Antioch Senior Center a longtime village gem Volunteers needed

Nestled in the middle of the Village of Antioch, settled behind the Police Department and Station 1, close to the Methodist and Catholic churches and within walking distance to four senior apartments, grocery stores and the downtown, lies the Antioch Senior Center. The building was built more than 42 years ago in a partnership between the Village of Antioch and the State of Illinois Area Agency on Aging. The building’s use, however, is not limited to seniors. Other non-profit community groups, which serves all ages, hold events in the evenings and weekends for free. The Center offers many benefits for seniors, including transportation services, public benefits counseling, employment assistance, volunteer and civic engagement opportunities and multi-generational programs. It bustles with daily activity Monday through Friday. On the last Monday in February, more than 50 people filled the activity room to singalong with Cecelia Hojen on the organ and Dorothy Longly on the piano. Paul Hoard still serves as Senior Center director. On Mondays and Wednesdays, seniors are treated to hot lunch, which is prepared by Piggly Wiggly staff across the street and senior center volunteers pick up the food. Clerk’s office offers ways to avoid lines on Election Day

For voters who might not have time to cast their ballots on Election Day, Lake County Clerk Carla N. Wyckoff said in a statement there are other options to consider, according to a news release. Election Day is March 20 with polling sites open from 6 a.m. until 7 p.m. The options, Wyckoff said, include early and absentee voting. For absentee voting, which is done by mail, voters need to complete a ballot request form for each election and can visit the Lake County Clerk website at www.LakeCountyClerk. info, where they can complete an E-request form. Otherwise, according to the release, voters can download and print the form, fill it out and send the complete form to the County Clerk. Voters can also request a ballot request by email to VotingByMail@lakecountyil.gov or call 847-377-2406. “The official ballot is not permitted to be sent electronically, but is delivered via U.S. Postal Service,” the release states. “The Clerk’s office must receive all requests by noon on Thursday, March 15.” Once voters receive their ballot by mail, completed bal-

lots must be postmarked no later than midnight on Election Day, the release states. Voters can check the status of their ballot online by accessing the clerk’s website, where there is a “Track My Order” feature. Additionally, early voting continues through Saturday, March 17 at all 15 early voting sites, four of which will be open on Sunday and Monday, March 18 and 19. “Voters can use any conveniently located early voting site regardless of where they live in Lake County,” the release states. “Choose a site that’s close to home, work, or along the way.” On Election Day, however, voters must cast their ballots at their assigned neighborhood polling location. For those Lake County residents who still need to register or update a current record, Grace Registration is available at any early and at voter’s assigned Election Day voting site. Applicants are required to meet all age, citizenship, and residency requirements; present valid identification; and vote at the time of registration. Easter Egg Hunt slated for March 24 Event being held at Richmond-Burton High

Presented by the Village of Spring Grove Recreation, with cooperation from the Village of Richmond and townships of Richmond and Burton, the annual Easter Egg Hunt returns to the Richmond-Burton High School gymnasium March 24. While there is no charge for the egg hunt, organizers suggest donating a non-perishable food item, which will support the local food pantry. The annual event, which starts at 2 p.m., features more than 2,500 eggs with two special eggs per age group. “The hunt starts promptly at 2 p.m., so don’t be late,” a Village of Spring Grove bulletin states. For children who find a special egg, they redeem it for a basket filled with toys and candy. Along with the special eggs, there are “many more

eggs that can be redeemed for prizes,” an event flier states. All children must be accompanies by an adult during the event and to ensure safety, children will be grouped by age, 0-2, 3-4, 5-6 and 7-10. To guarantee there are enough eggs for everyone, children are limited to 10 eggs each, the flier states. There will be no preregistration for the event. Hunting for eggs, however, is not the only feature at the event, which will receive a visit from the Easter Bunny. “Grab your best basket and camera and come meet the Bunny at the annual Easter Egg Hunt!” the flier states. Richmond-Burton High School is located at 8311 Route 31 in Richmond. The school is just south of Highway 12.

The Illinois Attorney General Public Access Bureau Chief Steve Silverman closed his investigation into a complaint that the Antioch Township Board inappropriately entered into a closed session on November 16. An inquiry regarding open and closed meetings by the Hi-Liter sparked the investigation. At that meeting, trustee Steve Turner announced that the board would go into a closed session to discuss the statutes and rules related to filling a vacancy on the board. The vacancy in the supervisor position was created when Steve Smouse died late

last year, shortly after being re-elected. In his response to the complaint, Silverman said the statutes permits a public body to go into closed session to discuss, “The selection of a person to fill a public office, as defined in this Act, including a vacancy in a public office, when the public body is given power to appoint under law or ordinance, or the discipline, performance or removal of the occupant of a public office, when the public body is given power to remove the occupant under law or ordinance.” Discussion of the procedure is not permitted in closed session. Silverman’s remedy, “This office requests that the

Streetlight program discussed Antioch Township supervisor Tom Shaughnessy said the township pays the bills for outside lights in about 15 subdivisions. “They in turn, pay us, but we receive about 50 percent of what we have paid out,” he said. “I have been looking for those contracts and haven’t found them yet. They ought to be renegotiated. That hasn’t been done for a long time.” He said there was one subdivision that was interested in handling their own bill. Grant mentioned that the lights were a public safety issue. Shaughnessy said if anyone knows the whereabouts of the contracts, he would appreciate some help in locating them.

In a span of five days last week, the Kenosha County Medical Examiner’s Office recorded four suspected overdose deaths, which caused the county to issue warnings about opioid and opiate use. Medical Examiner Patrice Hall, who confirmed two of the four suspected overdoses happened west of Interstate 94, did not state what municipalities were involved. “Two of the suspected deaths were west of Interstate 94, and two were east of Interstate 94,” Hall said. Hall, meanwhile, said in a news release the recent cases show the county still has an ongoing struggle with drug use. In two years, the county saw an increase in confirmed overdose deaths, jumping from 54 in 2016 to 57 last year. Three suspected cases from 2017 are still under investigation. Hall said the increase is cause for alarm, considering the size of Kenosha County compared to its southern neighbor, Lake County, Ill. “Overdose deaths have been a concern for a long time, but this recent number of them in a short amount of time is particularly alarming for a community of our size,” Hall states in the news release. “Lake County, Illinois, is four times as large as Kenosha County but had just 24 more toxicity deaths than we did in 2017.” Earlier this year, Kenosha County ranked first among all 72 counties in overdose deaths in 2017, according to a state Department of Health Services study. While there has been an increase in overdoses, there has been a deadlier drug combination, notably fentanyl. Fentanyl, according to the Centers for Disease Control, is an opioid 50 to 100 times stronger than morphine. In Kenosha County, fen-

tanyl was involved in 22 overdose death in 2017, an increase from 2016 when there were six confirmed deaths. Through two months in 2018, the medal examiner said there have been three confirmed deaths related to fentanyl, and there could be more, with 21 suspected cases under review. Public access project set to begin at Ethel’s Woods Forest Preserve

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office would rather respond to a false alarm than miss the opportunity to intervene prior to a tragic situation. Lake County residents are one step closer to being able to experience the Ethel’s Woods Forest Preserve. At their Feb. 13, meeting, the Lake County Forest Preserve Board of Commissioners awarded a $824,522 contract to Campanella and Sons, of Wadsworth, to build trails and parking at the preserve, starting in the spring of 2018. Planned public access improvements to the 500acre preserve will include an entrance drive from Miller Road, a 25-car parking lot, toilets, a 0.7mile gravel loop trail and three scenic overlooks. A 0.7-mile section of the Millennium Trail will run along the western edge of the preserve. Weather permitting, these improvements are expected to be completed and open to the public in early summer 2019. Located in Antioch Township, Ethel’s Woods currently does not have public access as it undergoes a major multi-year land restoration effort, which includes restructuring an earthen dam to slowly drain a man-made lake as well as ecological restoration of the historic North Mill Creek stream channel. Funding assistance for this restoration work was provided by a $1 million Clean Water Act grant from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency. “We are particularly excited to begin construction of this trail and public access project because the preserve is named in honor of Ethel Untermyer, the woman whose grassroots efforts helped create the Lake County Forest Preserve District in 1958,” said Forest Preserve President Ann Maine. “I think Ethel would be pleased to see us continue to realize her vision of protecting large natural spaces and making them accessible to the people of Lake County.”

Assault suspect receives six years behind bars By Jason Arndt EDITOR

Brady T. Schoonover, convicted of second degree sexual assault of a child, was sentenced to six years behind bars along with six years extended supervision following a Feb. 26 hearing in Kenosha County Circuit Court. Before Kenosha County Circuit Court judge Bruce Schroeder, Assistant District Attorney James Kraus said the victim, who is now 17 years old, suffered mental and physical hardship from the assaults, which occurred three years earlier in the Town of Wheatland. “She made a statement that if she lost the defendant, she would kill herself,” said Kraus,

who told Schroeder the victim eventually became the target of bullying when she entered high school. The victim, according to the criminal complaint, was 14 years old at the time of the assaults. The complaint states the victim, who met Schoonover on Facebook two years earlier, told a Wheatland Center School guidance counselor that she was coerced into having sexual intercourse on at least two occasions at New Munster Ball Park in March 2015. The guidance counselor, who was told Schoonover was 17 to 18 years old, immediately alerted authorities of the offenses. Schoonover, now 22, however, was 20 years old when the assaults occurred. The complaint alleges the victim, who suffered an injury

during the assault, feared losing Schoonover as a friend if she told anyone about the sexual acts. According to the victim’s father, who issued an emotional charged statement during the Feb. 26 hearing, the assaults continue his daughter three years later. “That’s a sexual predator of the law!” said the father, who will remain anonymous to protect the identity of the victim. “My daughter has been dealing with this for years.” After his 30 second statement, which left him in tears, he went to the lobby of the Kenosha County Courthouse where a victim witness advocate and Sheriff’s deputy consoled him. Meanwhile, inside the courtroom, Schoonover told Schroeder he did not intend to cause

a maximum 40 years in prison. The lighter sentence did not sit well with the father. After Schoonover’s sentencing, the father said outside the courthouse the sentence “was not enough” considering he faces sentencing in Walworth County on three counts of first degree sexual assault of a child. “I can deal with a murder, anything, but a child molester?” he asked. “They are no good, they do nothing but ruin people’s live, especially little kids,” he said. “You shouldn’t hurt a little kid.” The victim’s mother, meanwhile, recounted her daughter’s attempt to kill herself after Schoonover’s arrest. “We almost lost our daughter because she tried to commit suicide,” she said. “She was in the hospital for almost seven

days because she overdosed on her medications.” While the father believes the sentence was not enough, he and the mother hope Walworth County can impose a harsher sentence, which could be up to 180 years in prison. In Walworth County, Schoonover was found guilty on three counts of first-degree sexual assault of a now-16-year-old boy in Pell Lake five to seven years on Jan. 24. The Walworth County case also involves his brother, Tayler, 22, who was also found guilty on similar charges. St. Patrick’s Day in Ireland was a somber holiday – a holy day of obligation on which stores – even pubs – were closed and people attended church and abstained from meat. There were no parades – and certainly no consumption of green beer, said Kevin Fleming, who has operated Fleming’s in Lake Geneva for 40 years with his wife, Maureen. The Flemings travel to Ireland, from which both sets of Fleming grandparents hail, to buy their merchandise every other year. The store is one of five on Lake Geneva’s Main Street that has stayed in business for four decades and has been in its current location for 26 years.

Fleming attributes the longevity to the ability to change his merchandise mix with economic times and people’s tastes. “You’re always changing,” he said. To that end, and to appeal to summer traffic when wool sweaters and capes are less popular purchases, the store carries a line of clothing that is not from Ireland – a brand from Martha’s Vineyard called Vineyard Vines. The clothing features a whale insignia and has “Lake Geneva” written on it. Though Geneva Lake has no whales, Fleming said, the clothing is popular in the summer when the lighterweight cotton clothing comes out. The store is open seven days a week and stays busy from Memorial Day through Christmas with an uptick around St. Patrick’s Day, Fleming said. Its popular winter items are its Irish sweaters, capes and ponchos. Sterling silver jewelry, children’s sweaters and clothing, Belleek china made in Ireland, crystal, pottery and Irish foods are among its wares. Fleming said the store buys its merchandise mostly from small businesses in Ireland with handmade items such as cutting boards and artwork. “All the companies we deal with are small, family-owned,” he said. Another pottery line Fleming’s carries is Nicholas Mosse pottery handmade in Ireland, Fleming said. The store sells Guinness clothing and artifacts, Irish rugby wear and other sportswear from Ireland depicting its popular sports – “football” (American soccer) and Gaelic football – a cross between soccer and rugby, Fleming said. Among the jewelry the store carries are cross necklaces and bracelets for

First Communion and Claddagh rings. The Claddagh is a symbol that depicts two hands holding a heart with a crown above the heart. The story of the Claddagh is that an Irish sailor taken prisoner forged the ring for his sweetheart while imprisoned, presented it to her upon his release and said, “With these hands, I give you my heart, and I crown it with my love.” The ring worn with the crown facing out indicates one’s heart is available. Wearing the ring with the crown facing toward one’s heart means that person’s heart is taken. Fleming’s carries Claddagh rings with Connemara marble stones. Connemara marble is referred to as Ireland’s gem stone. It is found in the valley of the 12 Bens in Connemara in west Ireland in a range of green tones. The store also sells foods that are common in Ireland such as Barry’s Irish tea, oatmeal and chocolates. He said people who have been to Ireland before and recall the local victuals come to the store for the Irish brands. Much of the store’s clientele are local people of Irish descent and natives of Chicago, which has a large Irish population, he said. Its customers know the history, culture and ancestry of Ireland and will find a few pairs of shamrock earrings, but don’t expect to find leprechauns and green beer in the store, Fleming said. When the Lake Geneva natives visit Ireland every other year, they visit their suppliers at their respective factories, see some friends and relatives who still live in Ireland and then “go out at night and relax and have a pint” of ale-colored beer, Fleming said.

The Feast of St. Patrick

Patron saint of Ireland credited with converting people to Christianity The Feast of St. Patrick, who lived from 387 to 461, is celebrated on March 17 – the date of the patron saint of Ireland’s death. According to Catholic.org, St. Patrick of Ireland is one of the world’s most popular saints. He was born in Roman Britain and when he was about 14 years old, he was captured by Irish pirates during a raiding party and taken to Ireland as a slave to herd and tend sheep. At the time, Ireland was a land of Druids and pagans, but Patrick turned to God and wrote his memoir, “The Confession.” Patrick’s captivity lasted until he was 20 years old, when he escaped after having a dream from God in which he was told to leave Ireland by going to the coast. There he found some sailors who took him back to Britain and was reunited with his family. A few years after returning home, Patrick saw a vision he described in his memoir: “I saw a man coming, as it were from Ireland. His name was Victoricus, and he carried many letters, and he gave me one of them. I read the heading: ‘The Voice of the Irish.’ As I began the letter, I imagined in that moment that I heard the voice of those very people who were near the wood of Foclut, which is beside the western sea – and they cried out, as with one voice: ‘We appeal to you, holy servant boy, to come and walk among us.’” The vision prompted his studies for the priesthood. He was ordained by St. Germanus, the Bishop of Auxerre, whom he had studied under for years, and was later ordained a bishop and sent to take the Gospel to Ireland. Patrick arrived in Slane, Ireland, on March 25, 433. There are several legends about what happened next, with the most prominent claiming he met the chieftain of one of the Druid tribes, who tried to kill him. After an intervention from God, Patrick was able to convert the chieftain and preach the Gospel throughout Ireland. There, he converted many people – eventually thousands – and he began building churches across the country. He often used shamrocks to explain the Holy Trinity and entire kingdoms were eventually converted to Christianity after hearing Patrick’s message. Source: Catholic.org
