The National Safe Boating Council advises boaters to follow these tips when out on the water:

The U.S. Coast Guard’s 2016 Recreational Boating Safety Statistics, the latest official record of reported recreational boating accidents, say drowning was the cause of death in 80 percent of all boating fatalities. About 83 percent of those who drowned were not wearing life jackets. According to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, as of June 12, 2017, there were 13 deaths on Wisconsin waters. Six of those deaths have been classified as “drowning,” two are listed as “trauma/injury” and three incidents are still under investigation with results pending. Last year, Wisconsin reported 20 boating deaths, putting the state ninth in the most deaths, according to the Coast Guard statistics. In 2016, the Coast Guard counted 4,463 accidents that involved 701 deaths, 2,903 injuries and about $49 million dollars of damage to property as a result of recreational boating accidents. The fatality rate was 5.9 deaths per 100,000 registered recreational vessels. This rate represents a 11.3

How to boat with If you enjoy boating, you probably enjoy taking your best friends out on your boat, especially if some of your best friends happen to have four legs and a tail. The following tips can help you keep your pet safe and happy while out on the water: • Keep plenty of fresh drinking water available. Provide a shaded area – excessive exposure to the sun can cause problems for animals. • Protect their feet – dogs absorb heat through the pads on their feet and boat surfaces can get very hot in the sun. • Give your pet a chance to get acquainted with the boat while it is on the trailer or at the dock. • Walk your dog so he can relieve himself before boarding; if the boat surface allows, you may wish to train him to go in a specific spot. • Keep your first outing short, to let your dog get used to the boat movement. • Fishing – keep lures, bait and hooks safely stored and out of reach from your dog. • Treats – Don’t forget the treats and toys. This will help your dog understand the boat is a safe place.

The truth is not all dogs can swim and those that can aren’t all great swimmers. Additionally, water or weather conditions can cause problems, even for a pet that is typically a strong swimmer. Any dog can get fatigued or disoriented and older dogs, especially, can tire easily. Pets with low body fat can have trouble when exposed to water for long periods. Health issues, such as hip or joint problems, can also make swimming difficult for some pets. While there are no regulations regarding life jackets for pets, a dog life jacket can help keep your pet safe while aboard your boat or around any body of water. Pet life jackets are designed to keep the animal afloat in a horizontal, swimming position. The pet life jacket also serves as a retrieval device, should your pet fall overboard. How do you choose a life jacket for Fido? Here are a few things to consider: • Fit – Make sure the life jacket fits securely. According to the study, for a family of four, fuel prices would have to more than quadruple for RV vacations to lose the economic advantage over other forms of travel. For an adult couple, fuel prices would have to more than double before RV vacations would become more costly. According to PKF, fluctuations in fuel costs economically impact all of the vacation types analyzed. Airlines, for example, often add surcharges when fuel prices rise, in addition to other fees. PKF’s findings match the experiences of RVers, according to RVIA’s biannual Campfire Canvass survey of RV owners which showed 89 percent of RV owners reported savings of 10 percent or more when they travel by RV. Twothirds reported saving 25 percent or more. The study did not attempt to quantify nonmonetary benefits that RV vacationers enjoy. The Recreation Vehicle Industry Association is the national association representing nearly 400 manufacturers and component suppliers producing about 98 percent of all RVs made in the United States. and eating in restaurants. PKF analyzed vacation costs for two sets of traveling parties – a family of four, including two adults and two children; and a party of two adults. PKF calculated the costs for these hypothetical travelers taking nine different types of vacations to nine popular vacation destinations, including: Branson, Mo.; Cape Cod, Maine; the Grand Canyon; Corpus Christi, Texas; Orlando, Fla.; Lancaster, Pa.; Napa, Calif.; Traverse City, Mich.; and Yellowstone National Park. The study analyzed popular RV types, including folding camping trailers, lightweight travel trailers, compact motorhomes, Type C motorhomes, and Type A motorhomes. Vacation durations were three, seven and 14 days, and were directly related to the round-trip distances in highway miles between city-pairs. PKF also analyzed how theoretical increases in fuel prices could affect vacation travel costs, according to the press release. Trips in type A motorhomes – typically the largest and most luxurious of RVs – were compared to other upscale vacation travel options. The 2014 study found that Type A motorhome vacations were 45 percent less expensive than upscale air/hotel vacations.

Consumers looking to get away more and save on travel should go RVing, according to a study comparing vacation costs. Research showed that recreation vehicle trips remain the least costly, even during a time of economic turmoil and fluctuating fuel prices, according to a press release from the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association. The study, prepared in 2014 for the association by PKF Consulting USA, a member of an international travel and tourism consulting group, found that RV travel is 23 to 59 percent less expensive than other types of vacations, for a family of four that owns an RV. For an “emptynester” couple traveling by RV, savings were 11 to 46 percent. RVIA Director of Public Relations Kevin Broom said an updated study will be released later this summer, but was unavailable at press time. “The findings were similar to the 2014 version,” Broom said. Even after accounting for factors such as RV ownership costs and fuel prices, the 2014 study showed that RV vacations offer greater savings than those taken using a personal car or airline, staying in a hotel, rental house or condominium,

Close call Sport fisherman shares story about boating accident
Sport fishermen Hunter Bland and Conner Young of the University of Florida Bass Fishing Team were almost seriously injured when they were thrown from their boat during a tournament in early 2017. Now, Bland is sharing about their close call in a video PSA from the National Safe Boating Council. Bland and his teammate took all the proper safety precautions, but were ejected from their boat while going about 55 mph because of a hydraulic steering part failure. “I’ve been boating for my entire life, and never once did I think something like this could happen to me,” Bland said. “I want to make sure everyone knows what saved my life to try and help others. If it wasn’t for my engine cut-off device and my life jacket, I wouldn’t be here today.” The PSA was produced at the Eckerd College Waterfront Program in St. Petersburg, Fla. and includes original footage from the boat incident captured by Bland’s GoPro action camera (Bland Brothers Films via Storyful).
