A SUPPLEMENT TO WISCONSIN HI-LITER
Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2017 GIFT GUIDE • SECOND EDITION
Deck the halls hether you’re hosting or just trying to get into the holiday spirit, preparing your home doesn’t have to be daunting or expensive. Check out these five tips for getting your home in tip-top holiday shape on any budget from the experts at Dollar General
Deck the dining table Get your dining table holiday-ready by purchasing staple décor pieces that can be rotated throughout the year. Fill glass vases with seasonal items such as ornaments, holly, faux snow or pinecones. Add extra light and warmth to the table with a flameless LED pillar candle. Place tea lights in small vases filled with cranberries, holly and water for an inexpensive and festive way to decorate the table.
Decorate the tree If you’re looking for a fun way to get kids involved in holiday decorating, purchase plain ornaments for them to design with paint or pens. Clear ornaments can be filled with glitter or tinsel to create a unique look for your tree. Decorated ornaments also make great and thoughtful gifts. Embellish your tree by adding red or burlap ribbon from the top of each side and adding a topper. Then, consider coordinating the color scheme of your tree with gifts, using those that were wrapped early as decor throughout your house.
Deck the front door
Make a DIY wreath by gluing bows or pinning ornaments to a foam wreath. Designing your own door decor doesn’t have to be expensive, and it will allow you to add your own personal touch to your home’s entryway. Complete the look with festive outdoor lighting. Affordable options are available at such variety stores as Dollar General.
Design a festive mantle Decorate your fireplace mantle for the holidays without spending much time or money. Wrap a garland in mini string lights and hang leftover ornaments to continue the theme from your tree. Create handmade bows to place at each end of the mantle using your choice of ribbon. If you don’t have a mantle, you can create a fireplacelike space with a cluster of string lights or LED candles in a nook of your home. Then, remember to hang the stockings.
Create a cleaning game plan The holidays can be fun, festive and messy. Create a day-by-day cleaning game plan, focusing on one area of your house at a time. This will save you stress and allow you more time to get organized. Be sure you’re stocked up on all your holiday prep cleaning supplies, including sponges, microfiber cloths and wet mop refills. For holiday savings, you can sign up for Dollar General digital coupons, which offers a $1 off coupon when you sign up. Create an account by visiting dollargeneral.com/ coupons or through the DG mobile app. Remember, getting into the holiday spirit doesn’t have to break the bank. Save time and money decorating your home, so you can spend more stress-free moments with friends and family. (STATEPOINT)

make great gifts for kids this holiday season
Add joy to the holiday season with exciting books for kids. Think about choices focusing on STEAM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) that encourage the pursuit for knowledge and offer opportunities for immersive, learning experiences. Here are a few fun ideas:
Ultimate book of knowledge Packed with information, “DK Children’s Encyclopedia” explains virtually everything! Each entry features a key topic explained in a visual way, with fun facts and cross-references, revealing the links between subjects. Virtual reality
A visual reference for kids that explores the natural world in stunning detail, “Explanatorium of Nature,” created in association with the Smithsonian Institution, is the first in a brand new book series. Through close-ups and cross-sections, exploded images, X-rays and more, the book explores everything from fruit to flies, coral to clouds, and mountains to mammals – and is a nice tool for
Created in association with an educational virtual reality company, “Virtual Reality,” explores the history of VR and includes an app download for five VR experiences and a cardboard viewer with stickers to make it your own. Kids can come face-to-face with a T. rex, look inside a volcano, explore the Roman Colosseum, hop aboard the International Space Station and peek under the surface of a pond.
Using freely available software, “3D Printing Projects” provides inspiration and step-by-step visual instruction for simple builds and complicated pieces, from small treasure boxes to chess sets and model cars. This how-to guide covers such subjects as designing, scanning, modeling, digital sculpting, slicing and printing. Information on the 3D printing revolution and the science behind how it works is also included. This holiday season, give the gift of knowledge and fun, with great books that explore the world.
Gift and stocking stuffer ideas for those with active hobbies
It’s the gift-giving season and rather than give generic presents to everyone you love, consider thoughtful items that will make their lives easier and hobbies more fulfilling.
Travelers
Travel lovers on your holiday shopping list? Frequent fliers will appreciate customized luggage tags that will make spotting bags a cinch. Add comfort to all those redeye flights with a memory foam neck pillow. Newer models even offer features like pockets for smartphones and built-in earbuds.
Runners and dog walkers
Not everyone is exploring the neighborhood in the dark, but runners and dog walkers often are, especially when days are short. Consider brightening their way to make adventures safer with a headlight. For bright light of up to 180 lumens, the Energizer Vision HD headlight is an affordable, practical stocking stuffer. To light the path for both owner and pet on those wintry nights, the headlight features three light modes and pivoting functionality to direct light where one
needs it. It’s also weather resistant and drop-tested up to 1 meter to stand up to harsh conditions. Running at sunset or at sunrise, an innovative smartdimming feature provides users with maximum run-time to brighten handsfree activities at any time of the day.
Yogis
There are many great gift options for those who love yoga. Consider a personalized yoga mat, which you can design through an online site that lets you upload any image you want to create a meaningful gift. Select a picture of a beloved pet or a rendering of their favorite piece of artwork for a truly unique yoga mat. Or, help them take their practice to the next level with a gift certificate to a studio offering advanced classes, such as hot yoga or aerial yoga.

Cooking up something

Great holiday gift ideas for foodies
The holiday season is the perfect opportunity to outfit foodies with all the tools they need to make cooking more efficient and delicious. Not sure where to start? Here are a few smart ideas.
Promote precision
A good kitchen scale will help chefs get more precise when measuring solids and liquids in baking and everyday meal prep. But a great kitchen scale will go beyond that. For example, the IQ Smart Wireless Nutrition Scale, when used with the KitchenIQ Food App, lets users count calories, carbs, fat, fiber, protein, sodium and other nutritional elements. While prepackaged food labeling lays out nutritional data, it can be a lot harder to track these specifics in home-cooked meals. Whether your gift recipient is dieting or simply wants to more accurately track the nutrition of the foods he or she cooks and eats, this can be a useful kitchen tool.
Personalize accessories
Cooking is more fun in a kitchen that truly feels like one’s own. Help personalize the space of your gift recipient. Monogrammed kitchen utensils and baking trays make wonderful gifts, as do personalized aprons, oven mitts and kitchen linens. Remember that a personalized order may take more time to reach its destination, so order these items with time to spare. Get inspired on Pinterest and craft your own items, or seek out the handiwork of independent artisans on a site like Etsy.
Save space
No matter what size kitchen you’re outfitting, the best items are those that are space-saving because they are multifunctional. Consider gifting an all-in-one kitchen tool, such as the Kitchen IQ 3-in-1 Prep and Measure Tool, which is at once a measuring cup, a citrus reamer and a gravy separator. Its stackable design further saves on storage space.
Sharpen up
When knives and scissors grow dull, simple kitchen tasks can become a big hassle, and in some cases, even dangerous. Help keep tools sharp and highly functional with a knife sharpener designed to sharpen and maintain both straight and serrated knives, as well as scissors. One versatile model that works for both left- and right-handed sharpening is the Diamond Pro 2 Stage Knife and Scissor Sharpener, which features a non-slip bottom for stability in use. This holiday season, give your favorite home chefs great tools that add form and function to their kitchens. (STATEPOINT)

Tips to reduce holiday spending, without cutting back on cheer mid the merriment of the holiday season is a hard reality – nearly six in 10 Americans don’t have enough savings to afford an unexpected expense like a $500 car repair or $1000 emergency room bill, according to a Bank survey conducted by Princeton Survey Research Associations International. While 83 percent of U.S. consumers are expected to spend $1,189 this holiday season, an amount equal to or more than they spent last year, there is no reason to enter the new year in bad financial standing if you do some smart planning and spend wisely. Here are some great ways to reduce your seasonal spending, without cutting back on the cheer.
Know your limit
Figure out how much you can spend on gifts, decorations, etc. Divide the total amount into a pergift limit. If it doesn’t add up, cut back the gift list or consider making a baked item or other homemade gift, or giving a gift certificate for a service you might provide, such as babysitting, car washing or house cleaning.
Shop wisely
Watch for special sale days and coupons. Many online retail sites offer free shipping, discounts and other promotions during the holiday season. After the holidays, look for deep sales on wrapping paper and greeting cards to save for next year’s celebrations.
Spend differently
New ways to pay for items can make the task of budgeting organized and straightforward. Check out specialty e-retailers like Purchasing Power, which is offered by many employers as a voluntary benefit, and gives workers an opportunity to shop for thousands of
brand name products they need now, for which they can make manageable payments over time through payroll deduction. With no credit checks, hidden fees or interest, it’s a service you may find gives you more flexibility over a traditionally expensive season. “It’s not always possible to pay for big ticket items in-full when you need them, whether you’re buying a tablet for your teenager for the holidays or a family vacation package next summer,” says Elizabeth Halkos, Chief Operating Officer for Purchasing Power, LLC. “We created this solution to empower people to budget more wisely, and buy the things they need, while avoiding penalty fees and ballooning interest associated with other payment options.” Ask your employer if an employee purchase program and financial wellness benefit like PurchasingPower.com is available to your workforce. Some additional cost-friendly options for the holidays: • Suggest a family gift exchange. Spare the expense and frustration of trying to find gifts for each member of your extended family. Instead, pull names from a hat and find something special for just one person. For extra fun, play “Secret Santa,” keeping gift-giver identities concealed until the gift exchange. • Spend time together. In lieu of gifts, bring everyone together over the holidays. Have a board game night or a day of service, such as serving meals at a shelter. • Enjoy the season. There are many ways to celebrate spending little to no money. Curl up for a holiday movie marathon, bake cookies or look for free holiday concerts in your local area. Shopping malls and community centers typically offer a schedule of no-cost holiday entertainment. For a better financial start in the new year, spend wisely this holiday season. Smart budgeting and new payment options can make it easy.

1/3 cup roasted red peppers 1 teaspoon Sriracha hot sauce Directions Preheat oven to 450 degrees F. Place crab in the bottom of a large casserole dish, large enough for all crabs to fit in an even layer. Crack all leg shells. The body should be broken up into about six smaller pieces, so that the marinade can seep into the meat. To create the marinade, in a small bowl, combine the olive oil, harissa spice mix, mashed garlic cloves, 1 tablespoon of orange juice and 1 teaspoon of lime juice and stir. Pour marinade over the crabs and toss with your hands to evenly coat. Be sure they are well coated. Place in the middle of the preheated oven. Roast for 10-12 minutes. Flip once or twice, so that the crab cooks evenly. While the crabs are roasting, place the mayonnaise, red peppers, hot sauce, 1 tablespoon of orange juice and 1 teaspoon
of lime juice in a blender jar. Puree until smooth. To serve, place casserole in the center of table for guests to help themselves, and pass bowls of the red pepper sauce. Serve with lots of napkins.

To create a delicious and memorable experience at your holiday gathering, seek some inspiration from the vintners and chefs of one of the most impressive wine and food destinations worldwide, Napa Valley. One of the iconic winemaking families from the Valley, the Cakebreads, share their recommendations. When it comes to red wine, the fresh, fragrant aromas of red and black cherry, raspberry and tea-leaf spice found in the 2015 “Two Creeks” Pinot Noir (SRP $44) can provide an elegant accompaniment to your meal. This cool-climate Pinot Noir complements seared tuna, roast turkey, pork tenderloin and hearty root vegetables. For your white wine, consider the vivid creamy aromas of green and golden apple, pear and citrus with supporting scents of oak spice found in the Napa Valley Chardonnay 2015 (SRP $40), which pairs nicely with chicken, shellfish, seafood and grilled salads.
