Antioch Chamber of Commerce to host Halloweenthemed carnival
The Antioch Chamber of Commerce will host its “Halloween Fest” carnival from Thursday, Oct. 26, until Sunday, Oct. 29, in the large north parking lot behind the shops on the east side of Main Street, Skidmore Drive, Antioch. This large Carnival offers rides for every age. Enjoy the crisp fall weather, spooky music, flying ghosts and more. A wide variety of ticket options are available to offer savings for multiple visits. There will also be contests and prizes. The costume contest will be at 8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 27, at the Antioch Bandshell. Each contest will be broken up into age groups ages one to five, ages six to 10, ages 11 to 15 and ages 16 and older. Contest categories are originality, scary, funny and character. Winners of each group will receive a Megaband Wristband good for the rest of the carnival after the contest.

Robert J. Gould, 51, of Nova Scotia, Canada, was behind bars in the McHenry County Adult Correctional Facility Thursday charged with Predatory Criminal Sexual Assault stemming from incidents in April 2017 in Island Lake and unincorporated Woodstock, a McHenry County Sheriff’s Office news release states. The case began when Canadian authorities contacted the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office with information concerning possible criminal activity which had taken place in Illinois. Sheriff’s Office investigators then worked with the Halifax Regional Police in Nova Scotia to conduct a criminal investigation. Investigators made contact with Gould in August 2017, when he was visiting the Wheeling, IL, area. Warrants for Gould’s arrest were subsequently obtained for Predatory Criminal Sexual Assault of a Child; Criminal Sexual Assault; and Aggravated Criminal Sexual Abuse. The location and apprehension of Gould was turned over the Sheriff’s Office Apprehension Unit, which
is part of the United States Marshal’s Service Great Lakes Fugitive Task Force. Investigators learned that Robert Gould had been detained by Canadian authorities on Sept. 1 and was being extradited to the United States. On Sept. 19, Gould Robert J. was taken Gould into custody at Logan International Airport in Boston, Massachusetts by the United States Marshal’s Service and Massachusetts State Police. He was subsequently transported to the McHenry County Corrections Facility, where he arrived Wednesday. Overall, Gould is charged with four counts of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child, six counts of predatory criminal sexual of a victim under 13, seven counts of criminal sexual assault victim under 18 and three counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse. He is held on $500,000 bond.

app at my fingertips. But retailers are attempting to influence us in a new way (or at least new for me). They want us to purchase our groceries online. There are even incentives – free shipping or discounts, for instance. The largest retailers are in competition for our grocery dollars. Whoever wins us over first gets the prize – ka-ching! It’s an interesting concept: shopping for groceries without ever entering a store. I’m not sure how I feel about it. There are some things I simply prefer to pick out myself. Bananas. Steak. Bread. Ice cream. A cart. But there are a slew of other products I buy over and over – week in, week out – that I’d be glad to have someone deliver to my door. So one Sunday afternoon, on a whim, I decided to try it. Why go to the store when you can have the store come to you? During the process I discovered a few fun, useful and interesting facts I thought I’d share. First, you should know your prices. Many items were the same price online as in
the store, but some were not. Those cheap packs of noodles we all ate in college cost about 20 cents at the store, but nearly a dollar online. Chicken noodle soup, however, is the same both places. Despite the advertisements claiming you can choose from millions of items, not everything is available online for home delivery. You can purchase toilet paper, but not my preferred brand and type (I’m fussy that way). Some things still require a trip to aisle 12. Shipping is free if you order a certain amount. When my cart didn’t total enough to get the free shipping I threw in a pack of paper towels (because my toilet paper wasn’t available). I ordered a variety of random items: the aforementioned paper towels, shampoo, cat treats, potato chips, coffee, vitamins, sports drinks and assorted canned goods including soup, crab meat, tomato sauce and those spicy diced tomatoes. The store guaranteed delivery in two days and came through on its promise.
Delivery itself was surprising. I was expecting one box – perhaps two. I got seven or maybe even more; I quit counting. All my items arrived unscathed and undamaged. Even the potato chips, which were wrapped on four sides cocoon-style in a sort of fitted cardboard box and then placed in a larger box. Cans of tomato sauce were placed end-to-end and wrapped in bubble wrap. Most boxes contained at least one (or more) inflated plastic packing pillows to cushion items. Products packaged together were not what I would have logically expected. The coffee arrived first – a day early – in a box with the vitamins and a string of plastic pillows. The rest of the order came the next day. One box contained most of the canned goods, along with the potato chips, which were remarkably uncrushed. The sports drinks came with the cat treats. The shampoo came with one can of crabmeat. Perhaps most surprising were the spicy tomatoes. I’d ordered four cans, what with
it being football season – which is just another name for spicy tomato and cheese dip season. The cans arrived together, but not in the same box. Each one came in its own box, with a cushioned plastic packing pillow and nothing else. One 12-ounce can per box. The packaging and delivery had to cost more than the profit margin on the tomatoes, but I’m no grocery (or tomato) expert. This was an experiment of sorts. I’d probably do it again – with certain items, especially heavy or bulky ones (with apologies to delivery persons). But I’m not sure the concept itself will last – unless they figure out a way to pack items in a more streamlined manner. Until then I’d advise doing one thing: invest in packing pillows. Returning to its luster Genesee Theatre has deep roots By Sandra Landen Machaj CORRESPONDENT
The 1920s were a glamorous time, when entertainment included trips to theaters built to showcase live vaudeville acts, and the burgeoning movie business of the day. In Lake County, one such theatre was located in Waukegan. Waukegan, which was a growing community on Chicago’s north shore, already had three other theaters, but due to the rapid growth and close proximity to Chicago, organizers said it was justified. Three businessmen, A.L. Brumond, H.C. Burnett, and D.T. Webb, came together with the idea of buying land to build a community center. The three focused on the idea of providing not only high quality entertainment, but also commercial space and apartments for residents. They found what they deemed would be an ideal location in downtown Waukegan on the corner of Genesee and Clayton streets. This property, formerly the YMCA, was purchased from them for $130,000 and would take an additional investment of $1 million before the theater was opened to the public. A Chicago architect, known for his theater design work, Edward P. Steinberg was chosen to design the new theater. Previously, Steinberg
worked on the design of State Theatre and the BelPark Theatre in Chicago. When construction started in Sept. 1927, there was no expense spared to create the eventual theater in Waukegan, where retail and residential space was planned. The theater itself was designed to take up the middle of the building, with business space and apartments on the sides, along with apartments on the second through fourth floors. Quality materials were used through the project. The outside facade of the building was constructed from Terra Cotta and pressed bricks in an ornate design. The theater’s main entrance was located on Genesee Street. The theater opened into a large lobby with a huge crystal chandelier in the center. The interior of the theater was built in a Spanish Renaissance style, using a light yellow limestone, with antique plaster decorations. The special feature was the large dome, which covered the center of the ceiling and was created from hammered silver. Several tons of Carrera marble from Italian quarries were used throughout the theater. Along with marble, there were 1,200 yards of tapestry on the walls. The finest in lighting added to the lavish look of the theatre. They added the latest tech-
nology to accommodate popular live entertainment of that era, such as vaudeville, music, in addition to film presentations. A Barton Grande pipe organ at a cost of $25,000 was added to the theater, which also received the latest and most advanced heating and cooling systems to improve comfort of theater patrons. By Dec. 25, 1927, the theater was ready to open, and started with four sold out shows, one of which was “The Valley of the Giants.” In the following years, the theater was a popular place for movies and live entertainment. By 1952, the theater had a need for renovations, which included installation of new seats and a sound system. There were some minor changes in decor. After several years as a popular place to go for movies and live entertainment, the Genesee Theater started to lose its luster. Movies were discontinued due to the rise of the major CinePlex movie theaters and in 1989, the Genesee Theatre officially closed, and the building was put up for sale. The City of Waukegan, which did not want to lose the theater, bought the building in 1999 when no other bidders were found. Then, the city invested about $23 million to renovate
the once glamorous building, and received the help of more than 120 volunteers to allow the theater to reopen on Dec. 3, 2004. The 1950 marquee was removed and replaced with one reproduced from photographs of the original 1920 marquee and a lobby was added on the Genesee Street side of the building. The box office was removed and moved into the lobby, where it allowed more entry doors to the lobby. On the second through fourth floor, where the apartment were, crews removed and replaced them with more lounges for the theater. The interior of the main auditorium was extended from both the front and the back and the projection booth was repositioned. These changes allowed an increase in seating capacity from 1,799 to 2,416. The lighting was enhanced with the installation of antique chandeliers and other lights from the time the theatre was built with several found across the country, and brought to the Genesee to be installed. Others were replicated from photos. Restoration of the plaster moldings brought the theater back to its original look. The original carpeting was seen in a 1927 photo and was also duplicated to finish the restoration. Another change was the

doubling of the size of the stage and the installation of the latest 21st century technology to allow larger production on stage. Jack Benny, who was a Waukegan native, was said to have appeared at the Genesee Theatre and was instrumental in helping to save the theatre. In recent times, Rapper Soulja Boy shot part of his
music video during a performance here. Morrissey also shot part of his music video “I’m Throwing My Arms Around Paris” during a performance here in 2007. Today the Genesee continues to produce live theatre shows bringing a variety of cover bands, musical artists and other productions.

On a cold, clear night in a town that’s so far north it’s almost in Canada, the residents of Almost, Maine find themselves falling in and out of love as the Northern Lights flicker. “Almost, Maine” is made up of nine short plays that explore discovery and loss in a mythical small town It has become one of the most frequently produced plays in the past decade because audiences fall in (and hopefully not out of) love with Cariani’s quirky characters, brought to life by an ensemble of PM&L actors. “Almost, Maine” will run at 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and at 2:30 p.m. on Sundays. Lindenhurst Parks District to host ponythemed tea party
The “My Little Pony Tea Party” will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 5, at Lippert Community Center, 2200 E Grass Lake Road, Lindenhurst. The time is now to help
Barnabas matching grant to help more poverty stricken This has been a week of blessings for The Time Is Now to Help and the people in our communities we provide poverty relief. The Richard H. Driehaus $30,000 matching grant has been met and while we wait for Richards matching grant funds we are busy using your donations to provide desperately needed assistance. A woman and her teenage daughter were evicted when her husband suffered a massive stroke that left her unable to pay their rent. She has fallen even further behind because of paying for his extended care at a facility and her own serious health problems. We helped her to get into affordable housing and referred her to other areas of assistance. We provided food, first month’s rent and security deposit. A senior citizen that needed car repairs contacted us. There was no way she could afford these expensive repairs on her own. She is raising her grandchildren and works full-time so her car is very necessary for their survival. Thanks to your donations we were able to pay for her car

repairs enabling her to keep her job and provide for her grandchildren. Another senior citizen that was living in a motel was finally moved into an affordable apartment. After a month of living with a mini frig and microwave she was overjoyed to have her own kitchen and bed again. Thanks to all of you we were able to help this kind woman with rent, a bed, household necessities and gas for her car. All things she would never have had without our caring and sharing together. A young woman that has a severe disability was provided food and also pet food for her service dog. She wrote to us telling us how she was getting pet food from the food pantry but it was not a food her dog could tolerate and he became ill. For some dogs it can be very hard to change diets all the time. She then
had to feed her dog the rice and ground beef she had gotten for herself at the food pantry to ease his stomach upset. Thanks to all of you we were able to step in and provide both she and her service dog food that would give them both a balanced diet. We also provided desperately needed toiletries and help with her utilities. These are just a few of the approximately 55 people that have been helped so far thanks to all of you and the Richard H. Driehaus $30,000 matching grant motivation. When we have finished distributing the Richard H. Driehaus $30,000 matching grant we will share with you where every dollar was spent for poverty relief for our fellow creations. All of us coming together, along with Richard Driehaus, have made an incredible impact in removing the pains of poverty. Through the good works of all of us we have gone behind the closed doors of poverty and provided the care, love and compassion so many people in our communities need. To continue our good works we are so happy to announce we have also
been blessed this week with another matching grant opportunity to begin immediately, the Barnabas $67,000 matching grant. You may remember Barnabas as they have been providing matching grants for the past years. They not only want to provide a matching grant, they also want to encourage The Time Is Now to Help and all of us to continue our mission of bringing help, compassion and love to those most in need. I was surprised last week when I received a phone call from our dear friends known as Barnabas. From time to time they frequent our office to give us what we call recharging or power hugs. The warmth and love we feel from these friends helps us get through many a tough day. This time our friends also known as Barnabas told us about providing another matching grant. We can’t think of a more fitting name for these friends than Barnabas and the name of their upcoming matching grant, Barnabas $67,000 matching grant. Barnabas is known in the bible as a man who provided help, encouragement,
comfort, and wisdom. God used Barnabas to help others accomplish their ministry. Barnabas was a man of compassion and encouragement, and that is exactly what our friends want this matching grant to represent. We feel encouragement, comfort and compassion from our friends and these traits will be shared with everyone that turns to us for assistance. As we go through the stacks of letters and emails that share with us the plight of many people in our communities we feel the heavy weight of responsibility to help these people. We know we do not have to shoulder this responsibility alone. We have all of you there every step of the way and we can’t thank you enough for that. Your heartfelt support in matching these grants is what makes our shared compassion a success. Please continue to donate knowing every dollar you give will be matched by the Barnabas $67,000 matching grant, doubling your donation, removing twice as much pain, sorrow and fear of poverty. As we continue to work very hard verifying the genuine need
