For many homeowners, the arrival of fall and winter marks an end to time spent lounging and dining al fresco on the patio. In its 2017 Home Design Trends Survey, the American Institute of Architects found that consumers continue to emphasize practical features that expand the functionality of their homes via heavy investment in outdoor living spaces. The survey found that the popularity of outdoor living spaces increased by 72 percent between 2012 and 2017, highlighting just how much homeowners enjoy spending time

Is that a draft? First, you’ll need to identify the source – or sources – of leaks. Don’t stress – it’s easy! Hold an incense stick near potential draft sources, such as windows and doors. If the smoke blows sideways, you’ll know an air leak exists and it’s time to weatherize. But don’t stop there. Areas such as attic access openings, pull-down stairs and exterior electrical sockets are additional, often overlooked sources of air leaks.
So, now what? Once you’ve identified the leaks, it’s time to stop them. Window and door seals take a beating from normal wear-and-tear and can be a large source of drafts coming into the home. Problems caused by bad lighting can be intensified by using it for longer, something most households should keep in mind, as 74 percent of Americans in a recent survey, commissioned by lighting manufacturer, Signify, say they spend eight hours or more a day under artificial light. The World Health Organization predicts that 50 percent of people will be short sighted by 2050. Unfortunately, there’s a disconnect between people’s concerns about eye health and the steps they are taking to support eye comfort at home. While 80 percent of U.S. consumers in the same Signify survey say they believe good lighting is beneficial for eye health, a 2017 Signify study found only 21 percent take that into account when purchasing light bulbs, and only 29 percent

Why you may be better off
UPDATING YOUR DRYER
There’s nothing quite as comforting as pulling on your favorite hoodie when it’s fresh from the dryer. As much as you love luxuriating in that warmth and softness, you may not be aware just how much energy this beloved appliance burns through in a year. When it comes to energy savings in the laundry room, the dryer has long been an obstacle. Unlike washing machines, refrigerators and other common household appliances, energyefficient dryer models have been absent from the market. It wasn’t until 2014 when the first Energy Star Certified dryers became available. Products that earn the EPA’s Energy Star label are independently certified to save energy.
Before then, dryer technology had stayed pretty much the same for decades. A standard dryer blows heated air into the drum chamber, removing moisture from the clothing. Then the hot, moist air is vented out of the machine (and out of the house). Because of that constant loss of heat, the machine works continuously to resupply the drum with hot air. According to the EPA, the standard clothes dryer uses more energy than any appliance in a typical household, including the clothes washer and dishwasher. It uses even more than the refrigerator. Now that energy-efficient dryers are available, here’s a look at the core technology found in Energy Star certified dryers:
• Moisture sensors detect when your clothes are dry, triggering the machine to end the cycle, saving energy and excess wear on your clothing. • Heat pump technology eliminates the need for venting and continuous heating. First, the air is heated through a condenser, and then it’s blown into the drum and the hot dry air is circulated with the clothes absorbing some of the water. Instead of venting the warm, moist air outside like a conventional dryer, it is pulled out of the drum and through an evaporator, which removes the moisture. Get ready for the cold 10 to-dos for home and yard winterization
Scarves. Pumpkin spice lattes. Leaves crunching underfoot. Sweater season is moving in fast, which means it’s time to start transitioning to fall maintenance to make sure your home and yard are ready for winter. The following are 10 things you can do to prepare for the cold and wet weather ahead.
Interseed your lawn A summer of heavy use can take its toll on even the healthiest of lawns. If your turf has some thin or bare patches, fall is the ideal time to reseed. A turf specialist at a garden shop or university extension office can help you choose the right kind of seed for your local conditions. After spreading the seed, water lightly and frequently (if it doesn’t rain) to keep the soil slightly damp until the seed germinates. For those who live in the warmer, Southern regions of the U.S., interseeding with cool season grass seed can help you enjoy a lush green lawn year-round. Speak with a local landscaper or your university extension office to determine the best timing, seed and process for interseeding with cool season grasses as warm season lawns turn dormant.
Winterize your irrigation system If the ground in your area freezes down to the depth of your irrigation pipes during the winter, be sure to shut off the water to the system and drain the pipes before the first freeze.
Lower your mower blades
Don’t leave your lawn buried under a thick layer of leaves. If you don’t want to rake, try mulch mowing – chopping the leaves up into small pieces allows them to decompose more quickly, so that they fertilize the grass instead of suffocating it. You may need to mow more frequently to keep up with the falling leaves, even if the grass itself isn’t growing quickly.
Clean up your yard Any object that sits on your grass all winter can create a dead spot. To protect your lawn, remove toys, furniture and other items from the grass. Be sure to cover or store
Clean up the salt Salt that keeps sidewalks and streets clear of snow and ice inadvertently gets
tracked inside a home. Hard chunks of salt can scratch wood floors, and, if left to sit, that salt can eventually cause white marks and other stains. Routinely vacuuming and sweeping up salt is necessary to protect wood floors.
Invest in shoe storage Wet or snowy boots can create puddles around the house. Have a special mat or tray by the front door where wet shoes can be kept. A nice bench in the entryway makes it easy for residents and guests to remove their shoes until it’s time to go back outside.
Use water-wicking mats Homeowners will probably need a few extra mats around to tame errant drips and wipe shoes. Any entrance that might be used by people or pets should be protected. Try to avoid petroleumbased, rubber-backed mats, as they could discolor the wood floor. See PROTECT on Page 14

Even though wood floors are durable, and new protective treatments help seal out many of the things that may have damaged floors in the past, homeowners still need to prioritize protecting their hardwood floors. Certain seasons of the year can be more harsh on wood floors than others. For example, seasons characterized by moisture and precipitation, particularly the early spring, winter and fall, can be hard on wood floors.
