Think of owning a boat like it was owning your own personal never-ending vacation. Boating is more affordable than you think. You might be wondering, if being a boater is so great, wouldn’t everyone out there already own a boat of their own? Well, if all those people perpetually stuck on dry land knew how great boating was, they probably would. Then, of course, there is the financial end of things. Hopefully you’ve already checked out

But with your own boat you won’t be going back to the same place over and over again, and instead can visit virtually limitless lakes, rivers and bays. • You can enjoy various watersports; go boat camping; try your hand at freshwater fishing or saltwater fishing and take day cruises. The list of all the fun activities you can enjoy on each and every mini-vacation never ends—and you can find more activities to do onboard by reading 10 Fun Things You Can Do on a Boat. You’ll never be shoe-horned into a campsite surrounded by crowds of other people, and you’ll be miles away from noisy hotel rooms.
Long-term investment
Another factor to keep in mind is how many days do you think you might use your boat? Those trips to the Bahamas ended up costing you about $714 per day. But you’re free to use your boat whenever you’d like, and if you use it just 30 times a year the cost per day of fun is less than half that, at $333. Or, it would be if your boat merely disappeared – poof! – like those vacations do. But since you own your boat you eventually gain back its resale value. As a general rule of thumb (*note that resale value on used boats can vary quite a bit depending on their condition and location) a boat depreciates around 20-percent the year it’s sold, then about 10-percent a year beyond that. Crunch the math and you’ll find that the $50,000 boat should still be worth something like $26,244 five years after you bought it. Boating is a great family activity as kids (and grownups) of all ages enjoy getting out on the water. DISCOVER BOATING PHOTO Lake Living
Let’s play it safe, and say the boat’s value is half its original cost ($25,000). When you collect the proceeds from selling it that cost per day of fun also gets halved, which puts the bottom-line number at $166.50 – less than a quarter of the cost of a day vacationing in the islands. So, what other fun experiences could a family of five have, for $166.50 a day? Go golfing? Nope. The average fees of $36 per person at a public course add up to $180. Maybe taking the kids to an amusement park would be fun? For sure, but with an average ticket price of $50 per person plus $10 parking fees, that day at the park will tap you for $260. How about paintball? Not by a longshot, that shakes out to around $55 per person per day or $275 for the entire family. What about taking the gang to a baseball game? At an average cost of $65.06, you’re looking at $325.30. For an NFL game push that up to $150 per person, or $750. Ouch. Those few hours of fun are probably going to cost a whole lot more than an entire monthly payment on that boat, even if you bought it with no money down. Is buying a boat the right option for your family? Of course, we do need to realize that there are other expenses associated with
all of these vacation options and activities. That includes boats, too, and we wouldn’t want anyone to go into the boating experience without a full comprehension of what’s involved financially. But when you break out the calculator, remember that each and every recreational activity we’ve mentioned also has peripheral costs associated with it. And when you get right down to brass tacks, buying a boat isn’t much different from taking the family on a series of vacations, putting in an in-ground pool, buying a timeshare, or making a different sort of land-based recreational purchase like a vehicle or a piece of property. At least, it isn’t from a financial point of view. Because if you want to look at these options from the perspective of which will be the most fun, owning a boat is the winner by a longshot. DISINFECTING THE BOAT Like many solid surfaces, the parts of your boat could temporarily house the COVID-19 virus. As long as you keep boating between you and your family, your boat in and of itself
shouldn’t be any problem. But, what if you want to be extra cautious and disinfect your boat? In that case, go by the Centers for Disease Control recommendations. That means disinfecting surfaces with EPAapproved disinfectants, however, you should remember that some of the approved disinfectants (like bleach or acids) can harm some of the surfaces of a boat. SOCIAL DISTANCING WHILE BOATING Is boating a safe social distancing activity? The short answer is yes, but the long answer is a bit more involved. First and foremost, all the usual rules apply: • Limit the people aboard to those family members you share your home with, period – no guests; • Don’t raft up with other boats or pull up onto a beach close to another boat, as that could put you in close proximity with the occupants; • Be careful to maintain a safe distance from others when doing things like loading up at the marina or fueling the boat; • After doing anything that requires touching an item someone else may have touched, like a marina gate lock or a fuel pump, disinfect by washing your hands or using a hand sanitizer as soon as possible; and • Finally, to maintain the highest level of safety pack your gear and supplies ahead of time and don’t plan to stop at a store on the way to the marina or launch ramp, as you usually might.

Many are asking if they will receive assistance with mechanical issues while boating during the COVID-19 crisis? This is a question that may weigh heavily on a lot of people’s minds, since it’s another way your safety may be impacted out on the water. On-the-water towing assistance from major fleets like TowBoatUS and Sea Tow remain active and able to respond. In addition, search and rescue and emergency personal from the U.S. Coast Guard and most state agencies also remain active. However, because the constantly changing nature of this emergency Discover Boating highly recommends doublechecking on all of the above, before taking out your boat.

On the shore of Burlington’s Browns Lake stands the Waterfront restaurant. It has made its home on the lakefront for 20 years. But the history of this restaurant goes back much farther than the past 20 years. The building and site that is now known as Waterfront, has previously done business as restaurants under some other names. Prior to becoming the Waterfront it was known as Brandy Bay and also as Club 11, according to General Manager Tanya Peterson. “In the early days there were many restaurants along the shore of the lake but today we are the only one left,” Peterson said.
Many of the lakefront properties have been sold over the years and instead of resorts, which had restaurants nearby, they have been replaced by condos. Peterson, who has owned and worked at other restaurants, was hired by owner Michael Hammes to manage the restaurant six years ago and has seen many changes occur during the time she has been at the Waterfront. None of those changes has been as significant as the disruption in normal business brought on by restrictions resulting from the coronavirus pandemic. The restaurant offered curbside pickup on weekends during the state’s stay-at-home order

Warm and welcoming
The restaurant and bar has a warm and welcoming feel typical of lakeside restaurants in Wisconsin. The décor is lake oriented from the horseshoe shaped bar with the canoe hanging overhead to the warm and friendly people sitting at the bar. “And don’t forget the coolest bartender ever,” added Shannon, the self-proclaimed coolest bartender ever, though it seems to be a title most of her customers agree with. The bar is typically alive with local residents and visitors who stop in for a drink with friends or to enjoy a quick lunch or snack. Because of its horseshoe shape it is easy to speak with everyone seated at the bar. Because of the shape, there is a smaller space behind the bar for the bartenders to stand and work. And due to that, there are no beers on tap because there is not enough room for the tappers. But the restaurant does carry a variety of domestic, imported and craft beers. The Waterfront has a full liquor license and is known for a variety of special drinks that change seasonally or whenever Shannon comes up with something new.

and planned to open its dining room and lakeside patio on May 26. Staff is now again happy to have customers consider The Waterfront whether they are looking for a date night destination or for a family night out.

Adjacent to the bar is the large dining room with a stone fireplace providing warm ambience. But it is the window that extends the entire length of the room and overlooks Brown’s Lake that adds the wow factor Sitting in front of the window and enjoying the beautiful view of the lake with the small island in direct view and the beautiful open unobstructed view of the shoreline is a favorite pastime for many customers. “We offer a menu that changes twice a year. The winter menu has a variety of comfort foods such as pot roast and roast duck for dinner entrees but also has the traditional sandwiches, and salads for a light lunch,” Peterson said. “We have a variety of choices because we want to appeal to everyone. We encourage families to come with their children.” One of the favorite choices of
families are the signature pizzas made with thin crust and topped with a variety of toppings. There is sure to be a pizza that your family will enjoy – whether it is the traditional cheese pizza or one of the unique combinations like the Hawaiian, Cajun shrimp, or chicken alfredo choices. If none of the specialty pizzas meet your tastes there is always the choice of building your own pizza.
Summertime ‘pops’
“While we are busy in the winter, it is in summer that things really begin to pop,” she added. “People arrive through the front door by car and pull up by boat and dock to make their way onto the outdoor patio.” There is also a lower-level room that can be reserved for private parties such as showers, family gatherings or other small gatherings. In a normal year the patio opens on Memorial Day weekend and stays open until Labor Day in September. This year’s opening will depend on the lifting of restrictions on restaurants. “During the summer we provide live music out on the patio,” Peterson said. “We have a specially built stage for them to perform on and we schedule for the entire summer on our music days. We try to have a variety of music to appeal to all of our customers. From country to jazz, classic rock from the ‘60s to swing and sometimes everything in between there is sure to be your favorite type of music on one of the days.” Check the calendar at www. waterfrontbrownslake.com and download the current schedule of musicians who will be performing. Music is typically scheduled on Tuesdays from 6 to 9 p.m., Saturdays from 5 to 9 p.m., and Sundays from 3 to 7 p.m. Music is also played on holidays from 3 to 7 p.m.
Fish fry days
Friday is fish fry day but it is not the only fish fry day, so is Wednesday. The Waterfront offers a variety of choices including baked or fried Icelandic cod, deep fried perch and for the more gourmet eater, baked cod Oscar (with asparagus and hollandaise sauce) or baked cod crab Oscar (with asparagus, hollandaise sauce and crab meat). Whichever version you choose it will be accompanied with coleslaw and rye bread and your choice of
potato or vegetable. It seems that there is a special nearly everyday during normal operating conditions. “We are known for our fried chicken available all day Tuesday,” Peterson said. “In summer the chicken is also available on Sunday. The chicken is a favorite of many of our visitors and for some it is the only item they order.” On Saturday after 4 p.m. there is another special that brings in the meat lovers. It is the 12-ounce queen cut or the 16-ounce king cut prime rib dinner. Served with all the trimmings and a choice of soup du jour or a salad, it is a filling meal. If you have your heart set on the prime rib dinner, come early because there is a limited amount available. “Our food is very good,” Peterson said. “We have a great team of cooks under the direction of our head chef Michelle. Everything is made from scratch and they provide excellent tasting food. They are very creative.” One of the reasons the Waterfront maintains its great reputation is the consistency of both the quality of the food and the service. “Our employees tend to stay with us whether they are working in the kitchen or serving in the dining room,” Peterson said. “In summer we do need to hire extra help because we serve so many more people. The Good Housekeeping Research Institute found that inflatable pool toys are especially dangerous. Such toys can flip easily, putting children at risk for injury (from striking the sides of the pool) or drowning (especially if the children were ejected into deep water). Inflatables also can prevent access to the surface of the water for submerged swimmers.
Choose a backyard lifeguard
At least one person should be designated as backyard lifeguard when the pool is in use. This person should always direct his or her focus on the pool, counting swimmers and keeping track of who enters and leaves the pool. Pool users should not be allowed to run around the perimeter of an inground pool, as the cement can get slippery when wet and lead to falls that can cause injuries Exercise caution when using diving boards or diving into pools. It’s easy for divers to hit their heads when diving off a board into a pool due to close proximity of the transition wall in the deep end of the pool or by diving into shallow water. The Red Cross recommends a water depth of 11.5 feet for safe diving and the transition wall should be at least 16.5 feet from the tip of the diving board. However, the standard depth for many pools is 7.5 feet of water and a slope beginning seven feet from the board.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission warns that drowning is the leading cause of unintentional death in children between the ages of one and four in the United States. Pools attract curious children, so maintaining a barrier between the home and the pool is essential. Many municipalities require some sort of fencing around pools or ladders that self-latch or can be closed off to climbing. Locks and alarms on windows and doors that face or provide access to the backyard also can serve as barriers.
