Pools make some backyards the places to be in late spring and throughout summer. Lazy summer afternoons are a lot more enjoyable when they’re spent in or alongside a pool, and kids tend to say “I’m bored” with considerably less frequency when a pool is within arm’s reach. Pools are certainly fun, but they’re only as fun as they are safe. According to the USA Swimming Foundation, between Memorial Day and Labor Day in 2018, at least 148 children younger than age 15 fatally drowned in swimming pools or spas. While those figures

Learn which bait are prohibited in certain bodies of water. Artificial lures that hook the fish in the lip are preferred; • Avoid playing with the fish to exhaustion; and • Keep the fish wet and calm, and treat it gently to remove the hook. Hold the fish underwater and allow it to ventilate before release so it can regain its swimming strength. Fishing is a popular sport and can be enjoyed responsibly. As a result, fishing is regulated by Fish and Wildlife officers and game wardens. Those who are new to fishing or to a particular region must learn and follow the rules regarding fishing. Fishing licenses are typically required to fish in a given state or area. Always speak with a licensing agency about size restrictions and any other rules regarding species of fish. Also learn about which methods of fishing are legal. Drag nets or other methods of mass fish collection or luring the fish with lights or other equipment may be prohibited. Learning how to safely catch and release fish if the need arises also is an essential component of responsible fishing. When done correctly, catch-and-release methods can ensure high survival rates and preserve native fish populations. The National Park Service advises

Fishing is one of the most popular recreational pursuits in North America. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service says around 40 million people fish each year. Fishing can be an ideal way to spend time in the great outdoors, and people often bond with family and friends while fishing. As any angler can attest, there’s a rush that comes from getting a small tug on the line and then reeling in a fish. At this point, fishermen must decide if the fish is a keeper or should be tossed back into the water. Sometimes the answer is very clear. Rivers and lakes across the world are managed by various organizations that serve to protect wildlife and natural resources. Rules may be in place regarding the sizes of fish that can be kept, which species are safe and which are protected, and even when people can fish. In a study led by researchers with the U.S. Geological Survey that was published in the journal Fisheries, thousands of distinct
structures, advises homeowners to inspect all pedestrian gates in the barrier fences around their pools. Such gates should be self-closing and self-latching, as both features ensure gates are always closed. In addition, the ICC recommends padlocking other gates around the property.

We have just been growing every year and are trying to keep up with the growth,” she said. Customers can arrive to the establishment by car or by boat because the restaurant has a pier on the Brown’s Lake shoreline. “People can pull up by boat, (or) they can come by land. It’s a great venue,” Peterson said. “We have the most beautiful spot in Burlington, because we are directly on the lake, we have panoramic views from all the windows upstairs, we have a large outdoor patio that seats over 100 that is right on the shores of the lake.” The outdoor patio also includes live entertainment, with some returning favorites, to entertain customers from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Performers are scheduled 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays, 5 to 9 p.m. Saturdays and 3 to 7 p.m. Sundays and holidays. Returning performers include the popular Jeff Trudell, a classic rock musician, Three James Morgan, and acoustic rock group Blackwater, among other favorites. “We have a lot of the same returning favorites every year,” said Peterson, noting they always add new groups and soloists. Live music, however, is not the only feature on the patio. “We have a fire pit out there,” Peterson said.
On the second floor, Peterson said, the circular bar often serves as a place where people meet, and form long-lasting friendships. “Our upstairs bar, it is one of those circular bars, so it is a very open atmosphere where people can talk to each other across the bar,” she said. “People make friends with each other here all the time and it is a lot fun.” For those looking for a venue to host a party, the Waterfront hosts private events, ranging from baby showers to corporate events during the fall and winter months.

The restaurant, at 31100 Weiler Road, Burlington, also continues to find ways to upgrade its facility overlooking the lake. “We have a wide-ranging menu. We are the only restaurant on Brown’s Lake, so we try to make our menu inclusive for everyone because everyone should be able to enjoy it,” said General Manager Tanya Peterson. The menu features appetizers, like calamari, cheese curds, salmon cakes and jumbo wings, to different pizzas to satisfy the diverse tastes of Waterfront customers. Appetizers and pizzas, however, are not the only items on the menu. “We have everything from our signature thin crust pizzas to salads to delicious sandwiches and entrees that you can enjoy on date night,” Peterson said. In addition, the Waterfront offers daily specials, Tuesday through Sundays. The specials include southern fried chicken on Tuesdays and Sundays, fish fry favorites Wednesdays and Fridays. Pier 290 strives for consistency New managers focus on the dining experience

On the sunny, scenic shores of Williams Bay sits the high-end, casual restaurant Pier 290. As the most recent addition to the Gage family of brands, it’s one of the few eateries on Geneva Lake for locals and visitors alike to arrive and dine by land or by sea. As a premier space to enjoy “great food, refreshing drinks, and a stunning atmosphere” – including a large outdoor dining space, Pier 290 is a popular place to spend time enjoying the company of family and friends, the restaurant’s website states. “One challenge our restaurant has always faced, however, is stability. With a difficult market that undergoes major upswings each summer and gentle declines between fall and spring, the experiences of our guests have, at times, been inconsistent,” the site states. “This year, we’re committed to making these inconsistencies a thing of the past.”

Cummings also knows the area market well, having managed restaurants at Grand Geneva and Houlihan’s as well as his most recent position as assistant general manager at Sprecher’s Restaurant and Pub for six years. “My background is unique in that I understand how each level of our restaurant’s staff must work together in order to provide the best possible experience for our customers,” Cummings said. “Having worked in each position, myself, and been in corporate environments where consistency is king, I’m looking forward to bringing it all together at Pier 290.”

In line with the weather trending warmer, a few weeks ago the restaurant made the transition from heartier dishes to lighter and fresher options. In addition to several of its customers’ favorite appetizers, highlights from the new summer menu at Pier 290 include: Refreshing Watermelon Stack – freshly cut and stacked watermelon sprinkled with goat cheese, a pinch of pepper and drizzled with a balsamic glaze; New Citrus Shrimp Salad – combines sweet and salty flavors of Gulf shrimp, chopped romaine lettuce, cherry tomatoes, red onion, and sliced avocado – all gently tossed in a cilantro
citrus vinaigrette and topped with sliced almonds and fresh mozzarella cheese; Grilled Chicken Sandwich – a smoky and satisfying menu item featuring a double-lobed chicken breast and smoked bacon, topped with sliced avocado and zesty chipotle mayo – all served on a toasted brioche bun; Norwegian Salmon – pan seared with fresh flavor alongside a trio of tomatoes, asparagus, and fresh basil and garlic, served with a small twirl of angel hair pasta and a sweet wine olive oil sauce to boot; Bone-In Pork Chop – house-cut and smoked, 10 oz. chop offers a full, rich flavor and is served with a tangy chipotle cream cheese sauce, potato mash, and seasonal vegetables; 16 oz. As a result of that commitment, Pier 290 introduced its new management team of Adam Farrell and Colin Cummings “to tag team our restaurant’s improvement efforts – each with their own impressive background in hospitality,” the site states. Farrell grew up in the restaurant business as his parents owned and operated Abell’s Corners, a former bar and grill just north of Elkhorn. Continuing to moonlight at a variety of restaurants over the years, Farrell committed to hospitality full-time occupying a series of roles at Pier 290 nearly a decade ago. After leaving to manage the Bunker Grill & BBQ at Evergreen Country Club for a time, “we’re thrilled to bring Adam back in-house to provide a classic perspective to our future outlook,” according to the announcement. Farrell said he was pleased to be able to get back to his roots and help provide a more stable path forward for Pier 290. “There is plenty of history here, for me, and I believe a few subtle improvements will go a long way in providing our customers with amazing experiences – every time they visit,” Farrell said. Cummings has more than 25 years in the food service industry. His foundation in hospitality began with his mother who made a career managing large-scale, industrial kitchens. He began carving out his own career at age 17 when he took his first job as a food service manager. Since then, he has worked at every level of restaurant management – from banquets and bartending to corporate positions at Chili’s and Cheesecake Factory, the announcement states.

The Browns Lake Aquaducks outlasted wicked weather, which was a constant struggle all season, to capture its first Division II Wisconsin State Waterski Show title in a decade in July. The Aquaducks accounted for 1,275.43 total points, 67 points better than second place Badwater Ski-ters. The team won six categories in the tournament held July 18 through 21 on Lake Wazeecha at Red Sands Beach near Wisconsin Rapids. “Teamwork and experience were the driving factors in our success at the state tournament this year,” Dan Schauer, Aquaducks vice president, said. “We have members who have been skiing with the Aquaducks for nearly 30 years. When you combine that knowledge with the competitive nature of our skiers, we were able to put together a complete show on the water.” For the Aquaducks, which finished third in 2018, the ballet line consisting of 20 women and boat crews played a key role during the tournament. The ballet line, according to Schauer, spent many evenings practicing to perfect its routine. “Really, our ballet line is what we are known for,” he said. “Our girls put a lot of effort into their routine.” The ballet line finished 72 points ahead of the second place Crivitz Ski Cats with 345 points to win the category. Season continues
The Aquaducks will continue its season on the shores of Browns Lake at Fischer Park every Thursday at 6:30 p.m. The show theme this year is ‘Jumanji.’ The Aquaducks ski team gets sucked into the Jumanji game-show ski edition and they have to ski their way out of the game, navigating hazards at various levels of the game Since 1976, the Aquaducks have won the state tournament six times and the national championship twice.

Encountering poor weather was a constant theme this year, according to Schauer, who indicated the season on Browns Lake started late. “We had a rough beginning of the year with a lot of bad weather, the inability to practice and cancelled shows,” he said.

While 46 competed on the water, the other 26 served as either boat drivers or support on the shore. “It feels amazing because of the teamwork,” Bever said. “We put it all together as a team at the last minute.”

Wicked weather
Bad weather did not miss the squad when it arrived to Central Wisconsin. The State Water Ski Show tournament faced delays, notably tornado warnings causing power outages, and downed trees. “The tournament weekend was filled with record heat followed by intense storms across the state,” Schauer said. “We spent portions of Friday and Saturday in shelters at the tourney site waiting out the storms.” Because of the long delays, however, the Aquaducks needed to re-write the show after show announcer had to leave for an international flight. Unfazed, Ledger, a ballet line member, stepped in as announcer and modified the team’s presentation with show director Jordan Karweik. “We ended up winning our sound and comedy high scoring acts,” Schauer said. In the sound category, the Aquaducks accounted for 796 points, 99 points ahead of Crivitz. Janet Peterson and Chris Wohlgefahrt were on the sound crew. “We really pulled it off and it was a very entertaining show,” Bever said. “The crowd loved it.” The Aquaducks, meanwhile, picked up the highest score in showmanship with 865 points and second best in the barefoot line. Meanwhile, for boating, the Aquaducks had the best pick-up boat crew with 229 points and top towboat drivers at 569 points. Contributing to the highest scoring pick-up/ safety boats were driver Burt Peterson and spotter Alex Meike along with driver Tom Ripple and spotter Tristan Vos. Participants of the towboat team were Matt Remer, triple rig; Scott Limberg, twin rig; Jake Needle, single rig and Don Baird, inboard. “Our boat driving has been really consistent at winning the state’s high scores for several years,” Schauer said.

Flowerbed maintenance keeps gardens looking their best all summer long A bit of grooming and care will keep your flower gardens looking their best throughout the hot summer months and into fall. Remove the flower stems of salvias, veronicas and similar flowers as the blooms begin to fade. Remove the individual blooms as they fade for maximum beauty. Once all the individual flowers have bloomed out, you can cut the flower stem back at the base. Keep coral bells tidy and many varieties
blooming longer with a bit of deadheading. Remove the whole flower stem, once blooms fade, back to the leafy base where it arises from the plant. And cut a few flowers to enjoy indoors in a summer bouquet. Remove faded flowers for a neater and tidier appearance, but no additional bloom, on peonies, lamb’s ear and bergenia. Removing the seedpods of peonies as they form, back to a healthy set of leaves, helps keep stems upright and makes for a tidier plant throughout the summer. Removing spent flowers on perennials like bee balm, purple coneflower, salvia, veronicas, garden phlox and many others will encourage additional bloom. You may want to skip deadheading of any late blooming varieties. This allows them to form seed pods for a bit of winter interest. Further improve your garden’s beauty by removing or trimming back discolored foliage with sharp scissors or a hand pruner. A bit of pinching and pruning now as various flowers fade will extend the beauty and your enjoyment throughout summer and into fall.
