he Southern Wakes United Water Ski Show Team is a merger of the Lauderdale Aqua Skiers and the Whitewater Lake Sports Club (Minneiska Water Ski Team). The non-profit water skiing organization works to give the young and young-at-heart an opportunity to work together to build confidence in their abilities, learn new skills and promote leadership development, water safety education and sportsmanship. The two ski teams merged in 2018, forming the only water ski show team in Walworth County. “The teams were combined for a number of reasons, one being that both teams were suffering in membership, and merging them was the best way to combat that issue. We are two very similar teams that are situated quite close in proximity. It just made sense,” Southern Wakes board secretary Julie Abramson said. Board Vice-President Leslie Gostomski added that the gap between the “big” teams and the rest seems to be steadily growing. “At the size we each were, and with the limited resources and volunteer manpower we each had, we just couldn’t even come close to competing with the larger teams,” Gostomski said.

The Southern Wakes team is in Division III, and Gostomski said they would like to make a splash in Division II and possibly make it to Division I someday. “Things aren’t like they were when Julie and I were newer to the clubs back in the 80s. In the summer, ski club was all we did and all we cared about. Now, sports are year round, and kids aren’t able to commit to the team like they once were, and parents are over scheduled as well,” Gostomski said.

DIVING IN With many of the kinks of combining the two teams worked out in its inaugural season last year, organizers say the new team is building on its strengths. “Last year was our ‘dating’ year, and actually it worked out very well,” Abramson said. “There is always a learning curve in how things are done one way vs. another, but overall, it worked and was a really good fit. The combination of our skiers, drivers, family and leaders is only making us stronger.” Gostomski added that mergers were sometimes tricky and all the team members had to make adjustments. “To a certain extent we were tiptoeing around each other’s feelings, but all things considered, we really have very similar clubs which makes the “our way” and “their way” minimal, and truly

everyone was very open-minded and honest through the whole thing. We are very lucky, and now I can’t imagine it any other way,” Gostomski said. Southern Wakes will be performing shows at all of the previous teams’ locations – Scenic Ridge Campground on Whitewater Lake, Lauderdale Landing on Lauderdale Lakes, Elkhorn Lake in Babe Mann Park and Cravath Lake in the City of Whitewater, throughout the season. The team is also actively seeking to build its ranks. “We are the one and only Water Ski Show Team in Walworth County and we are always looking for and encourage new members,” Abramson said.

NEW THIS YEAR While the teams technically merged last year, this year it’s official, Abramson said. “New team, new name, new logo and great sponsors,” she said. Gostomski said they were starting with a “clean slate” in 2019 and focusing on playing to the team’s strengths. She added the team has been looking at its equipment and will have a new 2019 Nautique inboard coming, sponsored, in part by The Boat House of Lauderdale Lakes. “And we have updated and cleaned up most of our other boats,”

Gostomski said. “We were able to purchase some costumes from another team to accommodate our larger numbers. Our 2019 magazine will hit the stands Memorial Day weekend, and it is by far the biggest either club has ever had – 68 pages.”

A BIT OF HISTORY According to the Southern Wakes website, the Lauderdale Lakes Aqua Skiers began in the 1950s when a group of young people who loved to ski decided they wanted to perform for their friends and neighbors. Using their own boats and fuel, they performed a single, annual show in conjunction with the Lauderdale Regatta Day in front of the Sterlingworth Motor Hotel. Their only rewards were the appreciation of their audience and a complimentary dinner at the Sterlingworth after the show. With the advent of ski boats came new power and performance. LAS bought its own boat and began competing in the State Show Ski Tournament in the 1980s. In 1988, LAS took first place in the Wisconsin State Individual Barefoot Competition. Also that year team member Nancy Lynd O’Hara won the coveted Willa McGuire Cook Award for Best Female Performance Overall at the National Tournament. In 1990 the team won first place in Division II at the Wisconsin State

Show Tournament, claiming first place in dock equipment and safety, tow boat driving, announcing and overall show. In 1997, LAS hosted a “fun class” individual events competition where more than 150 novice skiers enjoyed the opportunity to compete in slalom, kneeboard and wakeboard. Saturdays on the Square A new but old tradition has returned to Elkhorn this year with Saturdays on the Square, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturdays in Veteran’s Park, through Oct. 12 (other than July 6 and Aug. 31.) The weekly event features a farm market element along with crafters, local food stands and a community counter. There are also plans to offer weekly themes or activity, or to feature a local event or organization. In an effort to expand the community outreach at Saturdays on the Square, local clubs and nonprofits as well as businesses are welcome to show their products or share information. WAVES • from front page act and were chosen from over 325 acts presented. The Whitewater Lake Sports Club was formed back in 1973 and included sailing, canoeing and skiing. The skiing portion continued with full strength and was named the Minneiska Water Ski Team in

1974. The team performed their first show on July 21, 1974 for the Lions Club. The ski team started competing in tournaments in 1975 and Minneiska was the only team in the state that year to pull a two-man 360. In 1979, the team performed

and executed a three-man 360, which had never been performed by an amateur team. In 1980, the Minneiska’s four-man 360 team was asked to perform at Tommy Bartlett’s. The word Minneiska means “white water” in the Sioux language.

Over the years the team and its skiers have won many awards including pulling 31 skiers behind a boat in 1980, breaking a record. The team has placed in nationals. Several skiers have earned awards for best swivel ballet, five skiers performing a 360 behind a single

boat, best trick skiing act, best male skier and best female skier. The team also placed for best Pick Up Boat Crew and for Dock Crew and Boat Drivers and, most recently Most Unique Act. For more information, visit southernwakesunited.com.

OCTOBER 19 – Elkhorn Oktoberfest, an annual celebration in downtown Elkhorn. The north parking lot of the government center will feature the annual car show from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event offers kids activities including games, pumpkin decorating, bounce house and more. solid brass bell clapper helped identify the ship as the Newberry. The boat was built at a cost of about $16,000. The Lucius Newberry usually made three trips daily from Lake Geneva to Fontana. A round-trip ticket cost 50 cents.

n April 24, 1875, an impressive new side-wheel steam paddleboat appeared on Geneva Lake. It was the largest boat on the lake with a length of 115 feet, which bested the Lady of the Lake (98 feet). That designation was important to Oscar Newberry. The new boat, according to local lore, was built in revenge because of Newberry’s alleged slight from Lady of the Lake Captain Quigley, who was said to have been a friend of the family. The story is that Newberry, son of Lucius, was fishing on Geneva Lake in a small boat when a storm came up. He signaled to the nearby Lady of the Lake for help. But for some reason, Quigley declined to help. Perhaps he didn’t see Oscar’s signal, but Newberry vowed he would build a larger and more luxurious boat than the Lady of the Lake, and so he did.

Spared no expense

Local and well-respected boat builder John W. French constructed the Lucius Newberry in Lake Geneva. Newberry spared no expense and indeed proceeded to have the most luxurious boat on the lake. It was capable of holding 700. The hull was designed using 3-inch thick oak planking, which was nailed to heavy, steam-bent oak frames. The paddle wheels were said to be 21 feet in diameter with 4-foot wide buckets. Early reports described the wheelhouses “as being beautifully ornamented and representing a rising sun and a starry heaven. The boat was powered by a two-cylinder, 125-horsepower Torrant steam engine.” The ladies cabin was designed with utmost elegance. Heart-shaped, it measured 39 by approximately 17 feet. Brussels carpets and richly upholstered furniture filled the room. The woodwork was appliquéd with Hungarian veneer and with heavygilded molding along the top and

One of them, Bill Ehrhardt, was credited with salvaging many of the boat’s artifacts. “Contrary to popular belief, the location of the boat was not unknown,” Ehrhardt said. “No one went to look for it.” Not until friends approached Ehrhardt, who owned a diving shop in the area. “They came to me because I had the boat.” The Newberry was said to have drifted out and followed its normal excursion route until it sank. It was speculated that its location was in a direct line in front of The Riviera and in front of the Allerton Landing. “Both were correct,” Ehrhardt said. “We were actually heading out to look for a sailboat that had sunk about two years before. I had them turn on the graphing machine and print out what they found.” After passing over the area several times they were sure something was there and decided to pursue it. “It was not the best time to dive because visibility was poor down to 10-12 feet.” The divers thought they could see big, round hub from the side wheel of the paddlewheel and the anchor. Ehrhardt, Ron Steickel and Mark Terry returned to shore to join friend and fellow diver Herb Budd.

Upon its completion, Oscar Newberry was named captain, carrying passengers, mail and cargo across the lake. He remained captain until 1879, when John Wilson of the Anchor Line Company purchased the Newberry and one or two of the smaller boats from the Newberry Steam Line. According to one report, Wilson also purchased Lady of the Lake from Edward Quigley. The Lucius Newberry underwent major repairs — rotting wood on the hull was replaced, the engines were overhauled and hogging trusses (large steel frames with steel rods attached to the bow and stern to make the hull stiffer) were added. Protect the environment with safe boating Recreational boating reaches its peak when the weather warms up and people take to waterways in droves. Spending a day on the water enjoying the scenery or trying your luck at fishing are popular pastimes. Following proper boating practices and etiquette can protect everyone onboard. Although ensuring passenger safety should be a priority, safeguarding against environmental impacts while boating also should be a concern. Marinas and various marine areas can become contaminated with pollutants generated from boating activities. Boat cleaning, fueling and marine head discharge are just a few of the pollutants that can find their ways into the water. A past study in the marine reserve of Cape Creus in the Mediterranean Sea found that boat anchoring also is a considerable threat to marine habitats, as vulnerable ecologies can be damaged by anchors. Although there are regulations in place to protect marine life and ecosystems, these rules aren’t always adhered to. Recreational boaters can do their part to keep oceans, bays, rivers, and lakes pristine by adhering to some sound advice.

Reduce engine exhaust Whenever possible, row, paddle or use sails to decrease engine use and subsequent exhaust. When engines must be used, do not idle unnecessarily. Always steer clear of the aft of the boat, where fuel fumes and carbon monoxide can cause serious health implications.

Keep trash on the vessel Do not discard any items over the side of the boat. Even seemingly harmless items can impact the environment. Store garbage in a bag and dispose of it properly when you return to the marina or dock. Secure items onboard so they will not blow off and end up in the water.

Avoid antifouling paints Antifouling paints are special paints applied to the underside of vessels to prevent or slow down the growth of barnacles and other organisms. Maritime New Zealand notes that these paints can harm other sea life and prove dangerous when scraped off and not discarded properly.

Keep boats in proper working order Poorly maintained boats may harm the environment. Inefficiently working engines can produce more exhaust and contaminate the air and water. Oil and other mechanical fluids can leak into the water and affect the marine environment. Proper maintenance helps keep boats safe and minimizes their impact on the environment.

Use pump-out stations Pump out stations at marinas enable boaters to safely dispose of the contents from sanitary systems without waste ending up in the water. Commercial ships, such as tankers and bulk cargo carriers, have the added threat of ballast water. Ballast water keeps vessels buoyant. See SAFE BOATING • Page 9

Teach them to fish How to make the most of kids’ first angling experience

Fishing provides a great way for parents to bond with their children in the great outdoors. The value of first impressions has been well-documented, and parents who want their kids to inherit a love of fishing can take the following factors into consideration so their youngsters’ first fishing trips are successful.

Local programs Fishing need not be an expensive hobby, but the costs can add up. Parents who are not sure if their kids will embrace fishing should look into local programs. Many towns, especially those with reputations for fishing, host free family fishing events. These events give parents an opportunity to see if their kids enjoy fishing before they start buying them gear.

Starting simple Any fisherman would love to snag a trophy fish such as a largemouth bass on his or her first trip. And while that’s possible, it’s unlikely, especially for youngsters. Such fish tend to be difficult to catch, even for seasoned fishermen. When taking kids fishing for the first time, fish for something that’s somewhat simple to catch and capable of being caught throughout the day. If you aren’t familiar with your local rivers or

lakes, visit a local outdoors store and ask for advice about which local bodies of water are home to fish that kids might be able to snag. Though it’s not imperative that kids catch a fish on their first trip, doing so might make them more enthusiastic about their next trip.

Having fun Don’t make the day all about catching fish, as even the most seasoned fishermen have their off days when nothing is biting. If the focus is on catching fish, kids might grow discouraged and not want to come back if they don’t catch anything on their first trip. Focus on the fun everyone is having rather than the fish they are (or aren’t) catching. Some youngsters might just be thrilled to spend a day out on the water with their parents. Encourage that enthusiasm and kids are more likely to remember their first fishing trips fondly.

Break time Kids might not have a full day of fishing in them on their first trip. Frequent breaks to explore nearby nature, enjoy a snack or even toss a ball around can keep children from growing bored throughout the day.

in addition to planting their flag they kept careful watch over the site. “When we were diving on the Newberry site, weekend flotillas from Fontana would hang around to try and poach the site. We would dredge around the site, especially on weekends, to stir up the bottom to prevent poachers from infiltrating the dive site.” Ehrhardt said there is always a question of who owns the articles recovered. “If there is no known direct owner, the artifacts belong to whoever pays for the recovery. After we had spent a lot of money on the dive, we tried to find someone to underwrite it. We contacted the city, but they did not have any interest in supporting the dig. We contacted Gary Gygax, who created the board game ‘Dungeons and Dragons.’ His company (TSR Hobbies) donated $10,000 to continue the dive.” Buckets of artifacts, including brass plumbing fixtures, were brought up. When it came time to bring up some of the larger pieces, additional help was required. Four trailer loads of artifacts and about 50 buckets of additional pieces were recovered. The largest artifacts were the boiler, engine and the paddlewheel. A crew took these to a storage facility in Maryland from the Smithsonian Institute, which is where they were examined to better understand the workings of these early engines. They are displayed at the Smithsonian or lent to other museums.

Delavan FD captain given Medal of Valor for saving girl’s life by Heather Ruenz STAFF WRITER

June 23, 2018 is a day Delavan Fire Department Captain Tom O’Neill will never forget. On that day he did something not many people can say they have. He saved a life. “I was at a kids’ birthday party, at the pool at Sunset Park (in Elkhorn) and heard someone screaming about a child being in the bottom of the pool,” O’Neill recalled. The girl was pulled up and when they got her out of the water she wasn’t breathing so O’Neill performed mouth-tomouth resuscitation. “Eventually she coughed and then started breathing. She was 3 years old – the same age as my daughter. They’re both 4 years old now and will actually go to school together,” O’Neill said. He said there were a lot of people at the pool at that time and the lifeguards did a great job at getting everyone out of the pool and out of the way and calling 911. By the time the ambulance arrived, the little girl’s mom was holding her. “Besides getting her back, the best news was that she had no neurological deficits at all, like it never happened,” O’Neill said. While it wasn’t his first save – O’Neill is an RNParamedic and firefighter and works as a trauma nurse at Froedtert Hospital in Milwaukee – it was special nonetheless and O’Neill is just thankful he was able to help. “With it being a little kid and I didn’t have my bag of

goodies with me because we were at the pool so it was just me and my hands and my mouth. It was all about timing and being in the right place and just by breathing and a little resuscitation I brought her back to life,” he said. He estimates it was 10 minutes or so before EMS arrived on the scene and said if the girl hadn’t received CPR as soon as she did, her chances of survival would have been slim, if at all. “This is a good reminder that people should learn CPR because you never know when or where it might be needed,” O’Neill said. He was awarded the Medal of Valor by the City of Delavan Fire Department at the annual awards banquet held recently. The parents of the girl he saved came to the awards banquet and helped present the medal to O’Neill. “That made it even more special, that they were part of it,” he said.

Singing the same old song Weak April inventories reduce home sales, push prices Wisconsin’s sales of existing homes failed to keep pace with last year’s sales for the second straight month, which put significant pressure on home prices. The Wisconsin Realtors Association’s latest analysis of the state’s housing market shows that home sales in April were 9.7 percent below the levels of 12 months earlier, while median prices rose 8.3 percent to $195,000 over that same period. On a year-to-date basis, sales lagged behind the first four months of 2018 by 7.8 percent, which pushed prices up 6.4 percent to $184,000.

The primary reason for the lower sales and higher prices is the continued weakness in inventories, which fell again in April. “We’ve been in a seller’s market for nearly two years, and if we continue to see limited homes for sale, we’ll have a hard time matching the 2018 sales levels this year,” WRA Chairman Jean Stefaniak said in a news release. According to the recent report, six months of supply signals a balanced housing market, and the statewide supply has been under that benchmark since June 2017. The state currently has 4.3

months of supply, which is down from the 4.6 months seen in April of last year. And the Southern Lakes region mirrors those trends almost across the board. Year-to-date sales decreased in all five counties compared to the first four months of 2018. Waukesha County numbers slipped the least at 1.8 percent, while Kenosha County sales were down 4.5 percent, they were 5.5 percent lower in Jefferson County and 6.7 percent in Racine County. Walworth County sales took the biggest hit at 7 percent.

So, the median prices climbed higher: Kenosha’s were up 8.6 percent, Jefferson’s 8.7 percent, Waukesha’s 5.1 percent and Racine’s 3.1 percent. The exception was Walworth County, where the median price dipped 2 percent to $200,000. The year-over-year numbers from April 2019 compared to April 2018 showed similar results: sales down and prices up. Jefferson County saw the only rise in sales this April compared to last April, but by only 0.9 percent. Waukesha County dipped only 0.2 percent, while Racine’s declined by 6 percent, Walworth’s by 11.6 percent and Kenosha’s by a whopping 16.1 percent. Still, the median prices this April rose in all five counties: Jefferson at 2.7 percent, Waukesha at 4.4 percent, Racine at 4.5 percent, Walworth at 5.3 percent and Kenosha at 9.7 percent. “Tight supply is an ongoing problem for nearly every region of the state,” Stefaniak said in the news release. The only exception was the North region, which had 7.4 months of supply in April, down from 8.2 months a year earlier. Interestingly, that region saw the smallest

reduction in sales of all regions in the state for the month of April. The Central region had five months of supply, and all other regions had supply at 4.3 months or lower. Stefaniak pointed out that the North region is primarily rural with a significant second-home market. “Rural areas have far more inventory than counties with larger towns and cities,” said Stefaniak, who noted that counties in metropolitan areas of the state had about half the inventory of rural counties. “If there is any good news on the inventory front this month, it’s that the new listings were up in April,” she said. The number of new listings in April was up 7 percent compared to April of last year. Still, the total listings in the state are down compared to where they were 12 months ago. “With a strong economy, there is a lot of demand pressure, which continues to push prices up well above the rate of inflation,” WRA President and CEO Michael Theo said in the release. The median price increased 8.3 percent over the past year, which is approximately four times the rate of inflation. According to the latest estimate from the U.S. Bureau of Labor

Statistics, the overall annual inflation rate was 2 percent in April. And core inflation, which excludes the more volatile food and energy sectors, came in at 2.1 percent. “Statewide home prices began rising in spring 2012, and they have generally exceeded the rate of inflation for nearly that entire time,” Theo said, noting that the annual rate of price appreciation has been 6 percent or higher for eight of the last 12 months. “Our housing is definitely getting less affordable, and eventually this will slow demand,” Theo added. The Wisconsin Affordability Index shows that fraction of the medianpriced home that a household with median family income can afford to purchase, assuming 20 percent down, and a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage on the remaining 80 percent of the balance. The index has fallen from 203 last April to 195 in April 2019, which is a decline in affordability of 3.9 percent over the last year. “We would have seen an even greater erosion of affordability were it not for the slight reduction in mortgage rates and modest increase in estimated family income levels since April 2018,” Theo said.

Williams Bay, Lake Geneva and beyond. “There is a lot in the (Elkhorn) industrial park that is underserved,” Meyer said. He said the businesses in that area are excited for additional options for guests to stay and for meeting room access. He also said the business wants to focus on the community. The Holiday Inn Express will have 83 rooms and feature amenities such as a swimming pool, an exercise room, and a 1,200-square foot meeting room for 50 to 60

people. Meyer said more people are choosing a high quality hotel experience. “There is a huge shift in consumer expectations,” Meyer said. The former goal, he explained, was to spend as little as possible for a night’s stay. “Now, people want to spend more for a good night sleep. Breakfast in the morning is critical,” he said. There will also be a restaurant in that area, but that has not been secured yet, Meyer said. He said
