Fish for free June 1 and 2 Take advantage of Wisconsin’s Free Fishing Weekend, June 1 and 2, to introduce kids to fishing. All the waters of the state are open; however, all usual regulations are in force. Wisconsin residents and visitors can fish anywhere for free in Wisconsin. No license is needed – this includes inland trout and Great Lakes trout and salmon fishing. No fishing gear? No problem. The Wisconsin of Natural Resources will have free fishing equipment for loan at more than 50 sites, DNR offices and partner organizations. For more information, visit dnr. wi.gov.
Fishing provides a great way for parents to bond with their children in the great outdoors. The value of first impressions has been welldocumented, and parents who want their kids to inherit a love of fishing can take the following factors into consideration so their youngsters’ first fishing trips are successful.
Local programs
Fishing need not be an expensive hobby, but the costs can add up. Parents who are not sure if their kids will embrace fishing should look into local programs. Many towns, especially those with reputations for fishing, host free family fishing events. These events give parents an opportunity to see if their kids enjoy fishing before they start buying them gear.
Starting simple
Any fisherman would love to snag a trophy fish such as a largemouth bass on his or her first trip. And while that’s possible, it’s unlikely, especially for youngsters. Such fish tend to be difficult to catch, even for seasoned fishermen. When taking kids fishing for the first time, fish for something that’s somewhat simple to catch and capable of being caught throughout the day. If you aren’t familiar with your local rivers
or lakes, visit a local outdoors store and ask for advice about which local bodies of water are home to fish that kids might be able to snag. Though it’s not imperative that kids catch a fish on their first trip, doing so might make them more enthusiastic about their next trip.
Having fun
Don’t make the day all about catching fish, as even the most seasoned fishermen have their off days when nothing is biting. If the focus is on catching fish, kids might grow discouraged and not want to come back if they don’t catch anything on their first trip. Focus on the fun everyone is having rather than the fish they are (or aren’t) catching. Some youngsters might just be thrilled to spend a day out on the water with their parents. Encourage that enthusiasm and kids are more likely to remember their first fishing trips fondly.

Recreational boating reaches its peak when the weather warms up and people take to waterways in droves. Spending a day on the water enjoying the scenery or trying your luck at fishing are popular pastimes. Following proper boating practices and etiquette can protect everyone onboard. Although ensuring passenger safety should be a priority, safeguarding against environmental impacts while boating also should be a concern. Marinas and various marine areas can become contaminated with pollutants generated from boating activities. Boat cleaning, fueling and marine head discharge are just a few of the pollutants that can find their ways into the water. A past study in the marine reserve of Cape Creus in the Mediterranean Sea found that boat anchoring also is a considerable threat to marine habitats, as vulnerable ecologies can be
damaged by anchors. Although there are regulations in place to protect marine life and ecosystems, these rules aren’t always adhered to. Recreational boaters can do their part to keep oceans, bays, rivers, and lakes pristine by adhering to some sound advice.

Boating is a safe and fun activity when boaters maintain their boats and take steps to protect themselves from dangers like carbon monoxide.
Prevent carbon monoxide poisoning on your boat

Irritated eyes, headache, nausea, weakness, and dizziness are some of the early symptoms of CO poisoning. These are easily and often mistaken as seasickness when on a boat. Any of the aforementioned symptoms should be addressed immediately. People experiencing these symptoms should be moved to a fresh air environment, observed and given oxygen, if necessary. Seek medical help and shut off potential sources of CO, if possible. Do not write these

The USCG recommends all boaters learn where and how CO can accumulate on their boats. Maintain fresh air circulation throughout the boat at all times, running exhaust blowers whenever the generator is operating. When hosting others on their boats, boaters should make sure everyone steers clear of engine and generator exhaust outlets. Boaters and their guests should never sit, teak surf or hang on the back deck or swim platform while engines are running. The USCG notes that the presence of exhaust fumes means CO is present, too. Boating is a rewarding hobby that allows people to spend ample time on the water enjoying the great outdoors. Fresh air and boating might go hand in hand, but a danger may be lurking in the air on or around boats that can put boaters’ health in jeopardy. According to the U.S. Coast Guard, carbon monoxide, or CO, can accumulate anywhere in or around a boat. Inadequately ventilated canvas enclosures and blocked exhaust outlets are just two places where CO can accumulate. Exhaust also can get trapped in enclosed places, potentially leading to the accumulation of CO. Fortunately, the USCG notes that CO poisoning is entirely preventable. Routine maintenance and attentive boat ownership can protect boaters and their passengers from the threat posed by CO poisoning.

Few things can beat a relaxing evening spent in the yard gathered around the grill in the company of friends and family. Cooking food over an open fire dates back centuries. Despite the various modern means of cooking food, the combination of a metal grill and some flames remains one of the more tasty ways to prepare meals. Grilling is a relatively easy concept to master, but environmentalists may question if firing up the barbecue is a smart choice. Rest assured that while the environmental impact of grilling is negligible, there still are ways to make it even more eco-friendly. Grilling purists may prefer charcoal to gas, feeling charcoal more effectively produces that familiar smoky flavor, but environmental experts say that gas grills may be better for the environment. A study by the Oak Ridge National Laboratory for the Department of Energy found that gas grills generate 5.6 pounds of carbon dioxide per hour, while charcoal grills produce 11 pounds per hour. Furthermore, the charcoal briquettes used on many grills are made from more than just coal. They may contain wood byproducts, starch, chemical additives, and lighter fluid. For those who insist on charcoal, use natural lump charcoal, which is made from coal and little else. Another step to take is to invest in a quality grill. Replacing a cheap grill every few years can be harmful to the environment, especially when you consider how many components go into the construction of a grill and the packaging required for shipping long distances. Quality products last longer, and that durability benefits the planet. In addition to buying a better grill, you must take good care of the grill and maintain it so it works optimally. In certain ways, grilling is already an ecofriendly activity, as it doesn’t lend well to prepackaged foods and it enables you to turn off the stove while reducing your electricity consumption. In some instances, you may not even need to fire up the barbecue at all. If you’re spending the evening by a chiminea or a fire pit, you can skewer a couple of hot dogs and cook them right over the flames. Do not offset the benefits of grilling by creating a bigger environmental hazard in meal preparation and service. Minimize the use of disposable plates, napkins, cups, and plastic cutlery at your backyard event. Rather than single-serve cans of soda or iced tea, use large pitchers or bulk-sized containers. Insist guests discard all recyclable materials in the proper

Waterford’s Bowfishing Bash set for June 1
The 2019 Bowfishing Bash will be at Waterford’s Village Hall Park from 3 to 8 p.m. Saturday, June 1. Admission and all activities are free. Food and drink will be available for purchase.
