4 Strings Attached Beautiful music from beautiful children

When the 4 Strings Attached violin group starts playing, listeners are often stunned children are producing the music they’re hearing. Playing a variety of music from classical works, patriotic songs, and just fun “fiddle” music, the performing group of violinists, who range in age from 4 to 18 years, is a delight to listen to. They do not appear as a group of children performing but as a composed professional group with stage presence. Members of the group are serious music students who have gained their skills at the Martin Lopez Academy where they learned the importance of taking their music seriously yet still having fun with it and enjoying the experience. For Lopez, music has always been part of his life. As the fourth generation of his family to play the violin, it is not surprising that he began to learn the instrument while very young. Starting around the age of 3, he began taking lessons at a prestigious private academy under the guidance of renowned violinist Betty Haag. Like many children, although he loved the violin there were times when he didn’t want to practice. “It was my mother who was the enforcer and saw to it
that I continued to practice,” Lopez said. “I would practice for up to five hours per day.” The work put into his violin training reaped its rewards when Lopez, at the age of 5, was included in a concert tour of Europe with Mrs. Haag’s performing group. By the age of 6, he performed a solo with the Chicago Symphony at their Petite Promenade Concert Series and was referred to as a “child prodigy.” Over his young years, he toured Europe with the performing group playing in a variety of countries including France, Germany, and Italy where the group performed in the Vatican for Pope John Paul II. So it is not surprising that Lopez would spend his time teaching others to play the violin and teach them to love it as he does. “I started at the Urban Gateway Program through the Chicago Public School System,” he said. “I spent a year teaching for Roosevelt University of Chicago in the College of Performing Arts. I have also taught at local park districts.” Lopez also started programs at Star of the Sea and Our Lady of the Snows schools on the south side of Chicago. He continues to run programs there although his main location now is in the McHenry/Crystal Lake area where he teaches the next
generation of professional musicians how to get the most beautiful music out of their violins. A place of his own In 2004 he opened his studio in McHenry where he teaches violin to children starting as young as 2-1/2 years of age. “As our students became more proficient, we decided to start 4 Strings Attached, a 501(c)(3) program where we could work with students and give them the opportunity to perform,” Lopez said. “We wanted to see them mature and have confidence in their ability to play for an audience. We also wanted to have them travel and learn about other cultures while they entertain.” After speaking to the parents of the students and explaining what he hoped to accomplish with the kids, the program began and has been very successful. The group plays for local events and has traveled out of the country to perform. The students pay a fee to be part of the group but most of the money needed for their travel comes from donations. Being a non-profit, donations may be tax deductible. They are currently working on raising funds for a trip to perform in Poland.

College of Lake County reports first positive case of COVID-19

It began as sort of an experiment to see how motivated they would be,” said Medina. “I was fortunate to have chosen a phenomenal teacher when we began lessons with Mr. Lopez.” In addition to the lessons, students at all levels are offered opportunities to perform at repertoire classes. “These group classes are available for academy members. They are held at the YMCA in Crystal Lake on Saturdays. These classes work on sound harmonization, stage presence, confidence, problem solving while on stage, and choreography to prepare them for on stage performing,” Lopez said. “Students who participate in these classes become much better and more confident performers.” For Salome Aguilar she began to encourage her son to enjoy music even before he was born. While pregnant she played classical music daily hoping that he would hear it. At the age of 5, her son Kristian began lessons with Martin Lopez’s sister, also a violinist, on the south side of Chicago. “By the age of 9 he was
enrolled in the Martin Lopez Academy. Kristian is a perfectionist and likes when he is playing correctly. He is pleased when he can hear an incorrect sound and correct it so it sounds right,” Aguilar said. “His interest in music continues to grow. He sings in the church choir and is taking voice lessons to further his musical ability. His dream is to go to Juilliard after high school. Now at the age of 14, Kristian sometimes helps Mr. Lopez with classes, something he really enjoys.” Lessons are usually given on a weekly basis for a half hour although some may take an hour lesson. Classes either private or group lessons are offered at the Martin Lopez Academy in McHenry, or at his Chicago studio in Summit. Repertoire classes are held on Saturdays in both Crystal Lake and in the Chicago studio. College of Lake County (CLC) administration learned of the first confirmed positive case of COVID-19 in its community late Wednesday, March 18, 2020. The individual’s last date on campus was March 12, 2020. The employee is quarantined and is actively assisting the college with next steps. The college is currently collecting information from the employee regarding activities and contacts made during their last work week. The administration is in consultation and coordination with the CLC Health Center and the Lake County Health Department (LCHD). The college will follow LCHD and U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidance in managing the situation and in working with individuals who are potentially impacted. At this time, CLC officials are aware of five individuals who had direct exposure to the employee. Those individuals will receive communication from CLC today. President Dr. Lori Suddick stated, “CLC is committed to doing everything we can to ensure this situation is handled quickly, carefully, and compassionately.” The college has verified that the spaces the employee came in contact within the building have been deep

COVID-19 emergency measures at the 19th Judicial Circuit Court Effective Tuesday, March, 17, 2020, and in light of the Coronavirus Pandemic, and in order to protect the health and safety of the general public, judges and court employees, and after consultation with the offices of the Lake County State’s Attorney, Public Defender, Sheriff, Clerk of the Circuit Court, County Board, and pursuant to Illinois Supreme Court Rule 21(b) and the Court’s inherent authority; IT IS HEREBY ORDERED that except as provided below, all matters in the 19th Judicial Circuit, Lake County, Illinois, are rescheduled and continued for 28 days from the originally scheduled court date unless the 28th day falls on a weekend, in which case, it shall be continued until the following business day, unless otherwise determined by the assigned judge. lated matters scheduled in 19th Judicial Circuit court facilities are canceled and shall be rescheduled by the appropriate authority. MARRIAGES: Marriages and Civil Unions will not be performed at the courthouse during this period, including Saturdays and Sundays. KIDS KORNER (CHILDREN’S WAITING ROOM): The waiting room will be closed during this period. MATTERS: OTHER Non-essential gatherings and meetings are canceled. Programs of the 19th Judicial Circuit Court including, but not limited to, Family Mediation, Children First, Traffic Safety School, Victim Impact Panel, and Public Service Employment are continued during this period. SUMMONSES: All Summonses with return dates between March 17, 2020 and April 17, 2020, are rescheduled and continued for 28 days from the originally scheduled court date unless the 28th day falls on a weekend, in which case, it shall be continued until the following business day shall be returnable upon notice of the Clerk of the Circuit Court. The Court may issue further Orders, as necessary, to address the changing circumstances surrounding the COVID-19 Pandemic. Summoned jurors are not expected to automatically report; however, they will be required to call 847-2495879. Jurors will only be asked to report if there is a need to address a speedy trial issue, until further notice. These are precautionary measures only. The health and welfare of all employees and courthouse users is our priority. As more information becomes available or if there are changes to court operations, we will advise.

Mathews takes oath of office for Circuit Judge
“It is my honor and my pleasure to swear in such a talented Jurist,” said Justice Michael J. Burke. Illinois Supreme Court Justice Burke administered the Circuit Judge Oath of Office to Reginald C. Mathews for the 1st Subcircuit of the Nineteenth Judicial Circuit on March 2, 2020; his term will conclude on December 5, 2022. Mathews will fill the position previously held by Judge Jay W. Ukena, who retired from his post as Circuit Judge on January 30, 2020. To maintain his position as Circuit Judge after December 5, 2022, Mathews must be nominated in the 1st Subcircuit in the March 2022 primary and elected in the November 2022 general election. “I would like to thank the Illinois Supreme Court for making the unanimous decision to appoint me to the Office of Circuit Judge. FDA asks Americans to donate blood; AG’s office can help with utility issues; new guidance for pot dispensaries By Rebecca Anzel CAPITOL NEWS ILLINOIS
The leader of the Illinois Health and Hospital Association asked other industries to donate masks, gloves, gowns and other personal protective equipment to the more than 200 hospitals across the state as they treat patients for the novel coronavirus disease, COVID-19. Health care workers are “in jeopardy of potentially running out” of those supplies,” A.J. Wilhelmi, the association’s president, said in a statement March 19. “With continuing uncertainties about global and U.S. supplies of face masks, we urgently need to find alternative supplies, no matter where they are, so our hospitals can continue to provide life-saving care to current and future COVID-19 patients,” he said. Wilhelmi sent a request to dentists, veterinarians, construction companies and others who might have stockpiles of such equipment, which protect nurses, doctors and other health care personnel when treating and evaluating patients. Maintaining blood
supply ‘critical’ The federal Food and Drug Administration is calling on Americans to continue “generously” donating blood during the COVID-19 pandemic. A patient in the U.S. needs a blood transfusion every two seconds, according to the agency, and while officials support social distancing initiatives, that need does not decrease in such times. “People who donate blood are equivalent to those people who are working in a critical infrastructure industry,” Dr. Peter Marks, the director of the FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, said in a statement March 19. “... They are contributing immeasurably to the public health of our nation.” It is safe to donate blood at a center because “they are skilled in infection control practices,” Marks added, and centers have preventative plans to handle infection spread. Those interested could schedule an appointment and receive a call when the center is ready for the donor. According to the FDA, the following organizations can help Americans interested in

However, veterinarians recommend pet owners maintain “proper human hygiene” when tending to their animals. Hand sanitizers, disinfectant wipes and other cleaning methods should be employed after interacting with pets, but ISVMA Board of Directors President Dr. Olivia Rudolphi warned they cannot be used directly on or around pets. “The best practice that any pet owner can currently follow is to take care of themselves first by following proper personal hygiene
when dealing with this outbreak,” Rudolphi said. “... Limiting your pet’s exposure to individuals and other pets will help keep coronavirus— or any pathogen—from spreading from host to host, be it human or animal.” She added owners should avoid kisses from and sharing beds with pets, especially if people in the household are showing signs of illness. AG: Contact office about utility issues Attorney General Kwame Raoul urged Illinoisans to contact his office about utility disconnections or disruptions. Utility companies were mandated to delay service disconnections and waive late fees by an Illinois Commerce Commission emergency order issued March 18. That moratorium applies to electric gas, water and sewage services. “It is important that Illinois residents follow guidance issued by public health authorities in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19, which may mean staying home— potentially for extended periods of time,” Raoul said in a written statement March 19.
“Being shut off from utility service is the last thing people should worry about as they work remotely, care for vulnerable populations, or self-quarantine.” The commission’s order applies to public companies in Illinois, not to municipally-owned ones. The attorney general asked those entities to comply with the moratorium anyway. Marijuana guidance Illinois officials issued guidance March 17 allowing medical marijuana dispensaries to sell products on the curb or in parking lots adjacent to their stores. Recreational product sales must still be made in a “limited access area.” The Department of Financial and Professional Regulation also instructed staff to keep customers at least six feet from one another, and mandated facilities to regularly clean surfaces most touched by customers, including door handles and ordering screens.
“Our top priority is to minimize the risk of and protect as many people from exposure to COVID-19,” Toi Hutchinson, Gov. JB Pritzker’s senior advisor for cannabis control, said in a statement. “These steps prioritize that critical objective, while also ensuring medical patients have access to the medicine they need.” A provision in the statute legalizing adult-use recreational marijuana requires dispensaries keep enough product for medical patients at all times, at least eight facilities opted not to continue selling to recreational customers, a spokesperson said. IDFPR inspectors “will continue to monitor cameras inside dispensaries daily to ensure continued compliance” with the department’s rules, according to a news release. “IDFPR expects dispensaries to answer inspectors’ calls or call them back promptly,” it added. Cannabis Business Association of Illinois Executive Director Pamela Althoff said the guidance was issued after collaboration between the industry and Pritzker’s administration.

Altenberg appointed to District 20 County Board
At its March 10 meeting, Lake County Board Chair Sandy Hart appointed Marah Altenberg to fill the District 20 County Board seat left vacant by the resignation of Adam Didech in January. Altenberg, a long-time resident of Buffalo Grove, works as the Youth Community Director for North Suburban Synagogue Beth El in Highland Park. Her professional background in-
cludes working as a journalist for many years and covering Lake County for Pioneer Press. Illinois law requires the county board chair, with the advice and consent of the county board, to appoint a qualified individual to fill a vacancy on the county board within 60 days. Per state law, the appointee must be of the same political party as the seat’s predecessor. Accordingly, the chair was re-
quired to appoint a Democrat. Following Didech’s resignation due to personal health reasons, Hart established an advisory committee that included three county board members (Vice Chair Mary Ross-Cunningham, Jennifer Clark and Julie Simpson) as well as Chairman of the Lake County Democratic Party State Senator Terry Link. The panel reviewed applications from nine candi-
dates, conducted in-person interviews with four individuals, and recommended Altenberg for the appointment. “I am pleased to recommend Marah Altenberg to fill the vacant seat in District 20,” Hart said. “During the interview process, she demonstrated a clear commitment to her community. Her knowledge of Lake County and our board make her an excellent fit. As a journal-
ist, she has written about our county’s tax, infrastructure and other issues for more than two decades. I am confident that she will faithfully serve the interests of her constituents and that she will be an asset to our board.” Didech’s term was not due to expire until November of 2022. However, per state law, Altenberg’s appointment will be through November of 2020, at which time voters will elect
a permanent replacement. As part of her appointment, Altenberg will serve on the board’s Energy and Environment Committee, Health and Community Services Committee, Legislative Committee, Rules Committee and Housing and Community Development Commission. She will also serve as an alternate member of the Lake County Stormwater Management Commission.

Lake County Health Department updates on COVID-19 The Lake County Health Department is reporting 15 new cases of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Lake County since Saturday, March 21. This brings the total number of Lake County residents testing positive for the disease to 80 since the first Lake County case was identified on March 11, 2020. “Please be vigilant against the spread of this disease by staying home,” said Mark Pfister, Lake County Health Department Executive Director. “If you do need to go out, whether to provide an essential service to our community, to purchase necessities, or to receive medical care, take every precaution to distance yourself at least six feet away from others, cover your cough or sneeze, and wash your hands frequently.” While public demand for COVID-19 testing remains high, testing is currently only available to high-risk individuals, including people currently hospitalized and those who live or work in congregate settings like long-term health facilities or group homes.
“Let me be perfectly clear – at this time, testing is not available in Illinois for everyone who wants it,” Pfister emphasized. “Instead, everyone needs to follow the ‘stay at home’ order issued by our governor and take social distancing seriously.
