Students stay active

Grass Lake School District in Antioch held its annual plant sale and student activity day on Saturday, when the community collaborated on a variety of projects, including efforts by the National Junior Honor Society. The activity day featured youngsters designing and decorating birdhouses while NJHS students pitched in to plant vegetation at Victory Garden. Victory Garden is part of the school’s summer gardening program. The vegetation, made possible through the donation of Grass Lake graduate Jennifer Patton, offered a wide range of crops to plant. Patton’s crops came from her family-owned farm, Crooked Pine Farm and Garden, located on Route 173 in Antioch. The Plant Sale offered 25 varieties of tomato plants, 13 different pepper breeds, a wide range of herbs and other plants. Additionally, Pots by Sue was on hand to offer painted flower pots for sale. Colette Monahan, a master gardener, offered pointers to students and members of the community on proper planting techniques.

The annual Miss Antioch pageant looks to crown a new winner on Saturday, May 20 in the auditorium of Antioch Community High School, 1133 Main St. With the stage set for the event, which runs from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m., contestants vying for the crown of Miss Antioch, Junior Miss Antioch and Little Miss Antioch are sought. Each of three contests have age requirements, with Miss Antioch reserved for contestants between 16 to 22 years old. For Junior Miss Antioch, eligible contestants range from 11 to 14 years old, and Little Miss Antioch is reserved for contestants between six and eight years old. Winner of Miss Antioch will receive scholarship money towards tuition for the college of her choice. Requirements for being Miss Antioch include have good academic standing, show community involvement and have three references. Specific rules and regulations are included in the application for Jr. Miss Antioch and Little Miss Antioch. Applications can be picked up at the Parks and Recreation Office. The application fee for Miss Antioch is $50 and $30 for Jr. Miss and Little Miss Antioch. For more information, call (847) 395-2160.

Recycling event slated for May 20

McHenry County residents are encouraged to dispose of residential items in a May 20 residential recycling event, according to a McHenry County Department of Health release. The residential recycling event, held from 8 a.m. until noon on May 20, is on the North parking lot of the McHenry County Administration Building, 667 Ware Road, Woodstock. Hosted by the McHenry County Department of Health, residents can dispose of items used within the home, including latex-based paint, latex/water-based stains, oil-based paint and oil based stains in their original containers. Additional items accepted are confidential paper documents for onsite shredding, clothing and household textiles, which include paired shoes, belts, purses and backpacks. Other accepted items include single-use alkaline batteries, Styrofoam packing peanuts, bubble wrap, fluorescent lamps and CFLs. Recycling fees apply to fluorescent lamps and CFLs. “Residents may bring documents with staples, paperclips, small spiral bindings, file folders with small metal pieces, and cellophane envelope windows,” the release stated. “Please remove all binder clips,

Cautious driver is always right By

when drivers encounter a four-way stop and leap into a me-first mentality. Some motorists even piggyback on the car in front of their own, so that both vehicles go through the intersection at the same time. Clearly illegal. So many things could go wrong at a four-way stop. So I am wary. As I am with left turns. I go out of my way to avoid them. Left turns involve cross traffic, which could result in a T-bone that has nothing to do with a juicy steak. Besides, why make a left when three rights will get you the same outcome? Making a left turn at a four-way stop is a double whammy. Enough said. Not all hazards of driving occur on the roadways. Parking lots are the Wild, Wild West of the driving world. Anarchy rules and laws and logic are ignored. Drivers in parking lots pay no heed to stop signs. They cut across traffic and fail to yield to other vehicles. People drive up the down lane, clearly ignoring the

directional arrows painted on the pavement. One must be ever-alert and attentive to avoid running into shopping carts and reckless drivers. I wish I could avoid parking lots like I avoid left turns. My son, who often rides shotgun in my vehicle, gets annoyed with my vigilant behind-the-wheel behaviors. “You’ve got the right of way,” he says with the smug authority of someone with a brand new permit in his wallet and a pocketful of knowledge gleaned from a recent stint in driver’s training class. Clearly his nouveau insight far surpasses my decades of dependably cautious driving experience. “If they come crashing into us it doesn’t matter who has the right of way,” I tell him with the authority of a driver who long ago graduated from training permit to full-fledged license. And then I make a few right turns toward home. It’s all in the name of safety. I’ve never claimed to be a great driver. Good, perhaps. Careful, for sure. My family would tell you I am cautious – sometimes to the point of being jumpy at the wheel. By jumpy I mean on the lookout for surprises, a.k.a. accidents waiting to happen. Pedestrians who come out of nowhere. Squirrels darting across the street. Dogs without leashes. And cars. Mostly other cars. I have trust issues with other cars, or more specifically the drivers of those cars. You can’t count on them to see you or follow the rules of the road. Many are looking at phones. Everyone knows you shouldn’t text and drive but I see it all the time. Hence my caution and predisposition to brake first and ask question later. Defensive driving 101 – I practically invented the topic. This seasoned roadie has learned that not all driving is created equal. Some situations are worse than others. There are a few scenarios where a diligent driver (like me) is likely to be more road-leery and brake-ready than usual. U n c o n t r o l l e d intersections are risky business. When I encounter a cross street with another vehicle inching out onto my roadway, I slow down and prepare to avoid a collision should they attempt to come crashing into me. Four-way stop signs are controlled intersections and as such should bring comfort to a control freak. Unfortunately this isn’t the case. The concept of waiting your turn was mastered by most of us in kindergarten. All that good knowledge goes flying out the window

In addition to the drawings and paintings, students with a musical inclination performed at the Brook Bandshell marking the first concert of the season on a sunny but chilly day. It was the 11th year of the annual Art Crawl which is sponsored by School District 34.

The third-fifth grade Recorder Club from Oakland Elementary, Antioch Elementary, and W.C. Petty Elementary schools entertain residents on a bright but chilly day during their performance at this year’s Art Crawl held at the Brook Bandshell, 900 Skidmore Dr., in Antioch on Saturday, May 6. The band was one of many acts that performed during the event which marked the first concert of the season. It was the 11th year of the annual Art Crawl which is sponsored by School District 34. Along with the music, artwork of area elementary school students was featured in the windows of Antioch merchants along Main St., Lake St. and elsewhere in the village.

As part of the Highway 45 construction project, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation closed the intersection of Highway 45 at the Illinois/Wisconsin state line May 10, a news release reports. The 14-day closure allows the DOT to improve the intersection and install a new traf-

Eight years ago, David Maish made a business move that many successful restaurateurs would not have been so willing to make. At that time, Maish closed his restaurant in Des Plaines, moved his family to Antioch, where he reopened David’s Bistro at 833 Main Street in downtown Antioch. For most, moving after 12 years in the same place is difficult, but not for Maish. “It was an easy decision. A family member was seriously ill and wanted us nearby.” It was a decision that he has not regretted,” he said. The location, along with a diverse menu, is reminiscent of a French bistro. “It is American food with a French flair,” Maish said. Diverse options The menu offers a variety of options, including fine dining appetizers, crab cake calamari and foie gras, to simplified stuffed mushrooms, gorgonzola bites and bruschetta. Salads too offer a variety of choices including grilled asparagus salad, salad Nicoise, and a special filet steak salad. They also serve

flatbreads, or as Maish notes on the menu, “AKA Pizza.” The fine quality entrees that many customers routinely enjoy, he said, include the pork tenderloin with spinach, onions Chevre cheese and tomatoes with whipped potatoes and Atlantic Salmon broiled with maple nut sauce, served over spinach and onion fondue and Cassis (currants) puree and sweet potato chips. Maish touts experience Maish, a trained chef with extensive expertise, supervises the kitchen and works with his cooks to produce high quality foods consistently. Almost everything is made from scratch and so it may take a little extra time to arrive but is worth the extra few minutes. With soup as one of his specialties, Maish and his daughter, Madison, created a whimsical book and soups easily made at home. his own paintings, which adorn the walls of his restaurant. He is a self taught artist who enjoys creating his works and has pursued other hobbies. “I wanted to learn to play the piano,” said David. “So I taught myself about 25 songs. I now play them at the Bistro.” David has also spent time at Second City. “I love to entertain.” Community commitment As a member of the Antioch Chamber of Commerce, David’s Bistro often works with local merchants for the benefit of the Village of Antioch, including the upcoming 125th anniversary of the village. The event has not been disclosed. Noting the PM&L Theatre next door, customers often visit David’s Bistro before they watch a theatrical production. David’s Bistro suggests to customers heading to the theater to inform their server. Maish, who always seeks new ideas, has an ideal venue for a variety of events. Events include anniversary parties, bridal or baby showers, birthdays or business meetings, all of which are held in a private room. “We have even had a

wedding ceremony and reception held here,” he said. “It was a beautiful event.” However, it is not the space for a large wedding as it only holds about 50 comfortably. Party with paint Always looking forward to new ideas, he is considering holding paint parties, which have become so popular over the last several years. For eight years, David’s Bistro has been a favorite spot for lunch and dinner but recently they have discontinued lunch service and limit their service to dinners. By starting early, at 4 pm, it could be viewed as a very late lunch or a really early dinner. “It isn’t only good food that brings back customers,” he said. “it is consistency, good service, and friendliness that brings people back.” For Maish, consistency has been easy, noting his cook has been with him for 18 years and most of the service people have remained for several years. “Customers are always pleased to see servers that they know and who recognize them. Good quality and good service work together to keep customers happy.”

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is encouraging boaters to wear a life jacket and to check their boat registrations before hitting area lakes, according to a news release by the state agency. National Safe Boating Week Boat operators and passengers are reminded to wear a life jacket whenever they’re on the water in Illinois. National Safe Boating Week is May 20-26. Life jackets save lives, and Illinois law requires that life jackets or life vests (personal floatation devices, PFDs) be available for each person aboard a boat or other watercraft. State law also requires that anyone under the age of 13 must wear a life jacket while aboard any watercraft under 26 feet in length at all times the boat is underway, unless they are below deck in an enclosed cabin or operating on private property. Illinois law also requires persons of any age to wear a PFD while operating a per-

The Lauderdale Lakes Improvement Association celebrated its 110th anniversary June 11 at Lutherdale Ministries; and after 110 years, the group still strives to accomplish what it set out to do from the start. “To encourage and assist in the general work of protecting, improving and adorning Lauderdale Lakes and the banks and shores,” LLIA Vice President Debbie Ferrari said. That phrase served as the association’s original mission when it was formed 110 years ago and has stood the test of time. “That, even today, remains as a part of our by-laws as what our objective, goal, mission is as the Lauderdale Lakes Improvement Association,” she said. Ferrari said the LLIA was originally first formed in 1902 and became incorporated 110 years ago in 1906. According to Ferrari, the association was originally formed to address some concerns around the three lakes that make up the Lauderdale Lakes chain. Ferrari said one of the first major items the group tackled was the removal of some stumps that blocked the then narrow channels between the lakes, preventing boats from maneuvering from lake to lake. She said in the early days, the group also focused on dragging weeds from the lake, using teams of horses, and stocking fish. “They wanted to get people together to address that,” she said. “It was groups of people saying we need to come together to address some of the issues and help improve the lake.” Over the years, Ferrari said the association had a profound effect on the lakes, taking on numerous responsibilities such as monitoring water levels, maintaining and repairing the dam, weed harvesting and fish stocking. As the association continued to mature over the years, other organizations were, in a sense, born out of it. Ferrari said in the early 1990s, the Lauderdale Lakes Lake Management District was established by some residents who were active in the association. With the creation of the district, a taxing entity, responsibilities that benefited all residents of the lake – not just members of the LLIA – were shifted over to the district. “Things like the dam, weed harvesting and water patrol, those are all a part of the lakedistrict now,” she said. Ferrari said another organization kind of born out of the LLIA that now not only benefits Lauderdale Lakes,

working within a much larger portion of Walworth County.”

Purpose in today’s world In 2016, Ferrari said one of the LLIA’s most obvious roles is its work with the DNR, organizing, coordinating and financially supporting fish stocking for Lauderdale Lakes. In addition, Ferrari said the association works closely with the DNR to improve the habitat for fish, specifically through constructing and placing cribs in the lake. Ferrari said the cribs are

typically made from trees that have been cut down by members and also from wood gathered when work is done to clean up trees that have fallen naturally on the Petersen Island Woods Preserve. Ferrari said the association also continues to check the water, as it has for many years, including things such as water clarity, oxygen levels, temperature, chemical analysis and more. “Again, that’s working with See LLIA • Page 2

According to Mike Gorka, the “cerebral” sport has enriched Liz’s problem-solving skills, and requires trickery. Liz agreed, saying competitors bring unknown skills, which require several adjustments throughout the match. “You have to be able to plan three steps ahead. You can’t live in the moment with fencing,” Liz Gorka said. “You’ve got to see what they are doing and plan around it, at the same time, not falling to their strategy.” Throughout competition, Liz assesses her opponents movements, works with their strengths and tries to capitalize on weaknesses. “You’ve got to work with their nature, but also trick their nature,” she said. “A lot of people call it physical chess because it is about planning and trickery.” While the sport offers a mental challenge, Liz said fencing provides a physical workout, most notable at the knees and lower back. “It is definitely a workout, you are in a squat for three minutes at a time, moving around,” she said.

Protection required

When a casual observer watches a sport with swords, he or she often believes competitors are left with scars and cuts from weapon strikes, but the danger lies when a sword breaks. “They are steel swords, they break and that is when they become dangerous,” Mike said. “When a foil breaks, it will become a potential sharp point.” However, to counter the danger,

competitors wear protection approved by the sport’s national governing body. “They have what is a called a puncture test, the fabric needs to withstand a certain amount of physical force,” Mike said. While competitors commonly wear knee-high socks and pants known as knickers below the waist, they wear more layers on the upper body, including a plastic protector. “The girls have to wear these plastic chest protectors, boys don’t have to, but it is recommended,” Liz said. “Then we have an under protector, which is like a shortsleeved shirt cut in half.” To protect the face and dominant hand, competitors wear a mask and a glove. Mike estimates costs for an entry level arsenal of protection is around $200. Although the uniform offers a protective barrier, Liz reports a broken sword penetrating through the barrier can “hurt a lot.”

A pioneer

Liz, who is the only known female competing at her level in Wisconsin, has lofty goals in the sport. “I hope to get to college and the Olympics for fencing,” she said. To reach her objective, Gorka spends up to 20 hours per week dedicated to sport, which includes practice, preparation and traveling to Chicago. However, in light of her career achievements, the dedication has paid off. Among her list of accomplishments are two Junior Olympics competitions, one which qualified to compete as a 2018 Team U.S.A. member, and several appearances at the podium both regional and locally. But Liz’s most memorable was last year’s top eight finish. “Getting top eight in nationals has been the highlight of my career so far,” she said.
