Two arrested after disturbance Drugs and gun seized

In the top Antioch Township race, Steve Smouse was re-elected township supervisor, winning by the slim margin of 62 votes over his closest opponent, Tom Shaughnessy. The Lake County Election Board said registered voter turnout in the election was 15.8 percent.

Two men accused of gun and drug charges related to a disturbance in Antioch remain in Lake County Jail after both made their first appearance in Lake County Bond Court Thursday. The disturbance reportedly happened shortly before 4 a.m. April 5, when the Antioch Police Department responded to an apartment complex in the 400 block of Filweber Court, a news release states. When police arrived, they found 31-yearold Derrick Copeland, of Mundelein, in the Derrick parking lot, and in turn, questioned him. Copeland “During this interaction Copeland was found to be in possession of multiple individual packages of cannabis, which resulted in his arrest,” the release states. As authorities arrested Copeland, Antioch police discovered 27-year-old Richard Davis, of Antioch, hiding between a vehicle and fence. When officers investigated Davis, they allegedly discovered a loaded .40 caliber semi-automatic handgun, multiple individual packages of suspected cocaine and marijuana, the release states. Richard “Officers later determined the handgun Davis was reported as stolen,” the release states. Davis, who received a $250,000 bond, faces three felonies, unlawful possession of a controlled substance with the intent to deliver, unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon and armed violence. If convicted of all charges, Davis faces a maximum of 50 years in prison. Meanwhile, for Copeland, he received a $75,000 bond and faces a felony charge of unlawful possession of cannabis with the intent to deliver, which carries a maximum prison sentence of up to three years. Both are due back in Lake County Court April 26.

St. Patrick’s Day police campaign results

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office joined other state and local law enforcement agencies across Illinois to reduce highway fatalities by cracking down on unbuckled motorists and impaired drivers during the St. Patrick’s Day holiday. Obregon gets life Crime spree in fall of 2015 leads to long-term sentence

The last page in the Andrew Obregon saga finally turned inside the Kenosha County Courthouse April 3. Obregon, 34, of Bristol received a life sentence without an opportunity to return to the streets, including the communities of Western Kenosha and Racine counties, where he eluded authorities for 22 days in 2015 before his arrest in Lake County, Ill. In January, Obregon pleaded guilty to six of his 28 felony charges as part of an agreement with Kenosha County prosecutors. Obregon was convicted of first-degree intentional homicide with a dangerous weapon in Tywon Anderson’s death, which occurred in September of 2015, when authorities discovered his remains in a Town of Paris cornfield. Additionally, Obregon pleaded guilty to first-degree attempted intentional homicide with a dangerous weapon stemming from an Oct. 13 incident where he beat a Brighton woman at her home in a last attempt to avoid prosecution. Along with those charges, Obregon also pleaded guilty to one count of felony armed robbery and three counts of fleeing/ eluding an officer. Kenosha County District Attorney Michael Graveley believes Obregon’s sentencing brings closure to residents in both counties. “It took away their peace of mind,” Graveley said. “I am just relieved that we were able to get what I consider justice in this case. To me, this was a once in a generation crime spree and the sentence reflected the impact it had in Western Kenosha County.” Originally, if convicted of all charges, Obregon faced life in prison plus 435 years for allegedly stealing multiple vehicles, robbing two convenience stores and leading authorities on high-speed chases. According to the criminal complaint filed in Kenosha County Circuit Court, Obregon was also accused of driving into cornfields in an attempt to elude authorities. Sentencing apprehension Although Obregon took a plea bargain in January, he was reportedly apprehensive in Circuit Court Judge Chad Kerkman’s courtroom Tuesday, when his public defenders requested adjournment to give the 34-year-old to reconsider the agreement. However, Kerkman rejected the request, Graveley said. “We began the sentencing hearing today with the defense attorney Carl Johnson indicating that Obregon requested adjournment,” Graveley said. “That adjournment indicated he wanted to file a

motion (to reconsider).” But, with about three months since the Jan. 28 plea bargain, Obregon had time to reconsider and file a motion. “He did not file a motion, it wasn’t timely,” Graveley said. “It has been almost three months to consider that if they wanted to withdraw that plea.” Stunning plea agreement A day after Obregon appeared for a jury status hearing on Jan. 26, when court officials received instructions leading up to the trial the following week, the 34-yearold reportedly approached Graveley about a plea agreement. “Literally, the last business day before the trial, the defense approached me and said he was willing to plea to the most serious charges in this case,” Graveley said. The willingness, according to Sheriff David Beth, was stunning. “This was a complete shock to us, we didn’t know this was going to happen,” Beth said at a Jan. 27 news conference. Entering the trial, the Kenosha County District Attorneys Office compiled a list of more than 100 witnesses to testify, with the trial expected to last at least a few weeks, Beth stated. “It would cost tens of thousands of dollars to try this,” Beth said at the Jan. 27 news conference. The apprehension On Oct. 13, 2015, a Brighton woman arrived at her home to find Obregon, who eventually beat her and stole her vehicle equipped with OnStar, a satellite communications service. After she called for help, Kenosha County authorities responded and located Obregon heading southbound on Highway 45, where a high-speed pursuit that stretched into to Lake County, Ill., began. When Obregon crossed the state line, Lake County authorities took over the pursuit as he headed east towards Zion, where police had requested OnStar to disable the vehicle. From there, Obregon fled on foot for about a mile until a Zion Police dog took him down during a struggle that left him with a gunshot wound to the right shoulder. Restitution request While Obregon received a life sentence, he also was ordered to pay restitution in Tuesday’s hearing, Graveley said. “There are some costs associated with our victims that the state crime victim compensation board covered,” he said. “The state crime victim compensation board is asking for more than $2,000 for money paid out to the victims.” Also, Obregon is required to repay expenses of at least $240 for his extradition to Wisconsin from Illinois.

My husband says I am a squirrel. Don’t take it the wrong way. It’s a term of endearment as well as a fairly accurate descriptor (if I am being honest). It’s become a nickname of sorts. It all started at the superstore. About a month ago we stopped to shop for a few things. We entered through the automatic doors and headed toward the first item on our list. But en route, up ahead, on the right, was a display of gloves – on clearance. I instinctively veered right to check them out because my husband could use a pair. Before I got to the gloves, however, I was confronted with a roadblock. Two long lost friends (but strangers to me) had apparently rediscovered each other in front of the magazine rack and were in the middle of a long and drawn-out conversation in middle of the aisle. They were oblivious that their bodies and carts were obstructing any forward progress of other impatient patrons who wished to actually shop during their shopping time. I took a quick left turn to avoid the reunion crew and upon doing so noted a sign advertising 30 percent off a fancy name brand of socks. I darted left to access the socks and realized my husband was no longer behind me.

(He always walks behind me in the store. He says it is because I am a squirrel.) I abandoned the socks and gloves and retraced my steps – dodging the longlost friends a second time. I found my husband right where I’d left him – at the entrance to the store. This was an easy find. Sometimes I get so far ahead that I lose him completely. (Or better put, he loses me.) When that happens, I call him on his cell. Aisle two calling aisle four. I’ve had to do this more than once (or twice). He has a hard time keeping up with my lefts, rights, darts and dashes up one aisle and down the other – in the haphazard, unpredictable fashion akin to a squirrel. Hence the nickname. Sometimes I hear him comment when I suddenly veer left or shift right. From a step or two behind me he’ll respond with a single word, “Squirrel!” We’ve gotten a few good chuckles out of that one. I don’t mind being compared to a squirrel. I’ve always liked the little fuzzy

rodents. They’re cute. And I fully I realize shopping with me is like tracking a squirrel that is flitting from tree to grass to porch, digging and burying nuts. I’ve always associated my squirrel behavior with the grocery, department and superstore. This weekend, I realized I’m much more squirrelly than I thought. On Saturday morning, I decided to light a candle to enhance the kitchen ambience. As I looked for the matches, I noticed a lone sock on the floor. It needed to go to the laundry pile. On my way to the laundry, I found two cans of soda – both half empty. They needed to go to the recycling bin. On the way there I found a couple of tennis balls. As I flitted from one room to the next de-cluttering various untidy items, I noticed the window over the sink was splotched and in need of a cleaning. We were out of paper towels (to clean the window) so I went to put that on the ever-growing grocery list. I couldn’t find the list, but did come upon a couple of bills that needed paying. I went online to make the payments, but got caught up with email instead… It’s then I realized why my husband calls me a squirrel. He’s got good reason. I never did get around to lighting the candle.

Grant doubles to help poverty stricken The Fox Charities New Year Wish $25,000 matching grant, and your generosity have brought utility assistance to 10 people. Natural gas, electric and water utilities were paid to remove the fear of disconnection in April. A senior couple that has many medical conditions was given assistance with their overdue electric bill. A widowed senior woman that is seasonally employed could not keep up with her high electric bill. A single mother that was severely injured in a car accident and has a daughter with special needs was spared a certain utility disconnection come spring. Two working poor families with children were given utility assistance, one with propane for her heat and another with their high electric bill. Together we have given them the utility assistance they needed to get through the remaining cold months without the fear of disconnection. A single mother that had become homeless with her two children was taken in by one of her friends, but also endangered her friend’s lease because of the amount of people living in the small apartment they were sharing. Our assistance helped this single mother to move into her own apartment, sparing them both from eviction and homelessness. An older working couple that was struggling to pay their rent was given the advice and assistance they needed to successfully manage their budget going forward. Two women that were escaping the horrors of an abusive relationship were provided with first month’s rent and security deposit to get them and their children out of harm’s way and living in a safe, secure apartment. All of these fellow creations had tears of relief over the assistance we provided them, removing their desperate fear of lack of shelter during these brutal winter months. You and Fox Charities have prevented the pains of poverty and impending homelessness for twenty people since the beginning of the year thanks to the Fox Charities New Year Wish $25,000 matching grant. Fox Charities knows the key to employment, health care and even food and toiletries, is reliable transportation. Car repairs continue to be the most requested assistance, even surpassing rent and utility requests. Four cars were purchased for working single mothers that risked losing their jobs and the ability to get their children to necessary medical appointments if they did not have dependable transportation. Three cars were repaired to ensure safe transportation. Car payments were paid for two working poor families. All these people, along with many others, were provided gas gift cards to ensure they had enough gas for their trips to work, hospitals, therapies and other necessary places we need to travel. Thanks to the Fox Charities New Year Wish $25,000 matching grant and all of you we assisted many that struggled with maintaining reliable transportation. Many budgets were spared the constant drain of endless car repairs on cars that would never provide these fellow creations with the safe transportation they now have thanks to all of you and Fox Charities. God bless you for removing the stress and worry over safe, reliable transportation. Handicap assistance – $775.28 A woman recently disabled and newly wheelchair bound could not access her home. Her husband had to lift her out of her chair and carry her up the stairs. We together provided a handicap ramp to allow her to access her home easily and safely. Thank you and Fox Charities for easing their struggle to access their home without wheelchair accessibility. Toiletries – $1,116.22 Soap, shampoo, diapers, feminine hygiene, tooth paste, tooth brushes, combs, toilet paper and many other items were purchased for senior citizens, the disabled, veterans, children, single mothers and working poor families. Everyone’s first concern is to pay for shelter,

food, transportation and utilities. Many times toiletries just do not fit in the budget. Toiletries are necessary for job success, dental health and personal hygiene. The Fox Charities New Year Wish $25,000 matching grant and all of you have provided the items needed to maintain health, pride and physical wellbeing. Household necessities – $1,222.78 Thanks to the Fox Charities New Year Wish $25,000 matching grant, and your generosity, we provided household necessities for many. These items include: blankets, sheets, towels, cleaning supplies, pots and pans, dishes, etc. For the homeless we sheltered that have often lost all they own, these items are most appreciated. For those that struggle with budget restraints, and often go without these daily necessities, these items were gratefully received. Beds – $1,882 A low income housing complex that houses many of our senior citizens and the handicapped came to us for help with their need for beds. Four senior women that were sleeping on couches and old sagging mattresses were provided a good restful sleep thanks to all of you and Fox Charities. We have removed the pains these senior women felt every day after trying to sleep on these worn old beds and couches. Thank you for your generosity. Appliances – $631.95 We provided a refrigerator for a single mother that is caring for her two children with disabilities. They have been through so much already; they did not need to be living without refrigeration for their food. Thanks to your generosity they do not have to. God bless you and Fox Charities. Home repair – $1,250 A new furnace was provided for the single mother that had obtained many injuries in a car accident. She and her children had been living without sufficient heat as their budget was already stretched because of many large medical bills preventing them from being able to afford a new furnace. Thanks

His legacy lives on Six years after his death, man’s genuineness continues to shine by Heather Ruenz STAFF WRITER

ix years ago, Nick Van Dyke was killed while working on a vehicle at Lockhart’s Service in Lauderdale Lakes. He was 28 years old and loved being an auto mechanic, his mom, Mary, said. “He started as a clerk there when he was in his teens and worked his way up. Even as a young kid, he would draw semis with flatbeds and would figure out the amount of weight it could carry based on the number of wheels the truck had,” she said. Mary, a social worker, was doing training in Milwaukee the day of the accident when she received a call from her husband, Chuck. “Chuck is usually easy going so I knew it was bad. They were going to Flight-for-Life Nick to Froedtert Hospital but couldn’t stabilize him enough for the flight,” she said. Immediately following Nick’s death, on June 29, 2011, Mary said their family was surrounded by an overwhelming amount of support and began to realize the number of people Nick touched … a sentiment

they still hear today. “I don’t think I really appreciated the community we live in until Nick was killed. You don’t expect grief to connect people but it does. The people in this community have been wonderful,” she said.

The shuffle takes off Mary said the goal of Nick – who along with Mike and Marty Healy, co-owners of Lauderdale Landing at that time, started the Shamrock Shuffle – was to host a fun event, bring people together and celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. “I’m Irish and the Healys are Irish – and Nick loved running – so it was a way to bring people together and promote the Landing in the process,” she said. The family found out on an even deeper level the impact Nick’s life had on others at the second Shamrock Shuffle, which had been changed to include Nick’s name. “The best part of the Shuffle is the stories that come up about Nick’s time bartending at Lauderdale Landing,” Mary said. “We heard so many stories at that first Shuffle following Nick’s death… about him helping others

and going out of his way because it was the right thing to do.” “That second Shuffle, it was gray and drizzly in the morning. But right before the race started, the sun came out, it was warm and there was a double rainbow. It was amazing and so many people took pictures of it and commented that Nick was there with us,” Mary said.

Still helping others The Nick Van Dyke Memorial Scholarship had been created for graduating high school seniors going into the automotive field and is still going strong today. But the event

had grown enough that by the third Shuffle, which features three walk/run courses ranging from 2 to 5 miles, the Healys had started Share The Love, which chooses a different beneficiary each year. “It’s helped many people, including a local teacher who was battling cancer, a 1-year-old who was suffering from cancer and it paid the plane fare for someone so they could spend their final days with a family member. It’s done a lot of good,” Mary said. The beneficiaries of this year’s Shuffle, which was held March 18, in addition to two scholarships, are: Lane Schweitzer – a teenager who suffered a traumatic brain injury last fall, and; Jack Pack – a nonprofit that provides cuddle cots, a cooling device that allows families who have experienced the loss of a newborn more time with their stillborn baby. Between his love of running, playing in pool and basketball leagues and refereeing community leagues for kids, Nick interacted with countless people, Mary said, though it was his time spent at The Landing that let his personality shine – and provided Nick an opportunity to brag about the most important people in his life. “Nick was shy. Working at Lauderdale Landing did wonders for his self-confidence and he met so many people there. Everyone tells us they couldn’t have a conversation with Nick for more than five minutes without him pulling out photos of his nieces and nephews,” Mary said. Three were born in the year before Nick died so they’ve learned of him through memories shared, but the loss has been harder on the older kids, who were between the ages of 8 and 10 when he died, Mary said. A grief counselor who met with the older nieces and nephews helped them make memory boxes, which was helpful, according to Mary. Mary said her family has grown much closer to the Lockhart family since Nick’s death. Dennis and Wendy Lockhart, the owners of the service station Nick had worked at since he was 16 years old, have donated generously to the Nick Van Dyke Shamrock Shuffle and to the Nine + Nine for Nick golf outing the family sponsored, which benefitted The Treehouse, Walworth County’s Child Advocacy Center, for five years following

Nick’s death, she said. “The Lockharts watched Nick grow from a shy teenager into a confident, outgoing, considerate and loving man, so his death devastated them. The grief of losing him has definitely brought our two families together so that on days like the most recent Shuffle, they feel like members of our extended family instead of Nick’s former employer,” Mary said.

He loved his family “My daughter, Brooke, was newly pregnant when Nick died. She hadn’t even told anyone yet. Her baby was born on Feb. 14 the following year and they named her Nicklyn, after her uncle. She looks like him and it was a special gift for our family,” Mary said. Mary said over the years since Nick died, her older grandchildren have told their parents about conversations they’ve had with their uncle. They also wear various shirts and hats that belonged to him. “He’s not here physically but he’s in our hearts and minds every day and we still meet people who knew him, whose lives he touched,” she said. Chuck and Mary had six children – three boys, Dan, Scott and Nick, and three girls, Kyle, Erin and Brooke, and now have 12 grandchildren, six boys and six girls. “What we’re most proud of as parents is that all six of our children were friends as adults. People used to say, ‘If one Van Dyke shows up, all six of them do.’ Nick had a way of bringing people together throughout his life. He was the ‘centerpiece’ of our family and had a special and unique relationship with each one of his siblings as well as with his father and myself,” Mary said. “He had the same effect on everyone he met and has continued that legacy even though he’s no longer here physically. You take for granted as your children get older and you see what good people they are, that they’ll always be around. That doesn’t always happen but so many people have the Nick wisdom and the Nick-isms, that he’ll always be remembered,” she said. No injuries reported in train crash Collision with semi-truck caused road closures

When a Canadian National Railway train crashed into a semi-tractor trailer stuck on the railroad tracks, the collision snarled traffic for nearly four hours in Trevor last week, but authorities reported no injuries. Preliminary reports indicate the semi-unit equipped with a low profile trailer attempted to maneuver through a railroad crossing near the intersection of 104th Street and 268th Court, a Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department news release states. “The semi unit was hauling a piece of construction equipment on a low profile trailer,”

a Sheriff’s Department news release reports. “The trailer became lodged on the grade crossing.” Meanwhile, a Canadian National Railway train heading southbound struck the trailer of the semi-truck, the Sheriff’s Department wrote. The crash resulted in extended closure of the railroad crossing at Highway AH, or Camp Lake Road, south of Highway SA while authorities and Canadian National Railway personnel investigated. Village of Salem Lakes Fire Chief Mike Slover, whose department cleared the scene shortly after 3:30 p.m., said personnel from railway as-

sessed the scene until around 7 p.m. “The railway explained to me that they have engineers, and that there are requirements for them to inspect the engineers, the cars and rails before they get moving,” said Slover. While Canadian Railway personnel inspected their equipment, residents of the Sunset Oaks subdivision had to exit on 106th Street and 264th Avenue, with other entrances and exits closed. Slover, who commended railroad personnel for their efforts, said the closure resulted in stalled traffic. “I definitely appreciate what they were doing to make

sure everything was safe, but unfortunately, it created minor delays for folks traveling around Salem because of the incident,” said Slover. Despite minor traffic delays, residents were not in any danger from potential hazards, including fuel spills. “There was no derailment of any kind with any car, there was no significant damage to the tracks,” said Slover. “There was no fuel leakage or spills, so we are very fortunate for that.” The semi-truck, however, was towed away from the scene and another vehicle picked up the trailer, Slover reports.

A display of a variety of commemorative whiskey decanters, produced by the Regal China Company for Jim Beam Distilleries. This case contains decanters commemorating golf, baseball, football, and horse racing events. They are on display at the Lakes Region Historical Society.

Cookie Jar Book, he notes that the company was founded around late 1920s by Herman Kravitz in Chicago and moved to Antioch in 1938. Other sources, however, state the company was founded by Kravitz in Antioch in 1938. Until the late 1940s, when it was bought by the Royal China and Novelty Company, the company operated as a separate entity. According to Illinois Secretary of State records, there is some connection between both companies, with the same people serving as officers of both firms. Regal China was known for producing high quality items, such as commemorative plates, cookie jars, salt and pepper shakers and Jim Beam commemorative decanters. Their china was described as non-porous exhibiting the beautiful, rich colored glazes. Their quality glaze was so well done that even now few minor cracks in the glaze can be found in their products. In 1953, the Regal China Company plant, located at 336 North Ave., was ravaged by fire. According to local reports, chemicals used in the production of their pottery caused an explosion and started a fire. Noting the quantity of combustible materials in the plant, the fire spread quickly, and needed help from 14 neighboring fire departments to contain the blaze. The plant was de-

stroyed and damaged was estimated at $600,000. Regal China rebuilt, however, and continued to offer quality pieces, which became collectibles. Among the early novelty premiums made were pitchers for the Ovaltine Company, cookie jars for the Quaker Oats Company, and Ships for Old Spice Cologne. Cookie jars produced by Regal China were one of the favorite collectibles in the 1940s and 1950s. While some were produced entirely by Regal, other cookie jars were made by other manufacturers, and sent to Regal for their expert glazing. Since many companies used the same molds, sometimes it is difficult to identify the originals from clones. According to EBay, very few of Regal’s Cookie jars had the name inscribed on the bottom or fired into the glaze pattern. Thus even experts often have difficulty identifying original Regal cookie jars. The Old MacDonald’s Farm and the Little Red Riding Hood series are two of the most well known and highly prized collectible jar series that the Regal Company produced. In 1955, Regal Company started to produce decanters for Jim Beam liquor, which came in different sizes and styles. Some were decorative birds or other animals. Caricatures of the Democratic Party symbol, the donkey, and the Republican Party symbol, the

elephant, were among the decanters produced. Kentucky Derby decanters were a favorite of horse racing fans who collected various “Run for the Roses” commemorative decanters. There are a series of decanters depicting the Federal Duck hunting permit stamps collected by stamp collectors and duck hunters. The collectible cookie jars and decanters were bought and sold over secondary markets to collectors, which some commanded prices above the original cost. While many sold and continue to do so in the hundreds of dollars, a few commanded even higher prices. The problem is being certain that the piece is truly a Regal China Company product.

Having the provenance for the piece which proves its authenticity is important to receive full value upon selling. Jim Beam Distilleries bought Regal China Company in 1968, but continued to manufacture its liquor bottles and decanters from Antioch until 1992, when Jim Beam Distilleries shut down the plant as collection of commemorative whiskey decanters declined sharply. That year, on August 26, a public auction was held of all the assets of the Regal China Company. From glazes, to machines spraying the glazes, in addition to equipment used in the production were offered for sale and ended 62 years in Antioch.
