Some type of lightweight, flexible foot protection is recommended. This will help reduce possible injury, should you step on sharp underwater objects. • Know your vessel’s capacity – don’t overload. • Stay alert and be aware of your surroundings. Constantly look in all directions for skiers, divers, swimmers and other boats or watercraft. • Keep a safe distance! Avoid wake jumping, splashing and passing close to any other vessels. • Know the waters you will be operating in and observe all applicable federal, state and local boating laws. • Know the weather conditions – tune into your local forecast. • Stay clear of all restricted areas. • Obey ALL posted signs, such as “No Wake,” “Right of Way,” “Idle” and other navigation signs. • Never consume alcohol or drugs before or while operating a watercraft or boat. • All operators must be of legal age to operate the craft you will be riding. • BRP recommends a minimum operator of 16 years of age to ride. • Always operate at a safe speed and be prepared to stop or alter course in emergencies. Ride within your limits, and allow sufficient distance to stop. • Whether you’re heading in or out, always maintain a slow speed until you’re in a clear area, away from shore. • Know and understand right-of-way rules. • Remember you need throttle power to steer. • Stay in sight of shore, but avoid operating too close to residential and congested areas. As fishing activity ramps up in waters with early season opportunities and general inland season fishing open, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources reminds anglers that a few extra minutes spent emptying live wells and cleaning plant debris from anchors and trailers plays a critical role in preventing the spread of aquatic invasive species. DNR research covering 1,000 state lakes released in October 2016 shows the spread of aquatic invasive species has not increased, as would be predicted, but rather has remained stable - an indicator that prevention efforts may be playing a role. The prohibited area includes Lake Michigan, Lake Superior, the Winnebago system, the Mississippi River, the Wisconsin River up to the Prairie de Sac Dam and all waters connected to these waters up to the first barrier impassable to fish. Anglers fishing the lower Fox River and Lake Winnebago system are again being asked for special help to guard against further spread of the round goby. Round gobies can survive even in poor quality water, spawn multiple times per season and displace native fish by eating their eggs and young, taking over optimal habitat. Gobies have become common in some areas of the state such as Lake Michigan and Green Bay but remain on the Chapter NR 40 list as a restricted invasive species. It is illegal to possess, transport, transfer or introduce live gobies, including using them as bait. While there is no evidence that gobies have reached Lake Winnebago, DNR continues to encourage Winnebago area anglers to report any goby catches through an online survey tool to help determine the extent of gobies in the region and develop a management strategy. The online tool also allows anglers to upload photos of suspected gobies for positive identification. Anglers who catch gobies on Lake Winnebago, other parts of the Winnebago System or the lower Fox River below the Neenah and Menasha dams during the 2017 fishing season are encouraged to kill the fish by putting them on ice and bringing them to the DNR Oshkosh office, 625 E. County Road Y, Suite 700, Oshkosh, Wis., 54901-9731. The office is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Anglers also may call (920) 424-7880 to report gobies. Other tips to prevent the spread of AIS include bringing your day’s catch home on ice rather than transporting live fish in water. And, it’s important to check, clean and/ or drain trailers, live wells and anchors to avoid giving other types of unwanted aquatic hitchhikers a lift. A lush lawn and beautiful landscape are on virtually every homeowner’s wish list, but a lack of time and knowledge commonly keep people from effectively caring for their own lawns. Americans spend an average of just 20 minutes a day on lawn care, according to the American Time Use Survey. What’s more, many homeowners don’t know how to properly care for their lawn and landscape, a Harris Poll reveals. Conducted on behalf of the National Association of Landscape Professionals, the survey found that while nearly seven in 10 Americans said their lawn could be better, nearly one in three didn’t know how often to water their lawns and nearly a third admitted to not knowing how to grow a healthy lawn. “A healthy lawn isn’t just for cosmetic appeal,” says Missy Henriksen, vice president of public affairs for NALP. “Properly maintained lawns can not only elevate home value but also reduce exposure to weedinduced allergies and help purify the air in communities.” Of the 94 percent of people with landscaping around their homes, 44 percent hired professionals to help over the past year. NALP offers some advice for getting the most for your money when you work with a lawn care professional: • Put some thought and research into the hiring process. When you’re interviewing companies, find out how long they’ve been in business and the experience level of staff. Before sending kids out to play, however, make sure they’re wearing shoes to protect from cuts, scrapes and splinters, and sunscreen to protect against sunburns and harmful ultraviolet rays.
PLAYGROUND 101 • Teach children that pushing and shoving on the playground can result in accidents and injuries. • Remind kids to go down the slide one at a time and to wait until the slide is completely clear before taking their turn. Teach them to always sit facing forward with their legs straight in front of them and to never slide down headfirst. • Remind children to swing sitting down, to wait until the swing stops before getting off and to be careful when walking in front of moving swings.

Even among the boat lovers there is a great diversity in the types of watercraft that are enjoyed. The boat rental marinas answer those desires. Customers wait excitedly for the arrival of their boat anticipating the fun of an hour or several hours on the water. Employees, mostly of college age, carefully prepare each boat for its delivery to the customer. They diligently explain the workings of the boat and give safety instructions. Finally they pilot the boats out to the more open

Kevin McEwen and his family were piling into a pontoon boat with towels, a massive picnic lunch, sunscreen, and a variety of other items for their day on the lake. The family members, from St. Louis, are frequent boaters. “We have rented boats in many places in the country, but this is our favorite spot,” Kevin said. “The boats are always very clean and mechanically perfect. And the lake, too, is perfect.” Watching the activity on the lake reveals a variety of boats and other watercraft to draw people out on the water – from those propelled by muscle power to those using motors and jets. Here are a few of the popular rental choices in the area. Kayaking is a favorite summer activity that appeals to young children, teenagers and their parents. A kayak is a self-propelled boat similar to a canoe. It differs from the canoe in that the paddler sits into the boat with legs extended forward and instead of the type of oar used in a canoe, a two bladed paddle is used. Newer forms of kayaks include models where one sits on top instead of into the kayak. Inflatable kayaks are also becoming popular and easily transported as they can be deflated for the ride home. Kayaking is easily learned and an enjoyable way to spend time on the water. Stand up paddle boarding, known as SUP, is a relatively new way to enjoy the water. Popular with the millennials, stand up paddle boarding requires a paddleboard and a long handled oar. One stands on the paddleboard and paddles across the lake. Core strength is needed to maintain balance, perhaps that is why it is more popular with those from teen years through their 30s who tend to be in good physical shape. Moving on to powered boats, a popular choice is the waverunner. Envision the waverunner as the motorcycle of boating. It is small, easily maneuverable, and can move quickly through the water. The waverunner holds one or two persons. It is recommended by some of the marinas as an ideal craft for first-time riders or for those who enjoy a less strenuous riding experience. Wave runners can reach speeds of 40 mph or more depending on the engine. Interested in spending a leisurely day on the lake? Relaxing on a pontoon boat with a group of friends while you circle the lake is a favorite way to see the lake and the shore. Bring a picnic lunch aboard and spend the day. Tubing can be done off the back of many pontoon boats. Pontoons are favorites for families, and small groups. Most pontoons can hold 10 to 12 persons. Speedboats offer a chance to skim across the water with the wind blowing across your face. Capable of pulling a tube or water skier, a speedboat will provide an exciting day on the lake.
