One of the few original American-made industries – 95 percent of boats sold in the United States are made in the United States – recreational boating is seeing some of its healthiest gains in nearly a decade, a trajectory the NMMA expects to continue through 2018, the release stated. “With the U.S. boating industry having one of its strongest years in the last decade in 2016, and manufacturers saying, ‘we’re back!’ it’s likely we will reflect on this period as a golden age for our economy and our industry,” NMMA President Thom Dammrich stated in the release. “Economic indicators are working in the industry’s favor – a continuously improving housing market, strong consumer confidence, growing disposable income and consumer spending, and low interest rates all contribute to a healthy recreational boating market. “Looking ahead, 2017 is likely to bring new dollar and unit sales gains on par with or better than 2016, and this trend will likely continue through 2018.” For more information, visit www.nmma.org.

The Boathouse of Lauderdale Lakes has a longstanding history in the area and is in the midst of its best early season on record. “This marina has been in business well over 50 years. It started as a small, outboard dealer and then in the ’80s and ’90s, when inboards became more popular, those were added to our mix along with pontoons,” Travis Quass, a salesman at The Boathouse, said. “We’re in our best early season ever right now. We thought we had done that two years ago but are topping that season,” he added. Formerly known as Lauderdale Lakes Marina, it became The Boathouse of Lauderdale Lakes seven years ago when Kevin and Andy Code bought the business. “We were the second store in The Boathouse
group but now there are seven. Kevin and Andy are local, too, in that they’ve had lake homes here for years,” Quass said. The marina in Lauderdale Lakes is the No. 1 inboard dealer in the Midwest, according to Jackie Rumer, the office manager. “We’ve also been in the Top 100 dealer list in Boating Industry magazine for the past two years,” Rumer said. The Boathouse, which is just a few miles north of Elkhorn, has grown in recent years into a full-service marina, from selling boats – new and used – and shore stations and lifts, to indoor/outdoor storage, and a pier division that installs and takes out piers as well as building new ones, fabricated along with custom wood docks. “We also offer in and out service for people who don’t have a dock. Their boat stays here and when they need it we put it in the water and they take off from here. When they’re done, we take it out and park it again,” Quass said. He said the service department deserves credit for the marina’s growth in recent years. “We’re certified to service all motors and good service leads to future sales and referrals. It’s really grown in the past 10 to 12 years,” Quass said. “The goal is to service everything people need on the water – boats, piers and related equipment, and be a one-stop shop. We already offer all of that but are working to build on the success we’ve had to this point,” he said. In addition to a showroom, The Boathouse features a fully stocked ship store that offers cleaners, dock line, anchors and general safety items for those who spend time on the water. “There’s also the Pro Shop, which features all styles of boards – paddle, wake and surf – along with skis, tubes and other items. All of the items in there are supplied by The Board
Shop out of Lake Geneva,” Rumer said. To make things even easier on boaters, especially those who want to spend some long days on the lake, the marina has a gas dock that is fully staffed by an attendant in the summer.
Time to buy a boat?
The Boathouse at Lauderdale Lakes offers a full line of boats for a wide range of needs and budgets. Quass said those looking for a pontoon should look no further than the Bennington, the No. 1 pontoon model, ranging in price from $20,000 to $150,000. In the ski and wakeboard boat category, the marina sells Nautique, Supra and Moomba, with prices ranging from $55,000 to $200,000. The runabout brand they sell is Crownline, while Hurricane is the deck boat of choice. Those fall into the $30,000 to $80,000 range. At one time considered a little more than a floating patio, pontoon boats have become a hot item in the marine industry. Prized for their versatility, these boats are used for more than sunset cocktail cruises these days. Many seek them for a full range of recreation uses, including fishing, skiing and tubing. “Pontoons have become extremely popular. They’ve upgraded in recent years,” said Courtney Blackwell, the sales coordinator at Gage Marine. “More recently, we have sold more but we’ve always sold a lot.” Just like many businesses, Gage Marine had to tread through the Great Recession. However, just like many other marine businesses, Gage Marine has seen a rebound. And pontoon boats are leading the rebound. Blackwell has worked with the company for four years, and she has seen the success firsthand. “Sales have gone up dramatically. Every year it has been better and better,” Blackwell said. Gage Marine sees only the same for the foreseeable future. “I think every year we have continued to grow the amount of sales. I think people are not getting out of boating. When things went down, boating wasn’t as much of a priority, but that has certainly been changing,” Blackwell said. “Many customers have multiple boats, according to what their families need.” That bodes well for Gage, which has a long history in the area. The business dates to 1873 when it was started in Lake Geneva with the launch of the original Lady of the Lake excursion boat, according to the Gage Marine website. “Prior to the road system making its way around the lake, our excursion boats were the best way for visitors and lakefront homeowners to get to various resorts and homes,” the website says. In 1958, the Gage family bought the business. Shortly after, the family started building the GageHacker, a wooden runabout that was produced from 1961 to 1969. The boat is still prized as a classic. Gage Marine sells products from companies such as MasterCraft, Regal Valanti and Bennington. Gage Marine provides its services for many throughout the Southern Lakes region, particularly Delavan, Como, Lake Geneva and Williams Bay and other Geneva Lake communities. Tichigan Lake to host annual The second annual Tichigan Lake Treasure Hunt begins at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 5. Boats will compete for prizes in a family friendly scavenger hunt that brings local residents, businesses, and organizations together for a funfilled day. Tammie and Brandon Begotka created the event last year out of love of the lake and the community. The Begotkas moved to Waterford seven years ago and say in that time they developed
a deep appreciation for the uniqueness of the waterway, the friendliness of the residents and the willingness of local businesses and organizations to invest in the community. They wanted to create a family friendly event that would bring all of those elements together and found a successful and fun way to do it with the Tichigan Lake Treasure Hunt. “Last year’s event was a huge success thanks to the participants and sponsors,” Tammie Begotka said. “There were many examples of creative
ways to find the items on the list, but two really stood out. One of the items to complete was, ‘Take a picture of a person catching a fish.’ One team took a picture of someone ‘catching’ a minnow from the live bait tanks at River City Marina and another took a picture of a team member catching a frozen bag of fish sticks!” The Begotkas are still looking for sponsors for the event and registration is limited. 4 easy ways to make your yard an outdoor oasis Summer is when your backyard takes center stage. As warm weather arrives, it’s time to head outdoors and create a beautiful and lush outdoor space that you can enjoy all season. “It’s no secret that backyards are the best place to spend time with family and friends in the summer months,” says Chris Lambton, yard and garden expert for Fiskars. Lambton offers his tips and tools to help your yard flourish this season: MAINTAIN PROPER LAWN HEIGHT The optimal grass height for a healthy lawn changes with the time of year. Cut grass shorter in the spring and fall and keep it longer in summer so it won’t dry out. Use a reel mower that allows you to easily adjust the cut height for the season. In addition to making your lawn look its best, pushing a reel mower provides an opportunity for exercise and fresh air. ENCOURAGE NEW PLANT GROWTH Pruning and deadheading are necessary for plant health as they encourage new growth. Pruning is great for keeping tall plants within bounds, stimulating branch growth and blooms and tightening up plants that get lanky throughout the season, including perennials and shrubs.
