Members of the Lauderdale-La Grange Fire and Rescue Department are honored on Feb. 25 at the annual Firefighter and EMT Appreciation Day at the La Grange United Methodist Church. How it began In March 2011, Nick Van Dyke helped organize the first Shamrock Shuffle (which was sponsored by his employer, Lauderdale Landing) because it combined two of his favorite activities: St. Patrick’s Day and distance running. The owners of Lauderdale Landing, Marty and Mike Healy, decided to honor his memory by incorporating Nick’s name in the event the following year and designating the money raised for a scholarship, awarded to a graduating senior, from Nick’s alma mater Elkhorn Area High School, whose post-secondary educational goals involve a career in the automotive field. The event has grown each year in numbers and thanks to the generosity of event sponsors, donors and participants, the organizing committee has been able to expand the focus to include “Spread the Love” recipients. Participants choose a 2-, 3-, or 5-mile course along Westshore Drive, along the Lauderdale Lakes shoreline. he University of Chicago recently announced plans to wind down its activities at Yerkes Observatory in Williams Bay over the next several months and to formally cease on-site operations by Oct. 1. The upcoming summer season will therefore be the final season of University activities at Yerkes, according to a press release. The University stated it’s announcing the plans well in advance in order to engage with Yerkes staff and nearby communities, including the Village of Williams Bay, in considering long-term plans for the property. Despite its important history, the Yerkes facility and its instrumentation no longer contribute directly to the research mission of the University of Chicago, which has made major investments in the Magellan and Giant Magellan telescopes in Chile, the release states. Yerkes has continued to make important contributions through its education and outreach programs, and that work, which remains important to the University, will now relocate to the Hyde Park campus. “Science at Yerkes in the 20th century led to key discoveries and advances in the field of astronomy, when the observatory helped build the foundation for modern astrophysics,” said Edward (Rocky) Kolb, dean of the Division of the Physical Sciences and a professor in the Department of Astronomy & Astrophysics. “It is an important part of the history of the University, and we hope it will become, in some form, a valuable

resource to the surrounding community and visitors to the Lake Geneva area,” Kolb added. The observatory was established by the University in 1897 and has been the home of groundbreaking work by scientists such as George Ellery Hale, Edwin Hubble and Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar. The facility was the home of UChicago’s Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics from the time it opened until it began relocating to Hyde Park in the 1960s. In recent decades, the University’s research in observational astronomy has shifted to using facilities located all over the globe and in space. The University and staff at Yerkes will honor existing commitments for events at the facility scheduled before Oct. 1, and will accept new bookings on a case-by-case basis. “Unfortunately, operating Yerkes no longer makes sense for the University from a programmatic or cost standpoint. Drawing to a close our operations there is the first step in a collaborative process to determine the ultimate disposition of the buildings and property,” said David Fithian, executive vice president of the University. “We currently have no specific plans nor have we approached any potential buyers,” Fithian said. Derek Douglas, vice president for civic engagement and external affairs, were expected to represent the University in discussing options with the leadership of Williams Bay and its residents beginning in March, according to the release.

Area drive-ins offer carhops, traditional food favorites of a bygone era BY

It is located at 3131 Main St. in East Troy. When Gus and Jessica Athanasopoulos bought it 16 years ago, the restaurant was an old A&W that had been closed for some time. “We liked the location and looked forward to bringing back the retro vibes of the restaurant,” Jessica Athanasopoulos said. “We kept the flavor of the restaurant by retaining the old-time look.” The restaurant is all about classics. It starts with their décor, which takes one into the 1950s with the black and white tiled floor that carries to and up the wall behind the service counter. Red and white booths and tables fill the room. Walls are bright and multicolored with gasoline signs from Texaco, Union 76 and Mobilgas, along with photos of cars, cars and more cars. That theme also dominates outside, where classic cars, trucks and motorcycles fill the parking lot Saturday nights. The autos mostly come from Minnesota, Illinois and Wisconsin. “We usually have 200 to 400 cars here for the car shows,” Jessica said. The classic theme continues with the food. Everything is made to order and fresh; hamburgers are never frozen. Specialty burgers have names such as the Heavy Chevy

emember when going out for a hamburger meant heading to your favorite drive-in, one where carhops took the orders and brought food directly to your vehicle? Drive-ins were family favorites, but they mostly were gathering places for young adults and teenagers — for those with a driver’s license and an automobile at their disposal — on weekend nights to enjoy a burger, fries and a root beer. At most drive-ins in the 1960s and ’70s, drink choices were root beer and orange soda or a malt; no Cokes on the menu. Drive-ins also were about socializing with friends. But for many, it was all about showing off of their autos, especially the hot rods popular with young men, many who had customized them to be as loud as possible. And no drive-in was complete without the sounds of rock ’n’ roll music reverberating from their car radios. A&W and Dog n Suds were two popular chains. Roy Allen founded A&W in 1919 as a walkup root beer stand in Lodi, Calif. In 1922, he partnered with employee Frank Wright to open the first A&W restaurant in Sacramento, Calif. They became famous for their root beer served in a frosted mug — at a cost of 5 cents. The chain expanded in 1926 with franchises spread throughout the country. Dog n Suds was founded in Champaign, Ill., in 1953 by two University of Illinois music teachers. Their specialties were hot dogs and root beer. Their growth was phenomenal, and by the mid-70s the company could claim over 600 restaurants in 38 states and Canada. Dog n Suds also used carhops — usually teenage girls, who often attracted young men from the area. While many of these restaurants have closed and been replaced by fast-food places such as McDonald’s and Burger King, drive-in style restaurants in the Geneva Lakes area continue to share that old-time spirit. Here are a few favorites for those looking to enjoy a step back into the time of “Happy Days.”

Friday fish fries feature cod freshly battered. And, of course, there is frozen custard, which is made in-house daily using milk from a local farm and 100 percent pure vanilla. Elkhorn also has a classic drive-in at 645 N. Lincoln St., which is housed in a building that has been around for over 50 years. Jeff Halpin has owned Annie’s for the past 25 years and said the restaurant was built as a Dog n Suds. “Root beer has been produced in this building for the past 50 years and continues to be made here today,” he said. Annie’s prides itself on its freshly made foods from scratch. “We use the highest-grade meats, which are delivered twice a week,” Halpin said. “Our onion rings, coleslaw and ranch dressing are made in-house. Our menu contains a wide variety of typical drive-in foods such as the traditional burgers, hot dogs and our root beer floats are made with our own homemade root beer.” “We are able to provide gluten-free and vegetarian meals as needed,” he said. “We do our best to provide whatever you need as long as we have the ingredients.” While its menu has grown to include salads, wraps and a variety of other great foods, what do you really want? Annie’s offers good service, hamburgers, hot dogs, the special homemade root beer and that oldtime, drive-in vibe. And when warmer weather arrives,

carhops serve customers in their vehicles or at the picnic tables. While there is seating indoors, it is limited. “We keep the building in a time warp to keep the feeling of the early days of drive-ins when they were the favorite place to go.” In summertime, drive-ins are not complete without an auto show, and Annie’s plans to hold a couple of events this summer — Jeep shows are on Fridays. And with Annie’s celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, area residents are asked to watch the website for upcoming special events (anniesburgertown.com) or visit its Facebook page. The restaurant is open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sundays through Thursdays and 11 to 9 on Fridays and Saturdays.

Meggy Moo’s

Meggy Moo’s Dairy Ripple is located at 600 Kenosha St. in Walworth. Danielle Svanstrom worked at Meggy Moo’s for 10 years before buying the business three years ago. “Around 1954 the restaurant became a stop for ice cream called Dairy Ripple,” Svanstrom said. “In later years, the name was changed to Meggy Moo’s Dairy Ripple.” Meggy Moo’s serves a full line of the tasty specials that bring everyone in for that nostalgic trip. It focuses on hamburgers, Chicago-style hot dogs, Italian beef, Philly steaks and gyros. And don’t forget the french fries. Meggy Moo’s offers a specialty not found at most drive-in restaurants, drawing customers in with widgets – doughnut balls freshly made, rolled in sugar and served piping hot. They are sold in packages of 10 and are a tasty treat before, with or after your sandwich and ice cream. Visitors can’t visit Meggy Moo’s without trying some of its famous ice cream, whether traditional and scooped by hand or soft serve that most people associate with drive-ins. Lopez’s Anchor Inn

The place in Delavan to find that drive-in ambiance, but with a slightly different flair, is Lopez’s Anchor Inn, 1325 Racine St. It opened in 1980. It serves traditional hamburgers, hot dogs and french fries. Hamburgers are made using local beef from Sorgs, known for its high quality. Lopez’s also serves a variety of freshly made Mexican favorites, including taco salads, fajitas, quesadillas and nachos. Try their eggplant fries for a unique taste treat. Daily specials vary from double cheeseburgers, foot-long hot dogs and gyros to fresh taco salad. Their soft-serve ice cream is a favorite. Choose a chocolate or vanilla cone, or for those who can’t make up their mind, the chocolate and vanilla swirl is the best choice. Lopez’s is a walk-up place with no indoor eating spaces. Dog n Suds

Just south of the state line, Dog n Suds is located on U.S. Highway12 in Richmond, Ill. It opened in 1963 and, although it has had a number of owners, has operated continuously since then. It is easily spotted with its distinctive red and yellow signs and mascot Rover displayed carrying the food. In reality, carhops take orders and deliver the food. Dog n Suds also is known for hot dogs and hamburgers, but with a special twist. The foot-long Coney dog and its Texas Burger are big sellers. The latter is the Tuesday special and sells for $3.50. Kids’ favorites such as chicken tenders, corn dogs and hamburgers are served with a choice of tater tots or fries and a drink. The entire meal is special because it is served in a classic car package that sometimes is more enticing than eating the food. Dog n Suds is known for its frosty root beer. The best way to drink it is in a frosty mug, unless you prefer a float. The drive-in also serves 30 flavors of shakes, malts and sundaes. How many can you handle? Gage offers tips for getting boats back on the water BY Heather Ruenz STAFF WRITER

he top priority in preparation for a safe boating season this spring and summer is preventative maintenance, according to service staff at Gage Marine. “Preventative maintenance is No. 1, such as oil changes, engine tune-ups, servicing the drive and changing the impeller if needed. The impeller cools the engine when it’s running,” said Matt Oglesby, marine services manager at Gage Marine. In the spring, in addition to maintenance Oglesby said activating a boat – after it’s been winterized – is necessary to get it ready for boating season. “One thing we do with every boat after maintenance and activation is a lake test with a certified technician to make sure everything is operating as it should and is safe,” Oglesby said. The lake test consists of watching for water leaks on the engine and hoses, he said. Included in the activation is checking all the 12-volt accessories such as navigation lights, the horn, the bilge pump and bilge blower. “It’s all about people being safe on the water,” Oglesby said.

Though not essential to a boat operating properly, he said taking care of cosmetic issues not only makes the boat look better but can make it last longer. “People can wax it, shampoo the carpets and use a vinyl cleaner for the inside,” Oglesby said. “The lakes in this area also leave water spots, and white vinegar is good for removing those.” Boats that have bottom paint and stay in the water also need to be painted periodically, he said, because that protects the hull and deteriorates over time. Gage Marine also stores and maintains sailboats, with much of the work similar to what’s done on powerboats, said Jim Molick, assistant service manager. “Where it’s different is the masts have to be put up and the sails put on,” Molick said. “We do that on the lakefront and will put in new sails and new lines and make sure everything is secure.” Molick said some customers take care of those things themselves, but Gage handles almost all of the rigging. The service staff at Gage Marine is willing to teach customers how to take care of maintenance tasks on their boats, and Oglesby said September is a good time of year for that.

Service plans offered In addition to what Oglesby referred to as “a la carte” maintenance – smaller jobs, as needed – Gage Marine offers two maintenance plans: One includes the mechanical maintenance and the second also includes cosmetic maintenance. Gage also services boat trailers, including inspecting the brakes and bearings, lights, bunks or rollers, and the hitch and latch. “Those things are important, not only legally like the tail and brake lights, but also for safety reasons,” Oglesby said. The canvas cover is another key item in keeping the boat in good shape, he said. “It keeps the water out of the boat and helps prevent mold and mildew while keeping the sun off the upholstery,” Oglesby said. “A boat canvas will usually last about six to 10 years, depending on the color of the canvas and where the boat is located. But if it’s outside all year, a canvas might only last a few years.” Staff at Gage Marine will make service calls to boaters on the water or at their personal dock if need be. “We’ll go out and help with lighter mechanical work, like changing a battery, but if it’s

Project documenting Elkhorn area history It will feature voice recordings for searchable catalog

The motive behind a new endeavor is clear: document Elkhorn history through the voices of local people and create what will eventually be a searchable database. Spearheaded by Chad Robinson, adult services librarian at Matheson Memorial Library, and Pat Blackmer, of the Walworth County Historical Society, the duo had its first interview with local historian Frank Eames a few weeks ago. “We started with Frank. Just think about how much he knows about Elkhorn history. It’s amazing,” Robinson said. Referred to as the oral history project, Robinson said one of the jobs of a library is to collect history and often, they team up with a local historical society. The equipment being used – two microphones and a digital audio recorder – is very high quality and as such, sensitive so that it clearly records every word said. “We use broad questions but not traditional interviews. It’s more to get the subject talking,” Robinson said. “The first question will be the same for everyone – what is your earliest memory of Elkhorn?” Blackmer added. The duo is targeting people of a certain age group, many recommended by the historical society. Following Eames’ interview, the next person on deck was Bill Liner who is from Tennessee but moved to Elkhorn in the 1950s, was a local bartender at The Jury Room. In an effort to use the quietest location possible, the recordings are being done at the Doris Reinke Resource Center. Speaking of Reinke, she’s someone Robinson and Blackmer said they wish they could have recorded before she died. “It would’ve been nice to record her telling stories about what life was like in the Elkhorn

community,” Robinson said. “She knew so many people and so much about this area,” Blackmer said. There will not be any editing other than to splice the recordings together if more than one is needed for any of the guests. There is a request for people with stories about local history to come forward if they’re willing to be recorded. “From the county fair to people who held an office, lawyers, judges and school teachers, the list of possibilities is endless. We are looking for volunteers and are leaning toward recording the earliest history first, if possible,” Robinson said. “And we hope to record an equal amount of men and women, “ Blackmer added. They also said nothing is trivial and are interested in hearing stories about sports, agriculture and farming, criminal history, fires and even local family stories worth sharing. Participants are required to sign a legal release form basically stating the recording is for public use. Once five or so interviews are completed, Robinson said he will begin uploading and cataloging them with hopes of having the first batch of recordings available to the public early this summer at the library. “I also hope to catalog information by topic and date ranges to help narrow down subjects of interest,” Robinson said. Robinson and Blackmer said the project is important. “We feel strongly it’s an important project, we have the perfect partner with the historical society and it’s good use of the library’s time,” Robinson said. Man found guilty of lesser charge in reckless homicide case Owner of gun used to kill man faces up to 10 years in prison BY Vicky Wedig STAFF WRITER

An East Troy man was found guilty of a crime but a lesser offense than reckless homicide in the death of a man at his apartment in January 2017. During a three-day jury trial that ended April 26, Tyler Odell, 23, was found guilty of homicide by negligent handling of a dangerous weapon in the death of David Bauspies on Jan. 2, 2017. He faces up to 10 years in prison and $10,000 in fines and is scheduled for sentencing

June 29. He was tried on a charge of first-degree reckless homicide, which carries a maximum sentence of 60 years in prison. In an interview with police, Odell said Bauspies and Robert Sterling, 32, of McHenry, Ill., were with him in his Emery Court apartment and Odell “decided to show everyone his gun,” according to the criminal complaint. Odell said Bauspies and Sterling had “both been drinking a lot of beer and were pretty drunk” when Odell took

Sentencing delayed for woman charged in meth cook at hotel Victims in case weren’t notified of hearing BY Vicky Wedig STAFF WRITER

A sentencing hearing was delayed for a Lake Geneva woman, who was burned while allegedly cooking methamphetamine, after a judge learned victims in the case had not been notified of the hearing. Melissa E. Kuen, 37, pleaded guilty Feb. 26 to manufacturing or delivering methamphetamine. Charges of knowingly possessing meth waste and possession of drug paraphernalia against her were dismissed. She faces up to 12 ½ years in prison and $25,000 in fines. She and five people who planned to speak on her behalf appeared in court Friday for a sentencing hearing, but the proceeding was rescheduled after Judge Kristine Drettwan learned victims were not notified. Kuen is now scheduled to be sentenced June 29. According to the criminal complaint, police were called to the Cove for a fire in Room 314 at about 3:15 a.m. Jan. 9, 2017. In the room, police encountered

Patrick McBean, who had burns to his hands and his facial hair appeared to have been burned off, according to the complaint. Smoke inside the room was very thick and had a chemical odor that the officer reported burned his lungs and mouth as he breathed, according to the complaint. A pot with water was boiling on the stove in the room with a box of cough medicine floating in it, and the bathroom had burn marks on the walls and charred debris throughout including the partially filled tub, according to the complaint. Police believe the fire occurred in the bathroom near the toilet and reported seeing burnt pieces of clothing and blood on the carpet throughout the room, according to the complaint. McBean told police a woman was cooking food in the room, burned it and then left, according to the complaint. At the same time police were responding to the situation at the Cove, emergency services were called to the nearby Mill Creek Motel for a woman there who was badly burned and was taken to Froedtert Hospital, according to the complaint. The burned woman was Kuen who is believed to have left the Cove and walked toward the Mill Creek Hotel calling for help after operating a meth cook at the Cove that exploded and burned her.

out a .44 Magnum revolver that he owns. Odell told police another man, Richard D. Pryor, arrived at the apartment while Odell was showing off the gun. According to the complaint, Odell told police he removed the six rounds in the gun and showed it to everyone. Then Odell told police he put one round back in the gun and spun the cylinder and that Sterling saw him do this. Odell told police he held the gun up to his own head but did not pull the trigger. According to the compliant, Odell then handed the gun to Sterling. Sterling “spun the cylinder” and held the gun up to his own head and “pulled the trigger,” the complaint states. The gun did not go off, Odell told police. According to the complaint, Odell told police Sterling then pointed the gun at Bauspies and “pulled the trigger, causing the gun to fire.” Police, medical examiner’s staff and Sterling testified during the three-day trial last week. Odell did not take the stand. East Troy police officer Jeff Price testified that initially, when speaking to

Price at the scene, Sterling said Odell fired the shot that killed Bauspies. Later that day, in an interview at the Walworth County Sheriff’s Office, Sterling said the gun just went off as he set it on his knee, Price said. Price said in the sequence of the men pulling the trigger on the gun, Sterling described eight trigger pulls before Bauspies was shot, but the revolver holds only six rounds. Sterling told Price the men believed the gun was not loaded. Odell’s defense attorney, Stephen Govin, played the portion of the videotaped interview for the jury when Sterling described that belief. “We all saw the f---ing bullets all sitting right there,” Sterling said on the recording, referring to the gun case sitting near the TV in Odell’s apartment. Govin also played a portion of the video for the jury that showed Sterling saying the men were “being macho guys” and “crazy mother f---ers” and a “couple of guys with our balls pumped the f--- up.” Sterling also said in the interview that Pryor, who

was questioned but not charged in connection with Bauspies’ death, handed him the gun. On the last day of the trial, Govin also recalled officer Aaron Hackett, who previously testified for the prosecution. Govin directed Hackett to remove the gun that was used in the crime from the evidence box and attempt to spin the cylinder while it was in the body of the gun. Hackett demonstrated the cylinder did not spin unless it was moved out of the body of the revolver. He also testified that the chambers were visible and one could see whether they contained any rounds when the cylinder was in the position outside the barrel where it could be spun. But real estate vets are optimistic market will even out for buyers

he Wisconsin Realtors Association’s existing home sales market for March showed that year-over-year inventories compared to 2017 were down 17.1 percent across the Badger State, while prices rose 7 percent over that same period. So, just how long will that strong seller’s market last? One guy in the real estate business who’s extremely optimistic about the economy in general and that the market will even out for homebuyers

is Joe Busch, and he has history on his side. “If you look at the (WRA) graphs, year after year January typically sees the lowest inventory and May the highest,” said Busch, whose 23 years of experience includes owning Bear Realty in Burlington since 2007. “I know some people are worrying, but all overall indicators look strong,” he added. “Interest rates are still below 5 percent, and when they’re low and inventories are low, prices go up. It’s not a bad market, just a different market.” Busch said the real estate market is healthy and started

its upward trend in late 2012 or early 2013, and he sees encouraging signs. “I know we’ve had inventory shortages, but we feel it’s getting better, especially in our market, and that’s promising for the future,” Busch said. “I believe we’ll see the market even out between sellers and buyers later this year. “Things are starting to speed up, at least in the greater Burlington and southeastern Wisconsin areas,” Busch added. “We put eight properties on the market this (past) week, and that’s a good sign that the inventory is coming.”

The WRA’s report showed a mixed bag in the tri-county region from March 2017 to March 2018. Racine County led the way with sales up 12 percent and the median price up 17 percent to $162,550. In Walworth County, sales were up 3.4 percent and prices were down 6.5 percent to $189,250.

While in Kenosha County, sales were down 12.5 percent but the median price was up 5.2 percent to $163,900. Two other veteran Realtors, Bob Rauland of Rauland Realty in Walworth and Tom Keefe of Keefe Real Estate in Lake Geneva, agreed that available homes are going fast and prospective buyers
