Winners in the 2017 livestock competitions
For then 16–year–old Jordyn by Jason Schultz, all it took was balance, Arndt and help from her father to STAFF achieve two honors at the 2017 WRITER Kenosha County Fair. Schultz, of Brighton, won the title of Grand Champion Steer for her 1,410– pound crossbreed she calls Houdini. Grand Champion Steer was not her only accomplishment, however, as she collected Reserve Grand Champion for a 254–pound crossbreed pig. “It was nice to win,” said Schultz, who credits the guidance of her father, Robert. “It was me and my daD, we are the most involved. All summer, morning and night, we are working on our animals.” Schultz, a five–year member of Brighton Bombers/Explorers 4H Club, has shown animals for all five of those years. The Westosha Central High School senior started showing pigs before adding steer to her show career two years ago. Through her Kenosha County Fair show career, Schultz learned more than raising animals, but also time management. “It was an every day thing, bonding with the animals, it is something that you have to do,” Schultz said. “It was just managing time and planning things out.” Although she has only shown for five years, Schultz said the Kenosha County Fair has become a part of her life. “It has had a big impact on my life, just because I am always working on my animals,” Schultz said. In her first year, she won Grand Champion Duroc for a pig she showcased.
Winning reserve grand champion was Joseph McManus, of Wheatland Willing Workers, for his 1,335–pound steer he dubbed Moose.

See ewe at the fair! The Kenosha County Fair returns for another year Aug. 15 through 19 in Wilmot and organizers hope to “See Ewe at the Fair!” The annual five-day event will deliver tunes from local bands, exhibits for people of all ages, shows in the grandstand, and much more.
Diverse musical genres
From bluegrass to classical music, the fair promises to deliver a diverse range of talent, which include some returning favorites. Performers scheduled to appear on the Creekside Stage include DJ Nick D, KR Bluegrass Band, Gooroos, Burro Creek, The Now Band, Doo Wop Daddies, Bella Cain, Amazing Farm Boys, Class of ’62, among other acts. For specific times and dates, visit kenoshacofair.com. Some of the traditional countrified fair entertainment includes animal shows, a hay bale throwing contest, garden tractor events and engines roaring on the Wilmot Raceway.
High-flying action
In the grandstand, the fun starts Aug. 15,
when Digger Doug plans to conduct the third annual ATV/UTV Showdown. The event starts at 6:30 p.m. Digger Doug, a 20-year pro ATV/ UTV rider, plans to showcase high-flying, mogul-jumping stunts. For race fans, the highlights on the Wilmot Raceway include the IRA Outlaw Sprint Series and the WingLESS Sprints and Bandits at the grandstand. Gates open at 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday with racing beginning at 6:45 p.m. There is an additional $7 fee to attend the races.
Unique antiques
Throughout the fair, there will be an Antique Farm Machinery Exhibit, which offers guests a glimpse into yesteryear. See the old tractors, engines, and machinery from a time gone by. There will be an antique tractor parade on Thursday, Aug. 16, at 5 p.m., when the models of yesterday venture throughout the fairgrounds and grandstand.
For the kids
The county fair and kids go hand-inhand and there are plenty of kid-friendly

activities to keep families busy throughout the entire run. The annual Children’s Parade steps off at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 17, at the southeast end of the fairgrounds, near the fair office. Onsite registration begins at 9:30 a.m.
Admission
The fair has an all-pay policy. Everyone who enters the fairgrounds
must pay the daily admission price. Tickets cost $10 for adults ages 12 and up, $5 for children ages 7 to 11 and free for children 6 and younger. The cost for seniors 65 and older is $7. Season passes are also available for $35 for adults and $12 for children. The fairgrounds will open 8 a.m. and close midnight Wednesday through Saturday, and from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday.

Take the bus to the County Fair Kenosha County Transit has $2 trips to and from fairgrounds
Western Kenosha County Transit is adding a bus stop at the Kenosha County Fair for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, Aug. 15 to 17. Riders can take the bus to the fair from Twin Lakes, Silver Lake, Paddock Lake or Kenosha for only $2 each way. The bus stop is at the fair’s South Gate by the high school. Look for the banner, “Western Transit Stops Here.” Bus service to and from the fair runs from 8 a.m. to 5:20 p.m. with stops at the Twin Lakes Library, Meadowview/ Lincolncrest Apartments, Twin LakesAurora, Silver Crest Apartments, Village Plaza Shopping Center, Target/St. Catherine’s Hospital and the Southport Plaza. The last bus heading east to Kenosha leaves the fair at 3:45 p.m. The last bus heading west to Twin Lakes leaves the fair at 5:20 p.m. For the full schedule of departures and

Western Kenosha County Transit provides a bus service connecting rural Kenosha County to Kenosha, Lake Geneva, and Antioch, Ill. Riders can connect to Kenosha Area Transit at Southport Plaza or to the Metra in Antioch to further their travels. Fair entertainment schedule features country, rock and more The county group Bella Cain returns as the Kenosha County Fair headliner at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 18. The popular local band has been performing since 2010 and has become one of the largest and most “in-demand” top 40 country groups in the region. With more than 23 members in the band, that include musicians, dancers, sound and light engineers, techs/crew, merchandise staff and drivers, the group can be seen performing across the Midwest, rocking the stages of Country Thunder, Country USA, SummerFest, FM106 and US-99 Sponsored Events, Navy Pier, State Fair, Allstate Arena, Bradley Center as well as headlining many fairs and private festivals in Illinois,

Enjoy some favorite fair foods
State and county fair season has arrived, and that means there will be rides and games galore. While many people are drawn to fairs by the entertainment, just as many are willing to stand in line for the unique and tasty foods that seem to embody fair and carnival fun. If it can be served on a stick or deepfried, chances are you can find it at a fair. Everything from chocolate-dipped bacon to deep-fried butter may turn up on fair stand menus. The following are some of the more coveted foods revelers can expect to find at their local fairs and carnivals. • Funnel cake – Funnel cake and its close cousin, zeppole, have long been fair favorites. Topped with powdered sugar, funnel cakes can be pulled apart and shared with others. • Corn dogs – Corn dogs are essentially hot dogs on a stick that have been covered in cornmeal and fried. Like funnel cakes, corn dogs have become so synonymous with fairs and carnivals that few people have ever enjoyed them anywhere outside of their local fairgrounds. • French fries – French fries are a favorite at fairs, and carnival-goers can choose from savory shoestrings to hearty steak-cut potato chunks. • Cotton candy – What fair would be complete without a cotton candy vendor? Cotton candy is made by heating up granulated sugar until it is liquefied enough to be blown into thin threads. Those threads are collected and wound into a sweet treat that is loved by kids and adults alike. • Pie – Fair-goers are likely to happen upon a pie-eating contest or pie-tasting tent. Many prefer to indulge in a piece of pie while at the fair, preferring such treats to sweeter, heavier desserts. • Corn on the cob – Corn on the cob is proof that carnivals and fairs provide some healthy fare for customers in addition to the many decadent treats on display. Corn on the cob is most popular in corn-producing areas and can be the ideal complement to burgers and other fair foods. • Anything on a stick – Each year fair vendors experiment with culinary oddities that can be served on a stick. Smart ways to keep kids safe in crowded areas Amusement parks, beaches, tourist attractions, concerts, and local fairs attract families each year. Such outings can be exciting and enjoyable excursions, but panic sets in immediately when parents lose track of their children. It takes mere seconds for curious children to wander off, and as the minutes tick by and kids don’t return, parents may be overcome with anxiety. Many parents have lost track of their children in crowded public places. Having a plan in place can save families anxiety when traveling through crowded locations.
Take an up-to-date photo Snap a digital head-to-toe picture the day of the trip. This can make it easier for authorities to identify lost children. In a stressful situation, parents may forget what their children were wearing when they went missing. A photo taken the day of the event can help authorities.
Dress in bright colors Dressing children in very bright colors makes them more visible in a crowd. Lime green, yellow and red clothing can help
make children more noticeable. Brightcolored clothing on Mom and Dad can also help kids keep an eye on the grownups.
Write it down Write down parental contact information. Some parents tuck a piece of paper with their cell phone numbers in their child’s pocket, while others write the number directly on a kid’s arm with a marker or pen. Some parents even apply temporary tattoos indicating their home and/or mobile numbers. Such efforts make it easy for authorities or other adults to contact parents if a child needs assistance.
Have an emergency plan Families should come up with a plan for reuniting if they get separated. This may include children going up to an authority figure for help or another mother with children. Families also can choose a meet-up location, such as a highly visible spot in a theme park (think roller coaster or Ferris wheel) or at the front gate. Upon arriving at your destination, go over the plan so it is fresh in everyone’s mind.
Teach kids who to trust
Identify people children can look to for help. Kids who were taught “stranger danger” may hesitate to go up to other people and ask for help. Parents can identify lifeguards or workers who can assist them should kids become separated from their parents.
Assign an adult to each child It’s easy for one parent to think the other parent is watching. In a family of four, Mom might be watching Joseph while Dad is watching Caitlin. A clear plan means parents can focus their attention accordingly to keep kids safe.
Use a child safety harness Safety harnesses can calm the nerves of parents worried about wandering toddlers. This device tethers a child to his or her parent or guardian, preventing kids from wandering off. Parents never expect to lose their children, but losing kids in crowded public places is possible. Growing organically
Kenosha County’s first organic beef farm is a family affair Starry Nights by Gail Peckler-Dziki Farm is an idyllic CORRESPONDENT name for an idyllic place. It’s not named after the famous Van Gogh painting, however, but after the observations of Cecilia Maggio, daughter of Paul and Marisa Maggio. The family, including 2-year-old Corinna, moved to the area from Chicago and Cecelia was astounded by how many more stars are visible where there are no city lights. The Maggios currently rent in Powers Lake but will be moving to the farm, located on Highway KD, just south of Highway 50. Paul worked in the Chicago agricultural futures market. He realized the need for another plan during the financial crisis in 2008. As he considered other options, Paul thought about where he had grown up, in Kenosha County. He moved from agricultural futures to what he and Marisa consider the future of agriculture. “We intended only to farm from a distance,” Paul said, “but wanted whatever was produced to be organic.” When they couldn’t find any farmers to rent the land that would be organic, “we decided a move was in order,” Paul said. That was two years ago this coming fall. Starry Nights Farm is the first organic, humane, free-range grass fed beef farm in Kenosha County. Marisa is the chief financial officer and handles the social media marketing. She is a CPA and has been a yoga instructor and a
health coach and is very focused on healthy eating. Next-door neighbor Butch Lois has been very helpful, according to Paul Maggio. “At first,” Paul said, “he was wary of us, wondering if we had development plans.” As the Lois and Maggio families have gotten to know each other, they have begun to work together, sharing resources. “Butch has more equipment than I have,” Paul said, “and helps with haying. Some of his cows graze in our pastures. That makes them organic, grass fed and free range. We market those animals for him.” When Paul got there, the green pastures of today were just dirt. They had to be replanted and nurtured. There are about 20 5-acre paddocks where the 120 head of cattle the Maggios have graze on a rotational basis. “That way,” Paul said, “there is no overgrazing. When the vegetation is grazed about halfway down, we move them to another paddock.” Moveable, electrical fencing is used. Paul heads out to the field to move the fencing every few days. Looking out over the herd, people can see three donkeys frolicking among the cattle, sometimes kicking up heels with the calves. Why donkeys? Paul said that the only predators that threaten his herd are coyotes. “The donkeys don’t like the coyotes and keep them away,” he said. There is a 111 year-old farmhouse on the property. The Maggios plan to salvage as much material, like wood and stone, as they can, before they demolish it.
