Lovin’ Oven could come to Antioch By Gail Peckler-Dziki CORRESPONDENT
Ken and Matt Slove, proprietors of Lovin’ Ovens, appeared at the July 26 Village of Antioch Committee of the Whole meeting to seek a grant to help the move into the downtown area. Ken and his wife, Betty, are the owners and son Matt serves as the general manager. The site is the former Hannah’s site on Lake Street. Antioch Mayor Larry Hanson said he had been working on helping Lovin’ Ovens to move its headquarters to Antioch for several months. The plan calls for the renovation of the 39,000-square‐foot space including the roof, which was an unexpected cost. The original price was $1.1 million, but the building was in bad repair. Slove, who negotiated a lower price, said the realtor told him that the roof was only five years old. The roof report, however, turned out to be false after an inspection revealed the roof wasn’t valid. Slove, who told the board the original plans were pared down to refit and repair the structure, but came up $250,000 short. “There are a number of changes we would like to make that can wait a few years,” said Slove, who seeks a grant. Without the grant, the Sloves can’t move the Lovin’ Oven Cakery to Antioch. The Sloves, who graduated from Antioch Community High School, reportedly want the busi-

ness in their hometown. “This is our hometown community,” he said, “and we want to locate here.” Slove said 35 of his full-time employees would move to the new location and retain their jobs. If they move, five new full-time jobs with annual salaries of $30,000 and 15 part-time jobs with a starting salary of $11 would be created. “We love this community,” Slove
said. “We support Open Arms Mission and we donate pancake batter to all non-profits for pancake breakfast fundraisers.” Hanson said that this project would jumpstart the revitalization of the downtown and have a positive impact on other downtown businesses. “Mr. Slove has been upfront and honest about his difficulties. The building has so many problems.” Village administrator Jim Keim
said there was enough money in the budget to allow for the grant. During discussion, all board members seemed to agree that it was a good idea to give the grant to Slove. They were assured that Slove intended to stay long-term in Antioch. Keim said he believed that through sales tax, the village would recoup the grant amount. The grant was needed immediately, since Slove intended to close on the property at the end of July.

Area resident Roy Olsen negotiates a deal with seller Kim Mirocko during the Antioch Woman’s Club Community-Wide Garage Sale held at Williams Park, 741 Main St., on Saturday, Aug. 5. For a $20 donation, anyone could reserve a 10-square foot space to sell their items with the vendors keeping all the profits. Almost 60 tables were in use at the event which was held to benefit the Open Arms Mission Food Pantry, 1548 S. Main St. in Antioch. Donation bins were also available for non-perishable food items and paper products. AWC members said the club is already planning on holding a second, even larger garage sale next year possibly requiring additional space in the park’s second pavilion. Lake County offers reminders on pedestrian safety for drivers
Chain ‘O Lakes restriction lifted
On Aug. 4, restrictions on Zone A (the Fox River from Algonquin to the Stratton Lock and Dam) have been lifted and have gone to no wake status. Additionally, Zones B and C (the upper river from North of Stratton Lock and Damn to
Pistakee Lake, and the entire Chain ‘O Lakes) are now open for FULL boating. A debris advisory for the entire system remains in effect. Officials suggest staying cautious and report any debris to the Fox Waterway Agency.
Flooded forest preserve trails are increasing the volume of runners, walkers and cyclists on the roadways. Remember, the rules of the road when there is a crosswalk: When approaching a pedestrian with a disability who is utilizing a guide dog, a cane, a wheelchair or other assistance device on
a sidewalk or roadway, the pedestrian has the right-ofway and is granted the same rights as any pedestrian. A driver must come to a complete stop and yield: • When a pedestrian is in a marked crosswalk. • On school days, when children are in close proximity to a school zone crosswalk.
• When a pedestrian is in an unmarked crosswalk on the driver’s side of the roadway and there are no traffic control signals. • When making a turn at any intersection. • When making a lawful turn on a red light after coming to a complete stop. • After coming to a complete stop at a stop sign or
flashing red signal at an intersection. • When a pedestrian enters a crosswalk before the traffic light changed. • When a pedestrian is leaving or entering a street or highway from an alley, building, private road or driveway. • When a pedestrian is entering an intersection with a flashing yellow arrow.
