An ice-cold beverage and boating can go hand-in-hand. However, just as with driving a car, it is illegal to operate a boat while intoxicated across the United States and Canada. In fact, being intoxicated on the water can be even more dangerous than being intoxicated on land. Unsteady footing, sun, wind, and even engine noise accelerates a drinker’s impairment. Keeping in mind a few simple safety tips can make all the difference for boat owners everywhere. So, before your next outing, make sure you, your boat and your passengers are all ready to go – and enjoy the ride!

here’s no denying personal watercraft (i.e., jet skis) are an exhilarating ride and a fun way to spend an afternoon on a local lake or reservoir. Think of it as a snowmobile for the water. With horsepower similar to large outboard boat engines and acceleration equivalent to motorcycles, jet skis are much more than mere toys. According to the BoatUS Foundation, these powerful machines are more hazardous to operate than other watercraft. Jet skis make up just 9 percent of all registered marine vessels in the United States but account for 26 percent of reported accidents. Experience and proper education in jet ski operation are vital to reducing your risk of accidents. Besides adhering to laws on age and education requirements, a checklist of good safety practices can make for a fun and mishapfree day on the water. Jet skis are considered Class A vessels by the U.S. Coast Guard, meaning all rules and regulations for boats under 16 feet apply. So before you take your jet ski out for the first time, it must be outfitted with the required equipment for its class.
A Coast Guard-approved fire extinguisher needs to be secured onboard, as well as a functioning backfire flame arrestor and ventilation system. You’ll also need a signaling device, such as a whistle or horn, and vessel registration with properly displayed decals. No matter how good a swimmer you are, a flotation device such as a life vest is a must for all passengers as well as anyone being towed behind. It’s also the law. Whoever is operating the Jet Ski must wear a cord or lanyard around their wrist attached to the key in the ignition. This can help to prevent the engine staying on in case the driver falls off. The cord should also be removed when the Jet Ski is docked, to prevent any unauthorized use.
Take a safety course
Even if your home state doesn’t require a boating safety course, it’s still highly recommended you take one, especially if it offers instruction on the unique operating features of jet skis. You may even qualify for a personal watercraft insurance discount when you
complete an approved safety course. After your boating safety course, first time operators should gain some practical experience in a secluded area away from busy waters; most accidents involve collisions with other watercraft. This allows you to become familiar with how your jet ski works and handles in a safe space.
Always drive defensively
Even with education and experience, all jet ski riders should drive defensively. A passing boat might provide a wake that’s tempting to jump but it’s easy to lose control and have the jet ski land awkwardly or, worse, upside down. Because jet skis can take up to 300 feet to stop when driving at full speed, be alert to other jet skis, boats and swimmers. You should never carry more passengers than your jet ski allows. And while it’s tempting to place a little one in front, all passengers need to sit behind the driver. Finally, don’t loan your jet ski to an unqualified driver. Accidents happen, but more so when the operator has no experience or education controlling such a high-powered vessel. Source: blog.nationwide.com
Tips for grilling the perfect burger Hamburgers are a staple at backyard barbecues. Though burgers are a relatively simple food, mastering the technique to grill burgers is no small feat, as there is more to great grilled burgers than simply firing up the grill and dropping down a patty. • Choose fresh ground beef that has a decent percentage of fat. The fat-to-lean meat ratio should be around 20 percent fat to 80 percent meat. Spend a little more to get freshly ground meat that has not been previously frozen. • Don’t overwork the burgers with a lot of handling. This will warm up the fat in the burger, which causes it to emulsify and could make the meat rubbery. • Reconsider adding a lot of herbs, spices or add-ins to the burgers, as such items can detract from the flavor of the meat. Extra herbs and spices also may require extra mixing, which can lead overhandling. • Push a dimple into the top of the burger, which will help prevent the burger from expanding upward and out while cooking and rounding out in the process. The dimple will keep the top of the burger flat, which facilitates easy topping. • Make sure the grill is hot. Burgers do well with high heat and will cook relatively quickly. • Resist the urge to push down on the patty with your spatula. This will cause the juices to spill out and may result in a dry, tough burger. • Let burgers rest before serving. This lets the juices redistribute throughout and makes for a moist and tasty first bite. (METRO CREATIVE)

Outdoor living spaces are booming and highly achievable, and many such spaces need not be expensive.
Expand living spaces with clever ideas
Whether there’s a ledge, overhang, small terrace, or porch off the house, turn it into a relaxing area for reading a book or sipping a beverage. Use a few outdoor pillows, pull up a small folding table and dress the area with hanging lights and potted plants for a quiet retreat.
Add privacy to a porch
If it’s privacy you covet, install curtain rods and hang lightweight mesh or another translucent material that obscures neighbors’ views without blocking out natural light. Invest in outdoor sofas and chaises to create an outdoor living room right on the porch. If your budget allows, consider closing in the porch as a true three-season room so it can be used throughout fall, spring and summer. (METRO CREATIVE)

Homeowners looking to add more space to their homes do not necessarily need to make major renovations. They simply have to see the possibilities in outdoor living spaces. Outdoor living spaces are coveted niches in a home. The American Home Furnishings Alliance says more than 70 percent of American households have outdoor living spaces, and nearly 70 percent of people use these spaces at least once per week in-season. Furthermore, homeowners are increasingly interested in enhancing these spaces to make them more usable and comfortable. A recent survey from the online home design and remodeling resource Houzz found that more than 4,500 users were planning a landscape update. In addition, 56 percent of homeowners surveyed were making updates to improve their yards for entertaining. While the creation of outdoor living spaces can cost thousands of dollars depending on the renovation, homeowners have more budgetfriendly options at their disposal as well. The following are some ways to create inviting spaces no matter how much square-footage is present.
Life jackets are for everyone
90 percent of drowning victims aren’t wearing a PFD A life jacket (or personal flotation device) is the single most important piece of equipment on your boat and the most important consideration should be size. More than two-thirds of all boating fatalities are drowning incidents and 90 percent of drowning victims were not wearing a life jacket. So buy a life jacket that you will wear ... it could save your life. In Wisconsin, there is no state law, so boaters must abide by federal regulation, which requires that all children younger than 13 wear a PFD, while on federal waterways in this state. To determine if the waterway where you boat is a federal waterway, contact your state boating agency. If a child is in a cabin or below deck a PFD is not required. United States Coast Guard approved PFDs must fit properly and be in good condition. Requirements for life jackets There must be a properly fitting life jacket for each and every person aboard a recreational vessel. Life jackets must be Coast Guard-

approved, in serviceable condition and the appropriate size for the intended user. Obviously, they are most effective when worn. On a vessel underway, children under 13 must wear an appropriate Coast Guard-approved PFD, unless they are below decks or in an enclosed cabin. Within the geographic boundaries of

Some potential health benefits of paddleboarding Paddleboarding, which involves participants standing on a paddleboard or surfboard and using their arms to paddle through the ocean, is an increasingly popular recreational activity. Often seen as a relaxing way to spend a peaceful day on the water, paddleboarding might provide some hidden health benefits. The following are just a few potential health benefits of paddleboarding.
Stress reduction
According to the American Psychological Association, in 2015 a greater percentage of adults reported feeling extreme levels of stress than in 2014. Many paddleboarding enthusiasts acknowledge the soothing qualities of paddleboarding, and a 2016 study published in
the academic journal Health & Place found that increased views of blue space, including oceans, can be linked to lower levels of psychological distress.
Exercise
While it might not be high-intensity exercise, paddleboarding is exercise and can provide an avenue for otherwise sedentary men, women and children to begin increasing their levels of physical activity. Muscles in legs get a workout when paddleboarding, as these muscles are tasked with holding the body steady. In the meantime, core abdominal muscles also get a workout as they work to maintain the body’s balance. And of course, muscles in the arms, back and shoulders are needed for paddling. While paddleboarding may not qualify as vigorous a cardiovascular or strength-training exercise, it does provide a low-impact way for participants to engage muscles throughout their bodies.
Balance
