he Walworth County Board of Supervisors voted 8-1 in favor of approving the rezone request for the Norman L. Brummel and Jean A. Brummel Trust at its meeting on March 10. Supervisor Charlene Staples was the sole supervisor to cast a vote against the motion to approve the rezone, while Supervisor Tim Brellenthin recused himself from the discussion and vote. There was

no discussion between supervisors following the motion by Supervisor Rick Stacey. In addition, a qualified protest petition on file required a 3/4 majority vote in favor for approval at the March 10 meeting. Land Use and Resource Management Director Michael Cotter noted on the record that the counsel for the applicant had filed a dispute over the protest petition as well, though as it stood at this time, the Board would proceed with the super majority vote. In October 2019, the Sugar Creek Town Board voted 3-0 in

favor of approving the rezone request, which is intended to allow for the construction of a Dollar General retail store on the property, roughly located across from Tibbets Elementary School and the Mobil Gas Station off of County Highway A in the Town of Sugar Creek. Both the Sugar Creek Plan Commission and Town Board approved the rezone, noting that the Comprehensive Plan already calls for the land to be rezoned to B-2 and that if it were to not approve the rezone, the Town could face legal action.

Numerous concerns had been listed by residents at previous meetings as well as the Feb. 20 County Zoning Agency meeting, such as traffic, potential for burglaries and crime, a potential decrease in home values, the safety of children at the nearby school, and whether or not Dollar General was the best fit for the location. At the Feb. 20 meeting, residents also provided members of the zoning agency with a petition opposing the rezone with signatures from 550 sugar creek residents and 220 residents from surrounding areas,

including Brellenthin, who recused himself from the discussion and vote at the meeting as well. In addition to echoing concerns listed in previous meetings, residents also noted a landowner’s protest on file and that they do not want and will not patronize the store, if it is constructed. It is expected that representatives of Dollar General will have to return to the Town of Sugar Creek Plan Commission in the future for the approval of other documents in the future, such as a site plan and any conditional use permits.

Area food pantries benefit from Sergi Farms The Nicholas D. Sergi Foundation, and associated entities, made significant contributions – ranging from helping to underwrite the cost of a Thanksgiving dinner for 130 people to donating more than 2,400 pounds of ground beef – to help people in southeast Wisconsin. Additionally, the foundation raised more than $100,000 for future donations at an event held last fall. All of the activities were intended to honor the memory and legacy of Nicholas Sergi the founder of Sergi Farms located in Elkhorn who died following an accident in late October of 2018. “We forever have been moved by Nick’s generosity and his concern for others and his capacity to share in his good fortune,” Dominic and JoAnn Sergi, Nick’s father and mother said. “His personal belief that giving makes you smile motivates his brothers, friends and us to remember him by supporting the people and the causes in Southeast Wisconsin that captured his heart.” Among the ways the foundation and others have supported Nick’s zest for sharing include: • Thanksgiving meal donation – more than 130 people who otherwise might not have been able to share in a traditional Thanksgiving meal were treated to a full turkey dinner with all the trimmings at the Matheson Memorial Library courtesy of a number of donors, including the NDS Foundation. The Foundation provided funds for the Thanksgiving dinner that was prepared and served by 22 volunteers and supporters of the Walworth County Food Pantry. • Fall donation of 1,200 pounds of beef – for the second time in 2019, Sergi Farms and the NDS Foundation made separate contributions of approximately 1,200 pounds of beef. The first fall delivery, totaling more than 750 pounds, was delivered to the Walworth County Food Pantry on Oct. 28. The Walworth County Food Pantry distributed the meat to additional food pantries throughout southeast Wisconsin. The donation benefitted more than 700 families. • Family, Farm & Faith Festival – in conjunction with its establishment, the NDS Foundation held its first event, the Family, Farm & Faith Festival on Oct. 5, 2019 in Elkhorn. The family-oriented event incorporated Nick’s true passions, while raising funds to support agencies and non-profit groups and causes that were near and dear to his heart. In all, more than $100,000 was raised through the event. • Last January to fulfill preliminary discussions Nick had been involved in with St. Patrick’s Church and a commitment he had made, 1,200 pounds of beef were delivered and donated to the Walworth County Food Pantry in early 2020. The pantry distributed the meat to additional food pantries throughout Southeast Wisconsin. The donation benefitted more than 700 families, and thousands of individuals, throughout southeast Wisconsin. “As an all-volunteer organization that is completely dependent on the generosity of others, the donations that have been made by the Nicholas D. Sergi Foundation, Sergi Farms and the Sergi Family have meant the world to us,” says Susan Hughes, the Volunteer Managing Director of the Walworth County Food Pantry Inc.

Local foundation raises money for FFA

The Nicholas D. Sergi Foundation raised $6,100 for the Elkhorn Future Farmers of America organization during a month-long campaign to honor the legacy of Sergi Farms Founder Nick Sergi. The foundation was established by the Sergi family in memory of their beloved Nick, who passed away in October 2018 at the age of 28. Sergi Farms continues operations, raising beef cattle in Elkhorn and delivering grass-finished beef throughout the Midwestern U.S. March 28 would have been Nick’s 30th birthday, so the foundation wanted to honor his legacy with a campaign – for every beef box sold by Sergi Farms in March, the foundation promised to donate $100 to the Elkhorn FFA Organization. “It has always been important to the Sergi family and to the foundation that we honor Nick’s legacy,” Joe Sergi said. “When it came to Nick’s 30th birthday, we knew we had to do something particularly special.” The goal was to sell 30 beef boxes throughout the month of March, which would help them reach a $3,000 donation to the Elkhorn FFA. But their supporters gave double that amount. “We’re overwhelmed with the support from our community, friends, and Sergi Farms customers,” Joe Sergi said. “This response really shows the love for Nick and continued support of his legacy.” Sergi Farms sold 61 beef boxes in March, so the foundation will donate $6,100 for the Elkhorn FFA Organization’s agricultural education programs, including the development of animal and plant science programming at the Elkhorn Agricultural Science department. “This financial support will be used to provide a long-lasting learning impact for Elkhorn students as we invest in animal science training equipment and support the development of a land-based learning lab for students,” said Elkhorn FFA advisor David Kruse. “We are very excited about this support, financially and philosophically, and what it means to our organization,” he added. Kruse said the donation comes at an exciting time as the department adds a second agriculture teacher and the school district seeks to grow the quality and scope of the program. The donation of more than $6,000 is another in a series of events and activities that have been facilitated by the Sergi family and the Nicholas D. Sergi Foundation.

Activities range from helping to underwrite the cost of a Thanksgiving dinner for 130 people to donating more than 2,400 pounds of ground beef to help those less fortunate in southeast Wisconsin. Additionally, the foundation raised more than $100,000 for future donations at an event held in the fall and donated $75,000 to USO of Illinois to establish the Nicholas D. Sergi Reflection Room within the Quiet Wing at the Great Lakes Naval Base. Many of these activities executed to assist

those less fortunate help fulfill plans that Nick had begun making prior to his death. Sergi Farms is a grass-finished beef cattle farm in Elkhorn. Founded on the love for agriculture and animals, Nick started Sergi Farms in 2013. Today, his family continues to run the business to carry on Nick’s legacy. Rajsky said the land trust continually looks for ways to help preserve natural areas. “One of the things we emphasize is finding areas that are climate resilient,” he said. “So we’re looking for land that has the potential to mitigate climate change or that is equipped to adapt with more resilience whatever adversity comes along.” To that end, the GLC is starting a new program it calls Conservation at Home, which will see it working with Master Gardener volunteers. “Most of the land in Walworth County is privately owned, so we want to have teams of Master Gardeners and other conservation experts meet with landowners for one to two hours and talk to them about how they can make their properties more environmentally friendly,” Yancey said.

Grab the fishing poles and tackle – it’s time to fish! Licenses, stamps, tags needed for all anglers older than 16 Wisconsin residents who are 16 years old or older need a fishing license to fish in any waters of the state. Residents need a fishing license to take rough fish by hand, hook and line or to spear fish where allowed. Residents do not need a fishing license to take smelt, rough fish, or minnows with nets, traps, and seines of legal size. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resource’s Guide to Wisconsin Spearing, Netting, and Bait Harvest Regulations has more information on additional regulations. Nonresidents who are 16 years old or older need a nonresident

fishing license to fish in Wisconsin waters with hook and line. Nonresidents need a fishing license to take rough fish by hand, hook and line, or to spear fish where allowed. Nonresidents of any age need a fishing license to take smelt, spear fish, or to take rough fish and minnows using nets, traps, and seines of legal size. Nonresidents may not sell minnows or smelt. The DNR’s Guide to Wisconsin Spearing, Netting, and Bait Harvest Regulations has more information and lists all the regulations. Fishing licenses are sold online at dnr.wi.gov. Groups of disabled persons on fishing excursions conducted by nonprofit organizations may not need fishing licenses. All annual licenses are valid from date of purchase through March 31, 2021.

The DNR advises anglers to measure the length of their fishing pole and use it as a friendly guide to maintain a distance of 6 feet from the nearest angler or passerby. All the waters of the state will be open to free fishing; however, all usual regulations will be in force.
