“In the days before Internet was found in almost every home, we would begin the search for the perfect home by checking the MLS (Multiple Listing Service) book that provided information on homes currently up for sale and listed with realtors,” Kroupa said. “This heavy book was published every two weeks to keep the realtors up to date with the homes that were on the market. “When I would find homes that I thought the customer would be interested in visiting, I would carry the large book over to the copier and make copies of the listings that seemed relevant for that customer. Then I would enlarge them so they were easier to see and share them with the prospective buyer,” said Kroupa. “We would make appointments to go and walk through the houses that interested them after they had time to peruse the listings.”

boat to them. They go to the boat and you don’t have to be there while they complete their tasks. The women use an appointment system, so boat owners know when they will be arriving to begin work. Owners may stay or take care of any other business while they are cleaning the boat. When you take friends out on the boat you will be proud of the way it looks, just like it arrived from the dealer when first purchased. Price and Zugay have similar backgrounds. They attended the same high school although Price was a senior when Zugay was starting as a freshman. They both have worked for Disney World in Florida although again at different times and in different jobs. Zugay worked with character representations while Price served
as a lifeguard on Blizzard Beach. Each of them was in Florida for about 6 to 8 months per year. Strong work ethic Both women said working at Disney really reinforced their work ethic. They also have each worked at Lake Lawn Resort on the golf course although again at different times. And Price has also worked for a local boat company. They have both been trained in boat detailing. Price is enrolled in flight school at Gateway Technical College in Kenosha. “Flight work is a family tradition,” she said. “I will be the third generation pilot in my family when I finish.” Her mother was a pilot for United Airlines, her father was a pilot while he was in the military.
Her grandfather was also a pilot while her grandmother served as a flight attendant. “My parents actually met at Gateway while attending the same program I am currently enrolled in,” Price added. Perhaps one day you may run across her as you board your flight as she announces her presence at the controls to the passengers. The Barnacle Babes Detailing serves its customers from April 1 through Oct. 30. Prospective customers may call or email to make an appointment for detailing. Sellers worry about someone ill coming into their home, while buyers worry about picking up illness in the home. “To protect the sellers, we screen the prospective buyers with a five-question screening tool to determine if they are ill or have been exposed to anyone with a serious contagious illness such as coronavirus. If they don’t pass the screening we do not schedule a tour for them at that time,” Kroupa said. “When we do arrange to schedule a tour, we advise them not to touch anything in the house.” They also require wearing masks and gloves while in the house both for the homeowner’s protection and their own. Only the couple who are interested in purchasing the home may make a visit. Children and other family members or friends may not join in the tour.

Often there are only three or four properties that may fit the buyers’ needs.” Houses in this price range do not remain on the market for long. Usually there are offers within a week, according to Kroupa. So he advises prospective buyers to put in an offer as soon as possible if they are serious about purchasing a home they have seen. If they wait too long it most likely will not be available.

The appeal of condos While Lauderdale Lakes is more oriented to singlefamily homes, other lake communities in the Southern Lakes area have a high number of condominium complexes. Fontana, Lake Geneva, and Williams Bay on Geneva Lake and Geneva National on Lake Como offer a large number of condominiums perfect for vacation use. The purchase of a condominium rather than a single-family home, especially for a vacation getaway, provides more time to enjoy your vacation
without the burden of lawn care and other homeowner’s chores. The condo may also have additional amenities, such as an exercise room and a pool, but you pay for them through the monthly homeowners association fees. These fees pay for the amenities and outdoor maintenance that they provide. The cost of the HOA fees needs to be considered as part of the monthly cost of the condo. When purchasing a summer vacation home consider the distance from your permanent residence to the vacation home. Is it a reasonable distance of an hour or two from your home so that you can come up for weekends or a few days at a time? If it is a greater distance, your use may be more limited. How often will you make the trip each summer?
Things to consider
If you’re ready to start the search for that new home there are things you need to do before you contact your real estate agent. Give some thought to the type of home that you are seeking. Will a single family home or a condominium best meet your needs? Are you looking for a large home with many bedrooms and bathrooms or something small with only one or two bedrooms? Give some thought to the area you are considering for your purchase. Find a recommended agent who has experience in the targeted area. A knowledgeable agent will be able to answer your questions about the area and make choosing the home of your dreams an easy choice. Most important is to get pre-approved by your mortgage lender before you
begin to look at homes. You may find that the amount of mortgage that you are able to qualify for is more or less than what you may have imagined. By having a preapproval there is no worry that someone else will come in with a pre-approval and bump your offer. This is a great time to purchase new property as mortgage interest rates are still hovering near historically low levels. If you are not certain about purchasing a summer home at this time, it may be a good choice to rent a place this year and see how the location and space work for you. Strawberries, so full of flavor, are only ripe for a few weeks in this area – usually beginning around the second week of June and continuing for approximately three weeks. While strawberries may be found in grocery stores yearround they are not the same as the sun-ripened berries grown in Wisconsin soil then picked fresh from the plant on its way to your table. Berries picked at the peak of ripeness have a very different taste from those picked green and stored in a warehouse or transported across the United States or imported from out of the country. While Steve and Judy Jacobson, owners of the Apple Barn near Elkhorn, have long been known for their many varieties of apples, the apples are not the only crop grown on the Jacobson farm. They are a full working farm and along with their apples, grow a large variety of crops including strawberries. “We began growing strawberries in the late ’80s or early ’90s,” Judy Jacobson said. “We took a little break from the strawberry fields when the kids were little, then began to grow the strawberries again. Today we have about six acres of strawberries.”

At this time of year, we begin to see them, red luscious strawberries appearing at farm stands and grocery stores in the area. Growing in the fields, spots of red berries can be seen peeking out from the green foliage of strawberry plants...
always a fun way to spend a weekend day with parents and children working together but it is hard work. Perhaps it is harder for the adults than for the children. The children, like the plants, are closer to the ground. After a day of stooping to pick the strawberries many adults feel the aches in their muscles from all that bending. Before heading out into the fields remember to apply sunscreen if it is a sunny day. Bug spray is also a good idea.
If you are looking for some new ways to serve strawberries try one of these recipes from the Wisconsin Berry Growers Association. Start with a light and healthy salad that includes the taste of strawberries.
Strawberry Spring Salad - 1 (10 oz) bag of fresh spinach - 3 cups of fresh strawberries, washed and hulled - 1 (11 oz) can of mandarin oranges drained - 3/4 cup of walnut pieces - 1 head of Bibb lettuce or 1/2 head of Boston lettuce - 1 medium sweet onion sliced thin Wash spinach and lettuce, pat dry. Tear into bite sized pieces and place in salad bowl. Reserve 6-8 whole strawberries for garnish and cut remaining berries in half and add to bowl. Add drained oranges and sliced onion. Toss gently, cover with plastic wrap, and refrigerate until serving time. Add salad dressing of choice. Poppy seed dressing is recommended. Garnish with whole berries and walnuts. After this healthy and light lunch it is time for a decadent dessert. Here are two:
Chocolate-dipped Strawberries - 1 quart fresh strawberries - 4 oz semi-sweet chocolate Choose berries with fresh green stems. Rinse in cold water and pat dry with paper towel. Melt chocolate in double boiler over very hot water. Working quickly, pick up a berry by the stem and dip in chocolate covering it about 2/3 of the way. Remove excess chocolate. Place on wax paper and chill until chocolate is set. Serve at room temperature.
Some tips for picking
The Wisconsin Berry Growers Association offers some tips for picking your own strawberries. They suggest that the best time for picking is early in the morning when the berries are still cool, before the sun’s heat has softened them. If early morning doesn’t work for you, try early evening after the sun has started to set. Picking strawberries is easy but there is a technique that needs to be used to be certain that when the berry is picked the stem and the hull remain attached. Use two hands to pick; one hand needs to hold the branch, which supports several berries. The trick to a successful strawberry-picking outing is getting more berries in the basket than in the mouths of certain members of the picking party.
They do not recommend washing them until ready to eat. The washing process is simple. Rinse with cool, fresh water. Never soak them in water or they will become soggy. And never, according to the Wisconsin Berry Growers Association, use a “produce wash” on them. Once washed, remove the stem and hull and they are ready to be served. If there are strawberries left, they can be preserved in the refrigerator by adding a little sugar or some orange or lemon juice to them. Or consider adding some liqueur to the berries such as Grand Marnier or Cointreau and a little whipped cream and you have a tasty dessert, for the adults. Strawberries may be frozen whole, halved, sliced, chopped or pureed. Freeze firm and well-shaped berries whole. Mash or puree the softer fruit and freeze for making jams or sauces. More than just berries
While some come to the Apple Barn to pick strawberries, others come to shop in their Country Store, Bakery and Winery. Here they can purchase the fresh strawberries that have been picked by the Jacobson family and their staff. They also can shop the store for interesting items made with the fresh strawberries. “Our strawberry donuts are a favorite and are made using fresh crushed strawberries giving them a true strawberry flavor,” Jacobson said. “The freshly baked strawberry pies also are customer favorites and sell out quickly. If you have your heart set on one, it is a good idea to order it ahead of time. That way it will be waiting for you when you come in.” In addition to pies and donuts there are also a variety of other strawberry items, such as strawberry syrup,
- 1 pkg of devil’s food cake mix - 1 can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk - 1 cup of cold water - 1 pkg (3.4 oz) instant vanilla pudding - 2 cups whipping cream, whipped - 2 Tbs orange juice - 4 cups fresh strawberries chopped Prepare cake mix according to package directions. Pour into greased 15x10x1” baking pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes. Cool completely on wire rack. Crumble enough cake to make 8 cups. Set aside. In a mixing bowl combine milk and water until smooth. Add pudding mix and beat on low speed for 2 minutes until slightly thickened. Fold in whipped cream. To assemble spread 2-1/2 cups of pudding mix in a glass bowl. Top with 1/2 of crumbled cake and sprinkle with 1 Tbs of orange juice. Arrange half of berries over cake. Repeat pudding and cake layers and sprinkle with remaining orange juice. Top with remaining pudding and spoon rest of berries around edge of bowl. Cover and refrigerate until serving. Makes 12 to 16 servings.
strawberry rhubarb jams and even strawberry wine. In 2004 the Jacobsons added wine to the products they produce. Wine making began as a hobby for Steve Jacobson in the 1990s when his mother gave him a home wine making kit as a gift. As he experimented with the wine making he began to use other fruits, many grown on the farm, instead of grapes. After receiving approval from the State of Wisconsin he, along with winemaker Jake Drefs began to produce various wines for sale at the Apple Barn. Wine making went from a hobby to an addition to the Apple Barn’s business and his wines began to win awards in competition. There are two different wines that use strawberries. The strawberry Jewel wine is a semi-sweet wine that was the winner of the best fruit wine in the 2014 Mid-American Wine Competition. A second wine that incorporates strawberries is The Blush, which is made from a combination of apples, pears and strawberries and has a unique flavor. It’s perfect for the strawberry lover.
Picking in the new normal
In past years, strawberry time was a happy time for families as they came out to the Apple Barn to spend time
together picking strawberries. There would be different festivals and specials on weekends. Father’s Day was one of the occasions that would bring visitors out. This year the coronavirus pandemic has changed all that as everyone has spent time at home in an attempt to slow the spread of this virus. The Jacobsons were formalizing their procedures for picking as this story went to press. “At this time we aren’t sure how we are going to handle both the berry picking and even the sales of berries that have been picked,” Judy Jacobson said. “With social distancing required we will have to wait and see what instructions come from Gov. (Tony) Evers about how to enjoy our summer activities without endangering others.” They had not scheduled any activities for the strawberry picking season but will post them on the Apple Barn Facebook page and on their website when the information becomes available. am Veith, with a rod and reel in his hands, finds fishing as a form of therapy and a way to explore nature. Veith, of Salem, discovers his tranquil moments mostly on the waters of Geneva and Delavan lakes. “Whenever life gets tough, just being on the water and getting outdoors is my kind of therapy,” said Veith. “It is important for me to get out enjoy nature. Being on the water is just my favorite thing.” Veith has also ventured out on Eagle Lake in Racine County along with many lakes in Kenosha County, including Silver and Paddock lakes. Additionally, when visiting his in-laws in Illinois, he typically jumps aboard a boat on the Chain O’Lakes. “I don’t really discriminate, I will fish up in Eagle Lake in Racine County once in awhile, I will fish in Twin Lakes,” he said. “If there is a good opportunity to get out for an hour or two, I just stay really close to home like Silver Lake or Paddock Lake.”
Promoting social distancing Veith said he has remained within a half hour of his residence because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic has prompted health officials to urge people to maintain social distancing. The Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation, a national nonprofit organization with a mission to increase participation in fishing, indicates fishing is an ideal activity because 6-foot social distancing guidelines is already happening. Stephanie Vatalaro, senior vice president for marketing and communications of the foundation, outlined many reasons fishing is a natural fit for social distancing to the Associated Press. “You don’t want to be close,”
Vatalaro said. “You’re going to tangle your lines, get your equipment mixed up. Fishing is a sport that lends itself to social distancing for sure.” The Associated Press says the Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation’s website, takemefishing.org, has seen a 15% increase in traffic over the past month. Its website offers an interactive map showing the status, and any restrictions, in every state during the COVID-19 pandemic. “We absolutely believe fishing, if you can do it right now, it’s great for mental health, stress relief, connecting with your family, creating memories, but health and safety is No. 1,” Vatalaro said. “One of the messages we’ll hold onto is maybe find a place you haven’t been to before, maybe close to home so you’re not in the public.” For Veith, using lakes closer to his home brings benefits such as learning new features of each body of water, while staying safe. “Right now, with corona, it is just kind of crazy so I am trying to stay within a half hour from my house,” he said. “I am not trying to go too far. It is usually an opportunity to learn these local lakes a little bit better.” Paul Vollmer, 36, a lifelong Mukwonago resident, has been fishing at nearby waterways since he was a child. He, like Veith, finds fishing relaxing and often visits the Fox River and Tichigan Lake. “I enjoy fishing the Fox River and Tichigan Lake because of the multiple species of fish in the lake and it is a great hatchery for fish,” he said, noting he also uses Pewaukee Lake for muskies and big bass. While Vollmer describes himself as a recreational fisherman, he has participated in some area tournaments, primarily focusing on musky and bass. “It is relaxing and a fun sport,” Vollmer said. Vollmer concurred with Vatalaro’s statement about fishing as an activity promoting social distancing.

Veith, 35, a commercial insurance broker, recently decided to share his passion for fishing through a relatively new program called “Fun Fishing Guide Service.” The fishing guide service, he said, primarily looks to serve veterans and donate fishing trips to help charities with fundraising. “It is just a part-time thing for me. It is not something I am trying to make a ton of money on. It is just something I am doing to give back to veterans,” he said. “I donate some trips to charities to help them raise money.” While the service is not listed as a non-profit organization, at least not yet, Veith said it has worked to support many other charities. With the unemployment rate in the United States reportedly hovering around 24% and the economy cratering because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the housing market has not seen prices drop as might be expected in a recession. “Contrary to what I am sure people are thinking with the housing market with the virus that things would have come to a slow down and switched from a sellers’ market to a buyers’ markets, we’re not seeing that come to fruition,” Wisconsin Realtors’ Association Chairman of the Board Steve Beers said. He added that might change because the housing market numbers are tracked 30 to 60 days after the fact. “We’re still closing deals that were under contract before the virus,” he explained. “So it’s a little early to tell, but so far, we haven’t seen prices drop.” What they have seen drop, is the inventory of homes to sell, Beers said. “Not many new homes are coming into the market or being built,” he said. “It’s tightening the inventories and driving up the price by 9.7 to 10% over the last 12 months. In terms of activity, it’s really strong, with existing home sales in April state-wide up over 7% compared to last year.” Beers said the most active market was in the range of houses priced at $375,000 and lower and with inventories down, he figured there was less than a 60-day supply of houses and in some markets a 30- to 45-day supply. “It will be interesting to see the May numbers,” Beers said. “You’ve seen listings retracting in the southeastern market. In our area, those listing coming in are down 25 to 35% for the last two months. So you can just see by that what’s going to happen for the demand side, it’s going to drive up the prices.”

Beers said that not only is the coronavirus having people stay where they are and discouraging putting a home on the market right now, the lower numbers of new construction homes is pinching the market. “According to the Home Builders Association, every year, we’re still producing new homes at half the rate prior to the Great Recession,” Beers said. One of the reasons for that, he explained, is the cost of developing land for subdivisions has skyrocketed in the last 10 years. “The land has run out and it’s expensive and time consuming to build a new subdivision,” he said. “It can take 2 to 2-1/2 years to get a subdivision done. Some of that needs to change and our local communities should look at the zoning and fees required to help make it affordable for buyers.” Beers said it costs roughly $84,000 to develop a single lot for new-home construction, according to Wisconsin Builders Association. “It’s a lot of money,” he said. “It’s a huge amount of money that the consumers are paying for. It needs to change.”
