Fair aims for huge impact in 2017 Big animals, big acts, big fun slated at the Walworth County Fair

he Walworth County Fair returns in a big way for 2017. The fair, which will run from Aug. 30 through Sept. 4, will have a theme of “Are You Ready For Big?” and organizers are emphasizing this year’s event will be big in multiple ways. “We are pretty excited. I think we’re going to have a really good fair this year,” said Larry Gaffey, the general manager of the fair. “People are going to love it. We will have the biggest turkey, the biggest boar and biggest horse. No one will believe how big these turkeys are. It will be fun to look at all that stuff.” The fair will also feature some of the biggest names in music, including the recent announcement of Martina McBride performing. Also, Foghat and Blue Oyster Cult will hit the fair stage on Sept. 3 at 7 p.m.

Other events Riders won’t be taking any bull when the fair kicks off on Aug. 30. At the grandstand at 7 p.m., professional bull riders will participate in competitive riding. Also a part of the event will be the Pro Elite World Challenge barrel racing competition as cowgirls ride athletic horses through a course and around barrels. Professional riders will compete against sanctioned local riders. Then on the last day of August, more competition will be at the grandstand, as the Walworth County Fair Truck and Tractor Pull takes center stage at 11 a.m. and the Badger State competition will start at 7 p.m. The county pull is free, but there is a $5 admission fee for the Badger State event. “There will be big motorsports, bull rides and great carnival rides,” Gaffey said. After the month of August comes to a close, so will the fates of several old automobiles, as monster trucks will roar through the grandstand. All Star Motorsports Productions hosts the fair’s monster truck rally on Sept. 1 at 7 p.m. Returning to the fair this year are the arm wrestling tournament, which will feature tests of strengths by people of all ages with weigh-ins on Sept. 2 at noon, and the Strut Your Stuff Recipe Challenge the same day at 11:30 a.m. The fair will also feature Woody’s Menagerie, a live wildlife education presentation with tigers, lions and even ligers, a hybrid of a male lion and female tiger. The fair will also feature the entertainment that it has become so well known for. Foghat and Blue Oyster Cult will hit the stage on Sept. 3 at 7 p.m. in the grandstand. Fair • from front page rumbling will be in the air on Labor Day, as the demolition derby hits the grandstand with three heats – one at 1:30 p.m., the second at 4 p.m. and the last one at 6:30 p.m. Wristbands will be available for $10 so fairgoers can see all three heats.

The fair’s horse events Horses will be a major portion of the fair as well, as 12 events will be on the docket between Friday and Monday. All day on Friday starting at 8:30 a.m., the Smiles Open Horse Show will be in the Horse Arena. Also on Friday, the Draft Horse Halter Class will be at 10 a.m. in the Draft Horse Arena. On Saturday at 8:30 a.m., the Boots and Saddle Open and Speed Show will take place in the Horse Arena. The Draft Horse Arena will be the site for the Cart/Hitch competition at 10 a.m. The Harness Races will be at noon at the grandstand. On Sunday, the horse events continue with the Linn 4-H Youth Benefit Horse Show in the Horse Arena at 8:30 a.m. Hitch Class starts at 10 a.m. in the Draft Horse Arena.

The implements of summer Summer brings out two vastly diverse species of sports persons wielding sticks, and I’m not referring to hockey and lacrosse. I’m talking about fishing poles and golf clubs. While not impossible, it is a rarity to find a golfer who enjoys the rigors of fishing and vice versa. If you happen to do both, good for you. But by and large fisherpersons fish and golfers golf. That is the way the world was created. Logistics demand it. Both sports require patience and time. Lots of time. There simply aren’t enough hours in the day to both fish and play golf. So one must choose. To golf or to fish: that is the

question. Unless you need no sleep. But most of us do. Along with being time hogs, the two activities share a number of commonalities. The first is money. Both sports can get expensive if you are going to dive in hook, line and sinker. You’ve got to have the right equipment and dress the part. For a fisherperson this can involve a lucky shirt, lucky

hat, a rod, reel, bait, tackle box, life vest and boat. For a golfer it often includes one glove, lots of clubs, even more balls, double that on tees, a visor, special shoes, a polo shirt, goofy looking pants or maybe knickers and a golf cart, if you are really serious about the sport. Competitiveness and (dare we say) a propensity to perhaps exaggerate one’s abilities and success on the green or on the water are also par for the course. The way this is demonstrated differs between the two, however. With golf, the scores inexplicably inch lower while with fishing the inches of “the one that got

away” grow higher. Both involve water. Fisherfolk are on the lake. Golfers can be in the drink. With golf, the aim is to put a tiny ball into a tiny hole. With fishing it is to put a big fish into your big boat, or dinghy, if your boat’s not that big. Size matters to fisherman, but only when it pertains to the size of the fish. Size isn’t as important in golf. Accuracy and power of drive lead to success or maybe even a hole in one. Both activities give you access to fresh air. They involve patience and a steady hand, and all it takes is one great shot or one great catch to make the entire day, well, great. Golfers and fisherpeeps are known for their litany of excuses when things don’t go

as hoped. The wind shifted. The sun was in my eyes. Too many clouds. Wrong ball. Wrong bait. A bad hook. Lost my ball in the drink. Lost my lure in the lake. Sand trap. Sand bar. Lousy swing. Lousy cast. Lousy weather. The sports also share some of the same terms, albeit with different meanings. Golf involves the dreaded worm burner. Some fisherfolks dread the worm baiting. In golf a hook is a bad thing. In fishing it is a sharp thing. In golf a birdie is a good thing. In fishing it is a flying thing that may or may not be in competition with a fisherperson for said catch of the day – especially if it is an eagle or albatross. When fishing you hope to catch a

lunker. With golf you hope to avoid the bunker. Golfing and fishing. They are as different as they are the same. And they give us a reason to get outside and enjoy a tiny hook or a tiny white ball, depending on your preference. And, despite the many comparisons, there’s one difference between golfing and fishing that cannot be overlooked: No matter how hard you try, you can’t eat golf balls for dinner. • OBITUARY ROBERT J. REYNOLDS Robert (Bob) J. Reynolds, 82, of Elkhorn, died peacefully surrounded by his family July 15, 2017, at his residence. He was born Aug. 21, 1934, in Oak Park, Ill., to the late Frank R. and Margaret F. (Richert) Reynolds. He served in the U.S. Navy Reserves from 1952 until 1954. He was united in marriage to Caroline R. Criscuolo on Aug. 12, 1953, in Oak Park, Ill. He worked in sales for over 30 years with the R.H. Donnelley Corporation of Chicago, retiring in 1989. He was a resident of Lauderdale Lakes for over 45 years and he and Carol enjoyed spending

their winters in Florida. Bob was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather who will be deeply missed by his wife of 63 years, Carol; four children, Jim (Sue) Reynolds of Westmont, Ill., Tom Reynolds of Chardon, Ohio, Ken (Lori) Reynolds and Karen Reynolds, both of Elkhorn; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, a brother; Jack Reynolds of Chicago; and a sister, Margaret McBride of Buffalo Grove,

Ill., and a host of other relatives and friends. Bob was preceded in death by his brother, Frank Reynolds Jr. and his brother-inlaw, Tom McBride. Services were July 20 at St. Patrick Catholic Church 107 W. Walworth Street Elkhorn, with the Rev. Bill Key officiating. Private inurnment was at Mt. Olivet Cemetery Elkhorn. Brothers represent Wisconsin at national 4H shooting competition for their improvement in shooting, including Jack’s first-place finish at nationals. “We tried to practice every night for an hour to an hour and a half, and two or three nights a week, Bob A. would come over,” Jack said. “The Walworth County 4H Club holds two shooting practices a month, usually, so the one-on-one coaching really helped,” Cole added. The road to nationals for Jack, a senior at Elkhorn Area High School, and Cole, a sophomore, began with state qualifying at invitational events hosted by different counties. The more invitationals a shooter

competes at, the better chance they have at achieving a state ranking. The top 10 ranked shooters in each discipline get first choice at what discipline they want to compete in at nationals. Each shooter can only shoot one discipline at nationals and cannot shoot the same discipline at nationals again. Though both of them shot smallbore pistol, rifle and air pistol at the county and state levels, in air pistol, Jack was ranked No. 1 in Wisconsin, Cole, No. 2 so they earned first choice at shooting air pistol at nationals, which is what they chose. “I’ve always been better at air

Arnold explained that in air pistol, competitors shoot from 10 meters, or about 33 feet, at an x-ring about the size of a small pea. “They have to stand up and shoot one-handed with no support,” Arnold said. Jack and Cole said many things play into shooting accurately. “For pistol, it’s so many things… the angle of your feet and body, hand placement and even breathing technique,” Cole said. “In addition, your heart rate increases which can trigger pulses in your finger,” Jack explained.

100 years and counting for area hospital Two longtime employees of Lakeland Medical Center share their stories Ruenz

A hospital in Walworth County has been serving the greater community for 100 years. The former Lakeland Hospital, Elkhorn, was established in 1917. In 1995,

it joined Aurora to become Aurora Lakeland Medical Center. Two longtime employees recently shared their history with the hospital – as well as why they have remained there throughout their entire careers. Jo Dewart began working at

Lakeland on July 17, 1973, on the night shift as a certified nursing assistant on the medical floor. She’s the first one to admit surprise about staying employed there 44 years. “I was going to work here for the summer and make enough money

to drive out to Maine,” Dewart, a Delavan Township resident, said. “But it was a damn, good summer, obviously, so here I am,” she added with a hearty laugh. Dewart is a health unit coordinator at Lakeland – a position

she’s held more than once in different units within the hospital. Over the years, she has held many positions, including CNA in the Emergency Room; materials handler; and pharmacy technician. “I took the boards in 2010 to get certified as a nurse and picked up many hours in nursing while working those other jobs,” she said. In addition to connecting with the people she’s worked with, Dewart credits Lakeland Hospital – and then Aurora – for her longevity because of their willingness to let employees move around within the facility. “I like that we could try different jobs and they offered classes for a variety of things, so I could learn new things as I went along,” she said. Dewart said in her opinion, Lakeland has been around 100 years because it’s a community hospital and is community driven. “It’s always been like a family here – everyone helped everyone and we all know what’s going on with each other. There’s always change and that keeps it from becoming stagnant. I like that we continue to grow,” she said. “We have patients I’ve seen for 40-plus years and people that were born here, work here now. Aurora has done well keeping us current and that’s been challenging but we’ve done well,” she continued. In her position as health unit coordinator, Dewart said her job includes a variety of tasks. “I’m on the medical floor mostly but also help in ICU. I do the assignment board and get the phones set up for the nurses and aides. I do folders for admissions and make sure strips are run when needed for

Other duties include coordinating patient transfers in and out of Lakeland, ordering supplies for the floor and assisting with discharge papers. “I also talk to and coordinate with the doctors a lot, and basically do whatever nurses need done to help them do their jobs,” Dewart said. Dewart has been, or is, involved with many groups and organizations in the greater community. She was an emergency medical technician with the Elkhorn Rescue Squad (but has since retired), is a member of the United Church of Christ in Williams Bay and American Legion Post 95 in Delavan, is a voting inspector for the Town of Delavan, and continues to volunteer at numerous events in the area. “I also travel a lot with a group of 12 women called, ‘The Old Broads’ but that’s a whole other story,” she said. Dewart offered advice to those entering their careers or beginning a new job – in any field. “Stick it out. Things change all the time so something you don’t like today could be different tomorrow. And if you don’t like something, talk about it because most of the time there are people that will listen,” Dewart said. “No job is smooth all the time but most are the majority of the time. But, if you’re unhappy, leave,” she added.

It’s a good fit

Dr. Jeffery Scherer, a radiologist at Lakeland since 1985, is celebrating 32 years

of employment with the hospital this month. As a doctor in the U.S. Navy, he took care of pilots and said he’s thankful for that experience as it led him to radiology. “A friend in the Navy introduced me to it. I’ve always been a visual person so it’s a good fit for me. I’ve never regretted going this route one bit,” Scherer, of Delavan, said. He said while looking for a job in the area – his wife owns a business in Delavan – his choices were Janesville and Lakeland, the latter of which had an opening. Scherer, much like Dewart, said forming relationships with his coworkers has been “the best part. Even when Aurora bought us 20 years ago or so, everybody pretty much stayed. The people are the biggest thing.” He said Lakeland joining Aurora has been a positive thing, for the hospital and the greater community as a whole, as well as his job. “It brought us to the next level, with new equipment that’s more in-line with the industry so it’s been good,” he said. Scherer said when embarking on a career, people should consider a few key points. “It comes to whether you’re a big city person and like the hustle-bustle or are a small town person where sometimes everyone knows your business, whether you want them to or not. But they also have your back,” he said. Scherer said pursuing a career in the medical field will

offer a lot of opportunities. “You can go anywhere and if you work for someone like Aurora, once you get in their system, you can work at any of their facilities,” he said. Scherer, who estimates he reads anywhere from 60 to 70 scans a day as a radiologist, said he continues to be impressed with advances in technology. “From the ease that radiologists can now read X-rays and offer immediate

second opinions – when called for even if they’re not in the area – to the on-screen dictation we use now, it’s amazing,” he said. Scherer said he’s hoping to retire within a couple of years. “I don’t want to be one of those that hangs on too long, but I thoroughly enjoy what I do and working here.”

Tight inventory makes available homes a hot commodity

The Wisconsin housing market continued its expansion in June, with both sales volume and prices reaching record levels, according to an analysis of the existing home market by the Wisconsin Realtors Association. June home sales were up 0.9 percent compared to June last year, which is the second straight month where the annual pace of sales increased at a modest rate. In contrast, home prices continued to grow at a robust pace in June, with the median price increasing 6.3 percent over the past 12 months to $186,000. Locally, the three-county area (Kenosha, Racine and Walworth) saw the number of homes sold in June increase by five over June 2016 and the median price for those homes was up $15,583. The statewide figures represent the highest levels for price and sales volume since the organizations recalibrated its methodology for data collection in 2005, according to the WRA.

annual inflation rate in the range of 2.2 percent to 2.8 percent between January and April but dipped to 1.9 percent in May as oil prices moderated. In contrast, Wisconsin’s June median home prices bottomed out at $140,000 in June 2011. Since that time, prices have increased at an annual rate of 4.7 percent, which compares to an annual pace of inflation of just 1.4 percent over that same period. “Home prices this June are now 32.8 percent higher than that same month six years ago,” said Theo. “As long as our inventories remain tight, there will be pressure on prices.” He said this is good news for sellers, but it has a negative impact on affordability. The Wisconsin Housing Affordability index measures the fraction of the median-priced home that a household with median family income can afford to buy, assuming a 20 percent down payment combined with a 30year fixed-rate mortgage for the remaining balance. The higher the index, the more affordable housing is in the state. The index was at 210 in June 2017, which is about 3.2 percent below the level of June 2016. “We’ve had the good fortune to have solid job growth, which has pushed income levels up in the state and at least partially offset the slight increase in mortgage rates and the more rapid growth in home prices,” said Theo. However, the WRA predicts affordability will continue to slip over the remainder of the year, and encourages potential buyers to move quickly when they find the right opportunity.

Builders group predicts Foxconn housing boom The Wisconsin Builders Association responded to the recent announcement that Foxconn plans to bring 13,000 new jobs to the area and likely many more once other suppliers follow Foxconn’s lead and relocate to southeastern Wisconsin. Foxconn will construct a high-tech manufacturing and technology campus comprised of multiple buildings totaling 20 million square feet, and will produce liquid crystal display (LCD) panels for a variety of electronics. “This will have a big impact on our industry to provide safe and affordable housing in southeastern Wisconsin. Members of the WBA are ready to help provide housing options for those that are new to the area and those that are looking for new housing options in the future,” Wisconsin Builders Association President David Belman stated in a press release following the announcement last week. New housing will not only help spur more job creation, but will also provide additional revenue to state and local governments. The estimated one-year metro area impacts of building 1,000 single family homes in Wisconsin, according to the release, include: • $180.7 million in income for Wisconsin residents; • $29.8 million in taxes for the state and local governments in the state; • 3,255 jobs in Wisconsin These are local impacts, representing income and jobs for residents of Wisconsin, as well as taxes (and other

sources of revenue, including permit fees) for all local jurisdictions within the area. There are also one-year impacts that include both the direct and indirect impact of the construction activity itself, and the impact of local residents who earn money from the construction activity spending within the state. The additional, annually recurring impacts of building 1,000 single family homes in Wisconsin, according to the WBA include: • $34.1 million in income for Wisconsin residents; • $12.4 million in taxes for the state and local governments in the state, and; • 690 jobs in Wisconsin. These are ongoing, annual local impacts that result from new homes being occupied, and the occupants paying taxes and otherwise participating in Wisconsin’s economy year after year. To fully understand the impact residential construction has on a state, it’s important to consider the ongoing benefits as well as the one-time effects, the WBA contends. “We want to commend Gov. SENTRY STORE TO CLOSE, OWNER CONFIRMS BY Ryan Spoehr STAFF WRITER

A liquidation sale sign went up in front of the Sentry store at 801 N. Wisconsin St. earlier this month, as well as a banner on the front window, thus marking the beginning of the end of a business that has been in Elkhorn for several decades. Jon Curry, who owns the Sentry business in Elkhorn confirmed the business will be closing, in a span of less than two years after he purchased it from Tyler Daniels late in 2015. In April, after a for-sale sign appeared on the property, Curry said he had no plans at that time or in the near future to sell or close his business, stating the building was for sale. But since that time, shelves have progressively become increasingly bare as the amount of product available has continually lessened. Recently, several of the business’ freezers were no longer in use, frozen products were not being sold, and the cooler items in the deli were no longer sold. Curry’s purchase in 2015 ended the 18-year involvement of the Daniels family in the Elkhorn Sentry business that spanned 18 years. Shortly after, Curry purchased the Lake Mills Sentry from Brian Conrad, who had owned that store for 40 years. Terry Daniels bought the Elkhorn store in 1997, according to the Daniels Foods website. Later on, ownership was transferred to Tyler Daniels prior to the business being sold to Curry. Curry declined to comment for this story and did not provide a projected closing date for the store.
