he 170th Annual Walworth County Fair returns to the fairgrounds in Elkhorn on Aug. 28 and runs through Labor Day, Sept. 2. The annual festival puts the spotlight on agriculture in the area and gives the county’s youth a chance to shine. Often local 4-H members, the youth raise and show animals along with competing in multiple other contests to highlight farming and home-crafted goods and food. The festival is the largest county fair in the state and is a “dry” festival, with no alcohol served on the fairgrounds. The fair also hosts the largest demo derby in the state. Along with the agriculture judging, the fair features a large carnival, Kiddieland, Log Cabin demonstrations, Barnyard Adventure, live music, food vendors and more.

Opening ceremonies for the fair will be at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 28, on the Park Stage. The annual Fairest of the Fair competition finals are set for Sunday, Sept. 1, on the Park Stage.

FOR THE KIDS

The family friendly festival offers boatloads of fun for free on the fairgrounds. Kids of all ages can enjoy touring the barns and buildings, live entertainment, harness racing, horse pulls, the Nick’s Kid Show, Learning Coop, Log Cabin demonstrations, racing pigs and more. The Barnyard Adventure gives kids a chance to explore the workings of the farm. Children can pick apples, gather eggs, milk Helene the Holstein, drive a tractor, and harvest vegetables in the garden. The weekly event will feature a farm market element along with crafters, local food stands and a community counter. There are also plans to offer weekly themes or activity, or to feature a local event or organization. Contractor suspected of taking local couple’s money An Elkhorn contractor is suspected of spending more than $350,000 of a Town of LaGrange couple’s money for personal items including cars and a house. John M. Roberts, 59, was charged July 10 in Walworth County Circuit Court with theft by a contractor of more than $10,000. According to the criminal complaint, a Town of LaGrange couple hired Roberts’ business, Roberts Design Corp., to tear down and rebuild their Lauderdale Drive home for $1.625 million in August 2014. The couple paid Roberts $81,250 down that month and then made deposits into an escrow account with Chicago Title Co. from which Roberts could withdraw for expenses related to the couple’s project, according to the complaint. Between November 2014 and June 2015, Roberts deposited nearly $905,000 from the escrow account into his own bank account, according to the complaint. During that time, deposits into Roberts’ account that were from sources other than the account to be used for the couple’s project were less than $20,000. During the same time period, Roberts wrote more than $360,000 in checks from his business account that were unrelated to the couple’s project and including things like the purchase of vehicles including a $52,000 Mercedes and a lake home, checks to himself including one for $134,292 and his wife, payments to attorneys and related to a restaurant he owned, withdrawals of up to $10,000, a $5,000 payment to the Department of Revenue, payments of $3,270 and $1,695 to We Energies, according to the complaint and $20,000 to a boat repair shop. Work on the couple’s project stopped when Roberts was convicted of theft by deception

related to another construction contract on June 8, 2015, according to the complaint. The couple began paying some subcontractors on their own because Roberts had stopped paying them. They paid GF Construction $13,500 and Komfort Heating and Cooling, $11,050 but Dial One

was still owed $17,797, Innovative Plumbing was owed $7,188 and Weber Builder’s, $24,650, the complaint states. The couple hired an attorney and prepared for a civil trial that was to take place in June 2018 but was postponed when Roberts filed for bankruptcy, according to the

complaint. During testimony in preparation for the civil case, Roberts acknowledged the $134,292 check to himself in 2015 was to buy property in Michigan but claimed the money was from a line of credit on his main house, the complaint states. He said $30,000 in payments

he made to Rock Track and Trail during the time frame he took deposits from the escrow account came from a personal line of credit. He said the payments for his wife were used to pay her credit card that was used to buy lumber for the project, according to the complaint.

ike many restaurants, Mama T’s Italian Eatery in Elkhorn started with a leap of faith. “When we got together – we’ve been married a year – we tossed around the idea and decided with his cooking and restaurant background, and my marketing experience, we have a good shot,” Laura Taylor said. She was referring what she and her husband, Brian, hope will be a successful restaurant venture. The couple lives in Burlington, but Brian is from the Elkhorn area and both of them work in Elkhorn, in addition to running their new restaurant. Brian said he’s always loved to cook. “My grandfather was Italian and a very good cook. It was always a dream of mine to open a restaurant,” he said, adding that he worked at several restaurants in the area, including Next Door Pub and La Gustosa’s, in Lake Geneva, doing everything from dishwashing to helping in the kitchen. Brian was the original owner of Vesuvio’s in Delavan, which was successful and he ultimately sold five years later. He ran Portabella Grille in Elkhorn, which is now Calabria, for a couple of years. He also had a place in Whitewater, which he said was challenging and short lived. “At that time no one wanted to pay more than $5 for a pizza so it didn’t work. It would probably be more successful now as things have changed there,” he said. Mama T’s features the same food that is Brian’s signature and the goals for making the restaurant a success are somewhat simple. “The vision was to be family-friendly but also have that romantic feel and yet be affordable,” Laura said. “We aimed to offer appetizers, sandwiches and entrees between $7 and $15 so it really is affordable,” Brian added. Mama T’s is currently open for dinner but the Taylors hope to expand those hours soon. “We wanted to get the basics ironed out but hope to expand with a goal of being open for lunch in September. We’re planning a limited lunch menu so people can get in and out and back to work,” Laura said. They said people who haven’t been to the restaurant at 781 E. Geneva St., Elkhorn, since it became Mama T’s are surprised by the many changes. “We did a lot of work: new flooring, we painted, added partitions and chair rails and window blinds. We love how it turned out,” Laura said. Having only been open a few weeks, they said the response – including several return customers – has been very positive. “Word-of-mouth has been wonderful with many people who come in saying they heard about it from so-and-so. Facebook has been huge, too,” Laura said. Among the reviews on the restaurant’s Facebook page, several people commented on the good food, variety of options and affordable prices, and just as importantly, how they were treated by staff. “I’m in marketing so I talk to people,” Laura said. “I love meeting people and talking to people – that’s where I excel. But I also talked to staff about making eye contact, finding out how they heard about us, and I also ask how they liked it because we really do want them back.” Mama T’s, in addition to the

owners, has four waitresses and a helper in the kitchen. But they’ll be looking for more help once the college students go back to school. “I love the staff we have. It’s seriously the best crew – friendly and they have great personalities. We lucked out,” Laura said. She also said her and Brian’s families have been very supportive and have stepped in and helped as needed. The menu includes appetizers, fresh mixed salads, pizza, sandwiches, pasta bowls and Italian specialties. It’s easy to spot Laura’s favorites on the menu. “The ones named Mama T’s – beef supreme sandwich, meat lasagna and the fantastic wings, which is an appetizer – those are my favorites,” she said. “And I’m a picky eater.” The menu also features burgers and chicken strips as well as a Friday night fish fry with the fixings. Among the dessert entrees is homemade cannoli and tiramisu and as soon as the license is approved, the restaurant will serve wine, beer and sangria. Laura said she and her husband compliment each other well and while opening the restaurant is a risk, she said they both believe it’ll be a success. “He’s an amazing cook and I love talking so it works well,” she said. “Taking a risk like this – with a little family place – we know that personal touch can’t be replaced. Two girls die, three people injured in crash A 14-year-old girl from Waterford and her cousin, 7, were killed Aug. 1 when the SUV they were riding in collided with a semitrailer truck in Whitewater. Kaylinn Wilken, 14, of Waterford, and Olly Koelsch, 7, of Boise, Idaho, died in the crash, according to the Walworth County Sheriff’s Office. Kaylinn’s mother, Kristina Wilken, 44, her uncle, Michael Koelsch, 42 – the father of Olly Koelsch – and Olly’s twin sister were injured in the crash. All three of the injured were taken to hospitals for treatment. Their conditions were not available. A visitation and funeral for Kaylinn Wilken was held Aug. 7 in Burlington. Kaylinn was a recent graduate of Fox River Middle School in Waterford. Officials with the Waterford Graded School District offered counseling services to students in person or by phone on Monday and Tuesday of this week. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the Wilken and Koelsch families during this difficult time,”

school officials said in a statement posted to the district’s website. The girls were riding in a 2003 Ford Excursion, which was towing a camper north on Highway 12, when he crash occurred about 7:30 p.m. According to the Sheriff’s Office, the SUV driven by Kristina Wilken turned left onto Walworth Avenue/Highway N in front of the oncoming semitrailer tanker truck. The truck struck the SUV in the rear passenger side and both vehicles ended up in a ditch alongside the highway, according to the Sheriff’s Office. The three girls were in the back seat of the SUV and Michael Koelsch was in the front passenger seat. The camper towed by the SUV suffered extensive damage in the intersection. The tanker pulled by the semi truck was empty at the time of the collision, according to officials. The driver of the truck, Allen Guthrie, 56, of Elkhorn, was not injured. The crash remains under investigation by the Walworth County Sheriff’s Office Crash Investigation Unit. Agencies that assisted at the crash scene include: City of Whitewater Police and Fire and Rescue Departments, University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Police Department, Rock County Sheriff’s Office, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Ryan Brothers Ambulance, Wisconsin State Patrol, and the Walworth County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Adventure has won numerous awards from the International Association of Fairs and Expos, the umbrella fair organization of all fairs across the country. The Barnyard Adventure Stage is in Kiddieland next to the Barnyard Adventure Tent and the Pony Rides and hosts multiple family friendly acts all day long at the fair. The Barnyard Adventure Tent has handson activities for the kids, including a corn and soybean bin, honeybee display, canning demonstration, classes on hydroponics and cloning, and other educational activities. Barnyard Adventure requires the help of about 25 to 30 volunteers to guide the children and their families through the various stations of “From Seed to Supper.” The job of the volunteer is to help the little farmers maximize their experience by making sure that each simple step is completed.

BUTTERFLY BARN

Kids at the fair love the Butterfly Barn as they try to catch one of the winged creatures and learn about their habitat and lifecycle. The barn is filled with all the foods butterflies love, including amaranth, butterfly bush and goldenrod. The butterfly barn was built for indoor plants and about 250 butterflies. Around May, the Walworth County Fair will receive a shipment of caterpillars and nourish them into butterflies for the fair. Dozens of adult butterflies also are ordered; so there will be plenty in the barn during fair week.

SPECIAL ATTRACTIONS

Headlining at the fair this year are country band Home Free on Saturday night and Christian rock band Newsboys United Sunday night. The Newsboys were scheduled for the fair in 2018, but severe weather cancelled the concert. Tickets for both concerts are on sale at walworthcountyfair.com. The Grandstand is also where you’ll find the Flat Track Motorcycle Races, truck and tractor pulls, monster trucks, horse events and the demo derby. LBA’s 30th Annual Parade of Homes set Lakeland Builders Association will present its 30th Parade of Homes on Saturday, Sept. 14 and Sunday, Sept. 15 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. It provides an opportunity to meet LBA members who have created unique, beautifully crafted homes. During the Parade, visitors will see incredible design ideas, unique materials, and the latest home building trends. 1) This year’s first home, by KLM Builders, 2117 Matthew Ave., Twin Lakes. is located at 2208 Matthew Ave., in Twin Lakes’ Whispering Oaks, a community of single family homes. Farm Aid bolsters Alpine Valley’s lineup EVENT AIMS TO HELP STATE’S STRUGGLING DAIRY FARMS Farm Aid’s annual music and food festival will return to Wisconsin for the second time in its history on Saturday, Sept. 21, at Alpine Valley Music Theatre in East Troy. Farm Aid, an organization launched in 1985, looks to build a vibrant, family farm-centered system of agriculture in America through fundraising for programs supporting food from family farms. Headlined by Farm Aid founder and board member Willie Nelson, the 2019 event will feature other board members, like John Mellencamp, Neil Young and Dave Matthews with Tim Reynolds as well as several other prolific performers. Those performers include Bonnie Raitt, Nathaniel Rateliff and The Night Sweats, Margo Price, Jamey Johnson, Tanya Tucker, Brothers Osborne, Lukas Nelson and Promise of Real, Yola and Particle Kid. The annual music and food festival, which made its first, and only Wisconsin appearance in 2010 at Miller Park in Milwaukee, decided on Alpine Valley in response to the growing agricultural crisis in Wisconsin. Statewide, the dairy industry generates $43.4 billion annually, which fuels the economy at a rate of more than $80,000 per minute. Although the dairy industry boosts the state’s economy, dairy farmers have struggled, with Wisconsin losing nearly 700 dairy farms last year. Nelson said Farm Aid’s return to Wisconsin is imperative in a press release. “With devastating weather, low prices and harmful farm and trade policies, America’s family farmers are facing immense challenges to hold on to their farms. It’s not right … family farmers are essential for all of us,” Nelson said. “By bringing our festival to the heart of the struggle, we will stand side by side with farmers. Walk the trail

The Walworth/Jefferson chapter of the Ice Age Trail meets every Wednesday morning to hike the trail. “Whitewater is a trail community and one of the best things about this chapter is we hike every single Wednesday,” Whitney said. “We meet at the parking lot at 10:15 (a.m.) and leave at 10:30 to hike. “We can have 40 people show up and we have two groups, short- distance hikers and long-distance hikers, It’s a great way to meet people. It was a beautiful hike today; I led the long hike and we did 7 miles. The short-distance hikers usually go 3 or 4 miles.” Whitney said the group has been doing the weekly walks since 2001 and can have up to 40 walkers on any given week. “I have new hikers all the time and they tell me they’ve been thinking about it for a long time and they just showed up, and that’s all you have to do for this is show up and go hiking,” he said. And dress for the weather, because the hikes go on, rain or shine, hot or cold, dry or wet. “It doesn’t matter. It can be 20 degrees or 80 and we’re out there in all kinds of weather,” Whitney said.

History of the

Ice Age Trail The stories of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail and Ice Age Trail Alliance are a mix of vision, conservation and passion involving both famous Wisconsin politicians and thousands of private citizens. During the 1920s, extreme flooding of the Milwaukee River, coupled with increased recreation needs of the growing city of Milwaukee, focused attention on the Kettle Moraine, a scenic belt of glacial ridges in southeastern Wisconsin. The Milwaukee chapter of the Izaak Walton League purchased 800 acres around Moon Lake (now Mauthe Lake) in the northern Kettle Moraine in 1926. Ten years later, the Kettle Moraine State Forest was established and volunteers began constructing its first hiking trails. Among the leading proponents for the protection of the Kettle Moraine was Raymond Zillmer, a lawyer by profession and an avid walker, mountaineer and student of natural history. He explored the wildlands of northern Minnesota, mountaineered in remote areas of the Canadian Rockies (Mount Zillmer in the Cariboo Range was named in his honor) and followed the development of the Appalachian Trail. Zillmer was twice responsible for personally convincing two governors to increase land acquisition funding for the Kettle Moraine State Forest. In the 1950s, Zillmer envisioned the Kettle Moraine State Forest forming the nucleus for a much larger linear park that would be used “by millions more people than use the more remote national parks.” He pictured extending the Kettle Moraine Glacial Hiking Trail along the terminal moraine of the most recent continental glaciation for several hundred miles. In 1958, Zillmer founded the Ice Age Park & Trail Foundation (now the Ice Age Trail Alliance) to begin efforts to establish a national park in Wisconsin that would encompass this route. Later that year, Daniel Tobin accompanied Zillmer for several days of inspection along the proposed route. Zillmer was capturing the interest of the National Park Service, conservationists and political leaders. Bills were introduced in Congress to create an Ice Age National Park in Wisconsin. Yet just as creation of this new type of national park was gaining momentum, Zillmer died. The vision of the Ice Age project being a linear park and trail, similar to today’s Appalachian Trail, almost passed with him. Later in 1961, the National Park Service concluded that, while many of the unique glacial features of Wisconsin warranted national attention, a park hundreds of miles in length would be too difficult to administer. Grassroots supporters, State of Wisconsin officials and NPS staff went back to the drawing board. What they came up with was the Ice Age National Scientific Reserve, an affiliated area of the National Park System composed of nine separate units around Wisconsin. In 1964, thanks to the efforts of Congressman Henry Reuss, the Ice Age Reserve legislation was passed by Congress and signed by President Lyndon Johnson. In the early 1970s, the Ice Age Trail Council was formed to carry out Zillmer’s vision for a long-distance hiking trail. Older trails on public lands, such as the Glacial Hiking Trail in the northern Kettle Moraine State Forest, became building blocks for the Ice Age Trail. Volunteers constructed new trail segments along much of the remaining route. Many of these new segments were built on private land after volunteers received handshake agreements with the landowners. The Ice Age Trail Council merged with the Ice Age Park and Trail Foundation in 1990, which then changed its name to Ice Age Trail Alliance in 2009. Following the trail’s first successful through-hiker, and under the sponsorship of Reuss, the Ice Age Trail finally joined the National Trails System. Penwern: A Delavan Lake estate by Frank Lloyd Wright BY Judith Siers-Poisson CONTRIBUTOR

Architect Frank Lloyd Wright’s influence is visible in well-known Wisconsin sites like Taliesin, his home and studio in Spring Green; the Johnson Wax Administration Building in Racine; the First Unitarian Society Meeting House in Madison; and many private homes across the southern part of the state. But less-well known are the cluster of summer residences on Delavan Lake that he designed in the first years of the 20th century. To this day, Chicagoans and others flock to the lakes in southeastern Wisconsin to escape the heat of the city. In the early part of the 1900s, there were five large resort hotels and numerous small cottages on Delavan Lake available to visitors Mark Hertzberg, author and photographer of “Frank Lloyd Wright’s Penwern: A Summer Estate,” said prominent Windy City businessmen wanted private retreats where they could continue their active social lives. While many chose Geneva Lake, Delavan Lake to its west was favored by Henry H. Wallis of Oak Park, Ill., where Wright maintained his home and studio. In 1900, Wright designed a summer residence for Wallis to be on Delavan Lake, but the house was never built. Wallis, however, was also a developer, and was marketing small lots on the lake to those in his business and social circles. One was Fred B. Jones, a successful traveling salesman for Adams & Westlake, which made hardware for all manners of transportation, including steamships, streetcars, and the burgeoning railroad industry. Jones purchased several of the lots Wallis was selling in order to have enough land for the grand summer estate he envisioned. Hertzberg says the exact connection between Jones and Wright is not clear, but with numerous business and social contacts in common – including Wallis – it is not surprising the businessman tapped

the up-and-coming architect to design the residence, which would be called Penwern. When he designed Penwern, Wright was still developing his aesthetic. “He’s in a transitional stage of his career,” Hertzberg explained. “He’s begun to design with elements of what people know as the ‘Prairie style’ of his architecture in 1900, with the Bradley and Hickox houses in Kankakee, Ill. The first full Prairie style house, the Ward Willits House in Highland Park, Ill., comes in 1902. So, there are some elements of the Prairie style in Penwern.” Penwern sits on a 10-acre site, with 600 feet of lakefront and an enviable view of Delavan Lake. The Wright design included four structures, the main house with a 5,600 square-foot floor plan, a boat house, gate lodge and stable. Like his peers, Jones wanted to be able to entertain at his summer

residence in the same manner he could when he was in Chicago. And much of his social life in the city focused on the Chicago Athletic Club, which was a men’s club downtown. In addition to a billiards room, one of the features of Penwern that echoed the men’s club atmosphere was the tower on the main house that Wright referred to as the pavilion. The structure was designed as a place for the men to retire in order to play cards.

much grander than the term implies. “It’s interesting, these are called summer cottages. In my vernacular, only one of the five he designed on the lake, the Spencer House, is diminutive enough to be considered a cottage,” Hertzberg said of the George Spence Summer Cottage on Lake Delavan. As with any nearly 120-yearold house, and particularly one on the National Register of Historic Places, restorations and renovations are not undertaken lightly. The Penwern estate has always been in private hands, and current owners Sue and John Major have owned it since 1994. Hertzberg said the Majors were fortunate that previous owner John O’Shea found 17 original drawings for the buildings on the property. These drawings were integral to their plans to bring Penwern back to the original vision that Wright created for Jones. In comparing those drawings

with the current structures, they realized Jones himself had built two additions within the first 10 years of Penwern’s existence; additions Hertzberg called “unsightly.” One of those additions covered three of the six windows in the dining room, Hertzberg said. The Majors decided to remove that structure. Between 2002 and 2005, the Majors rebuilt the boat house according to the Wright designs. The original building had been lost to arson in 1978, and only one original sheet of drawings with four views of the building could be located. Built on just the remaining foundation, “the boathouse looks pretty much as it did in 1902 when it was constructed,” Hertzberg said, adding it was a “Herculean task, and great commitment to restoration of the estate.” Of course, many people in the area only knew the later version of

Suspect eludes officers on land, in the water

Whitewater Police Department seeking multiple charges after chase The Whitewater Police Department was seeking multiple charges against a suspect who eluded law enforcement after being taken into custody late last month. The Whitewater PD responded to a call from a City of Jefferson resident at 10:50 p.m. July 20. According to a press release from the PD, the resident reported that a 22-yearold Palmyra man, who reportedly violated a court order and who was out on bond from a previous charge, was consuming alcohol at V’s Waterfront Venue, located at 292 S. Wisconsin St. in Whitewater. The release states that officers located the suspect inside V’s Waterfront and took him into custody. While changing from traditional handcuffs to a transport belt, the suspect ran from officers and entered Cravath Lake. A search ensued, and the WPD requested boat assistance from additional agencies. Whitewater Fire & Rescue, the City of Jefferson Fire Department, the Town of Linn Fire Department, the Delavan Fire Department and the Walworth County dive team responded. Additional resources from the UWWhitewater Police Department, Walworth County deputies and Janesville’s K-9 Unit also arrived to assist. According to the news release, the suspect was located within about 30 minutes but continued to evade officers by swimming and concealing himself in the lake. He ultimately was taken into custody just before 2 a.m. that Sunday. The WPD is seeking charges that included felony escape, bail jumping, resisting/obstructing an officer and violation of probation. The case was presented to the Walworth County District Attorney’s office early that week.

The Old World Foundation raised $16,000 for historic restoration projects at Old World Wisconsin at the recent Sunset Soiree event. Old World Wisconsin, W372 S9727 Highway 67, Eagle, is an outdoor living history attraction with more than 60 historic buildings, 100 animals, 20 heirloom gardens, and nearly 100 costumed facilitators and volunteers who bring history to life for about 60,000 visitors each year. The historic buildings that stand at Old World Wisconsin were relocated from towns and villages around Wisconsin to be preserved. These buildings set the stage for interactive historic exploration to begin. Only 152 tickets were available to the exclusive event that organizers say will become an annual tradition. Guests enjoyed Italian and German appetizers and entertainment in the

One element is the open floor plan for the living areas, as well as the use of a “path of discovery,” or “compression and release” that gives the

viewer a sense of expansion into the residence. Hertzberg describes the effect as “you come in under a low ceiling, but you can see into these other rooms – you’re invited in.” Penwern also features “ribbon bands” of windows throughout the home and casement windows Wright preferred to doublehung windows, which he referred to as “guillotines.” “These are some of the elements that you will see in full maturity of his Prairie style a year or so later,”
