Plane crashes into trees near Lauderdale Lakes The occupants were rescued with no reports of injuries

unique rescue took place recently after a small plane crashed into treetops near Lauderdale Lakes. The three occupants who were inside the plane, hung from high among the trees for hours until they could safely be lowered to the ground. The Whitewater Fire Department was dispatched to a possible plane crash – in the area of Hi-Lo Road in the Kettle Moraine Forest – shortly after 9 p.m., May 15. “Walworth County was initially alerted to the incident by Milwaukee Air Traffic Control, regarding a plane that had dropped from radar,” Whitewater Fire Department officials stated in a press release. A 911 call placed by the pilot of the aircraft allowed the Walworth County Sheriff’s Department to better determine the location of the crash near the Ice Age Trail off of County Highway P. “It took crews approximately 45 minutes to locate the crash site and make contact with the individuals

• REPORT: Contractor spent job money on trip, clubs An initial appearance is scheduled for Jan. 15 for a Lake Geneva contractor charged with taking more than $62,000 for projects in the towns of Walworth, Linn and LaGrange but failing to do the work. Shannon W. Bullis, 43, was charged Dec. 3 in Walworth County Circuit Court with two counts of theft in a business setting of more than $10,000 and theft in a business setting of $5,000 to $10,000. According to the criminal complaint, three residents in the towns of Walworth, Linn and LaGrange paid Bullis $62,421 for work to their properties, but Bullis never completed the work, and according to former employees, spent the money on personal items including a trip to Florida and at strip clubs. The Town of LaGrange resident hired Bullis’ company, Bullseye General Contracting, to repair the

roof on his home on Solid Comfort Drive in 2016 and made a down payment of $13,500 in October of that year, according to the criminal complaint. The work was never completed, and the resident learned in March 2017 that Bullis had closed to company in Wisconsin and moved it to Florida and Nebraska, according to the complaint. The Town of Walworth resident hired Bullis in May 2016 to repair roofs of his house and barn on Brick School Road and wrote checks for $2,000 and $7,926.92 that month, according to the complaint. The resident signed a second contract with Bullseye in September 2016 to repair siding to his home and wrote checks for $5,180.17 and $2,000 for that job, according to the complaint. Bullseye delivered materials to his home for the project, but they were sent cash-on-delivery, which the resident refused to pay,

according to the complaint. The materials sat there for months, and no one showed up to do the work, the complaint states. The resident eventually hired a Bullseye employee, who had since quit his job at Bullseye, to complete the job, according to the complaint. The Town of Linn resident hired Bullseye to repair three buildings on his property – a main barn, a hog house and his residence – that were damaged by a storm in 2016, according to the complaint. The resident forwarded an insurance payment for $31,815.22 to Bullis, and Bullis’ company completed the house roof and hog house but did not do the barn project, which accounted for $22,922.57 of the insurance funds that were issued, according to the complaint. The former employee who completed the Town of Walworth project said Bullis had difficulty getting crews to complete jobs

because paychecks started bouncing and every Friday was “a rush to get to the bank to make sure you got paid before funds ran out,” according to the complaint. He said employees would go weeks without pay, and Bullis used payment from projects for things like $4,000 to put his name on a racecar, a trip to Florida and patronizing strip clubs, according to the complaint. He said Bullis would sell new jobs and use those down payments to complete previous jobs in a “mini-pyramid scheme” arrangement, according to the complaint. He said as many as 23 to 30 customers were calling wanting their job finished, no one would call them back and no money was available to complete the jobs, the complaint states. The company “closed its doors” in late 2016 and Bullis “took the money and ran,” the former employee said, according to the complaint.

Before landing in the trees, the pilot had time to deploy a parachute attached to the plane, which is what the occupants were hanging from until rescued. Mutual aid was requested from Janesville, Beloit, Elkhorn, LaGrange as well as Madison’s Heavy Urban Rescue Team. Dudek Tree Service was also requested for the experience they have in scaling trees, officials said. “Due to the plane’s location and terrain, rescuers were initially delayed in reaching the site. ATVs and rescuers on foot were utilized to ferry equipment and provide access,” the release states. The rescue effort began with an arborist climbing up and rigging a rope system attached to a harness. It took roughly five hours to safely get the three occupants from the treetops to the ground. The rescue was completed around 2 a.m. the following morning. The occupants were not injured and after being evaluated by emergency medical staff on scene “were quickly reunited with their families,” officials report. The names of the plane’s occupants have not officially been release however, the parents of one passenger thanked rescuers in a comment in response to a post on the Whitewater Fire Department’s Facebook page. “We cannot thank the Whitewater Fire Department, the Walworth County Sheriff’s Department, the members of the rescue teams and the other first responders who found the plane. You are all amazing! Our son was one of the passengers in this plane and we are so grateful that we still have him and his friends with us. May God bless you all,” Tim and Nancy Dewane commented. The FAA was investigating the incident and no official report had been released as of press time.

meet at a bowling alley not far from Duane’s farm. Along the way Tina had to stop to use the restroom and she called ahead to let Duane know she might be a bit late. But Duane was running behind, too, and was still in the barn. He suggested they meet at the farm before heading off on their date. Against her better judgment Tina agreed and set off for the farm using the directions Duane gave her. Duane admitted he was naive and didn’t realize the request could be construed as creepy. He simply reasoned it would save time to meet at the farm before leaving

together for their date. Tina said first impressions are important to her and as the daughter of a man who made his living painting barns she knew what a tidy and productive farm looked like. So when she drove up the road near the farm she thought was Duane’s and saw a ramshackle house with plastic sheeting on the windows she decided to keep driving right past. She turned around in the next driveway (leading to a neat and productive-looking farm) and just before re-entering the road to head back home she noticed the sign alongside

the driveway. It read: “Hinchley Dairy Farm” A second date leads to a lifetime Because Tina had to leave by 9 p.m. and had chosen a Mexican restaurant on the west side of Madison, time was tight. But it was enough time for the admitted “farmer hunter” and the unassuming farmer to make a connection. “He was a gentleman and didn’t try to kiss me,” Tina said. “And he asked me for another date.” On their second date Duane showed Tina around the farm and she ended up

helping him milk the herd that evening. And the rest, you could say, is history. The pair continued dating, but because of their busy lives and work schedules most of their time together was spent on the telephone. “We talked by phone every night,” Duane said. “We had serious, deep conversations.” He said it allowed them to develop a relationship based on values rather than lust. Tina visited the farm most weekends and was content with the pace of the relationship because it valued

Felon found with loaded gun in car in LaGrange An initial appearance was scheduled for May 11 for a Milton felon found with a gun in the Town of LaGrange. Tiana L. Williams, 31, was charged April 23 in Walworth County Circuit Court with possession of a firearm by a felon and possession of marijuana, both as a repeater. According to the criminal complaint, Williams was pulled over April 15 in the Town of LaGrange, and the deputy smelled marijuana coming from the car. She told police her sister had smoked a blunt in her car and they wouldn’t find

marijuana but would find something else related to what she was on probation for, according to the complaint. Williams said she knew she was going to jail and wanted to say goodbye to her child in the car, the complaint states. Police found a cigar wrapper that contained marijuana and a Ruger .380 semi-automatic handgun with a magazine inserted, according to the complaint. Williams was convicted of possession of a firearm by a felon in Rock County in 2020.

each member’s schedule. The couple maintained that pace for the better part of two years before getting married in 1997. Three years later they purchased the farm from Duane’s father and extended ownership to a third generation of Hinchleys. Through the years they’ve raised their sons from their first marriages – Curtis and Spencer – and had twin daughters, Anna and Catherine. Anna, who graduated from the University of WisconsinMadison with a degree in dairy science and a certificate in agri-business management, has joined her parents as a part-owner and is helping bring the latest farming practices to the operation. The milking parlor is now fully automated as the cows come and go on their own, stepping into robotic milking “booths,” according to Tina. The technology is “amazing,” she said, and allows farmers to monitor the operation from their mobile phones while enjoying a freedom that eluded previous generations of farmers. The farm currently covers 2,300 acres and includes nearly 500 cows with about 235 of them milking an average of three times a day. The Hinchleys now offer farm tours to school groups, Scouts and organizations from near and far. During a non-COVID year the farm

will welcome as many as 10,000 guests during the busy tour season, according to Tina. A simple, productive life Tina and Duane’s story is about the simple joys of a lifelong connection through farming that was sewed into the fabric of their lives like seeds folded into the spring soil. “I needed to find a stable gentleman who had a purposeful life and would

enrich our lives,” Tina said of her quest to find a farmer. And Duane knew if Tina stuck around she was truly committed to the lifestyle and the near-endless work hours of a farmer. “Farming is special – it takes special people to do it,” Duane said. “It’s love, but there’s a commonsense practicality to it.” As they go about their daily chores Tina and Duane often spend 12 hours or more separated from each other by

their duties. But they look for ways to reinforce their love. “Sometimes it’s just a sticky note on the tractor steering wheel,” Tina said. But it’s a love that transcends work and finds purpose in a common goal. “We’re working side-byside,” said Tina, whether separated by inches or miles. “It has been exactly what I was looking for. “Who would’ve thought the newspaper would have made it happen.”

• OBITUARIES KENNETH R. INGLE Kenneth R. Ingle, of Lauderdale Lakes, died at his home in Indianapolis on Jan. 24, 2021. Mr. Ingle spent summers at Lauderdale from his birth in 1938 through 2020, witnessing many changes to the lakes during that time. The Ingle family has owned the same piece of property on Middle Lake since 1887. Ingle was a member of the Lauderdale Lakes Improvement Association, the sailing

and yacht clubs, and a founding director of the Kettle Moraine Land Trust. During his life, he loved waterskiing, swimming and boating of all kinds. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Elizabeth (Betsy) Ingle; sister, Carolyn (Walker) Johnson; daughter, Kathryn (John) Calkins; son, Edward (Megan) Ingle; four grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews who still enjoy Walworth County and the Lauderdale Lakes area.

CHARLES LAWRENCE Charles L. Lawrence, 73, of Elkhorn, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Feb. 4, 2021. He was born Feb. 14, 1947, in Cook County, Illinois, the son of Herschall and Emma (Aul) Lawrence who have preceded him in death, as well as his loving wife, Elaine M. (Sanderson) Lawrence. Charlie and Elaine were married on April 27, 1968, at First Lutheran Church in DeKalb, Illinois. They settled in Naperville, Illinois, where they raised their two children Richard (Annette) and Julie Lawrence. They ultimately retired between both of their homes in Elkhorn and Naples, Florida. “Papa Charlie” loved spending every moment possible with his most adored grandchildren Nicholas and Katelyn Lawrence. He was also a loving brother-in-law, cousin

and uncle to many. He was blessed to be loved by so many amazing friends as well. A private family memorial service was held at Anderson Funeral Home, in DeKalb Ill., on Feb. 11. Family and friends were encouraged and invited to attend virtually; the link can be found on the Anderson Funeral home website. Immediately following the service, a walk-through visitation was offered that afternoon at Anderson Funeral Home and be open to all. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the family requests social distancing and masks for those attending. Interment will be privately held at a later date.

WALTER YANDEL Walter “Wally” Yandel, 92, of Elkhorn died on Friday, Nov. 27, 2020. He was born in Chicago, Ill. on Jan. 10, 1928 to Edward and May Yandel. After WWII, Wally enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps where he spent time working on the electric distribution lines in the base on Guam. He came back to Chicago where he met Joan (nee Oliver). They were married April 1950 until Joan’s death in 2010. Together they raised their three children, Terri Paul, Phil Yandel and Amy Grabowski. After working as a pipefitter in the Chicago area, Wally and Joan retired to their home on Lauderdale Lakes in 1994 and then moved to their home

in Elkhorn in 2005 to be closer to friends. Wally was a member of the Moose Lodge and Lions Club. He enjoyed bowling, cards, puzzles, home projects, and socializing with his close friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Joan (2010), daughter Terri (2003), and grandson Stephen (2019). He is survived by his children: Phil (Jann) and Amy (Greg); grandchildren: Jonathan, Timothy, Morgen, David, Eric, Jeff, Alison and James; and his seven great-grandchildren. Due to the pandemic, a memorial service will be held sometime in the summer of 2021 in the Elkhorn. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the American Heart Association.

We Energies’ pipeline project is done on a massive scale

Take a drive through the rural areas skirting the southern rim of Burlington – including Spring Prairie, Lyons, Dover and Brighton – and you’d be hard-pressed to miss the massive construction project winding its way through the landscape. Blue-green steel pipes, 24 inches in diameter and 40 feet long, are being lowered into 4-foot-deep trenches and buried as part of We Energies’ Lakeshore Lateral natural gas pipeline construction. The project – proposed by the state’s largest utility in 2018 and approved by the Public Service Commission in early 2020 – covers nearly 50 miles from the southeast corner of Whitewater to the eastern edge of the Town of Paris. With an estimated price tag of $174 million, the 46mile pipeline is needed to answer future demand for natural gas in this area of the state, according to officials with We Energies. “The lateral will provide additional natural gas capacity to southeast Wisconsin to support economic growth in the region,” We Energies spokesman Brendan Conway said in a recent interview. “As we saw in Texas in February, reliable heat is incredibly important. Current and future residents and businesses in the service area will benefit from this improved reliability and service.” Although the project was conceived and planned before the initial announcement of the Foxconn project, officials with We Energies said the Foxconn proposal did add to the urgency when the pipeline project became public in 2018. Now that

The majority of the route is through agricultural land, which is restored to farming once the pipeline is installed, according the plan. “We work closely with the landowners to minimize the impacts,” We Energies spokesperson Amy Jahns said in a prior interview. Each private landowner among the estimated 100 affected by the pipeline is compensated by We Energies for the easement to their properties, according to plan documents. In the run-up to the PSC approval, We Energies hosted a series of open houses in

the summer of 2018 to allow residents to learn more about the project. For its part, the PSC sought written input about the project from the public and held two public hearings at Veterans Terrace in Burlington on Feb. 26, 2020, before approving the project. Conway asked that residents take caution in the construction zones. “We ask that the residents be alert while traveling through the construction area,” he said. “Please respect the traffic control signs and flaggers along the roads and trails. Our top priority is safety, including the safety of the public and construction crews, while minimizing the disturbance to the community.”

Boat sales surge in wake of pandemic

New watercraft hard to come by, area dealer says by Jason Arndt STAFF WRITER

Boat sales last year skyrocketed because of the COVID-19 pandemic and left many manufacturers racing to fulfill demands entering into this year’s boating season. The National Marine Manufacturers Association, which represents North American recreational boat, engine and marine accessory manufacturers, reported retail unit sales of new powerboats in the United States increased by an estimated 12% last year compared to 2019. The sales surge, according to the NMMA, hasn’t been this high since before the 2008 Great Recession. NMMA President Frank Hugelmeyer said boat sales increased as a result of the needs of people throughout the nation to find safe recreational opportunities last year. “2020 was an extraordinary year for new powerboat sales as more Americans took the water to escape pandemic stress and enjoy the outdoors safely. For the first time in more a decade, we saw an increase in first-time boat buyers, who helped spur our growth of versatile, smaller boats – less than 26-feet – that are often towed to local waterways,” Hugelmeyer said. The extraordinary year also trickled down to the local level including at Lakes Area Marine in Burlington, which has reportedly sold out of new boats for the 2021 season. Lakes Area Marine, which has been in business since 1988, offers new boat sales, a range of services, parts for repairs, accessories and storage for customers who seek a place for their watercraft during the winter. Owner Brian Biedrzycki said they didn’t initially recognize the sales surge at the start of 2020 because people faced some uncertainty on the COVID-19 pandemic’s direction. “It started out really slow because of concerns about what was happening,” Biedrzycki said. “Then everybody started buying up everything, paddle boards, inter tubes, waterskis, boats and pontoons.” Pontoons, he noted, have been most sought after of all watercraft on the market. Stalled production Marine manufacturers, much like their auto industry counterparts, encountered production shutdowns of their facilities due to COVID-19 restrictions and multiple other factors last year. The shutdown – or stalled production of some products, such as parts for repairs –

has caused some supply chain issues in the marine manufacturing industry. Pandemic-related supply chain constraints curbed powerboat production and shipment for several months in 2020, according to the NMMA, which expects these issues to subside and to see manufacturing levels return to normal this year. In the meantime, Biedrzycki emphasized the need for “patience and understanding” as area dealers wait for the industry to return to normal. “There are various reasons some of their production has closed down,” Biedrzycki said, adding that states where products are manufactured are in different places in the pandemic. Inundated dealers Although progress has been made through vaccines, the ongoing coronavirus pandemic will likely keep Americans interested in what they view as safe, outdoor recreational activities such as boating. The main reason, according to the NMMA, boils down to social distancing recommendations. “We expect consumer interest in boating to remain strong through 2021 and beyond with millions of Americans discovering the mental health benefits and joys of being outside and on the water,” Hugelmeyer said. Biedrzycki said he and other boat dealers have experienced a surge in demand, especially since most customers have already retrieved their boats from storage. Typically, mid-May is when Biedrzycki sees the most activity related to boat removal, but this year, he said, some customers began that process as early as March. “The dealers have already been inundated for the months of April and May. We are past that right now,” he said. Looking ahead For prospective first-time boat customers, Biedrzycki said they should come prepared before heading to a dealership, whose staff will help them in their quest to find the right watercraft. Dealers typically ask many questions, he said, ranging from intended usage to what lakes customers plan to use the watercraft on. “Let them guide you through the process so they can find you the right boat,” he recommended. Biedrzycki said some customers can begin making service requests for next season during the winter months. “The earlier you do things, the better. It is like getting your lawn mower fixed, right when your grass is growing… everyone wants their lawn mower worked on at that time,” Biedrzycki said.
