Lake County Sheriff’s Office initiates veteran ambassador program To better address first-response to veteran homelessness and veterans in-need and in-crisis, Sheriff Mark Curran partnered with the Lake County Veteran’s Assistance Commission, the Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center, PADS Lake County, Midwest Veteran’s Closet and Medal of Honor Recipient Allen J. Lynch to ensure nobody is left behind. Earlier in 2017, Sheriff Curran invited newly appointed Lake County Veteran’s Assistance Commission Director Andrew Tangen to the Sheriff’s Office for an introduction and meeting. The leaders of both organizations had much in common to include law degrees; and as leaders of mission-focused, service-organizations – they discussed new ideas to address issues, which impact Lake County. One of the challenges for the Lake County Veteran’s Assistance Commission is providing crisis services after their normal-operating hours. While Lake County is fortunate to have the Veterans Affairs as a resource, many veterans and some first-responders don’t know how to access services for those in need, after hours. To better ensure crisis services are available to those in need, a plan was created for Lake County Sheriff’s Office employees. Select employees received awareness training
on the issues of veteran homelessness and veterans “in crisis;” as well as transport, shelter and referral options for immediate assistance. Training was provided by Veterans Affairs staff, Director Andrew Tangen and Mr. Joel Williams from PADS Lake County. A majority of those who received the initial training served in the military. They returned to their respective Sheriff’s Office Divisions to train remaining Sheriff’s Office personnel. Thus, Sheriff Curran’s deputies and other employees will become Veteran Ambassadors for the commission and Veterans Affairs. Included in the plan is a ‘Police Referral Card’, which includes emergency contact numbers for the Veteran Affairs along with other resources. A shelter plan was also implemented. Director Andrew Tangen remarked, “As Lake County Sheriff’s personnel are deployed throughout the County 24/7, they are ideal for engaging in conversation, assessment and transport.” “Sheriff’s personnel with a yellow ribbon and blue shield affixed to their squad have the training and confidence to positively impact this issue and help those in need,” Sheriff Mark Curran said. Sheriff’s Office recognizes staff for exemplary work efforts Sheriff Bill Prim presented Life Saving and commendatory awards during a ceremony Oct. 25 to eight employees recognizing their exemplary performance of duties while serving the citizens of McHenry County. Deputy Keith Sosnowski received Letter of Recognition for locating two suspects who had burglarized a local business. Corrections Officers Van Rogers and Tim Jeeninga were both presented with Letters of Commendation for locating a small firearm during a pat-down search of a new arrest during the intake process. Telecommunicator Kyle Kuzen was also presented with a Letter of Commendation for locating a stolen vehicle while off-duty on his way home from work. Deputy Stan Myk was presented with a Letter of Commendation for his supererogatory actions that lead to the arrest of a driver
involved in a hit and run accident.
Lifesavers Life Saving Awards were given to Deputies Jerry Croner, Justin McKenzie and Trent Raupp. Deputies McKenzie and Raupp, in two separate incidents, gave a lifesaving dose of naloxone hydrochloride (trade name Narcan) to residents who had overdosed on opioids. Deputy Croner responded to a call where the subject was passed out in a car parked inside of a closed garage. He forced entry and was able to save that person’s life. “All of these awards demonstrate the kind of dedicated, alert and service-centered staff we have in the Sheriff’s Office,” he said. “I am fortunate to be able to lead individuals of this caliber and the citizens of McHenry County are fortunate to have them on their side day in and day out.”

As a condition of his bond, Morris could not use drugs, or incur future criminal activity.

Brian E. Morris, accused of delivering heroin to a man who later died in Twin Lakes, had his Oct. 19 final pre-trial hearing cancelled because of a schedule conflict in Kenosha County Circuit Court. With the cancelation, however, Morris could come to a plea, according to online court records. The plea hearing comes less than two weeks after his co-defendant, 29-yearold Ashley McGraw, pleaded guilty to lesser charge of first-degree recklessly endangering safety. As a condition of McGraw’s plea, according to her Kenosha-based attorney Terry Rose, she has to testify against Morris. Morris, 34, meanwhile, still faces charges of first-degree reckless homicide related to the April 29 death of Cody Lawrence, 24, who was found dead of a heroin overdose inside an apartment unit at Hilltop Motel in Twin Lakes. Morris, who made his initial appearance on May 4, has been in jail on a $15,000 cash bond. On May 10, he waived his right to preliminary hearing, where probable cause was found a felony was committed, and then pleaded not guilty. According to a criminal

One of the purchases allegedly happened on April 28, when McGraw allegedly transported Morris to a drug dealer known as “Dee” in Illinois, and returned to the Hilltop Motel. The complaint identifies “Dee” as Daniel D. Williams, 35, of Waukegan. Lawrence, the complaint states, then went to McGraw’s apartment to ask about heroin availability, but was directed to Morris later that night. On April 30, when McGraw again drove Morris to Illinois, he allegedly told her Lawrence was dead and that he took his cell phone “so that no evidence could be found on the phone” and later discarded it in the trash at a McDonald’s. Morris, who later denied taking Lawrence’s phone, eventually admitted to supplying heroin to Lawrence the night before his death. The complaint contends Morris, who also faces a misdemeanor bail jumping charge in Racine County, told authorities he “disposed of it so that he didn’t get blamed for anything due to ‘activity

Registration for the upcoming youth basketball season has been set for Nov. 12 and Nov. 19 from 10 a.m. until noon at Richmond Grade School, 5815 Broadway St., Richmond. Boys and girls in 2nd through 8th-grade have an opportunity to learn basic basketball skills, work as a team, and compete in a recreational basketball league. Thanks to the nose of Dax, a K9 officer with the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, a burglary suspect was arrested in Round Lake on Oct. 22. The Lake County Sheriff’s Office said the K9 and his handler, deputy John Forelanza, were called in to help Round Lake Police find a suspect who allegedly took a motorcycle from a garage. “The homeowner confronted the offender and the offender produced a knife, and fled on foot,� a Facebook post states. “Deputy Forlenza and Dax tracked the offender and found him hiding behind a fence in a nearby backyard.� Although the suspect initially refused arrest, jumping over a fence, Forlenza and Dax eventually found him several houses away where they took him into custody.

Two men arrested for selling crack
After a two-month investigation, sparked by complaints of drug activity in the area, McHenry County authorities arrested two Woodstock men on charges of unlawful delivery of a controlled substance on Oct. 26. The McHenry County Sheriff’s Department states in a release that Timothy C. Horn, 25, and Maurice C. Timberlake, 18, became the subject of an investigation when area residents were concerned. Through the investigation,
led by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Police Narcotics Task Force, detectives allegedly made several undercover drug buys from both Woodstock men. “At the conclusion of the investigation Detectives seized eight grams of crack cocaine with an estimated street value of $1,200,� the release states. The Task Force, according to the release, includes officers from Lake in the Hills and City of McHenry police departments.
Horn faces the following charges: two counts unlawful delivery of controlled substance within 1,000-feet of a school (class X), unlawful delivery of controlled substance within 1,000-feet of a school (class 1), unlawful delivery of controlled substance (class 1), unlawful delivery of controlled substance (class 2) and three counts unlawful possession of controlled substance (class 4). For Timberlake, he was charged with the following: unlawful delivery of
controlled substance within 1,000-feet of a school (class X), unlawful delivery of a controlled substance within 1,000-feet of a school (class 1), two counts of unlawful possession of a controlled substance (class 4). Timberlake also received two counts of unlawful delivery of a controlled substance (class 1, class 3). While Horn posted a $300,000 bond, Timberlake remains held in McHenry County Jail on $500,000 bond.
The McHenry County Department of Health will hold a one-day “Pumpkins 2 Compost� collection for residents during the Green Living Expo at McHenry County College on Saturday, Nov. 4 from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. McHenry County College is located at 8900 Highway 14 in Crystal Lake. There is no charge for this composting event, where residents may drop off, pitch, toss or bowl their organic Halloween decorations (pumpkins, cornstalks, gourds and mums). Organic Halloween decorations from residential sources may be dropped off and must
be free of candles, glow sticks, lights and artificial fasteners. No other types of recyclable materials or waste will be collected at this station. According to the most recent Illinois Commodity Waste Generation and Characterization Study Update, organics represent nearly 28 percent of all material that is landfilled in the state of Illinois. The event will divert compostable material from disposal in landfills, helping to preserve landfill capacity. All of the compostable material collected will be transported to an EPA permitted organics composting facility.

Thanks to the nose of Dax, a K9 officer with the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, a burglary suspect was arrested in Round Lake on Oct. 22. The Lake County Sheriff’s Office said the K9 and his handler, deputy John Forelanza, were called in to help Round Lake Police find a suspect who allegedly took a motorcycle from a garage. “The homeowner confronted the offender and the offender produced a knife, and fled on foot,� a Facebook post states. “Deputy Forlenza and Dax tracked the offender and found him hiding behind a fence in a nearby backyard.� Although the suspect initially refused arrest, jumping over a fence, Forlenza and Dax eventually found him several houses away where they took him into custody.

Pumpkins to Compost event slated The McHenry County Department of Health will hold a one-day “Pumpkins 2 Compost� collection for residents during the Green Living Expo at McHenry County College on Saturday, Nov. 4 from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. McHenry County College is located at 8900 Highway 14 in Crystal Lake. There is no charge for this composting event, where residents may drop off, pitch, toss or bowl their organic Halloween decorations (pumpkins, cornstalks, gourds and
mums). Organic Halloween decorations from residential sources may be dropped off and must be free of candles, glow sticks, lights and artificial fasteners. No other types of recyclable materials or waste will be collected at this station. According to the most recent Illinois Commodity Waste Generation and Characterization Study Update, organics represent nearly 28 percent of all material that is landfilled in the state of Illinois. The event will divert
compostable material from disposal in landfills, helping to preserve landfill capacity. All of the compostable material collected will be transported to an EPA permitted organics composting facility. This organics composting opportunity is made possible by McHenry County College, Prairieland Disposal and McHenry County Department of Health. Twin Lakes’ newest police officer started his first day Wednesday, when K9 Rex started patrolling the village with officer Joe Patla, who expressed gratitude to the community for their continuous support. “I can not thank the community enough,” he said. Through community donations, including one to finance
a used squad car from Spring Grove, Ill., the village was able to receive Rex. With Rex’s nose, the police department hopes to reduce illegal drugs coming into the community, which has experienced a rise in heroin overdoses and other drug activity. Rex, however, could help officers in community outreach efforts. “In the future, we want to get him into the schools,” said Police Chief Adam Grosz.

Pumpkins bring reminders of holiday season CORRESPONDENT
It is the fall season and pumpkins can be found everywhere. These usually bright orange members of the vine crop family, known as cucurbits, are a staple of all the fall holidays starting with Halloween in October followed by Thanksgiving and finishing with Christmas. The pumpkin plays an important part in our holiday celebrations and traditions. Pumpkins originated in Central America and worked their way up to North America and arrived before the Pilgrims. They were a favorite food of Native Americans who also used them for purposes other than eating. They would cut them into flattened strips and dried them in the sun, then weaved them into mats. They also roasted pumpkin over their campfires and ate the cooked chunks. Native Americans also used pumpkin seeds for food and for medicinal purposes. Pumpkins received their name, according to the University of Illinois Extension program, from the Greek word ‘pepon’, which means a large melon. Later, pepon was changed to pompon by the French.
Then, pompon was changed by Americans into the present day pumpkin. Early recognition of pumpkins were referred to in The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, written by Washington Irving in 1620 and in Cinderella and written in French by Charles Perrault in 1697. Pumpkins are classified as a fruit, although many of us consider them a vegetable. Illinois, the University of Illinois Extension reports, is one of the four top producers of pumpkin. Other states known for high pumpkin production are Ohio, Pennsylvania, and California. The pumpkin crop reaches maturity in October just in time for our fall celebrations. While we often think of pumpkins at this time of year as carved Jack- o-Lanterns, only a small percentage of the total pumpkin crop is for ornamental use. In addition to pumpkins carved for Halloween and used for decorative purposes, both indoors and outdoors, 90 to 95 percent of pumpkins grown are processed and typically canned for pies, soups and bread.
