With the beauty of the Chain O’ Lakes area, which contains numerous lakes, a plethora of wild life, and numerous trees, grasses and flowers, it is not surprising that artists find this area the place to be. One such artist is David R. Becker of Long Lake. While people often spend years finding their passion in life, that was not the case for Becker, who has lived in the Chain O Lakes area most of his life and knew at an early age that his interest was art. It is his art, which has made Becker well known in the art world. He works in watercolor, oils, and acrylics, but is mostly recognized for his watercolor scenes of Chicago. Becker has won several awards for his works from watercolor societies around the country. Additionally, he is known for his teaching, offering classes locally, around the country, and in Europe. Heavy artistic agenda For Becker, summer is a busy time and continues through the fall. In June and again in fall, he will be teaching a four-day workshop for artists at Dillman’s Resort in upper Wisconsin. July will find him holding a workshop in Vermont, and in October, he will be leading a five-day workshop at Cheap Joes in Boone, North Carolina. For the truly adventurous, Becker will be holding an art workshop while cruising down the Danube in late September. So what is next in the life of David R. Becker? “Well I would like to find a location for a gallery and studio in this area,” Becker said. He is focusing on his love of painting, and most recently, formed BeckerArtLLC to continue his teaching, and painting work in the world of art. “I just want to get people interested in art,” added Becker. Personal adventures But as we know, nothing in life stays the same. Several years ago, he left his job as an illustrator and began to spend more time working on his paintings. Among his commissions was an artistic piece for a Starbucks coffee shop inside a Chicago Macy’s store. It included the same view that one would see looking out the window of the coffee shop. The picture included the L station on Wabash, which was seen while looking out that window sipping a cup of Starbucks coffee. He does work for
Passion for teaching Many different opportunities for both painting and teaching have made their way into Becker’s life. He met Lucy Tonyan, an artist and owner of The Studio in McHenry, and began to teach watercolor classes to serious art students at the Studio on Saturday mornings. On a lighter note, Becker also teaches fun classes for the less serious student. Both Tonyan and Becker were among the first to offer the Paint Party classes in the area. Held at the Studio, they have become a favorite evening social activity. At these classes, everyone completes an acrylic painting in about 2 1/2 hours under Becker’s direction. Although everyone starts with the same picture, the results are all different based on ability to paint and choice of colors. And Becker, with his strong artistic skills, is patient and understanding to those who struggle.

Career achievements Upon graduation, Becker was hired as an illustrator by J. Walter Thompson. “I mainly produced story boards for television commercials. Story boards are presentations of the advertising ideas to the companies to sell them the commercials. He also was hired upon graduation, by the American Academy of Art as a teacher on a part-time basis and found that he truly enjoyed teaching something he has continued throughout his career. After six years, David moved to Foote, Cone, and Belding, where he continued his work as an illustrator for the next 25 years. “I was a full time illustrator, and a part time artist during those years,” Becker said. In addition he continued teaching, sharing his knowledge of drawing and painting.

Becker’s artistic eye is evident from the unique and beautiful views that he photographs and later paints. His watercolors are sold through a gallery in Chicago. Becker is involved in many professional art organizations and has been a member of the Lake Region Water Color Guild.

Love of art started young When David was in third grade, the family moved from nearby Spring Grove to the Grass Lake area. “From grade school on, I was always interested in art,” Becker said. “I took as many art classes in high school as possible.” It was during a class field trip, coordinated and supervised by his teacher, with two other students who had an interest in art to the American Academy of Art, a private art school in Chicago that intensified his interest. Becker knew immediately that his decision for post high school education had been made. “At the time I attended the Academy it was an associate degree program. It now offers several Bachelor’s Degrees,” Becker said.

Grilling revisited after years of barbecue mishaps
We never mastered the barbecue grill. Oh, we tried, of course – in the early years of our marriage. We charred countless chicken breasts and burned a multitude of steaks. Shrimp on the barbie was never as it was supposed to be. No amount of barbecue sauce could salvage our calamities. It sounded like such a good and easy idea at the store. When we arrived home with our purchase, I couldn’t help but remember
our past with gas. My husband remained enthused. He was ready to take the grill for its maiden voyage that very evening. So we bought some steaks and we did what would have been impossible in our early years of marriage. We Googled, “How to grill steak.” There before us on the screen were countless recipes, blogs, how-tos and articles all about grilling the perfect steak. We took notes and prepared to prepare. Which we did. We even preheated the grill and waited for it to reach the precise temperature. We set a timer. When it comes to grilling, it seems time and temperature are everything
– or at least key to not burning your meat. Which we did not do. The steaks were cooked perfectly and tasted delicious. I can hardly wait to take it on the boat this summer. We may not grill every meal to perfection but we are going in the right direction and I can optimistically say we are no longer wimps on the barbie. Outdoor summer entertainment venue Music by the Lake, presented by George Williams College of Aurora University, recently announced its 17th annual season presenting artist debuts and a range of musical genres and shows, including orchestral music, contemporary and nostalgic pop/ rock, country and jazz. The summer series, which includes weekend events from June 25 through Aug. 13, features shows for all generations to enjoy. “Our vision for this summer season is to bring an exciting mix of quality artists to the Geneva Lake community to engage our loyal patrons and entice newcomers to Music by the Lake,” Vice President for Community Relations Sarah Russe said. This year’s programming offers something for everyone, classic pop/ rock to orchestra concerts to country music to a children’s show. “The children’s show will appeal to children, parents, and grandparents who will remember reading the popular Berenstain books to their own children,” Russe said. Organizers have added a new feature this year with the visits of two authors as part of the series expanded Sundays at 4 offerings. Richard Louv will speak on July 23 and Ray LaHood will speak on Aug. 13. “Aurora University is invested in bringing artists to GWC making the campus a year-round destination for arts and ideas – and the best part is that these (author) programs are free,” Russe said. “Building on our long history and traditions, we continue to provide culturally enriching experiences to the public.” Louv will share his research on the importance of nature. Louv is a journalist and author of nine books, including most recently “Vitamin N: The Essential Guide to a NatureRich Life: 500 Ways to Enrich Your Family’s Health and Happiness” and New York Times best-seller

Single mother of two, struggles after losing daughter to cancer Dear W.C., 18 months ago my whole world came crashing down. I had to quit my job after my youngest child, my daughter, was diagnosed with cancer and became so sick. She was only five-years-old. She was the light of my life and now she is gone for the past three months. She died after many months of surgery and chemo and we even tried some alternative medicine. Even when she was so sick she would always try to smile and tell me she was okay. I was able to stay strong for her until the very end but I seem to have fallen apart since then. I lost my car when I couldn’t keep up with the payments. I haven’t been able to buy good food or clothes for my son in a long time. I have been really struggling to keep up with all my bills but now I am so far behind in my rent and utilities I am on the verge of eviction. I know I need to return to work but I have been struggling with depression. There is no one that seems to understand how hard it is to care for a child that is so sick and then the total devastation you feel when you lose your child. The only thing keeping me going right now is my 9-year-old son. He needs me now more than ever. My children’s father has been nonexistent in their lives and is years behind in his child support. He did not even bother to visit his daughter when she was so sick. I even paid for her funeral by selling my furniture. A nurse at the hospital told me how you helped people in situations like mine. Then I saw the tears start to stream down her face as she said, “I don’t know if I will ever feel normal again. How do I go on without my daughter?” I answered, “You go on for your son. At first you just make the motions for him. Then you will see each day gets just a little easier. It won’t be like before but you will be able to smile and laugh again someday.” The mother shook her head saying, “I don’t think I will ever smile again.” I asked the woman if she wanted to talk about her daughter and she said she could not yet. Again I saw the pain and tears fill her eyes. I did not need to know all the details of what they went through as I have heard this already numerous times from other people we have helped in the past that have suffered this pain. I’ve been told it is a loss you never recover from; you just learn how to live with it. Instead of talking about the circumstances that got her to the place she was financially we focused on putting together a budget and going over her bills. I could see they were living very frugally but there was no way they could continue on without her returning to work. I asked about the children’s father and she looked away in disgust. She told me how he had no relationship with his children and failed to pay his child support on a regular basis since they were infants. The mother told me, “He moved out of state and never felt any sense of responsibility towards his children. He showed up for his daughters funeral and left again immediately afterwards. He just stayed long enough to upset us even further.” I asked where she would like to see her son and herself in a year’s time. She looked surprised when I asked this, as I was sure she was only living in her pain and not even considering the future. I pointed to her son’s room and asked, “What are your hopes and dreams for your son? Do you have any?” At first she seemed almost offended I asked that question but then I think she realized what I was trying to do. I was trying to get her from living just in her own pain and grief and thinking about her future with her son. She finally answered me, “I thought I lost all my hopes and dreams when my daughter died. That’s all I’ve been thinking about. How could I have been so selfish? My son still has his life and we must go on.” I liked the more positive turn in our conversation. We talked about the ways she could start moving on, not forgetting her daughter but just thinking about her beautiful happy spirit
and what she would have wanted for her mother and brother, not dwelling on the last pain filled 18 months of her life. The mother began to cry again saying, “One of the last things my daughter told me was she wanted to see me smile again. I guess it’s not wrong for us to smile again, right?” I assured her, from what she had told me about her daughter, it was exactly what her daughter wanted. The mother looked around the small messy room and said, “I guess I can start right here by making this a home again for my son. Maybe he can have a friend over or go to a friend’s house again without feeling like it would be too much for me. If I clean up in here and maybe clean myself up too, comb my hair and actually put on more than sweats, I might feel more energetic.” I encouraged both ideas and we added a few more ideas to her list of ways to feel better. I included having a volunteer stop by with some food, not just any volunteer but one that had also lost a child and knows what she is going through. I knew this volunteer would be easy to talk to and give her some advice on ways to make her days easier. Once I saw this mother was now motivated to try and help their situation, we went over her bills. Her rent and utilities were behind. Her car had been repossessed so she did not have any transportation. I asked when she would be ready to return to work. The mother said, “I haven’t even thought about it much until today. I see now that I must return to work. We can’t live like this forever. It is time I find another job.” I looked over her resume she had prepared but not sent out. She had good job skills and when she told me about her job in the past she spoke about it with the first semblance of strength I had seen. I asked if she would be able to return to her past employer but she again shook her head no, saying, “I can’t go back there. Everyone knows about my daughter and looks at me with sympathy. I know they can’t help it but it just makes me sadder. When I’m ready I would like to start some place new.” I knew with her skills and the excellent reference she assured me her past employer would provide she should not have any problem finding a job. I told the mother we would be willing to provide a car when she gave me proof of employment. We have so many requests for cars at this time that we are only able to provide them to people that are employed and need that car for their job security. The mother told me she would be sending out her resume and filling out applications as soon as possible. I looked at the mother and said, “You look like a completely dif-
ferent person from the one I met just a few hours ago.” She answered, “I feel like a completely different person. I needed you to come in here and show me I still have something to live for. I know now that just sitting here crying everyday is not going to bring my daughter back. She would not want me to be that kind of Mom to her brother. She loved him as much as I do so I have to make sure he knows I will be there for him now.” When I was through analyzing their financial situation I came up with a plan to get them caught up if the mother could get a job. We together would provide the overdue rent and the present month’s rent to stop the pending eviction. We also would bring their utilities up to date and provide some nutritious food. I handed the mother several gift cards for clothing so she could get a few work appropriate outfits for herself and school clothes for her son. Just as I thought, the volunteer I had sent over became not only a mentor but a friend. She gave the mother needed advice and referred her to her support group for grieving parents that met monthly at her church. Within a few weeks the mother provided me with the information about her new job and we were able to purchase a reliable used car to ensure safe transportation for her and her son. After all we did together to help this mother and son their lives have been renewed. The mother confessed she stills cries every day because she misses her daughter but she does not let it take over her whole day. She is enjoying her new job and how it has given her purpose to get up every morning and dress for the day. She is showing her son how to positively get through your grief and they are now talking openly about his grief as well. One visit, one volunteer and all of us have done this together. Shooting victim in stable condition
Malfunctioning firearm the cause, authorities said By Jason Arndt EDITOR
An accidental shooting at the Conservation Club of Kenosha County in Bristol left a 64-year-old Kenosha man in serious, but stable condition, according to a Bristol Fire Department official. The shooting, which happened on the trap shooting range, occurred when a 72-year-old Illinois man was attempting to clear a malfunction in his 20 gauge shotgun, and in turn, struck the 64-year-old man about 20 feet away. Public Information Officer Chris Medlock of the Bristol Fire Department said the accident happened before 11 a.m., which sparked a response from his department to the property in the 21300 block of 85th Street. “The victim suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen and was in stable condition while being transferred to Flight for Life,” states Medlock, adding the patient was airlifted to Froedtert Hospital in Wauwatosa. As the Bristol Fire Department came to the aid of the victim, Kenosha County authorities investigated the shooting, which revealed that an Elk Grove Village man was shooting a 20 gauge shotgun. “(He) had tried to clear that malfunction and the firearm discharged,” the Sheriff’s Department states. “That shot then struck the victim.” While the man is listed in stable condition, the Sheriff’s Department reported the man had serious injuries, which needed treatment at Froedtert. The Sheriff’s Department has referred charges of Causing Injury by Negligent Handling of a Firearm on the man who allegedly shot the victim to the District Attorney’s Office. According to online court records, the man has not been formally charged in Kenosha County Circuit Court.

Motorcyclist dies after crash Authorities seeking information in Randall fatality
A 41-year-old Kenosha County man is dead after he was ejected from his motorcycle in a Sunday evening crash in the Town of Randall, the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department reports in a new release. According to a preliminary investigation, the man re-
portedly traveled northbound on Highway P, where he lost control of his motorcycle at a curve. When authorities arrived in the 11700 block of Highway P shortly after 4:30 p.m., they discovered the motorcycle had overturned several times, and the man lying on the road-
way. “The operator and sole occupant of the motorcycle was pronounced dead at the scene by the Kenosha County Medical Examiner’s Office,” the release states. The man’s identity is being withheld pending family notification.
As they work to notify the family, the Sheriff’s Department is seeking more information, the release said. “The investigation is continuing. If anyone witnessed this crash of has information, they can contact the Sheriff’s Department at (262) 6055100.”
Waukegan man killed in Randall pedestrian crash A 38-year-old Waukegan man reportedly struck by a vehicle in the 34000 block of 110th Street in the Town of Randall Tuesday died from his injuries, the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department states.
According to a Sheriff’s Department news release, the man identified as Brian Engelhart, of Waukegan, was found lying at the edge of the roadway when authorities arrived at about 1:30 a.m. “The male subject had in-
juries consistent with being struck by a vehicle,” the release states. “He was transported to a hospital where he died from his injuries.” Meanwhile, a 29-year-old Twin Lakes woman, who identified herself as Engel-
hart’s girlfriend, was still at the scene, and later arrested on charges related to the crash. The crash is still under investigation by Detectives from the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department.

With the beauty of the Chain O’ Lakes area, which contains numerous lakes, a plethora of wild life, and numerous trees, grasses and flowers, it is not surprising that artists find this area the place to be. One such artist is David R. Becker of Long Lake. While people often spend years finding their passion in life, that was not the case for Becker, who has lived in the Chain O Lakes area most of his life and knew at an early age that his interest was art. It is his art, which has made Becker well known in the art world. He works in watercolor, oils, and acrylics, but is mostly recognized for his watercolor scenes of Chicago. Becker has won several awards for his works from watercolor societies around the country. Additionally, he is known for his teaching, offering classes locally, around the country, and in Europe. Spring Grove seeks grand marshal for parade With the Fourth of July approaching, the Village of Spring Grove is seeking Grand Marshal nominations for its Independence Day Parade. According to a village newsletter, the Fourth of July Committee is accepting nominations until April 25, when they start the voting process. “Can you think of someone who is a standout citizen of our community?” the newsletter asks. “Please nominate them with an explanation of why you think they should be this year’s Marshall.” To nominate an outstanding citizen, email the explanation to sg4thofjuly@ gmail.com . Additionally, the committee composed of volunteers is seeking new members to join their team. “If you would like to be part of this great team, they would love to have you,” the
newsletter states. According to the group’s website, annually, more volunteers have signed up to contribute to the day’s festivities. Volunteer contributions include July 3 set up, parking help, parade lineup assistance, ticket sales, children’s game, clean up following the parade, advertising and donations. Also, the committee states the annual parade would not be possible without the help of the community, including the Richmond-Burton National Society, Police Explorers program, Richmond-Burton Community High School football team. “The Spring Grove 4th of July Celebration is constantly changing to meet the needs of our community,” the website states. “Do you have an idea that would make the event better? Explore the Midwest through woodblock printmaking
Alfred Stark’s woodblock printmaking exhibit will be open during business hours until Tuesday, May 23, at Lost Valley Visitor Center, Route 31 and Harts Road, Ringwood. Stark creates the prints using Japanese Woodblock Printmaking. The method consists of using a press to rub the back of paper, which has been placed over an inked wood block. He uses vegetable-based and water-based inks to create the prints. Prints on display have been created by using Japanese Woodblock Printmaking and Western printmaking techniques. All pieces are hand carved with traditional Japanese and German carving tools. There will also be an artist reception from 1 to 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 2.
