Since 2019, the fair’s First Aid Station has been staffed by the Salem Lakes Fire/Rescue Department who coordinates with multiple other Kenosha County municipalities to provide the fair with EMS personnel. With the fair’s mission of bringing the community together, having the Rescue and Safety Departments of the county work together to staff this event is the epitome of putting the fair’s mission in action. The First Aid Station is in the Kenosha County Fair Police Building, which is located in the middle of the fairgrounds, directly north of the Marketplace Building. The EMS providers can handle any medical condition from a bee sting to heat exhaustion as well as more critical emergencies, including heart attacks. A licensed ambulance crew is on the grounds during the operating hours of the five-day fair. If patient transport is needed, an emergency call is placed to the Salem Lakes Fire/Rescue. This crew is also equipped with an ATV which can respond to calls anywhere on the fairgrounds. The First Aid Station includes any medical supplies and equipment that may be needed during the week as well beds with privacy curtains used when evaluating guest’s conditions.

Kenosha County Fair celebrates centennial anniversary By Tracy Ouellette EDITOR
The Kenosha County Fair is celebrating its 100th festival this year. The centennial part was delayed a year because of the COVID-19 pandemic and the cancellation of last year’s fair. Fair Manager Denise Zirbel said the fair is working with the Kenosha County Health Department to ensure everyone’s safety during the fair’s run because the pandemic is still an issue. “One of the big things we want people to know is if they are not feeling well, this is not the place for you,” Zirbel said. “We’re going to have some additional signage and hand sanitizing stations and if people want to wear a mask, they are certainly welcome to, but it’s not a requirement. “Other than that, the fair’s going to look pretty much the same, with a few additions and special events to celebrate the centennial.” This year’s theme is “Sewn in Tradition.” To celebrate the fair’s anniversary, organizers are bringing back the Sunday parade, Zirbel said. “We also built the Centennial Plaza, which is a brick seating area near the barns with benches and picnic tables and umbrellas. The plaza has a brick wall with the engraved names of the people who donated to its construction. We can add names every year to the wall for the fair’s supporters.” The Centennial Plaza dedication ceremony will be on the opening day of the fair, Wednesday, Aug. 18, at 6 p.m.
The annual scavenger hunt has also been switched up for this year’s festival. “The centennial scavenger hunt, which typically is for kids, is for all ages this year,” Zirbel said. The Barrel Room is going to showcase the fair’s history by the decade, with memorabilia and artifacts. “It gives a nice history of the fair for people to look at,” Zirbel said. “We even have ribbons from the very first fair in 1920.” Additionally, the fair will host some new open class special competition. “Every year we do a special in every class, related to our theme,” Zirbel said. “This year we have 34 other classes that were sponsored with gift certificates or cash prizes ranging from food to floral to quilts to arts and crafts and more.”
Other new attractions
One of the new acts at the fair this year is Circus Shane, a family-oriented variety show with juggling, trampoline, magic, audience participation, comedy and more. The show will be south of the Antique Machinery Display. Also new this year, the Real Beal’s will provide strolling entertainment. The live, mechanical, husband-and-wife duo perform lively, interactive music that is educational and fun. The Milwaukee Flyers are making their debut at the Kenosha County Fair this year. The acrobatic group recruits inner city kids and helps youths exercise their minds as well as their bodies.

There really is someplace like home...
Security is an important part of both planning and running the annual Kenosha County Fair. The Kenosha County Fair Police is an organization that has existed since the advent of the fair. They are charged with the public safety of all the guests, volunteers, and staff during the fair as well as the races at the Wilmot Raceway, and other events held on the fairgrounds. The Fair Police officers (or public safety staff) handle all types of incidents at the fairgrounds including lost children, underage drinking, fighting as well as being on the front line with medical emergencies. The staff can detain individuals and refer them to the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department, who is also on the fairgrounds during the fair. The Fair Police also oversee the parking lot attendants during the five days of the fair. They wear red-logoed polo shirts so that they are easily identifiable to fair guests who need assistance. The Fair Police use the policies and

procedures of the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department, and all officers undergo training each year to stay educated and informed. The knowledge includes everything from crowd control to active shooter drills to drug enforcement. The Fair Police office is in the middle of the fairgrounds, directly north of the Marketplace building (formerly the Commercial Building). Guests can report lost items, receive first aid, and file complaints at this office. The Fair Police staff numbers close to 50 people, many of whom have been doing this job for over 20 years. There are husbandand-wife teams, sibling teams as well as multigenerational family members on the staff. The Chief of the Fair Police is Dan Madrigrano, whose tenure spans 30 years with the department. With safety and security being the No. 1 priority every year, the diligence and competence of the Fair Police staff is achieving this goal.

On stage at the fair!
Music and the Kenosha County Fair have traditionally gone hand in hand and this year is no exception. Headlining this year’s fair on the Creekside Stage are State Line Drive and Bella Cain on Friday and Saturday nights respectively. On the opening night of the fair, Wednesday, Aug. 18, the radio station 95 Will Rock (95.1FM) is presenting a Night at the Fair. The evening begins at 5 p.m. featuring Saving Able, Royal Bliss, Plush, The Almas and Day Rollers. The concerts are free with fair admission, but a VIP pass is available for $25. VIP tickets can be purchased at
95willrock.com. Thursday the Creekside Stage will feature the KR Bluegrass Band at 3 p.m. and Cherry Pie at 7:45 p.m. Friday night’s headliner, State Line Drive, take the stage at 8:30 p.m. The country-music band State Line Drive is made up of twin brothers, Mason and Micah Marrs, and Jordan and Joel Mills from Kansas City. Bella Cain, a Wisconsin Area Music Industry Country Group of the Year, is returning to the Kenosha County Fair for 2021, taking the Creekside Stage at 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 21. The popular country band was founded in 2010, and has shared the stage with
national headliners, including Brad Paisley, Miranda Lambert, Luke Bryan, Colt Ford, The Nelsons, Phil Vassar, BIG & RICH, Jason Aldean, Jerrod Nieman, Justin Moore, Lee Brice, Bucky Covington, Chris Cagle, Parmalee, Dustin Lynch, Dierks Bentley, Billy Currington, Joe Nichols, Phil Vasser, Glorianna, Jason Derulo, Little Big Town, Maggie Rose, Chris Young, Blake Shelton and The Oak Ridge Boys. Also appearing on the Creekside Stage Saturday will be Mackenzie O’Brien Band at noon. The final day of the fair, Aug. 22, the Doo Wop Daddies will perform at noon and Class of ’62 will close out the musical acts at 3 p.m.

What’s happening at the Grandstands? From tractor parade to the demo derby, the Grandstands at the Kenosha County Fair host the festival’s largest events.
This year the fun begins with the Truck and Tractor Combine Demolitions Derby at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, Aug. 18 and. Watch the trucks, tractors and semi’s compete in different divisions. The Combine Derby immediately follows the pulls. Before the Thursday night pulls/derby, the Antique Tractor Parade begins at 5 p.m. The parade features old engines, tractors, horse-drawn equipment, garden or farm equipment, tools and other farm related paraphernalia. Friday and Saturday nights are for racing at the Kenosha County Fair. Gates open at 5 p.m. with
racing beginning at 6:45 p.m. both nights. Modified, street stocks and bandits race Friday night. The evening will also have a Monster Truck demolition with car crushing, stunts, fireworks and more. Cost is $5 for those age 12 and older. Saturday is the Roger Iles Tribute featuring the Bumper to Bumper IRA Outlaw Spirit Series, plus WingLESS Springs and Lightning Sprints. Cost is $10 for those age 12 and older. The annual Demolition Derby will close out the entertainment at the Grandstands at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

Who’s the Fairest of them all? After the cancellation of the 2020 Kenosha County Fair because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the reigning 2020 Fairest of the Fair, Claire Fox, retained her crown for 2021. A new Fairest will be crowned for 2022 at this year’s fair at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 22, on the Creekside Stage. The Fairest of the Fair serves as an ambassador of the Kenosha County Fair

and represents the fair during a year of official duties, including appearances at local events and parades. The Fairest of the Fair is also awarded a $1,000 scholarship and a Lifetime Membership to the Kenosha County Fair. The Fairest of the Fair winner will reign from January 2022 to January 2023 and will represent Kenosha County Fair at the State of Wisconsin Fairest of the Fair competition in January 2023. This year, five candidates are vying for the crown – Chelsa Perleberg, Katelyn Hannah, Nicole Jackson, Shannon Diedrich and Paige Armbruster.
Shannon Diedrich
Paige Armbruster, of Kenosha, is the daughter of Angie Nelson and Don Armbruster. She is a Westosha Central High School graduate. She plans to return to college studies in 2022 and hopes to become an occupaational therapy assistant. Armbruster works full time at Tropical Tan and is a pet sitter.
Shannon Diedrich, of Twin Lakes, is the daughter of Philip and Kimberly Diedrich. She is a Wilmot Union High School and Carthage College graduate. She teaches sixth-grade science and math at Randall Consolidated School.

Nicole Jackson, of Kenosha, is the daughter of
Chelsa Perleberg, of Salem, is the daughter of Jeremy and Jennifer Perleberg. She is a Westosha Centeral High School graduate and is studying cosmetology at Gateway Technical College. Perleberg also works part time.
Keith and Shelly Jackson. She is a Westosha Central High School graduate and is attending the Milwaukee School of Engineering. She is studying to be an electrical engineer. Jackson is also employed full time.
Katelyn Hannah, of Salem, is the daughter of Christopher and Tracy Hannah. She is a Westosha Central High School graduate and is attending the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. She is studying to be a pediatrician. Hannah also works part time.
