Arts and crafts fair scheduled for summer
Antioch will host an “Arts and Crafts Faire” from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 17, and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, June 18, in Downtown Antioch, Main St. and Orchard St., Antioch. There will be over 85 booths, food and artists. Saturday activities include: • Children’s free face painting from noon to 2 p.m. • Children’s free balloon art from noon to 2 p.m. • Cha Cha the Rainforest mascot will meet people from noon to 2 p.m.

Department to come together in an informal, neutral space to discuss community issues, build relationships and drink coffee. Gardening with my gloves off Lately my hands have taken a beating and I’ve got no one to blame but myself. It happens around this time each year. Spring has sprung and all that jazz. With spring comes gardening and gardening comes with a cost – to my poor bare hands. Simply put, gardening involves dirt and dirt is, well, dirty. It gets under your fingernails and sneaks into crooks and crevices you didn’t even know existed. I scrub with a toothbrush (not the one I use for my teeth) to remove any residual remnants of lingering soil. I soak my fingers and scrub some more and then douse my hands in sanitizing

gel as an extra precaution. Cleanliness is next to gardening-ness; I think that’s how it goes. Gardening also involves objects of nature like twigs and thorns, which can scrape and scratch the skin. So far this year I’ve nicked a finger, found mysterious abrasions on my thumb and removed numerous slivers – all minor wounds and part
of a gardener’s day on the job. My husband disagrees. He thinks I go about this gardening thing in the wrong way. He believes I am neglecting to use two necessary and essential pieces of equipment: gloves. One for my right hand and one for my left. When he works in the yard, he wears gloves. It is the prudent and professional thing to do. It also keeps black dirt from getting under your fingernails. I know this. I have gloves. More than one pair, even. I try to wear them, but sometimes they get tossed aside or forgotten in the
garage. I have my reasons. First, they are hot. Most often I garden on warm and sunny days. I dislike sweaty palms more than I dislike slivers (although it’s a close call). Second, and more importantly, gloves keep my hands from getting dirty. For me, gardening is as much about the process as it is about the outcome. I love the feel of fresh and fertile earth on my fingertips when digging or planting. I carefully detangle and separate root balls before placing them in the cool soil. I tug at a weed, coaxing its taproot
from deep underground. I sow tender sprouts or rows of tiny seeds. It’s hard to do these tasks when you’re wearing gloves. Still, I know there are good reasons why I should follow the rules. There can be some icky unknowns in the soil that no one wants under their fingernails. Me included. So as with most things in life, I try to do the right thing – sort of. I attempt to be prudent – mostly. Other times, I realize life is short. I can garden with my gloves on and miss out on having the fresh soil under my fingers or I can live life on the wild side – thorns and
all. It’s a day-by-day (sometimes minuteby-minute) decision. But it’s mine to make; it’s all of ours to make. Understanding that that is even better than yanking out a huge taproot or holding a ball of black dirt in the palm of your hand. After a successful public art installation of fire hydrants throughout the Village of Fox Lake last summer, the Village has announced 2017’s lighthouse themed “Light the Way” project. In response, the village is looking for artists to submit their designs through May 31, 2017, 12 chosen lighthouses will shine in the streets of downtown Fox Lake from ear-
ly July through October 2017. “We were so thrilled with our first annual outdoor public art exhibit consisting of unique fire hydrants in downtown Fox Lake, we knew this would become an annual thing,” says Donovan Day, Community Development Director, Village of Fox Lake. “Public art really brings the community together and makes our downtown more vibrant. It’s a win/win!” The village is currently seeking eligible artists to participate in this public art exhibit through May 31 with
designs being reviewed by an independent panel of judges on June 1. Selected artists will be announced June 2nd via www. foxlake.org. Walking tours will be available throughout the installation and a celebratory event and auction will be held at the end of the installation (date and details TBA.) Artists will be on hand to discuss their process and vision. Artists will receive 40 percent of money raised from the auction and the additional dollars will help fund the art community in Fox Lake.

Long-time educator retires from Prince of Peace School Brown served as principal
After nearly five decades in education, Prince of Peace Catholic School principal Bonnie Brown has decided to call it a career, effective June 15 when class dismisses for the summer. Of Brown’s 47 years, which started in 1970 as a social studies teacher in Philadelphia, Brown served as Prince of Peace principal for eight years. “I have had a wonderful life as an educator. Over the years, I have had the opportunity to work in every grade from kindergarten through college,” Brown states in a news release. “With the wholehearted support of my loving family, I have had the opportunity to share my faith, teach young people and meet hundreds of people.” After her time in Philadelphia, where she also worked for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia as an assistant to the Director of Youth Services, Brown taught at Resurrection High School for Girls in Chicago. From there, Brown moved to Mother Guerin High School in River Grove, where she went from assistant principal to principal. While at Mother Guerin, she helped estab-
lish Guerin College Prep School, launched in 2004. Five years later, Brown arrived to Prince of Peace Catholic School. “Under her direction, Prince of Peace became a nationally recognized Blue Ribbon School of Excellence in 2014,” the press release states. “State test scores have risen during Mrs. Brown’s time at the school, and facility improvements have allowed students to further flourish.” Additionally, Brown garnered honors at the national level, including an award from the National Service Learning Association. Also, she received the National Catholic Education Award as the outstanding high school educator in the Great Lakes region. As Brown moves on, the long-time educator believes Prince of Peace Catholic School can carry on the tradition of excellence. “Parental support and assistance are a critical component to a great school,” she states in the news release. “Prince of Peace Catholic School has met all challenges and continued to embrace the mission of the school. World War II themed fundraiser The Grayslake Heritage Center Foundation will host a World War II themed fundraiser from 6:30 to 10 p.m. on Friday, June 9, at Brae Loch Country Club, 3600 North US Highway 45, Grayslake. From there, Brown moved to Mother Guerin High School in River Grove, where she went from assistant principal to principal. While at Mother Guerin, she helped establish Guerin College Prep School, launched in 2004. Five years later, Brown arrived to Prince of Peace Catholic School. “Under her direction, Prince of Peace became a nationally recognized Blue Ribbon School of Excellence in 2014,” the press release states. “State test scores have risen during Mrs. Brown’s time at the school, and facility improvements have allowed students to further flourish.”
Additionally, Brown garnered honors at the national level, including an award from the National Service Learning Association. Also, she received the National Catholic Education Award as the outstanding high school educator in the Great Lakes region. As Brown moves on, the long-time educator believes Prince of Peace Catholic School can carry on the tradition of excellence. “Parental support and assistance are a critical component to a great school,” she states in the news release. “Prince of Peace Catholic School has met all challenges and continued to embrace the mission of the school. After nearly five decades in education, Prince of Peace Catholic School principal Bonnie Brown has decided to call it a career, effective June 15 when class dismisses for the summer. Of Brown’s 47 years, which started in 1970 as a social studies teacher in Philadelphia, Brown served as Prince of Peace principal for eight years. “I have had a wonderful life as an educator. Over the years, I have had the opportunity to work in every grade from kindergarten through college,” Brown states in a news release. “With the wholehearted support of my loving family, I have had the opportunity to share my faith, teach young people and meet hundreds of people.” After her time in Philadelphia, where she also worked for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia

Twin Lakes to wrangle resident geese Summer round-up targeted

In the last 25 years, the resident Canada geese population has exploded in Wisconsin, the Department of Natural Resources reports. The Village of Twin Lakes, according to some lakefront property owners is one of the areas experiencing the explosion, which led the Lake Protection and Rehabilitation District to approve a federal permit to wrangle geese and remove from the premises at its Monday Commissioners’ Meeting. The contract with the United States Department of Agriculture-Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service calls for a federal permit not to exceed $4,500. Resident geese are birds most associated with nuisance problems, since they breed and live in Wisconsin almost year-round, only leaving briefly during harsh winter weather. “These are the ones that stay here, they don’t go south,” said USDA Wildlife Biologist Dave Tarrall, who delivered a presentation before Lake Protection and Rehabilitation District commissioners. “They are easily adaptable, living next to humans, you obviously know that.” In addition to nuisance concerns, Tarrall reports res-

According to the presentation, 70 resident geese equate to 70 pounds of feces per day, and could lead to soil erosion, reduced water quality and increase municipal maintenance costs. Also, Tarrall states resident geese have attributed to traffic accidents and threat of bird strikes by aircraft. “If anybody has ever been chased around by a goose, I know I have, there are traffic incidents…major highways that are closed down because they are crossing the road,” Tarrall said. Management approaches Aside from rounding up geese, there were other methods discussed, most notably scare tactics and repellants along with landscape changes. Among the list of repellants and tactics are distress calls, scare devices, pyrotechnics, taste repellants, trained dogs, remote control aircraft and predator decoys. However, Tarrall said non-lethal methods lose effectiveness as time progresses. “Distress calls, that can work for awhile,” he said. “A lot of these non-lethal methods, you can’t use one of them only. A lot of times, they will lose their effectiveness.”
