Man accused of selling crack near Antioch High

Park sees revival Centennial Park reopens Centennial Park in Antioch underwent a revival in 2017, when a group of volunteers repaired and restored the 25-year-old park, courtesy of Northbridge Church. The park opened nearly 25 years ago on a vision by residents Ted and Vicky Axton. In 1992, the Axtons, with cooperation from the village of Antioch, and more than 2,000 people, volunteered to construct the park. Since then, the park has been one of the busiest within Antioch, but needed restoration. Enter in Northbridge Church volunteers, who restored the park as part of their annual Sharefest project, which brought in more than 200 volunteers to revive Centennial Park.

Volunteers replaced lumber where needed, stained the structure with mops and spread 165 cubic yards of mulch to prepare the park by Sunday’s grand re-opening date. Although the Axtons were out of town, members of both Northridge Church and the Antioch Parks Board teamed up to welcome residents to the revived park Sunday. Rob Hardman, the Axtons sonin-law, represented the family. Representing Northridge Church in the ribbon cutting were pastors Mark Albrecht and Dawn Hayman. Antioch Parks board member Ron Horton, Mayor Larry Hanson, and trustee Jerry Johnson represented the village.

A 36-year-old Antioch man was arrested and charged with multiple drug offenses, including one within 300-feet of Antioch Community High School, after a four-week sting operation. Jason D. Stackhouse, who allegedly sold crack to an undercover detective on several occasions, was taken into custody on June 21 and transported to the Jason D. Lake County Jail. Stackhouse Stackhouse, currently held on a $100,000 bail, is scheduled to appear in Lake County Court on July 12. “On several separate occasions over the past month Stackhouse sold crack cocaine to an undercover Gang Task Force Detective,” the release states. “One of the sales took place within 300 feet of a school.” Stackhouse is charged with one count of unlawful possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver - within 1,000 feet of a school (class X felony), six counts of unlawful possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver (class 1 felonies), and six counts of unlawful possession of a controlled substance (class 4 felonies).

Living History Open House scheduled for July

The Powers-Walker House Historic Landmark will have a “Living History Open House: 1850s and WWI” event from noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday, July 16, at the house in Glacial Park, 6316 Harts Road, Ringwood. Tour the restored Greek revival house circa 1854 and learn more about the Powers and Walker families that called this area home. Volunteers in historical attire will be on hand to answer questions, offer tours and demonstrate skills appropriate to the season. There will be several special presentations during the event focusing on the history of the house, its residents and the region during World War I. There will be a remembrance of Clara Miller Hermance, a former resident of the house, and piece together what daily life was like during the early 1900s at 2 p.m. Visit with World War I re-enactors as they discuss the role of “our boys” and display original war equipment. Learn how War Bonds, Victory Gardens, Liberty Cabbage, Cities for Jobs, Cut-A-Cord, Oaths of Conservation, and concerns about water quality affected life at Powers-Walker house and the area during this time. “kite” fell, hitting a nearby brother on the shoulder. This launched a battle. The capekites became weapons, as towels are obviously wont to be, and the boys swatted at each other, again whooping and hollering when the onslaught became particularly intense or immensely fun. Before I could decide whether they were fighting with imaginary swords or light sabers, the towel underwent another change as their duel shifted seamlessly into a tug of war. Three doesn’t work well for tug of war, so their mom, who had been sitting near them on the shoreline, jumped in, helping the youngest on his side of the battle. Their tug of war tugged at my heart. This mom on the beach was me. Is me. I am her. The future her. These boys at the lake today reminded me of my three sons who were young boys playing similar games on the same beach just a few years ago while I watched diligently – ensuring safety, playing referee, dispensing sunscreen, handing out freeze pops. Their energy was and is invigorating. Their creativity inspiring. Especially in this era of electronic everything, I am glad kids can still play the old fashioned way on a summer day at the lake by taking something as simple as a beach towel and making it be whatever they imagine it to be. And I’m glad I got to sit on the sidelines today and witness it happen. They were splashing in the waist-high water of the lake. Boisterous and loud. Three boys on either side of about 10 years old – if my estimate was accurate. I sat on the dock, observing from a distance. The sun shone from behind a splattering of light cloud cover in the otherwise blue sky. The wind blew steadily – stronger than usual – cooling the warm summer air, causing waves and even a few whitecaps on the lake. For once I could watch without the responsibility for maintaining safety in the water. These boys reminded me of my own and their energy was familiar but they themselves were not. They were just three young boys, playing in the water with their own mom and dad watching them from the shore. They had numerous toys at their availability lying on the grass. Instead they chose to dunk and tackle. Every once in awhile one of them would let out a whoop of victory when he’d ambushed one of his brothers in an especially covert dunk, in their timeless game of rowdy roughhousing and unrestrained childhood fun. After everyone had been sufficiently dunked, they retreated to shore, donning beach towels with the intention of drying their shoulders. But the games hadn’t ended yet. The wind unexpectedly blew beneath a towel and soon one of them was running across the lawn, holding the terry cloth to his shoulders while it lifted in the wind behind him, like a makeshift a Superman cape. Another of the boys followed, and another and before you can say kryptonite, the three of them were transformed into flying superheroes running along the shoreline. As the capes flew higher in the wind, the towels became kites and the boys pulled and tugged on the “strings,” which were actually the towels, in order to keep their imaginary kites airborne and reaching for the clouds. The wind shifted and one

DOT announces closure The Lake County Division of Transportation plans to close Cedar Lake Road, from Illinois Route 120 to Nippersink Road, to through traffic starting Wednesday, July 5 at 7 a.m. and will remain closed through the end of August. The closure is necessary to replace the Squaw Creek culvert. This work is part of the project to reconstruct Cedar Lake Road from Illinois

Route 120 to Nippersink Road. Additionally, the plan is to reconstruct the road from 2 lanes to 3 lanes of pavement to accommodate a center turn lane. This project will include a new multi-use path with a connection to the Forest Preserve. In 2017, much of the construction for this project will be limited to a large culvert replacement in Squaw Creek,

The Lake County Sheriff’s Marine Unit is participating in ‘Operation Dry Water’ boating safety campaign from June 30 - July 2, 2017. During the boating safety campaign, Sheriff’s Marine Unit Deputies will add extra safety patrols, ticketing those operating watercrafts in a careless or reckless manner. Additionally, Marine Unit Deputies will keep a watchful eye for those who make the decision to operate a watercraft while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. ‘Operation Dry Water’ is sponsored by NASBLA in partnership with the United States Coast Guard.

The Antioch Chamber will host the free “Taste of Summer” carnival and sidewalk craft sales from Thursday, July 20, through Sunday, July 23, in Downtown Antioch, Main St., Antioch. The four-day carnival will include music, food rides, carnival games, exhibitors and sidewalk sales. Times, days and events are as follows: • The celebration will be from 4 to 10 p.m. on Thursday, July 20. Musical performers will be “The Neverly Brothers” from 7 to 10 p.m. • The celebration will be from 4 to 11 p.m. on Friday, July 21. Musical performers will be “Suburban Cowboys” from 8 to 11 p.m. • The celebration will be from noon to 11 p.m. on Saturday, July 22. Musical performers will be “American English” from noon to 3 p.m., “Modern Day Romeos” from 4 to 7 p.m. and “Hi Infidelity” from 8 to 11 p.m. The birthday celebration will begin at 9:30 p.m. and will include a balloon drop, cake and more. • The celebration will be from noon to 7 p.m. on Sunday, July 23. Musical performers will be “7th Heaven” from 3 to 6 p.m. The carnival will be open until 8 p.m. Attendees can purchase a “Mega Pass Wristband” that is good for the entire carnival for $50 in advance or for $60 at the festival. Colorado man drowns in Lake Leopold A 19-year-old Colorado man died a day after authorities rescued him from Lake Leopold in the Prairie Crossing neighborhood near the intersection of Levi Baxter Street and Prairie Trail, the Lake County coroner reports. The man, identified as Yhalayea Cornelius Kumahn, of Aurora, Col., reportedly struggled to swim on June 21 at about 5:45 p.m., when Grayslake Fire Protection District pulled him from about nine feet of water at 6:10 p.m. Bystanders attempted to help him stay afloat, but were unsuccessful. The fire department arrived at 5:51 p.m. and attempted to rescue the victim, the coroner’s release states.

From there, authorities transported him to Advocate Condell Hospital in critical condition, but he was pronounced dead shortly before 2 a.m. on June 22. Dr. Howard Cooper, the Lake County coroner, concluded the man died of drowning. “The preliminary results of the autopsy confirm that his cause of death is drowning. The toxicology results are pending,” Dr. Cooper stated. “Our sincerest condolences go out to the family of Mr. Kumahn. When tragedies like this strike, we are reminded that this time of year we need to talk about swimmer safety to anyone heading into the water.”

Niece struggles with taking care of her aunt and herself Dear W.C., I’ve been helping and caring for my elderly aunt for three years but now I am having my own health problems and cannot help her financially any longer. My aunt raised me and I consider her my mother. She has no children of her own and I am the only relative left that was able to help her. My son and I share a three-bedroom apartment with her. I have been going through treatment for ovarian cancer and it has forced me to give up my job. We were able to get by until my unemployment ran out. I was declined for assistance because of my past income so I have reapplied and I am waiting on their determination. My car was recently repossessed because I couldn’t keep up with the payments. Our rent is late. I have always been a hard worker and had a lot of energy. I am trying to get that energy back so I can go back to work but I just completed chemotherapy and my second surgery. The doctor says I’m in remission but it will take some time for me to feel like myself again. I have never asked for help before. I am always the one volunteering to help others but I know this is something I can’t do on my own. Could you please help us so we do not become homeless and living without utilities? Dear Readers, We continue to help many people with cancer and other very serious health problems. It is a cause for much suffering in our communities. Thank God we can be there to help our fellow creations during their time of pain and suffering. I went to the address provided on the letter and found it to be in a nice apartment complex. When I rang the door buzzer it was answered by who I assumed to be the son and after I told him through the speaker who I was I heard the door buzz. I walked into the apartment building hallway and saw three

people standing down the hall. They all waved and we greeted each other in the hallway. The elderly woman that was introduced to me as the aunt said, “Come in. Come in.” The woman that introduced herself as the niece that had written the letter added, “Yes. Let’s not all stand in the hall and talk.” The son looked to be about 12-years-old and shook my hand. They all led the way into the apartment. The aunt moved slowly and chatted with me when I offered my arm and helped her inside the apartment. She told me she had severe arthritis and I noticed her wincing as she lowered herself into a chair. The niece made sure she was comfortable and then asked if I would like to sit in the chair next to the aunt. I could see the tall tale signs that the niece was not feeling that well herself. She had short tufts of hair showing from underneath a baseball cap. She also had dark rings around her eyes and looked to be very thin. I could see why she had not been able to return to work yet. The son asked if he could be excused to his room and the after the mother gave her permission the boy politely said goodbye to me and left the adults to talk. I was sure he did not need to hear about the details of his mother and aunt’s health problems nor their financial distress. The niece and aunt gave me some background on their relationship over the years and I could see they had a special bond. The aunt had been struggling to live on her own for years previous so they had decided then it would work out best for all of them to live together. The aunt had helped with watching the son after school while the

niece worked. She also paid the utilities and other expenses they could stretch her small social security to. The niece had paid the rent, did household chores and made sure the aunt ate properly. Now that the niece was no longer able to work she was not able to contribute to the rent, utilities or food budgets. The aunt’s social security was not enough to pay the rent on a three-bedroom apartment and their other expenses. The niece shared her journey through her surgeries and chemotherapy. She spared no detail on her surgical recovery problems and the side effects suffered. I knew that was the reason she was struggling, to regain her strength and energy again. I asked the niece when the doctor said she could return to work and she said, “He thinks I should be feeling better even in a few weeks but he wants me to wait at least a month. I told him I didn’t think we could make it financially until then and that’s when he told me about you. I have never asked for help my whole life. My aunt raised me to be self-sufficient and strong. This illness has brought me to my knees.” I saw both the aunt and the niece were fighting tears. The aunt sniffed and wiping her eyes said, “This is the same cancer her mother died from. That’s why I took her in when she was just 10-years-old. Back then we didn’t really know that much about genetic cancers. My Mom died from breast cancer when I was just a child too. I was tested when my niece was diagnosed and I do not have the cancer gene. This cancer gene has caused our family a lot of grief and pain. I’m just so thankful they were able to catch it early in my niece because I don’t know what I would do if I lost her too.” The aunt and niece reached for each other’s hands and were crying as they looked at each other. I handed both of the women tissues and waited
