globe.

Are all cats and dogs vulnerable to heartworms? According to the AVMA, all dogs are susceptible to heartworm infection. Indoor and outdoor cats also are vulnerable to heartworm infection. The AVMA notes that heartworm is spread from animal to animal via mosquitoes, which can easily get into homes, potentially biting pets, including indoor house cats.

Do cats and dogs infected with heartworm react differently? The AHS notes that heartworm manifests itself very differently in cats than it does in dogs. In fact, dogs with heartworms whose conditions have not yet been treated may have several worms in their bodies, while cats with heartworms typically have three or fewer worms and may not have any adult heartworms. What are signs of heartworm in cats? The AVMA notes that diagnosing heartworm in cats is more difficult than diagnosing it in dogs, perhaps due to the smaller number of worms in infected cats than in infected dogs. Various tests may be needed to determine the likelihood of heartworm infection in cats, but such tests are not always conclusive. But potential warning signs of heartworm in cats include coughing, respiratory distress and vomiting.

What are signs of heartworm in dogs? The AVMA indicates that dogs may show no signs of illness if they were recently or mildly infected with heartworms. Signs may only develop when the worms reach adulthood. Dogs may cough, become lethargic, lose their appetites, or experience difficulty breathing. In addition, the AVMA indicates that dogs with heartworm infections may tire rapidly

after only moderate exercise. Is heartworm preventable? The good news for pet owners and their pets is that heartworm is entirely preventable. What to know about cat reproduction

Pet owners must take many things into consideration in their quest to keep animals healthy and happy. One of those considerations involves animal reproductive health. Veterinarians as well as animal welfare organizations urge pet owners to spay or neuter their pets, not only to provide various health benefits, but to help reduce overpopulation in pet communities. Cat pet parents must be especially diligent in their quest to squelch reproduction to help control cat populations. According to The Spruce: Pets, female cats that are not spayed will come into estrus (heat) as early as age four months. The animal health resource BondVet says a cat can go into heat as often as every two to three weeks. Generally, though, cats are seasonal breeders, indicates the United Kingdom-based RSPCA, which means heat cycles slow down in autumn. Another thing to note is that cats do not enter menopause like people and other animals. That means a female cat can continue to reproduce well into her senior years. Cats can become pregnant even during the first estrus cycle. A feline’s pregnancy lasts around 63 to 65 days, or about nine weeks. A cat also can be impregnated again

very quickly after giving birth, as nursing kittens will not prevent a subsequent pregnancy. The average litter size is three to six kittens, so it’s easy to see just how many kittens can be born of one cat if she’s left to her own reproductive devices. Females also can be mated by more than one male or even one of their male relatives. While there is still some debate among veterinarians as to the best age at which to spay or neuter cats, the general consensus seems to be the earlier the better, particularly if cats have access to other cats that are not fixed. This can occur as early as age six to eight weeks, while standard spays and neuters occur at five to six months of age. Vets who advocate for spaying before the first heat say it nearly eliminates the risk of mammary cancer, and spayed cats will not develop ovarian and uterine cancers, according to PetMD. Physiologically and behaviorally, cats are built to reproduce as frequently as possible. Poodles are popular because they don’t shed much, but also because they are an intelligent, obedient and versatile breed.

Golden retrievers

Golden retrievers are not the No. 1 family dog for nothing. Goldens are very intelligent and amiable. They often will do anything to please their owners. Labrador retrievers also take to training well and are very affectionate.

Papillon

Smaller dogs are often dubbed “stubborn” or “independent.” But papillons are incredibly smart and trainable and are naturally focused. The pet advisement site K9 of Mine warns that some of the smartest, most easily trained dogs may not necessarily be the easiest to live with. They can get bored easily and destroy things around the house if they can’t keep their minds occupied. This is a factor to consider when selecting a breed as well. (METRO CREATIVE)

issues. People know from experience what to expect when they go to a dentist for a cleaning, but a pet’s oral cleaning may be an unknown – and that can induce anxiety. Most cleanings follow a similar pattern and recognition of that pattern can give pet owners an idea of what to expect at a veterinary dental cleaning.

Anesthesia

One of the main differences between a dental cleaning for a person and one for a pet is the use of anesthesia. According to Kulshan Veterinary Hospital, pets do not willingly open their mouths to give veterinary dentists access to perform cleanings. Anesthesia ensures that the animal will remain still and the vet can remove any plaque and tartar that has built up. If a tooth needs to be extracted, sedation ensures that will go smoothly.

Pre-testing

Since anesthesia will be used, vets often will run lab work and an EKG to determine if a pet is healthy enough to receive anesthesia. Testing ahead of time also helps the vet make the best decisions regarding which types of anesthetics to administer and in what quantities.

Examination and cleaning

The vet will conduct a thorough

examination of the pet’s mouth, noting any abnormalities. A dental probe is often used to evaluate bleeding gums and detect pockets in the gums where food can accumulate and potentially lead to decay. After the examination, VCA Hospitals says tooth scaling will be performed, using both ultrasonic and hand scalers to remove plaque and tartar above and below the gum line. Teeth will then be polished to remove any microscopic scratches that can snag bacteria and lead to subsequent build-up.

Monitoring

Throughout the procedure, a pet’s vital signs are monitored and IV fluids are administered to keep the animal comfortable and safe. Before the pet is brought out of anesthesia, dental x-rays also may be taken to check for problems not visible to the naked eye. The pet also will be monitored after anesthesia in the recovery room.

At home

When the pet is released to go home, it is important for pet owners to keep up with dental cleanings. Do not use toothpaste designed for humans, as there are special animal-safe products for this purpose. Depending on what was done during the cleaning, the vet may prescribe antibiotics and/or pain medications. (METRO CREATIVE)

Cleaning a dog’s teeth is just as essential to the pet’s health as a nutritious diet, grooming and regular exercise. According to the American Kennel Club, keeping a dog’s teeth clean comes down to a few basic steps. • Brush teeth. Teeth brushing is the foundation of good oral health. Brush a dog’s teeth at least once a week or more frequently. Use toothpaste specifically designed for dogs. Never use toothpaste made for humans. • Offer dental chews. Rely on a dog’s natural inclination to chew with treats that also clean the teeth. Chews are designed to minimize the buildup of plaque. • Use special oral sprays: Investigate dog dental sprays that kill bacteria that can make a dog’s breath smell bad and contribute to tartar and plaque. • Provide plenty of chew toys. In addition to dental chews, regular chew toys also scour the teeth and improve oral health. Rotate several toys to prevent boredom. • Schedule professional cleanings. Dogs need dental cleanings and examinations at least every year. Some dogs are more susceptible to periodontal disease and will require more frequent cleanings. Consult a vet. It may take some time for dogs to get acclimated to having their mouths handled and their teeth brushed, but over time they can grow accustomed to the process. Some dogs may even enjoy it.
