full day, ranging in price from $25 to $350. Payne said most weekdays there aren’t issues renting a kayak or SUP on-site but on weekends and holidays, reservations are recommended.
Gear for any weather
Payne said the tagline used by Clear Water Outdoor is the best way to sum up what they offer and it’s based on quality products. “There’s no such thing as bad weather, just bad gear. That’s what we say,” he said. “So if the weather is bad you can still go out. You just need the right gear. The items we sell aren’t cheap but from the quality of how it’s made to the way the companies of the products stand behind their items is on a different level.” Payne said working with companies with those high standards is a priority for Clear Water Outdoor. “We look at the practices of the companies we buy products from and we also look at the warranty. So 99 percent of the time, if you’re wearing our products and have issues, we can get them replaced,” he said. Payne said the brands carried by the store are all high quality such as Patagonia, Kuhl and Mountain Khakis and it shows by how they stand behind their products. “That’s the biggest thing – someone can bring me a Patagonia shirt with a hole in it. It’s a lifetime guarantee so while we can’t always replace it with the exact same shirt, we can find a comparable one or get them a gift card,” he said. Payne said some of the companies whose products they sell will repair items whenever possible. “Their whole thing is to not to throw it in the landfill. Like Chaco sandals – if the sole wears out you send it in for $30 after having it for years and they’ll put a new sole and mesh on it and send it back. It’s like getting a brand new pair for a fraction of the cost,” Payne said. Some of the current hot items at the Clear Water Outdoor store are Hydro Flask water bottles and Pura Vida jewelry. Payne said the back of the store features a clearance section so that’s a good way to get a deal on a good product. “And the items in that section are constantly changing as we’re always moving product through,” he said.

According to Payne, Clear Water Outdoor offers clothing, gear and accessories for all four seasons. “We’re getting heavy into our summer stuff now, in the fall we’ll have some sweaters, fleece and rainwear, and in the winter, some heavier clothes and snow boots,” he said. Speaking of winter, they also offer winter rentals of snowshoes and cross country skis. He said another advantage of offering high quality products – and being in the outdoor sports industry – is support to ensure the store’s staff are properly trained. “They send out reps to do clinics so we see the items and features. Summertime boating safety tips for families As summer approaches, many families look forward to more time on the water together. The fun might include boating and other watersports, such as tubing, skiing, or wakeboarding. Preparation and education are the keys to a safe and successful day on the water. So get the summer off to a great start by making sure passengers of all ages have well-fitted lifejackets and understand safety procedures. When fitting a child’s lifejacket, be sure to select the current size. Don’t put a child in an adult lifejacket or buy one in a larger size for a child to grow into. Rather, put the jacket on the child and buckle and secure all straps. Then lift the child’s arm up over his or her head and pull up on the jacket. If it slips off, it’s too big. If you don’t own a lifejacket and aren’t prepared to buy one, borrow one from a friend or neighbor, or borrow one for free through the BoatUS Foundation Kids Life Jacket Loaner program. During this exposure, a person’s built-in cooling system may fail to produce enough sweat to lower body his or her body temperature, putting his or her life at risk as a result. Heat stroke develops rapidly and requires immediate medical treatment. If not treated immediately, heat stroke can prove fatal.

But Johns Hopkins Medicine notes that some of the more common heat stroke symptoms include: • Headache, • Dizziness, • Disorientation, agitation, or confusion, • Sluggishness or fatigue, • Seizure, • Hot, dry skin that is flushed but not sweaty, • High body temperature, • Loss of consciousness, • Rapid heartbeat, and • Hallucinations.

The simplest way to prevent heat stroke is to avoid spending time outdoors in the sun on hot days. If you must go outdoors, do so when temperatures are mild and the sun is low, such as in the early morning or evening.

In addition to being wise about when you spend time in the sun, you can do the following to prevent heat stroke. • Drink plenty of fluids, such as water and sports drinks that can help your body maintain its electrolyte balance, when spending time outdoors. In addition, avoid caffeinated beverages like coffee, soda and tea as well as alcohol;
• Wear lightweight, tightly woven and loosefitting clothing in light colors; • Always wear a hat and sunglasses when going outdoors, and use an umbrella on especially hot days; and • Take frequent drinks during outdoor activities and mist yourself with a spray bottle to reduce the likelihood of becoming overheated. Do not leave food sitting out
