ith the coronavirus putting a serious damper in summer activities across the nation and world, one area couple has a solution to the boredom – go camping! Simona and Jeremy Ebner opened Camp Kettlewood in East Troy recently and are accepting reservations for this summer.

“It’s a very interesting time to open a business, that’s for sure,” Simona Ebner said. “We didn’t know what would happen, but being a private campground it’s probably one of the better places to be.” The Ebners purchased the former Oak Knoll Girl Scout Camp at W3524 Highway 20, East Troy, in June 2019 and have spent the last year fixing up the campgrounds and renovating the lodge. “It had some good bones,” Simona Ebner said. “We put

in a kitchen and created some bedrooms and then in the fall we turned our attention to fixing up the campgrounds. Jeremy has spent a lot of time blazing a trail through the woods. It’s amazing how much time and money it takes to turn a campground into a campground. Who would have thought?” Simona said she and her husband decided to move out to the country from Milwaukee because they wanted more space and when they started looking at properties to buy,

she heard about the Girl Scout camp from a co-worker at Toppers Pizza in Whitewater. “I knew the property, I passed it often and thought, ‘This is interesting,’” she said. With her husband being “such an outdoorsman” Simona thought it would be a good fit. “He would love it and we could fix it up and share it with the community,” she said. “Sort of like flipping a house but way more interesting.” So, the couple, who are in their 30s, decided to take the plunge. “We don’t have kids, but this is such a family friendly, awesome place for exploring and learning about the wilderness we wanted to share that with other families,” Simona said. Fixing it up One of the big issues for the Ebners was they needed to bring everything up to modern code to open. “The Girl Scouts had it in the ’60s and everything was grandfathered in for them, for us, we needed to meet today’s codes,” Simona said. She said that while her husband is a big fan of rustic camping, she is more of a “glamping” type of girl. “So, we met in the middle and decided to offer both types of camping,” Simona said. Part of the experience is the antique feel to the campgrounds, which took some doing, Simona said. “We were in the process of buying this for a while, so the summer before last I went to a lot of vintage flea markets and secondhand stores looking for stuff. I’ve been collecting things for a couple

of years to get the right feel. I really liked doing that,” she said. The Ebners started taking reservations for the campsites on Memorial Day and spots were filling up fast. “We had 12 reservations the first week,” Simona said. What’s on the grounds? Camp Kettlewood has four campsites in total – one rustic site and three “glamping” sites, Simona said. “We have two vintage trailers – a 1977 Airstream and a 1957 Holly camper. We decorated them and fixed them up. They’re all in working order. No air conditioning, but they both have fans and there’s a nice cross breeze.” Kettlewood also has a group See GLAMPING • Page 4

Lefty’s grows stable of mobile munchies The roadside stop near Lauderdale Lakes now offers ice cream BY

efty’s Chicago Style Hot Dogs has been a staple in Elkhorn – and at numerous festivals and markets throughout the area – for several years. When Karlee Mann bought the business in 2014 she decided to keep the name the previous owner had given it. The roadside location is along Highway 12 near Lauderdale Lakes and within a couple of years of buying it, Mann expanded by adding a food truck, Lefty’s on the Go. Lefty’s also has a pontoon boat on Lauderdale Lakes – featuring a limited menu – that sells food and can also be booked for catering to parties on the lake. The restaurant is a seasonal operation, April to November but was able to open in late March this year. To abide by the Saferat-Home order due to COVID-19, the seating area, which is entirely outdoors, was closed temporarily and customers were only allowed to pick up food to take with them or eat in their vehicles. “We ask that for the safety of everyone that you please comply by the rules, as we wish to stay open and keep everyone safe,” Mann wrote on Facebook when they opened for the season. “We are looking forward to the day when this is all over with and everyone can sit down and enjoy a milkshake and hot dog over a game of checkers,” she added. The importance of social distancing affected Mann and her family personally. “None of my nephews, siblings (excluding my little brother), or grandparents have been able to make it to Lefty’s yet this year and normally they are my first customers,” she said in a post in early April. “This year Grammy (my mom) is making rounds to drop off their food on their front doorstep… Make sure you take care of your loved ones,” she said.

Among the hot dog options – for those wanting to go outside the box from what’s listed as the “boring dog” – are the porker, which is topped with BBQ pork, onion ring bits and BBQ sauce, and the melty dog, which is topped with ranch or BBQ sauce and melted mozzarella cheese. with one fan asking if it would be available every day to which Mann replied, “Possibly.” Mann’s mom, Dona Mann, and her aunt (and Dona’s sister), Tish Connolly, help run the business along with other employees.

Loyal customers Dona, who serves as the manager, said one of her favorite things about the business is the regular customers and their loyalty to Lefty’s. “There are a lot of people that pull in and we know their order before they get out of the car,” she said. Though it’ll be different this year due to so many events being canceled, the food truck side of the business accounts for a large portion of the summer revenue. Ribfest and the fair are two area events that remain on the calendar for Lefty’s on the Go and last weekend they were at the Town of Delavan’s Independence Day event at Community Park. Under normal circumstances, the truck is out most weekends at various events throughout the region, from festivals and farmers markets to ski shows and concerts. Lefty’s on the Go is available for private events, too – from graduation parties to weddings. If the ongoing success of Lefty’s is any indication, Pinky’s should be a plus for the business this year. As one customer commented recently, Italian sausage and ice cream is the “perfect” meal. Lefty’s Chicago Style Hot Dogs is at N7033 Highway 12, Elkhorn (just north of Highway A). The stand is open 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. (in the spring and fall they close at 6 p.m.) Pinky’s Ice Cream is currently open at 4 p.m. each day and closes at 8 p.m., except for Fridays and Saturdays when it’s open until 10 p.m. The stand is closed on rainy days and when that happens, an update is posted on their Facebook page that morning. We upgraded them, added electricity and mosquito netting all around them, stapled to the sides. “Those have extra plush mattresses with high thread count sheets and antique camping decorations.” The Hilton rents out starting at $195 a night. The group campsite sleeps eight with two queen-sized beds and four twin-sized beds. The other campsites are: • The Prairie, which is the rustic, pitch-a-tent campsite. Prices start at $35 a night; • Oak Knoll, which features the 1957 Holly camper. The camper has one double bed and one twin bed. Prices start at $75 a night; and • Mushroom Gulch, which is home to the 1977 Airstream camper and a view of the campsite’s ponds. changed some things to help keep everyone safe and to put the campers at ease. “Well, the campgrounds themselves are pretty isolated, so you’re not going to be meeting the other campers a lot, unless you want to,” Simona said. “And we’re encouraging everyone to bring single-use items like paper plates and plastic silverware for use while camping.” Simona said the campsites and trailers will be cleaned thoroughly after each renter(s) leaves. “The big thing we did was dedicate a bathroom to each campsite, so campers aren’t sharing facilities. That took some thought and planning, but it was a priority,” Simona said. “We have four campsites and four separate bathrooms, which will be labeled for each specific site and cleaned with approved cleaners after each checkout.” The campground is not open to the public, so campers know that only people with a reservation are on the site, she added. “And if you want to wear a face mask, it’s totally fine, but you probably won’t even COVID-19 concerns encounter people,” Simona With opening the said. “The only gathering campgrounds in the middle of spot is really the bathrooms a pandemic, Simona said they and we’ve strategized that.”

we can’t have a dog park out here.” Camp Kettlewood sits on 80 acres of old-growth forest, shaded nature trails and

protected wetlands, according to the website. “No swimming holes, though,” Simona said. “We have some ponds, but you

Tourists, many from Illinois, are flocking to Lake Geneva in spite of the continuing pandemic. “Lake Geneva is a city of around 8,000,” Nord said. “On a holiday weekend the city is receiving 30,000 or more visitors on a daily basis.” Nord said that with good weather, and individuals in other states subjected to stayat-home orders, Lake Geneva will continue to see a large number of visitors. “The question became how to best deal with the increasing number of people,” Nord said. “Closing the beach, and the city’s numerous parks, would only serve to force more people into even closer quarters.”

“I think a lot of people are still going to come to the fair if you tell them, this is one time only it’s going to be a buck or two more per person and we’re going to remain a dry fair,” McClory said, adding that upwards of 90% of constituents do not want alcohol at the fair. “This past week I have had two people tell me they want to have alcohol, and I’ve had at least 25 people contact me saying, ‘Do not let alcohol come into the fair at any cost, not for these amount of hours, not for this type of location,’” McClory said. “Those people have to leave the grandstand at some point and come mingle with other people. They have to get in their cars and

drive away. I need to support those constituents, and I am not going to vote in favor of this,” he added. Alderman Ron Dunwiddie echoed McClory’s statement, noting similar responses from constituents within his district and said he was not in favor of the sale of alcohol at the fair. While Alderman Tim Shiroda admitted he was on the fence, he noted the decision before the council was whether or not the Agricultural Society had met the requirements and qualified for a liquor license and whether or not the fair should sell alcohol was a business decision the society needed to make. “I get the passion of the people for and against it, but most of the

questions I heard should be to the fair board, not to us,” Shiroda said. “The only question for this council for whether they get a permit or not is whether they qualify for it,” he said. The motion to approve by Myrin, seconded by Alderman Frank Boggs, included stipulations that alcohol consumption be limited to the grandstands and horse track areas, and that City of Elkhorn Police Chief Joel Christensen review and approve of security procedures for the fair, once available. The motion was approved 4-2, with Aldermen Myrin, Shiroda, Boggs and Dunwiddie voting in favor and Aldermen McClory and Young voting against.

New outdoor space In an effort to protect the health of staff as well as their customers, Duesterbeck’s is currently limiting the number of people allowed in the Tap Room to 50. But because the brewing company is on a farm, there’s plenty of open space to work with. “The new patio is great. We hope it will help people feel more comfortable stopping by and is something we planned to all along,” Laura said. A stage next to the patio will feature live music, which kicked off last weekend. More concerts are being added. Laura’s mom, Cathy Duesterbeck, handles the bookings. They’ll start a canning line soon, which will feature 12 oz. cans of beer but only one kind at a time – beginning with Crop Duester – because they have to purchase an entire pallet of the cans. “We’re on the game plan for what we wanted to do this summer with the outdoor patio and stage. We moved up taking down the pig barn because the guy doing the patio was also going to do that so it made sense to move it up,” she said. The “pig barn,” which is what Laura and her sisters
