Warrant issued in Antioch burglaries

An arrest warrant has been issued for a 25-year-old Antioch man accused in a rash of burglaries in downtown Antioch March 27, according to an Antioch Police Department news release. The Antioch Police Department names Anthony J. Altmayer, who faces six felony charges, as one of two suspects in the five burglaries or destruction of unoccupied businesses. “Through investigation and the evidence gathered there was enough probable cause to secure an arrest warrant for Altmayer,” the release states, adding the other suspect has not been named, pending further investigation. Altmayer, who has an $100,000 arrest warrant, faces five counts of Class 2 Felony Burglary and one count of Class 4 Felony Theft. “Arrangements are being made to place him in custody,” the release states.

A large crowd of area residents pack the latest edition of the Antioch Traveling Closet at the Antioch Senior Center, 817 Holbek Dr., on Sunday, April 2. The event was the fifth in the series of Traveling Closets courtesy of the organizer of the Traveling Closet, Lisa Fisher, and the host volunteers and contributors who work with her to make the affair the growing success it has become. The purpose of the Traveling Closet is to offer to those in need a wide selection of donated clothing, toiletries, cleaning supplies that they can put to good use, all free of charge. Also on hand again were four hairstylists offering free haircuts to all wanting to look their springtime best. Sunday’s event drew almost 250 individuals show up, with 85 percent of them being from the Antioch area. The next Traveling Closet is scheduled for August 20. The event will center around a “back-to-school” theme. She hopes to collect school supplies, as well as school clothing for the area’s budding scholars. Authorities mum on Trevor case Around the same time, Pizza Time in Trevor was broken into and a cash register was taken, several Chicago-area news sources report. Although there is some speculation about whether the cases are related, officials from the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department and Antioch Police have not made any determination.

Looking back on the lives that were helped Sometimes in our rush to do everything we need to do to run a busy charity, to bring assistance to as so many people in the most expedient way possible, we do not take the time to reflect on the lives touched by The Time Is Now to Help. When we receive a thank you letter or phone call we are reminded how our good works have truly changed a life for the better, but once the assistance is successful we move on to the next person in need of our caring and sharing. In this week’s column we thought we would reflect on some of the people helped this year so far. Most of our recipients prefer to remain anonymous and we abide by their wishes. We will share with you the situations that brought about their need for a helping hand. You will see that there are a multitude of reasons for poverty in our communities. Some are typical and some are unusual, but they all share the same suffering, the same pains of poverty. The first assistance provided this year was to a homeless woman living in her broken down van. In the freezing cold of January we received a phone call from a concerned person about a woman living in her van with

In the two weeks following these two clients we helped over twenty people. Our next people helped were a husband and wife, both with age related conditions. The senior woman suffers from a neurologic disorder and she is also the caregiver for her husband whom suffers from dementia. Many seniors over the years have told me how hard it is to live out your golden years in poverty. This husband and wife are an example of the kinds of seniors The Time Is Now to Help assists almost every day. Our fellow creations that worked hard their whole lives, saved for their future, and one illness wipes out everything they saved for. This couple is struggling with two illnesses and after a thorough evaluation of their budget I found their rent to be much too high for them to safely continue paying. The wife had been hesitant to move because of her husband’s inability to handle change well. Their lease was up for renewal and after encouragement from us and our utility assistance they were able to safely move to a much more affordable and accessible rental. Our assistance made it possible for them to have utilities connected at their new rental. The senior woman called to let me know her husband was

getting along fine after a few rough days of extra confusion. She was so grateful to not have the stress of trying to stretch their fixed income to pay their high monthly rent. Now they have enough funds to also afford utilities, food and other daily necessities. Several cars were repaired the following week, along with emergency shelter in motels for several families. A woman wrote us about her physically and psychologically abusive marriage. The torture she endured was quite horrific and only made worse by her exhusbands drug addiction. After several exhausting years of escaping her horrible marriage she was left financially and mentally drained. When we spoke I listened to this woman share years of torture with me. It is always hard to hear what our fellow creations endure; it does not get any easier. I consoled her as she shed many tears, needing someone to talk to. I was moved by this woman’s determination and positive attitude, even after the years of having her hopes and dreams driven out of her she kept these inspiring qualities. Her ex-husband had ruined her first job by showing up and causing a scene. He fought her for custody of the children and even with his violent and

drug related police records and recorded threats she had to prove he was incapable of being a good father. That took every resource she had and once she had her children safe from her ex-husband’s violence she was finally able to have peace of mind living without his continued threats. Thanks to all of “You” this mother and children are now happy and safely away from harm. They also are able to sleep on new beds and live with much needed household necessities provided thanks to your donations. The following week we were able to successfully move our families living in motels into rentals they could safely afford going forward. These families will no longer have to suffer the inconvenience of not having a place to call home. While they are very grateful for the emergency shelter provided on a cold winter night it is not where you want to live for a long time. The lack of a full kitchen and laundry facilities, the lack of privacy for a family with children all sharing one room is not ideal. The gratitude these families have for our assistance that took them from fear and shame to confidence and newfound pride is shared with

Evelyn completed her artwork on APLD’s new “light bright board” which was installed in late March. Located in the Children’s Department of the library, it is comprised of a large black board containing hundreds of holes and multi-colored acrylic cylinders used by young patrons, and some not-so-young, to channel their inner artiste. The cylinders are inserted into holes in the board. They pass through a door exposing super-bright LED backlighting which shines through the cylinder causing a circle of light colored the same as that cylinder. Children are then able to exhibit their creativity by fashioning lighted letters, words, and artwork of their own design. Klabunde, who has a 64-gallon saltwater tank at home, wanted to share his knowledge with the children at his former school. “With the aquatic life, I figured it was a great experience to the kids,” said Klabunde, who reportedly spent two weeks assembling and stocking the tank. “I set up the saltwater tank to help students learn how the underwater life on the ocean floor works,” he said. Among several life forms in the ocean, Klabunde finds corals the most fascinating. Klabunde said his fascination with aquatic life started as a 6-year-old, when his father, Fred, owned a fish tank. “I was about six and my dad had a fish tank and I found it really intriguing and then I had a freshwater tank for a while, and then decided it was time to take my skill level to the next step and do saltwater tanks,” said Klabunde, who hails from Pell Lake. “It’s a bit more challenging,” he said. “You have to keep all of the water parameters equal and then do a lot more maintenance and know what fish are compatible with each other.” At the school-wide assem-

bly, where parents, and students and faculty converged, Paris District Administrator Roger Gahart commended Klabunde on his initiative. “He spent hours and hours setting up the saltwater tank,” Gahart told the audience. Following a presentation on Ocean Life delivered by students in kindergarten and 2nd-grade, students in 3rdthrough 5th-grade offered insight into the history of the Titanic. To bolster relationships between older and younger students, 6th-grade students helped the 1st-grade class deliver a presentation called Kids Helping Kids. From there, the 7th-grade class held an interactive presentation, which had the audience guess the sounds of specific oceans species. Capping off the assembly was the 8th-grade class with a “Story of Rainbow Fish and his Sparking Scales.” As Paris students completed their unit, the school-wide endeavor changes annually to keep the curriculum fresh. “We never repeat a unit in the nine years,” she said. While Paris school expects to explore a different unit next year, Klabunde plans to hone his craft at home, where he maintains a 64-gallon saltwater tank. “I actually have a bigger tank at home that I support and hope to add these guys to it,” he said.

Behind Kimmy Gaul’s wide smile is a person with a wider mission to help children across the globe. The wider mission for Gaul, a 2012 Wilmot Union High School graduate, involves serving as a volunteer at an orphanage in Cambodia. Her volunteer work, coordinated by New Hope for Cambodian Children International School, consists of living and teaching 13 children affected by HIV and AIDS. Gaul started her mission last September, just months after she graduated from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse with a double major in Spanish and pyschology along with a minor in English as a Second Language. Gaul, who responded to an email Tuesday, said her mission is to offer support and love to children. “I share love, through the work and care I put into my classroom, and through play, hugs, and encouragement, and that feels as good as it would in the States with any child,” Gaul states. “Love is

love. Care is care. And children are children regardless of where you encounter them in the world.” New Hope for Cambodian Children International School opened its doors in 2014. Since then, the school has grown to more than 200 students ranging from kindergarten through high school. According to her mother, Doreen Bratt, the 23-year-old Gaul has weathered temperatures near 100 degrees since she arrived last September. “When she first got there, it was 98 degrees, it was tropical,” said Bratt, who communicates with her daughter via email and social media. “It’s very hot and humid there and they have no air conditioning.” However, in spite of the scorching weather, Bratt reports her daughter’s caring and loving demeanor have kept her going. “She is extremely caring and loving and wants to make a difference in the world,” said Bratt. “They don’t have a lot, but they are very grateful for anything they have. That is what struck her.”

It is what your donations allow us to do. Another week went by with our helping a group of senior citizens that lived in a low-income housing project. Most were sleeping on old mattresses or couches. All did not have the money needed to purchase adequate bedding. One of the senior gentlemen was living in constant pain and was in desperate need of dental care. All this assistance was provided thanks to you and a caring person that knew the hardship these seniors were enduring. The same week a single mother was also provided with much needed dental care. If you have ever suffered a toothache you know the pain we relieved was very gratefully received. These are just a few of the many fellow creations we helped through the end of February. Midwives offer comfort and different approach to childbirth By Jason Arndt STAFF WRITER

ollowing the birth of her second of three children assisted by a midwife, Brandy Brey found inspiration from the experience, and decided to turn it into a career. A midwife is professionally trained and certified in supporting women through a healthy pregnancy, offering personalized care, education and counseling in the childbearing cycle, the nonprofit national organization Citizens for Midwifery reports. “I began studying midwifery after my first home birth,” Brey said. “The care I received with my midwife was gentle and personalized.” The personalized care, according to a 2014 Centers for Disease Control report, might have played a role in an upward trend state and nationally. The 2014 report shows a 1.26 percent increase of out-of-hospital births in 2011, with an increase to 1.36 percent the next year. The CDC indicates that since 2004, there has been a steady increase. Furthermore, Wisconsin is one of five states with a higher percentage of out-of-hospital births, between 2 and 3 percent. “Women choose midwives for their personalized, individualized care and support, and because they want to give birth in the comfort of their own surroundings,” Brey said.

Pursuit of a dream Brey, whose children are 13, 10 and 5 years old, said the delivery of her two youngest children created a new vision for her. “She inspired me to pursue my own dream of becoming a midwife,” said Brey, who now has her own practice, Wholesome Birth Service in Salem, Wis. Brey, 37, earned a bachelor’s degree in communication and English from the University of Wisconsin-Parkside before she started her midwife studies. After a seven-hour exam, she received credentials as both certified professional midwife and licensed midwife in 2015, when she started her own business, which serves at least five area counties. The licenses, according to Brey, are through the state Department of Safety and Professional Services. “Certified professional midwives specialize in the safety of out-ofhospital birth,” Brey said. “We provide individualized, patientcentered (care) and focus on patient choice.” “Our training is based on understanding normal pregnancy and birth processes.”

Her cultural awareness comes as no surprise, noting her studies at UW-La Crosse. Before Gaul attended both Wilmot Union followed by UW-La Crosse, she was Wheatland Center School student from kindergarten through eighth-grade. Gaul, scheduled to return to the United States in July, has not ruled out extending her stay.

“I’m not finished learning here yet and am strongly leaning towards staying for one more year of teaching 3rdgrade,” said Gaul. To date, Bratt reports the church has raised about $815. Bratt said school supplies are in high demand. “They are in need of everything…they started the school three years ago,” said Bratt. “Crayons, paper, any kind of school supplies.” Overall, the organization serves about 270 vulnerable children infected with HIV, with some attending education programming and others living with extended families at Camp Lotus. Prior to the creation of the school, the organization helped adults infected with HIV and AIDS, but when they died from the illness, it left their children behind. With springtime in the air, more birds and wildlife are seen along the Chain O’ Lakes and boat owners throughout the region begin to prepare their watercraft for another summer of fun on the water. Northeastern Illinois, which has the largest area of inland water, brings in both residents and visitors to the region. From the Fox River’s entry into Illinois at the Wisconsin border, the waterway stretches through 15 lakes and channels, the area is known as Chain O’ Lakes and attracts more boats than any other inland water area in the United States. Annually, about 28,000 boats register to use this waterway, allowing travel from the Fox River through the Chain of Lakes starting at the Wisconsin border and traveling from the most northern lake, Lake Catherine in Antioch, through the Chain of Lakes down to Pistakee Lake where they can continue into the Fox River. The Fox River is navigable traveling through McHenry, where navigation through the lock is necessary to continue unimpeded to Algonquin. The Fox Waterway Agency was created by the State of Illinois in 1984 “to improve

and maintain the Fox River and Chain O’ Lakes public waterway for recreational use, to restore environmental quality, manage flooding, promote tourism, and enhance the quality of life along the waterway for residents and users alike.” According to Executive Director Joe Keller of the Fox Waterway Agency, the agency is small, but has large role. Primarily, the agency keeps the body of water healthy for future generations to enjoy. For example, the Fox Waterway Agency dredges and recycles recovered topsoil, which starts in Wisconsin, where nutrient-rich soil from farm fields drain into the Fox River and along the Chain O Lakes. Because the soil is rich in nutrients, it encourages the growth of plant life and clogs the lakes and rivers, if not removed. For years, the material dredged from the lakes and river was taken by truck to land often on farms. By acquiring sites on the shore where the dredged material can be unloaded, the material can be loaded to the shore without the use of trucking. “We owned 40 acres of land off the river near Island Lake, but the land was transferred to another agency, because the area did not want to continue

having the dredged materials hauled there, Keller said. “Often land does get transferred between state agencies, but we would like to have it or other appropriate land returned to us, so that we can continue removing the dredged plant life from the River. We would sell that land and purchase another in a more industrial area, away from residential homes.” Legislators Pam Althoff and Barb Wheeler are working to help restore the property to the agency through Senate Bill SB 1258. The Fox Waterway Agency has a variety of jobs in addition to dredging, “With a budget under $2 million, providing services is somewhat difficult. We do not receive any tax money. Our money comes primarily from user fees,” Keller said. The sticker program, required for all users at Chain O’ Lakes, is the primary source of income. Stickers, valid for one year starting March 31, are purchased on the size and horsepower of each watercraft. Stickers are available at the Fox Waterways Office, 45 S. Pistakee Road, Fox Lake or at satellite offices. Also available are temporary use stickers, valid between 1- to 10-consecutive days. Watercraft are also required to have a State of Illinois sticker issued by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. Visit www.DNR.ILLINOIS. GOV for information on registering your watercraft. The Fox Waterways agency works with other government agencies to maintain the Fox River. Agencies include the Lake and McHenry counties Sheriff Departments, U.S. Coast Guard, Illinois Department of Natural Resources, Illinois Environmental Protection Agency,

the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency the Stratton Lock & Dam, Chain O’ Lakes State Park and U.S. Army Corps. Fox Waterways Agency oversees the homeowner buoy program, the waterfowl blind program. And have multiple other responsibilities. The waterway restrictions permit and the waterway clean-up program, are managed by them. Kristine Pearson, who directs projects and permitting, has been an employee of Fox Waterways Agency since 2004. Her passion for area waterways is evident, as she describes several of the Fox Waterway Agency projects, including shoreline preservation and some islands found in the lakes that have slowly eroded. “One of the really successful projects was the Grass Island Wetland Restoration Project,” said Pearson. Using geotextile tubes filled with lake bottom sediment to create a perimeter berm, they form an enclosed area where it is possible to add dredged soil. They are planted with native vegetation and become a permanent part of the island and a refuge for birds. With new regulations imposed annually by the state of Illinois, Fox Waterway Agency suggests checking for current ordinances before the season start. This year, anyone born after 1998 seeking to operate a motor driven vessel, is required to take a boating safety course taught by the US Coast Guard Auxiliary. Located in the Children’s Department of the library, it is comprised of a large black board containing hundreds of holes and multi-colored acrylic cylinders used by young patrons, and some not-so-young, to channel their inner artiste. The cylinders are inserted into holes in the board. They pass through a door exposing super-bright LED backlighting which shines through the cylinder causing a circle of light colored the same as that cylinder. Children are then able to exhibit their creativity by fashioning lighted letters, words and artwork of their own design. Rachel Reinwald, the Youth Services Librarian and School Services Liaison for Lake Villa District Library, has been named Citizen of the Year by Consolidated School District 41. According to Dr. Lynette Zimmer, District 41 Superintendent, the school board recognizes a citizen of the year for the district. “This year our principals nominated Rachel Reinwald for her amazing work,” said Zimmer. “Rachel was unanimously approved for this honor by the full board.” As the School Services Liaison, Reinwald works closely

with classroom teachers to ensure that the library’s materials supplement the district’s curriculum. She regularly visits classrooms giving book talks and working with students on library related projects. One such project is Battle of the Books, a trivia competition using the Rebecca Caudill nominated titles. Richmond woman hospitalized following crash

A 67-year-old Richmond woman was hospitalized following a two-vehicle crash in unincorporated Woodstock on March 28. The crash, according to the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office, happened at the intersection of Route 14 and Hughes Road. A preliminary report indicates a Dodge Caravan, driven by Cathleen Holtz, of Richmond, was heading northbound on Hughes Road and failed to yield the right of way at a stop sign. In turn, a Volvo semi-truck operated by 65-year-old Gerald Grapenthien of Arlington Heights was traveling westbound on Route 14 and crashed into the Caravan. “The intersection of U.S. Route 14 and Hughes Road was closed for several hours while the crash was investigated,” the Sheriff’s Office reports. Holtz, the sole occupant of the Dodge Caravan, and Grapenthien were both transported to the Centegra-McHenry Hospital with serious injuries. However, Holtz was later transported by ambulance to Advocated Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge for further treatment. “Alcohol is not suspected as playing a role in the crash,” the Sheriff’s Office news release states. “No airbags were deployed

Fling to the vendor fair

After nearly a month of studying aquatic life, sparked by a field trip to Chicago’s Shedd Aquarium, Paris School students unveiled their research at a school-wide assembly held March 22. According to Paris School Reading Specialist Margie Blair, the assembly was the concluding presentation from the three-week project, including the Shedd Aquarium. “We started a unit with a trip to the Shedd and they have been submerged into the subject for three weeks,” she said. The field trip, Blair said, was courtesy of the Paris School Organization, who offered assistance, which included the purchase of literature. “We went on three separate days, they also paid for the kids to see a show at the Shedd Aquarium,” she said. “It’s really a nice day for the kids, it kind of kicked off the unit, we also purchased literature for every different age groups.” Meanwhile, as students submerged themselves into several Oceans units, a 16-year-old graduate of the school stepped and lent a hand when he learned students were studying his hobby. Zachary Klabune, now a Westosha Central High School junior, said his contribution served as a way to give back to the Paris community. “Through my nine years here, I loved how friendly the staff was, they are definitely all willing to help and there for you if you need it,” said Klabune, whose brother, Luke, is in the 6th grade at Paris. Klabunde, who has a 64-gallon saltwater tank at home, wanted to share his knowledge with the children at his former school. “With the aquatic life, I figured it was a great experience to the kids,” said Klabunde, who reportedly spent two weeks assembling and stocking the tank. “I set up the saltwater tank to help students learn how the underwater life on the ocean floor works,” he said. Among several life forms in

the ocean, Klabunde finds corals the most fascinating. Klabunde said his fascination with aquatic life started as a 6-year-old, when his father, Fred, owned a fish tank. “I was about six and my dad had a fish tank and I found it really intriguing and then I had a freshwater tank for awhile, and then decided it was time to take my skill level to the next step and do saltwater tanks,” said Klabunde, who hails from Pell Lake. “It’s a bit more challenging,” he said. “You have to keep all of the water parameters equal and then do a lot more maintenance and know what fish are compatible with each other.” At the school-wide assembly, where parents, and students and faculty converged, Paris District Administrator Roger Gahart commended Klabunde on his initiative. “He spent hours and hours setting up the saltwater tank,” Gahart told the audience. Following a presentation on Ocean Life delivered by students in kindergarten and 2ndgrade, students in 3rd- through 5th-grade offered insight into the history of the Titanic. To bolster relationships between older and younger students, 6th-grade students helped the 1st-grade class deliver a presentation called Kids Helping Kids. From there, the 7th-grade class held an interactive presentation, which had the audience guess the sounds of specific oceans species. Capping off the assembly was the 8th-grade class with a “Story of Rainbow Fish and his Sparking Scales.” As Paris students completed their unit, the school-wide endeavor changes annually to keep the curriculum fresh. “We never repeat a unit in the nine years,” she said. While Paris school expects to explore a different unit next year, Klabunde plans to hone his craft at home, where he maintains a 64-gallon saltwater tank. “I actually have a bigger tank at home that I support and hope to add these guys to it,” he said.
