nne Goodwin, author of the books “Come to the Lake” and “Stay for Lunch,” has a strong background in communications, branding and printing. But writing awardwinning books was a little less premeditated for her. Goodwin, who has spent every summer at Pleasant Lake in Walworth County for the past 36 years, describes the rarity of the cottage lifestyle in 2018. “Matthew’s parents found one of the cottages in the 1950s. In the ‘50s, his mom started saying ‘no TV here.’ We try to hold on to that analog life. That’s a fleeting thing nowadays,” Goodwin said. Her book “Come to the Lake” slowly evolved from her intention of documenting their unique way of life. “I’ve always been a notetaker and journal writer. It was after my children, who are in their 20s now, stopped needing me on such a daily basis – that’s when I needed something else to do,” Goodwin

said. “I consider myself an accidental author. If I were to have said aloud, ‘I’m going to write an award-winning book,’ it would have seemed really daunting. For anyone who thinks they might want to write a book, first write a story. First, get used to expressing yourself on paper,” Goodwin said.

When it came time to publish her first book in 2008, she realized that she wanted to self-publish. “My purpose as an author is to provide my reader with a pleasurable pause. That’s why my publishing company was called Pleasurable Pause Press. I decided to self-publish so no one could tell me, ‘This isn’t a good cover’ or ‘The book needs to be longer,’” Goodwin explained. Her press uses offset printing, a traditional method that rarely is used in book printing anymore.

Family life Anne and her husband, Matthew, have four sons. Her husband is a musician, and one of her sons studied jazz trumpet in college. “We create together as a family and encourage creativity,” Goodwin said. Her first book, “Stay for Lunch,” tells the story of an unexpected friend connection. “As I was driving, someone had a car accident. I stopped to help. Here she was, a tiny bird of an old woman, with a bone sticking out of her leg. I was 31; she was 86. For

the first four hours we met, we held hands. Ten years later, I wanted to tell the story of it,” Goodwin said. Goodwin was a communications major and English minor in college. “Professionally, my work was in

I’ll see a heron, and I can’t wait to get home and write about it. I experience something and take a note of it. Saturdays on the Square A new but old tradition returns to Elkhorn this year with Saturdays on the Square, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturdays in Veteran’s Park downtown, through Oct. 12 (other than on July 6 and Aug. 31.) The weekly event will feature a farm market element along with crafters, local food stands and a community counter. There are also plans to offer weekly themes or activity, or to feature a local event or organization. In an effort to expand the community outreach at Saturdays on the Square, local clubs and nonprofits as well as businesses are welcome to show their products or share information. Goodwin reflected. Goodwin reflects on how her books can provide a pleasurable pause for readers. “Even though ‘Come to the Lake’ is a personal and singular story about a tiny lake, it has a universal appeal to it,” she said. “You need to first disconnect in order to connect with those around

Transportation needs for homebound people discussed BY Cathy Kozlowicz CORRESPONDENT

Town of LaGrange resident Lynn Greene did not even bother making plans for Christmas. Not even to go to a family function. She has an electric wheelchair and can only get in a vehicle that has a motorized ramp due to having multiple sclerosis. “That is the only way to go somewhere so I use VIP Services as they do have that,” Greene said. “I had no options,” she said. “Because I am already dealing with a handicap, it is also social handicap because we can’t go anywhere.” Because of these transportation challenges, community member Robert Peryea approached Walworth County’s transportation coordinating committee earlier this year and proposed having volunteer drivers use VIP Services’ vans on Sundays and holidays. “I would love to help. This would allow people to go to church and family gatherings. Families cannot always afford to buy the vans (that have the lifts),” Peryea told committee members. He said that he, and his wife, Brenda, could be volunteer drivers and as such would assist people in the community when the VIP Services are closed. He also said his wife can help with grant writing, if needed, as she is specialized in this. County Administrator Dave Bretl said there may be insurance liability issues of using volunteers but appreciated the issue being brought up. “We should look into this,” he said. “We would hate to turn anyone away.” Peryea also said there are residents who may wish to attend Sunday church but could not due to transportation issues. “Church is a good example. Personally, I do not need to, but many people would like to,” Greene said. “I would like to go somewhere on Sundays. The 100 percent volunteer-run Walworth County Food Pantry provides assistance to about 500 families per month and about 60 people stop in the food pantry during their open hours on a given day. They help provide a second food options for people who use the local food pantries and still need additional food a month. Their services include providing the senior drop box program and diaper assistance. need. And Nick always knew he wanted to be a farmer. Since he was 2 years old, his father said. “I thought he was nuts,” Dominic said. The Sergi family did not have a farm, and the family was in the business field. Nick, however, was always true to his dream, loved the outdoors, and worked on different farms such as the mushroom farm, in summers and as a young adult. He loved the cold, snowy blizzards in Wisconsin so much that when his family was in Australia, preparing to go scuba diving, Nick immediately booked a flight to Wisconsin because there was a huge snowstorm. He wanted to go snowmobiling. He saved money, every cent, his family said, to buy Sergi Farms, located in Elkhorn, in 2017. It was the outgrowth of his passion for the land and animals, which inspired him to create a humane and healthy approach to producing delicious, nutritious beef. “It was the best day of his life (when he bought the farm),” his father said. “He worked hard and saved well.” The farm started out with a respectful size herd and number of pastured acres in 2013. Problems not going away Group takes Highway 12 issues to new governor, legislators

Members of the Greater Whitewater Committee Inc. (GWC) delivered a letter to new Gov. Tony Evers’ office earlier this year, describing the work they have done to convert Highway 12 into a four-lane highway between Elkhorn and Whitewater. The four-lane stretch of Highway 12 ends in Elkhorn and changes to a two-lane highway over that 18-mile stretch to Whitewater. According to a news release from the group, this fact creates unsafe congestion of drivers throughout the year, especially during the summer. A Southeastern Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission study from 2016 revealed the average annual daily traffic volume exceeds the 14,000 capacity. The SEWRPC study also found 15 percent of the total number of crashes were fatal or observed injury, which exceeds the state average by 18 percent. The group contends that traffic continues to grow annually, as does the danger of a two-lane highway. They say the only way to alleviate these issues is to expand Highway 12 to four lanes. “Expansion of Highway 12 has been in the books since 1967 and a priority of GWC for years,” President/

CEO Jeffery Knight said in the news release. “There are safety and fatality concerns from the current two-lane highway that show the need for expansion, and the benefit to Whitewater’s industries would be great with expansion.” A case in point: UWWhitewater is the only fouryear UW college without a four-lane highway leading to it, so not only would the institution benefit, but the community as a whole. The GWC held a forum in Elkhorn in 2017 that included State Assembly Reps. Don Vruwink, Cody Horlacher and Amy Loudenbeck — who were re-elected last November — as well as Todd Berry, president of the Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance, and Michael Hahn, executive director of SEWRPC. The group also developed a petition to achieve a full environmental impact study (EIS), the first steps of a four-lane highway. The petition received 1,199 signatures in support. So, the goal is simple: Keep pushing for the completion of the EIS and get a four-lane highway. Greene said the need is there and there are other things she would like to do besides medical appointments such as seeing shows and attending events at the University of WisconsinWhitewater. “I am better off than other people. I have people who

She said she has lived in her home in the country since 1985 and would like to continue to live there. “I see this as a need especially for people who want to stay in the community. I pay taxes. I don’t now what the funding requires, but this is a huge need,” she said.

very angler in the Southern Lakes area enjoys myriad options for filling their stringers, whether it’s chasing largemouth bass on Blue Spring Lake near Palmyra or northern pike on Browns Lake in Burlington. Fishing enthusiasts also can visit Lauderdale Lakes, Lake Beulah near East Troy or pretty much anywhere across the region to catch a meal of bluegills, crappies or perch. But while it’s open season for panfish year-round in the Badger State, the official opening day for game fish on most inland Wisconsin waters was earlier this month. So the fishing frenzy began. One person who treats every occasion to get in his boat like it’s Christmas morning is Dave Duwe, who has been a fishing guide in the area for 27 years. However, he stresses fun and family over business considerations on opening weekend. “I could have booked the entire weekend, but I like to take the kids out and get away from the busier areas,” he said. That means avoiding Delavan and Geneva lakes, the largest and busiest fisheries in Walworth County. Instead, he went searching for largemouth bass on Como Lake and northern on Whitewater Lake that weekend. “I prefer some of Walworth County’s shallower lakes for opening day,” Duwe said. “They tend to have much higher water temperatures and that helps keep the fish more active. The smaller lakes also receive a lot less fishing pressure and can be very productive.” He recommends working the shallow, emerging weeds in 3 to 5 feet of water for bucketmouths — largemouth bass. “Being such shallow lakes, the weed growth can be tremendous, so early May can be the best fishing of the year on these bodies of water,” Duwe said of Como, which has a maximum depth of 9 feet, and Whitewater (20 feet).

Whitewater youth bond after being born with severe heart disorders BY Todd Mishler COPY EDITOR

ach Tomomitsu and Hunter Peters took golfing lessons together for two years and have participated with the Minneiska Water Ski Show Team most of their lives. However, the Whitewater buddies share a much more tangible bond. Both of them have undergone multiple openheart surgeries — by the same surgeon — and continue to take daily medications and endure regular checkups and stress tests. The Whitewater High School students — Zach is a 14-year-old freshman and Hunter a 16-year-old sophomore — are patients of the Herma Heart Institute at Children’s Hospital in Milwaukee. That’s because they were born with hypoplastic heart syndrome, a defect that affected the left side of Zach’s heart and the right half of Hunter’s. But unless one knows the details of their ordeals, they likely wouldn’t notice anything different about these friends who love water skiing and other recreational activities. “Through the excellent care and treatment of the institute, these boys are living full and active lives despite their heart abnormalities,” Tammy Tomomitsu said. Zach is a prime example, running cross country and participating in FFA among his many activities, which also include playing video games, riding gokarts and eating pizza. Still, the echocardiograms and blood draws provide a reminder of what he, his friend and their families have gone through and never lose sight of. “Hunter and I are friends because our moms started to hang out a whole bunch when they realized that Hunter and I had

pretty much the same heart defect, just opposite sides,” Zach said. “We have different cardiologists that we see for checkups, but they all know each other. I like that Hunter has to do the same things I do; sometimes he even has to do them first because he is older.” And the fact that Hunter knows exactly what trials and tribulations Zach has faced, the latter knows he can confide in the former when times get tough. “I like to talk to him because no one else that I know has to do that stuff, and it’s not always fun,” Zach said. “The doctors and nurses are pretty cool, though. I think our moms like to talk about it, too. I know my mom calls Hunter’s mom a lot about my heart stuff. “The biggest thing with my heart is I get tired a little faster than everyone else, and I get cold easier,” Zach added. “Sometimes Mom doesn’t want me to ski if the water or air is too cold because I can turn pretty blue and it takes

forever to warm up with my circulatory system not as good as others. But it’s great to have the support of family, friends and teachers that help me.” Hunter’s mother, Shawnda, agreed wholeheartedly when it comes to her son, who was diagnosed when she was about 6 months pregnant. “When I found out about Hunter’s condition, it was very hard, and my mother’s words to me, ones I would never forget, were that God only gives you what you can handle, and she said he knows you can handle a special child like Hunter,” Shawnda said. “Our family was amazingly supportive and still is to this day. During Hunter’s second surgery, his sister, Halee, was 1 year old and I had all my family taking care of her, giving me a break at the hospital. I never had to worry (because) they were there for anything we needed.” Those travails have not stopped Hunter, who enjoys snowmobiling and riding his dirt bike. He started water skiing at age 5, although his mom says he was on the team before he was born. “My husband and I have skied for over 25 years with the team,” Shawnda said. “When I was 9 months pregnant, I was the ski team show director. Our whole family skis; it is a wonderful family activity. Hunter is an amazing, strong skier. My husband and I have not held him back from anything he wants to try. “He gets worn out a lot faster then other kids and may not be able to stay caught up, but he gives it his

all,” Shawnda added. “He has tried all sports he wanted to try and we are proud of him for that.” Shawnda said water skiing provides more than a recreational pastime for Hunter. “Mentally, I feel it is his out,” she said. “It’s a second family and friends that have each other’s backs if needed. I think Hunter can be himself with no peer pressure. “Hunter is a hard worker in and out of school,” she added. “He is a very sensitive, special child. He cares about people and tells me he loves me every day and night.” And Shawnda said that having a comrade in arms like Zach helps Hunter, and vice versa. “Zach and Hunter have a special bond,” she said. “They get each other and get things that other friends would not get. They can be themselves around each other with no pressure. They are both special boys.” And the two families have joined Minneiska team members to raise funds for the Herma Heart Institute. One of the team’s latest efforts — it does fundraisers for different organizations every year —

occurred Aug. 18 when the ski team presented a check for $1,503 from a benefit show that included monies from raffle baskets and T-shirt and bucket sales. But their philanthropic efforts and the Herma Heart Institute don’t only help Zach and Hunter. Three other younger Whitewater boys suffer from heart-related maladies and complications: Andrey Scherr, Jack Hartman and James Foucault. Last fall, the Whitewater High School football team made Scherr an honorary captain for the game against McFarland and gave him an autographed football. The Whippets also chose to make another donation to the 11th annual Jack Hartmann Open, which raises money for the Herma Heart Center and raises awareness — about 40,000 babies are born with heart defects each year in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Texas man’s ‘Heart for America’ bicycle ride travels through area BY Heather EDITOR

an effort to help heal some of the division in the United States, a man from Texas recently wrapped up a 3-month, 4,250-mile solo bicycle ride through the heartland, including Walworth County. “America is a beautiful country, filled with diverse landscapes and people. Sometimes it is difficult to see that beauty because of all the political arguing and distractions,” Kirk Gillock, 48, said prior to leaving Texas last August. After spending 14 years in Thailand – first volunteering as an English teacher and then founding a charity and opening a school – Gillock returned home last year. “It was sad to see how much division there was. I really wanted to reconnect with my own country, go around and meet fellow Americans and spread some love,” he said in a phone interview while on his ride. Gillock said he had done a similar thing in Thailand of following a route that makes a heart, but it was on a motorcycle to raise money for helmets. Later, he followed another heart path and picked up trash. When he returned to the U.S., he decided to do the same, but on a bigger scale with the timing to finish before the midterm elections.

“I decided to start in Texas, where I’m from, and from there it was just creating as big of a heart as possible through the heartland,” he said. Gillock said his mother always has been supportive, “with unconditional love, but my dad was more like, ‘Why don’t you get a job?’ Eventually he understood why I wanted to do it and has been supportive. He was a marketing guy so has been helping me connect with people. They’ve both been great,” he said. Along the way, Gillock traveled nearly every type of road imaginable and cycled through several states, including New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, South Dakota, Nebraska, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Missouri and Arkansas. By the end of the trip, he traveled through 13 states. While in Wisconsin, Gillock left Madison and was en route to Chicago when there was an unexpected stop in Walworth County. “I was pulled over by a policeman in Elkhorn, a very nice guy. I had been on Highway 12 for a long time and it was a two-lane road but then turned into a four-lane road. He stopped me and told me I couldn’t ride on the four-lane road but gave me great advice about which route to take, and it was a great ride from there into Lake Geneva,” Gillock said.

Considering the number of miles traveled, he said there were only a few issues where he wasn’t able to take the route he had planned. And he said 99 percent of the drivers that passed him were friendly and considerate while he was riding. “I only ran into two or three that were a little aggressive. That was one of my big concerns – am I going to get hit by a car? – but everyone was nice for the most part,” he said.

Safe travels

This was a solo ride for Gillock, and while he expected there to be some solitude, he was surprised a few times – while traveling through Wyoming, for instance, when he never came in contact with another person. “You get lonely out there and sometimes you talk to yourself. But I met some of the nicest people along the way. That’s what I really wanted to see. There are a lot of good people out there who just want to be happy and don’t want the bickering going on. I met people on both sides, including some Republicans and Democrats working together. It was great to see,” Gillock said. He also had to deal with a variety of weather conditions. It was summer and hot in Texas when he took off on his journey, but when he was back in Texas just a couple hundred miles from completing the trek, he said it was quite cold. He traveled lightly, with a saddlebag – one side red, the other blue, and paid for the trip entirely out of his own pocket. “It was self-supported and a solo ride. I also removed all the logos from everything – the bike, the GPS, the GoPro cameras and so on, as I had no sponsors and bought all the equipment myself,” he said. Most nights Gillock found an inexpensive hotel to stay in, but other nights, depending on where he was, he used his tent. He said he listened to music, podcasts and audiobooks at times but also turned it off and listened to the “wind and the cows and the birds and the large trucks flying by me.” During the phone call, when Gillock had roughly 200 miles remaining, he said he had not experienced any mechanical issues. “Not a single flat tire and have had the same tires, chain, gears the entire time. Message shared While on the bike tour, Gillock said he heard from a lot of people that there seems to be anger and finger-pointing rather than listening. “Both sides do have good ideas, we just need to work together. I don’t know if it’s always been like that and we haven’t been aware of it, or if it’s gotten worse. But it’s there now and the people I talked to know it needs to change,” he said. Which brought him back to the reason for the bike ride. “Balance is key – that was the idea with the bicycle. If you lean one way, you fall over and if you lean the other way the same thing happens. Everyone I’ve met and talked to really liked the idea, and it takes a lot to get peoples’ attention these days,” Gillock said. Gillock is no stranger to coming up with extreme ideas to get a message across. “While in Thailand teaching English, I noticed there was a big problem with road safety – every day people, including my students, were being killed on motorcycles. I realized I could make a bigger impact, started giving out helmets and gave out over 5,000 of them,” he said. He started a charity and opened a school that taught English as well as computers and environmental issues. Word spread and volunteers from around the world came and helped at the school. Gillock said he also built two large plastic bottle boats as a way to get people’s attention about trash and sailed one of them down the Mekong River, roughly 600 miles. When his campaign was done, Gillock said 70 percent of the motorcycle riders were wearing helmets and the students were learning English in the local schools, so it was time to close the charity and return home. What’s next for Gillock is still up in the air. “That’s the million dollar question. I’ve actually been working and living in Washington state but might move back to Texas to be closer to my family. I might also write a book – a lot of people along the way on this bike ride have told me I should, so we’ll see,” he said. Market continues to tighten Housing sales down 7.4 percent statewide in first quarter

With Walworth and Kenosha counties bucking the trend, existing home sales statewide fell sharply in March, and declining inventories put more pressure on home prices, according to the most recent examination of the state housing market by the Wisconsin Realtors Association. Home sales fell 14.1 percent in March 2019 compared to that same month last year, and median prices were up 6.3 percent to $185,000 over that same period. The first quarter picture was similar but a bit brighter, with first quarter home sales down 7.4 percent, relative the

first quarter of 2018, and the quarterly median price up 5.5 percent to $179,300 over the past year. In the eight-county Southeast Wisconsin region, home sales were down 7.1 percent for the first quarter of 2019 compared to the same period in 2018 and median prices were up 7.4 percent. The Southern Lakes area saw sales increase 1.5 percent for the first quarter (compared to 2018) in Kenosha County, while declining in both Racine (-7 percent) and Walworth (-4.8 percent) counties. Median prices for the first quarter (compared to the same period in 2018)

were up in Kenosha County (11 percent) and in Racine County (5.1 percent), but declined in Walworth County (-3 percent). “The economy is in good shape, and that puts a lot of pressure on a housing market with limited supply,” said WRA Chairman Jean Stefaniak. In fact, the Wisconsin unemployment rate has ranged between 2.9 percent and 3.1 percent over the last 12 months, and the most recent estimate for February is at the low end of that range. In addition, while job growth is not as robust as it has been the last couple of years, there were still 11,400

nonfarm jobs created over the 12 months ending in February 2019. “The bitter temperatures and heavy snowfall likely slowed buyer traffic in January and February, which contributed to fewer closed sales in March,” Stefaniak said, but she blamed most of the slowdown on the sparse supply of homes for sale, not the weather-related reduction in demand. “Realtors can’t sell properties that aren’t on the market, and the available supply continues to be very tight,” she said. In fact, there were just 3.8 months of supply in March, which is down from 4.3 months a year earlier. Metropolitan counties, which include Wisconsin’s larger cities, had just 3.2 months of supply in March, whereas micropolitan counties, which include towns and smaller cities, had 4.4 months of supply. “The housing market has tightened up everywhere, but it’s really tight in the urban communities,” said Stefaniak. Only the less populated rural counties had a balanced market, at 6.4 months of available housing supply.

“With this level of price pressure, we would expect to see a significant erosion in housing affordability,” said WRA President and CEO Michael Theo, but he noted there have been mitigating factors. “Luckily a slight reduction in mortgage rates, combined with moderate growth in family income, has helped keep Wisconsin housing relatively affordable.” The Wisconsin Affordability Index measures the portion of the medianpriced home that a buyer with median family income can afford to buy, assuming a healthy 20 percent down payment and a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage on the remaining balance. The index fell from 214 in March 2018 to 203 in March 2019.

“The index still shows that a typical buyer is qualified to purchase more than twice the median-priced home, which is remarkable given how much housing prices have appreciated over the past seven years,” said Theo. Median prices began rising in spring 2012, after a significant slide resulting from the Great Recession. Since March 2012, the median price has increased by slightly more than 50 percent. “Although housing is less affordable today than in 2012, there are still good deals to be had in today’s market,” said Theo. “Sellers definitely have the advantage in this market, so moving quickly is critical when your realtor finds the right home for your needs.”

Kettle Moraine Land Trust hires new director

The nonprofit Kettle Moraine Land Trust recently named Gregory Rajsky as its new executive director, succeeding Maggie Zoellner who is retiring from the position she’s held since 2015. Rajsky brings more than 20 years of experience in nonprofit management to the lead staff position along with a solid background in land stewardship and ecological restoration. He previously served as the Director of Ecological and Volunteer Gregory Rajsky Services with Conserve Lake County, an Illinois land trust. Most recently, he was the naturalist/educator at Severson Dells Nature Center near Rockford, Ill. His prior experience as chief staff executive of nonprofit organizations include serving as president of the Aluminum Anodizers Council, and executive director of the Extrusion Technology for Aluminum Profiles Foundation. “Greg’s commitment to conservation, together with his leadership experience, have him well prepared to guide Kettle Moraine Land Trust going forward,” board president Dave DeAngelis said. “All of us on the Board of Directors look forward to working with Greg to increase community engagement and conserve more land in the years to come,” DeAngelis added. Rajsky also serves in a volunteer capacity as vice chairman on the board of directors of Friends of Hackmatack National Wildlife Refuge, which straddles the state line, occupying portions of Walworth County and McHenry County (Ill.) Additionally, he retains a seat on the board of Small Waters Education NFP, based in Alden, Ill. The Kettle Moraine Land Trust, originally established in 2000 as the Lauderdale Lakes Conservancy, preserves the natural heritage of Walworth County and its environs through the collaborative efforts in land conservancy, resource management and environmental stewardship. The Trust owns four nature preserves, holds conservation easements on a number of additional properties, and assists Walworth County Parks and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources with the management of publicly held natural areas. Several community events are held by the Trust each year. Volunteers and members help improve wildlife habitat and native ecosystems by working with local landowners and in partnership with organizations and municipalities.
