For Jim and Stevie Taylor, owners of James R. Taylor and Sons in East Troy, being small business owners in a small town means being part of the community in more ways than just providing a service. “We’re family owned and operated and we’re part of this community,” Jim Taylor said. “We care about the community. We live in the community. We’re happy here. We’ve raised our
kids here. We have a great business here and we want to give back, not just to our customers, but to everyone.” Being a multi-generational business is a source of pride for the Taylors and a testament to their commitment to quality workmanship and community connections. One of the family’s charity efforts is entering its seventh year, the Putting Our Military on Top grant program gifts a new roof to a Walworth County veteran in need. Nominations are open until April 1 with the new roof installed in spring (see sidebar for additional information). Since its inception, six Walworth County veterans have been awarded a new roof. They are: Dennis Bolles, 2019; Ted Cvikota, 2018; Amanda Debaere, 2017; Larry Weber, 2016; Phil Schultz, 2015; and Francis Brady, 2014.

wanted a roof for the haunted house instead of the tarps they had previously used. “Taylor and Sons and O’Leary actually had crews to come set up for us. They paid their guys and brought crews over to help us out, which we couldn’t thank enough,” Jeff McKone said last fall. McKone said the addition of the wood roof was a blessing last year because the bitter weather would have been too much for the tarps. The Taylors have big plans this year with a new program that is still in the planning stages. “We feel like we’re very blessed and just want to give back, and hopefully, starting this year, we’re going to start a scholarship program for people who aren’t going to college or technical school, but want to enter the trades,” Jim said. When he began to think about a scholarship program, Jim said he wanted to do something
EXTERIOR RENOVATIONS THAT CAN IMPROVE HOME VALUE Renovating a home to improve its value can be a smart investment. Interior improvements, such as updating kitchens and baths, offer good return on investment, but there are plenty of exterior renovations that can add value to a home and give it that coveted “wow” factor.
LANDSCAPING
Abundant and well-planned landscaping can instantly boost curb appeal. According to the landscaping company Lawn Starter, 71 percent of prospective home buyers say a home’s curb appeal is an important factor in their buying decisions. As buyers use the internet to look for their dream homes, there’s no denying a beautifully landscaped, nicely photographed property can entice buyers to click and read more about a house.
ADDRESS INSECTS, REPAIRS Improving home value may come down to fixing areas of the home that can negatively affect its appeal to buyers. Hire an inspector to look at key components of the house and recommend what needs to be fixed. This way it is discovered before homebuyers come in and do their own inspections. Termite infestations, deteriorating roofs and hidden water leaks are some things that might need fixing.
IMPROVE THE ENTRYWAY
The front door is the focal point of a home’s exterior. Invest in a new door or paint it a striking color to add appeal. Remodeling magazine’s “Cost vs. Value Report 2019” indicates changing
Knowing which improvements add value to a home can help homeowners tailor their efforts to those that are most financially beneficial. STOCK PHOTO Homes
an entry door to a steel replacement can offer 74.9 percent ROI. In addition to the front door, make sure that the entryway has a level walkway, steps that are in good repair, accents that are free from rust or tarnish, and decorative plants.
OUTDOOR LIGHTING
Outdoor lighting can add to the ambiance of a property and serve as a security feature. Utilize different lights, such as a bright light by the entry, uplighting in trees and shrubs for drama, a lightlined path to the door to improve visibility, and motion-detection lights to improve the security.
FRESHEN EXTERIOR A fresh coat of paint or new (or cleaned) siding can instantly give homes a facelift. Neutral, warm and inviting colors tend to have the widest appeal. Adding manufactured stone veneer to the home can offer a 94.9 percent ROI, says Remodeling. And after doing the front door and siding, investing in a garage door replacement offers the highest ROI of all exterior projects listed on the “Cost vs. Value Report 2019.” This improvement returns 97.5 percent when selling. They worked side by side with us right from conception to the end.” Zess, who owns the East Troy Brewery with
her husband, Ted, said the Taylors made the long construction project bearable with Jim and Stevie’s positive attitudes, which seems to be contagious. “I can’t say enough about them or their workers,” Ann Zess said. “Their workers emulate them. They’re all so kind and considerate. The way they work is just amazing, really. They were such a huge support for us.” “The company is only as good as the guys working here,” Jim said. “It couldn’t be done if we didn’t have the employees that we do.” Some of those employees have been with the Taylors for 20 years, Jim said. “And now, my daughter (Haley) and son (Jim III) are in it,” he added. Haley Taylor is the marketing manager for the company and Jim III is still in high school, but is involved with a work/school program with the company. “We’re the fourth generation,” Haley said. “My cousins, myself and my brother are all involved. This truly is a family owned and operated business and we really do value our relationships with out customers and our community.”
A bit of history James said he is the third generation to own the company and he moved it to East Troy in the early 1980s. The Taylors employ about 20 people, including workmen and office staff. Along with roofing, Taylor and Sons offers remodeling services, with a showroom in East Troy, window replacement, siding, kitchens and baths, and new construction. “We can do pretty much anything in the house,” Haley said. “We have experienced carpenters who are very knowledgeable in the construction field and can pretty much do anything.” “They can come in and we can do plans from the ground up,” Jim added. “We can design and build anything from kitchens and baths to remodels to full houses. With the showroom, it’s kind of like one-room shopping for our customers and we can help them design what they want.” James R. Taylor and Sons is on the East Troy Village Square at 2115 Division St. For more information, call 262-642-7970, visit www.jrtaylorandsons.com or stop by the showroom.
Building a home?
WHAT TO ASK YOUR BUILDER ABOUT LIGHTING hile lighting is an essential piece of new home design; it’s often selected and installed at the end of the building process. What’s more, statement-making decorative lighting is often not part of the initial design at all. “Many builders today are opting for only recessed lighting in new home builds. Not only does this provide inadequate light, it creates a sterile look,” says Jennifer Kis, director of marketing communications for Progress Lighting. “It’s important to consider decorative lighting in the initial budget to highlight all the other accents and purposeful design in your home.” The good news is that today, there are luxury lighting options that suit any budget and lifestyle trend. For example, Progress Lighting offers the Point Dume Collection created by influential interior designer, Jeffrey Alan Marks. Inspired by the California coastline, fixtures in this fashion-forward collection highlight artistic influence and rich finishes. Progress also offers the Design Series, which offers sophistication at accessible prices, along with hundreds of other decorative interior and exterior fixtures. “For the style impact it gives the home, decorative lighting is definitely worth the investment,” says Piper Stromatt, interior designer for Curate Custom Homes in Chattanooga, Tennessee. “We’ve tested recessed-only lighting schemes and our clients immediately sense something lacking in the home’s ambiance. We always recommend
By asking the right questions, you can easily combine form and function when it comes to illuminating your home. Bottom line: You don’t have to settle for recessed lighting alone. STOCK PHOTO Homes

When planning the lighting for your new home, Stromatt recommends asking these questions: • Is the lighting package pre-determined? Often, builders offer a choice of one or more standard packages. Before confirming your selection, ask what upgrades are available, what the costs are, and if there any design limitations. • What’s the wiring plan? Pre-installed junction boxes, or pancake boxes, offer less flexibility, as light fixtures must be installed wherever junction boxes are. If your plan doesn’t include decorative lighting, ask for the home to be snake-wired, which gives the flexibility to add lighting wherever and whenever you want. • Are LED light bulbs an option? Often a builder has already selected bulbs, and they’re not always LED. Even if it adds to the cost, the investment to substitute LED bulbs is worth it, providing energy savings, brighter light and longer life. including decorative lighting, as it increases the perceived value of the home as well as offers a finishing touch.” Be sure to discuss the lighting plan during your design phase. Once the build has started, it may be more expensive to make changes. When talking lighting with her clients, Stromatt emphasizes these key points: • Layer a combination of task lighting with decorative lighting. A properly layered lighting scheme creates comfort, functionality and beauty. • Decorative lighting should be installed closer to eye level than functional recessed lighting and reinforce the home’s unique design. As the single focal point for each living area, decorative fixtures define a space, which is especially crucial in open floor plans. • Avoid installing recessed lighting in rooms where flattering and comfortable light is necessary, such as overhead in the master bathroom or in a nursery where high-wattage lights can be uncomfortable for baby’s eyes.

Hot trends in kitchen remodeling Year after year, the most popular home improvement project for American families remains the same: remodeling the kitchen. Today, kitchen makeovers are more ambitious than ever, with homeowners willing to spend larger budgets to upgrade both the aesthetics and the functionality of what is, after all, the most used room in the house. “Many architects, designers and homeowners are specifying hardwood as an essential part of any kitchen refresh,” notes Linda Jovanovich, of the American Hardwood Information Center. “That’s because wood not only offers a wide variety of looks and design possibilities, it also exemplifies the kind of material today’s environmentally conscious consumer wants:
One that’s renewable, sustainable, plentiful, durable and easy to work with – all of which makes it an excellent return on investment.” Replacing tired old kitchen cabinets with stylish new ones is a favorite starting point, but there are several strategies to help maximize their impact. “I like to specify one type of wood for an entire kitchen – cabinetry, furniture, millwork and flooring – but use different stains and finishes on each element,” says New York designer Laura Bohn. “That creates visual interest without losing a sense of overall unity.” In one all-walnut kitchen project, for instance, Bohn painted the Shaker-style cabinets a putty tone for a serene background. But she
stained the wide-plank floor a darker shade than the granite-top island so that the latter stands out like a beautiful piece of furniture. In a similar vein, a recently completed 1920’s Bungalow house renovation had quartersawn white oak used throughout for floors, interior doors and kitchen cabinets. While the floorboards were lightly whitewashed and given a protective coating to create the look of bare wood, the base cabinets, supplied by Plain & Fancy Custom Cabinetry, received a slightly darker cerused finish just different enough to distinguish them from the rest of the woodwork. The oak wall cabinets • continued on page 18

How you can help protect wild birds in your yard
Planting native species on your property is one of the most impactful ways you can improve your local environment, as well as make your lawn and garden a healthy habitat for wild birds and other fauna. Native plant species provide birds with food and places to rest and nest. Birds in turn, spread pollen and seeds, while acting as a natural pesticide. Speaking of which, gardening organically will also go a long way to protecting the health and safety of feeding birds. ALL-AMERICA SELECTIONS Homes

Special window decals that reflect ultraviolet sunlight, a wavelength of light noticeable to birds, have been proven to substantially reduce the likelihood of bird strikes. Giving the appearance of slightly frosted translucent glass but glowing like a stoplight for birds, those from WindowAlert feature a range of decorative patterns. To boost protection for birds, you can also apply a high-tech liquid called WindowAlert UV Liquid in between decals. You may not think about it often, but wild birds use your lawn as a rest stop and place to call home. As you spruce up your lawn and garden for the season, there are simple steps you can take to protect them and help them thrive. According to Spencer Schock, founder of WindowAlert, makers of bird-friendly products for homes, the following changes are easy to implement in order to create a safe harbor for wild birds:

What’s trending in bathroom design? Sensational showers
Unique locations
A homeowner’s bathroom location desires are no longer limited to the property’s existing plumbing and drainage systems. Saniflo technologies use above-floor plumbing with
Freestanding tubs
For those homeowners who still enjoy a good soak, say goodbye to jetted tubs with apron surrounds. Freestanding tubs are the ultimate in luxurious bathing, providing a focal point that draws the eye in any bathroom while also creating an airy feeling in the space. If a homeowner wants to install a freestanding tub where no drainage currently exists, a Saniflo system is an affordable way to complete the project in less time. Learn more at www.saniflo.com.
Color and styles
After avoiding white color palettes for some
time, white on white is back in 2020, offering a clean look with sleek appeal. Mixed materials are often used to add visual interest, such as a tasteful blend of wood and metallics in the vanity or hardware choices. Contemporary styles with clean lines and open spaces are key characteristics of the modern bathroom. When a splash of color is called for, blues dominate the cool tones and salmons often infuse warm hues.
Vanities and tops
Vanities vary in size and shape depending on space. Designs tend to be modern or transitional, with elements of interest such as sliding doors that mimic the barn-door trend. Floating vanities are favored, adding an upscale feel that opens the space. Vanity tops are made from a host of materials: as granite loses steam, quartz, marble and concrete are increasing in popularity. Finally, when space allows in a master bath, double sinks are a must. • continued on page 15

Every year brings with it trends in home design. For 2020, the bathroom is a standout space with customizable features that simplify and beautify life.
HOMES & DESIGN • HOME BUYER, OWNER & RENTER
When it comes to bathing options, showers are the focus. For instance, four in five homeowners upgrade the shower during a master bathroom renovation (83%) and over half increase the shower size (54%), found the most recent U.S. Houzz Bathrooms Trends Study. Some homeowners are eliminating the tub altogether, adding multiple showerheads and steam features for maximum relaxation.
features such as a macerating toilet and drain pumps that can be hidden in closets or behind walls. This means previously impossible spaces – such as in garages, pool houses and attics – can now be transformed into stunning bathrooms. The Saniaccess3 is a smart choice for full baths, and the Saniaccess2 is ideal for powder rooms.
MARCH 2020
Adding or remodeling a bathroom is a popular home improvement project in 2020. Whether it’s a simple powder room, a useful three-quarter or a grand master bath, it’s worthwhile to research the top trends so you can create a space that is functional while also increasing your home’s overall value.

• on the garden path from page 11 Make sure each plant you select provides the greatest return on investment by including winning varieties with a visit to the All-America Selections website (all-americaselections. org). This non-profit trialing organization has test sites across the US and Canada that trial and select winning varieties for their taste and garden performance. Review your favorite recipes and consider growing the ingredients you need on a regular basis. Salad lovers may want to plant a container of greens that can be harvested daily. Sandy Lettuce and colorful mild flavored Red Kingdom Mizuna are slow to bolt, extending the harvest into warmer months. Add some super nutritious Prizm kale for your morning smoothies and salads. Prizm’s stemless stalks releaf quickly after harvest so you’ll have a continuous supply. Fill a corner of the garden or container with a small-fruited tomato or two for salads, snacking and other daily treats. Red Celano grape tomato (a determinate for containers) and the lightyellow sweet Firefly tomato (an indeterminate for vertical or staked gardens) are attractive and very productive, ensuring more than enough for
your whole family to enjoy. Add a bit of crunch and color by growing Roxanne radishes. And don’t forget the cucumbers. Green Light cucumbers are seedless, sweet and prolific – great for salads or a refreshing summer drink. Keep a constant supply of these ingredients by making small plantings throughout the season. Grow several containers of tasty and attractive Delizz strawberries. These everbearing plants will provide a pretty pot of fresh strawberries throughout the summer for your morning oatmeal or afternoon glass of wine. Plant unusual vegetables you can’t purchase at the grocery store. Roulette pepper has the look and citrusy flavor of a habanero without the heat. And you won’t find anything like Yellow Apple tomato at the store. It has small unique apple-shaped fruit with a citrusy sweet flavor that’s perfect for snacks or stuffing with cheese. Dedicate some space for those vegetables that are more expensive to buy than grow. Green peppers are a bargain in the summer, but the yellow, orange and red ones can cost two to three times more. Reduce the wait time and
increase your enjoyment with early maturing colorful peppers like Orange Blaze or the yellow sweet peppers like Cornito Giallo, Escamillo or Just Sweet. If you plan to freeze, dry or can your harvest, make sure to reserve some time during harvest season for picking and preserving. Select disease resistant productive varieties like Early Resilience Roma Tomato so you’ll have plenty of produce to preserve. This is your year to produce a garden filled with just enough family favorites and unusual varieties that are less expensive to grow than buy. MARCH 2020
Ceramic and porcelain tile is often the choice for the modern homeowner who can customize tile with any design they want. Large tiles are less desired, with smaller mosaic options a common choice for personalization. For those who feel tile is too hard or cold, engineered vinyl is a leading choice. It can be made to mimic the look of wood surprisingly well, but can handle the moist environment that typically comes from a bathroom.

Technological enhancements have entered virtually all aspects of life, and the bathroom is no exception. This is more than just streaming music to waterresistant speakers. In 2020, more homeowners desire digital shower controls allowing temperature adjustment and flow of the water through voice commands. For those with the funds, smart toilets open and close by sensor and are self cleaning. Another growing tech trend is chromatherapy – the use of color to enhance and inspire mood – with technologies used to illuminate tubs and shower spaces.

Today there are many automated options that make homes more comfortable, energy efficient, cost-effective and safe. Typically referred to as smart home technology, these features may include automating control of items such as lighting, temperature, window shades, surveillance cameras, locks, smoke alarms, even pet feeders. Often, these features have smartphone apps that allow the homeowner to control them from anywhere. One technology that is so smart it can save the lives of everyone in the home, including pets. It works independently and an app is not needed – home fire sprinklers. Smoke alarms warn you if there is smoke in your home, but your escape depends on your hearing the alarm and your ability to act on it. Fire sprinklers are smart because they automatically control or put out the fire quickly so everyone can get out of the home safely. Each sprinkler has a temperature-sensitive component, often a glass bulb that works like a plug. If a fire starts, the high heat from the fire, usually between 135 and 165 degrees Fahrenheit,
breaks the bulb, allowing the water to flow onto the fire. Typically, only the sprinkler closest to the fire activates, not the entire system. Smoke from burnt food or smoking materials can’t activate the system, only high heat. The sprinklers are typically connected to the household water main. Where there is no city water supply or well water available, a tank and pump can be used for the water supply. Piping is hidden behind walls and ceilings. One or two sprinklers can usually protect an average size room. Home fire sprinklers are small and inconspicuous. There are several kinds of sprinklers made for residential use, some of which can be hidden behind cover plates. Some sprinkler companies will offer custom-painted options to match your home’s decor.
Faster burning
Fires today are faster and deadlier. A house fire can become deadly in less than two minutes. Why? Because most items in our homes are made of synthetic materials that burn quickly
and produce deadly, poisonous smoke. There’s a danger associated with new construction homes built with unprotected, lightweight building materials that burn faster and fail more quickly in a fire, collapsing in less than half the time of older construction material. Large open layouts (as opposed to smaller rooms with closing doors) also enable faster flashover during a fire. Could everyone in your family escape a fire if it happened in your home? A home fire occurs every 87 seconds, with 74% of all fire deaths in the home (NFPA 2018). Everyone is susceptible to these fires, but older adults and people with disabilities are at greatest risk. Recent trends in U.S. housing show that more homes are becoming multi-generational, with around 64 million people living together with two or more generations under one roof (Pew 2018). And today 67% of households own a pet (APPA 2019). Two minutes is not much time for everyone to escape a deadly fire. Learn the facts about home fire sprinklers from the nonprofit Home Fire Sprinkler Coalition. (BPT)

Wellborn Cabinets demonstrated this strategy at a recent kitchen and bath show where their Rustic Global Spice Kitchen incorporated not only two types of hardwood – oak and maple – but also three door styles each with its own stain.
“To make this look succeed, you or your designer will need to find common stylistic threads running through the various elements underlying kinships of shape, color, texture and proportion that will pull the disparate parts together into a unified whole,” advises San Antonio-based designer Melissa Morgan. “It’s takes a certain amount of confidence, but the results can be spectacular.” For more about kitchen remodeling and other applications and products using American hardwood, visit www.hardwoodinfo.com.
