Antioch man dies in crash involving Central school bus Three students suffer minor injuries, school said

An Illinois man is dead and three Westosha Central High School students inside a school bus suffered minor injuries after a Friday morning crash in the 24500 block of Wilmot Road. The crash happened when the bus carrying 19 children stopped to pick up a student along its route around 7 a.m. As the student sat down, a van reportedly driven by a 21-year-old Antioch man traveling westbound rear-ended the bus, which in turn, killed him. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Kenosha County Medical Examiner. “From the pictures I have seen on the accident, it would appear that the van was traveling probably at the speeds of the road,” Sheriff David Beth said at a Friday afternoon news conference in Kenosha. The posted speed limit is 55 mph on Highway C, which closed between Highway 83 and 258th Avenue while authorities investigated the crash. “It was a work van, it had a granite or another countertop in the back of it,” Beth said. “It slide into the back of the bus, and the engine compartment went under the back bumper of the bus.” Along with Salem Lakes
Fire and Rescue, four other departments responded to the scene, where students received transportation to the fire station in Trevor. Meanwhile, as rescue personnel responded, Westosha Central immediately alerted parents of the crash and sent two faculty members to the fire station to offer support to students. “Our Associate Principal, Peter Haubrich and Guidance Counselor Keith Olsen were on site working with students and parents when parents came to pick up students at the fire station,” District Administrator Scott Pierce states in an email. Beth, whose daughter attends Westosha Central, but does not use the bus, said the crash triggered his parental instincts. “As soon as I heard it on the radio, the police senses and the parent senses kicked in,” he said. “My daughter goes to Central High School and shortly after the accident, parents got the call notification right away.” Beth credited the school’s response. Pierce said two of the 19 students involved in the crash reported to classes Friday. Pending notification of family, the identity of the driver has not been released.

Antioch to host wizardthemed event Antioch’s Wizard Weekend will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 17, and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, June 18, in downtown Antioch. Attendees will celebrate all things magical during the event. People can bring their wands, owls and dress up for this event. There will also be a magic school for kids ages 8 to 13, costume contests, a craft faire, chess tournament and scavenger hunt. The costume contest will be at noon on Sunday, June 18. Pets may also be dressed in costume for a prize. Sign up for the costume contest will be before noon on Sunday, June 18. Pre-registration is required for the school of magic and is $20 per person. The school will be from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 17.

Local residents hunt for exemplary specimens amongst the perennials offered during the Antioch Garden Club’s annual spring plant sale held at the Williams Park Pavilion, 741 Main St., in Antioch, on Saturday, May 20. Gusty early-morning winds, chilly temperatures in the forties, and rain showers kept attendees bundled up in late-winter garb but the weather did little to dampen enthusiasm for Antioch’s eventual springtime. In addition to the fundraising plant sale, the garden club conducts educational programs throughout the year, offers a scholarship, maintains public gardens throughout the village, and holds garden walks during the warm-weather months, amongst many other endeavors. After a successful public art installation of fire hydrants throughout the Village of Fox Lake last summer, the Village has announced 2017’s lighthouse themed “Light the Way” project. In response, the village is looking for artists to submit their designs through May 31, 2017, 12 chosen lighthouses will shine in the streets of downtown Fox Lake from early July through October 2017. “We were so thrilled with our first annual outdoor public art exhibit consisting of unique fire hydrants in downtown Fox Lake, we knew this would become an annual thing,” says Donovan Day, Community Development Director, Village of Fox Lake. “Public art really brings the communi-

ty together and makes our downtown more vibrant. It’s a win/win!” The Village is currently seeking eligible artists to participate in this public art exhibit through May 31 with designs being reviewed by an independent panel of judges on June 1. Selected artists will be announced June 2nd via www.foxlake.org. Walking tours will be available throughout the installation and a celebratory event and auction will be held at the end of the installation (date and details TBA.) Artists will be on hand to discuss their process and vision. Artists will receive 40 percent of money raised from the auction and the additional dollars will help fund the art community in Fox Lake.

Local residents hunt for exemplary specimens amongst the perennials offered during the Antioch Garden Club’s annual spring plant sale held at the Williams Park Pavilion, 741 Main St., in Antioch, on Saturday, May 20. Gusty early-morning winds, chilly temperatures in the forties, and rain showers kept attendees bundled up in late-winter garb but the weather did little to dampen enthusiasm for Antioch’s eventual springtime. In addition to the fundraising plant sale, the garden club conducts educational programs throughout the year, offers a scholarship, maintains public gardens throughout the village, and holds garden walks during the warm-weather months, amongst many other endeavors. Volunteers from throughout Wisconsin collected the photos over the past eight years. Friends and family of those who were killed in Vietnam submitted photos as did students, teachers and others who simply wanted to put a face to the names listed on the wall in D.C. The images they found will help tell the story of the men and women who are listed on the wall as part of a new Education Center the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund is building on the National Mall. Wisconsin was the fifth state in the nation to find a photo for every resident
listed on the wall. The 17-panel exhibit will be on display at The United Church of Christ, 46 Stam St. in Williams Bay on Saturday from 10 a.m. through 3 p.m. In addition to viewing “Wisconsin Remembers”, the United Church of Christ invites guests to tour the church building, view the display highlighting 121 years of ministry and enjoy an ice cream sundae. Lakewood to go Lake to Lake In the last five years, Lakewood School has sought to bring the community together for its annual 5K run, which has changed themes to offer a fresh perspective for participants. This year, the annual 5K run plans to go Lake to Lake,
extending from the school to Lance Park Beach before returning to Lakewood. District Administrator Joe Price, who has attended earlier events, said the 5K run bolsters bonds within the Village of Twin Lakes and beyond. Along with the run, participants can enjoy music delivered by Lake Effect, food and
a raffle drawing. The drawing, according to school coordinator Missy Olson, was made possible through donations from families, staff and area businesses. Cost, which includes a t-shirt, is $25 with proceeds benefitting the community and school reading curriculum.
“It is organized by a group of teachers,” Olson said. “We want to give back to the community, so 50 percent will go back to the community in the form of flowers for our beautiful downtown.” The rest go towards buying new books for the reading department.

While World War I began in 1914, it was not until April 5, 1917 that the United States entered this war, which involved most of the major powers. Until that time, United States President Woodrow
Wilson stayed neutral. The assassination of Austria’s Archduke Franz Ferdinand was the event that is considered to have been the impetus for the start of the war. The countries of the world chose sides with the Central Powers of Germany,

Austria-Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire pitted against the Allies of Great Britain, France, Russia, Italy and Japan. As with most wars, the fight was to gain more territory and establish new territorial boundaries and to take over power. On May 7, 1915 a German U-boat torpedoed the RMS Lusitania, a British registered ocean liner, which made a journey from New York to England. This ship contained more than 1,900 passengers and crew of which over 1,100 perished, 120 of whom were American citizens. As Germany continued to attack ships, concern grew in the United States, but was not until 1917 that the Americans joined in on the side of the Allies.

Stateside support In the United States, there were several efforts to support the war, including The Selective Service Act of 1917. The 1917 act, passed by Congressional leaders, sought to bolster armed services personnel. Aircraft carriers and tanks made their first appearance across the battlefield. Aerial warfare with early biplanes equipped with guns engaged in skyward battles. In 1920, the United States discontinued the draft, but was only temporary. War bonds introduced War bonds were usually associated with World War II but the first of these bonds called Liberty bonds were issued in 1917. The bonds received the name Liberty Bonds to appeal to the patriotism of the Americans who felt they were supporting the war. In truth they were helping to finance the war. By purchasing these bonds, issued in denominations from $50 to $100,000, money was raised without resorting to taxation. The bonds paid an interest rate of 3.5 percent less than what could be obtained at the banks but this interest was
tax free. Americans answered the call by purchasing $18.7 billion worth of bonds. There were 4 Liberty bond issues and 1 Victory bond issue. Starting in December of 1917, the Treasury Department also offered War Savings Certificates and Saving Stamps to enable children and low-income citizens to invest in the war effort. The stamps sold for 25 cents were collected in books until the accumulated amount reached $5.00 when they would be exchanged for a $5 savings certificate. The bonds were advertised in magazines, newspapers and in movies to encourage participation by all Americans.. By the end of World War I, the United States debt was more than 25 billion dollars, due to the additional loans by Americans in the War Bonds.

The Aisne-Marne Cemetery and Memorial is a cemetery located in Belleau, France devoted to American soldiers who lost their lives during the last year of World War I. About 2,280 American soldiers have been laid to rest in this cemetery, with 251 of them buried as unknowns.

Antioch only recorded one known death in World War I, the death of PFC Army Willard J. Mann. World War I was known as both the Great War and the War to end all wars. But as we know it did not end all wars. Within 21 years we were again involved in a World War and we have continued to be involved in military actions since that time. While the truce was declared Nov. 11, 1918, World War I officially ended with the signing of the Treaty of Versailles on June 28, 1919.
