Truck Off Saturday at McHenry County Fairgrounds From burgers and brats to queso and caprese, food truck fest delights all appetites

The Fourth Annual Truck Off is set for savoring from 5 to 11 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, at the McHenry County Fairgrounds, 11900 Country Club Road, Woodstock. Featuring 40 food trucks with names like My Mama’s Donuts, Kissed by Fire and Your Sister’s Tomato, the salivation spectrum is deliciously diverse, said Erica Burke, president and CEO of McHenry County Living and Truck Off founder. “MCL polled our readership to find out what sort of fresh events they wanted in McHenry County. A food truck festival came out on top, and so Truck Off was born,” Burke said. “Now, many of the truck operators create special-edition menu items for our event!” Having launched Truck Off in 2017, McHenry County Living is co-organizing it this year with the McHenry County Fair Foundation. This year’s Truck Off pays tribute to first responders. Police, fire and emergency personnel, as well as their spouses and children, are admitted free in honor of the 9/11 anniversary. Attendees of all stripes will find that enticing scents, mouth-watering menus and thirst-quenching libations aren’t the only attractions at Truck Off. Billed as America’s Greatest Mind Reader, Joe Diamond will wander the crowd with other conjurors and mystics. A vendor market will be on hand. Family-friendly games and activities are planned. And, in the evening, GOOROOS opens for headlining band 7th Heaven. Admission costs are $10 for a presale general admission ticket or $20 for a VIP presale ticket, available at truckoff. net, where a complete list of confirmed vendors and other event details also are located.
Tickets will be $5 more at the gate. General admission is free for children who are 12 and younger. VIP admission is free for children 2 and younger. VIPs are admitted to the grounds an hour early and receive two free drink tickets each. A portion of admissions and 100 percent of drink sales benefit the fair foundation, Burke said. “Ever since our inaugural event, we recognized the importance of giving back to the local community,” Burke said. “Truck Off has raised more than $12,000 for McHenry County charities.” Burke said the partnership between MCL and the fair board began after Truck Off immediately outgrew its space on the Woodstock Square. The food truck fest has taken place at the fairgrounds since 2018. But the bond truly gelled after both event organizers — like their counterparts everywhere — suffered a challenging 2020, which saw Truck Off and other events canceled. “As we both reimagined events and our overall visions after that difficult year, it became clear that we both bring key strengths to the table that would make for a great partnership for Truck Off,” said Susan Simons, secretary of the McHenry County Fair Foundation. “Our organization has elevated our events,” she continued, “and Truck Off fits nicely within our vision to grow our fundraising for McHenry County Fair infrastructure, educational activities and entertainment.” To mitigate the spread of COVID-19 during Truck Off, social distancing will be encouraged and hand-sanitizing stations will be present at the outdoor event. The venue, at Independence Grove Forest Preserve in Libertyville, will now be open with special hours from 4–9 pm on Thursday evenings through October 28. Last year, rather than losing participants due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Annual Walk for Suicide Prevention and Awareness gained traction, with the number of walkers up even though the event was online. Members of the Lake County Suicide Prevention Task Force, including the State’s Attorney’s Office, hope the momentum continues for the 9th Annual Walk for Suicide Prevention and Awareness. This year’s walk, which will again be a virtual event, is planned for Saturday, Sept. 25, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. “We noticed more involvement. The pandemic is helping the community to be more aware of mental health and be informed about how to prevent suicide,” said Health Educator Sandra Gomez of the Lake County Health Department. “In 2019, we had 135 people attending the walk. Last year was virtual and we had more people, 155. Woman charged with aggravated battery after headbutting Sheriff’s Deputy
On September 4, 2021, at approximately 1:45 a.m. a Lake County Sheriff’s Deputy conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle in the area of Sunset Avenue and Lewis Avenue, Waukegan, for traffic violations. The driver, Viviana Mora, 25, of the 600 block of 2nd Street, Waukegan, was found to be driving under the influence of drugs.
The sheriff’s deputy placed Mora under arrest and placed her in the backseat of his squad car. Mora became belligerent and out of control. She attempted to kick out the squad car windows and took her seatbelt off. Sheriff’s deputies attempted to place Mora’s seatbelt back on and she headbutted one of the deputies in the face, causing minor injuries to the deputy. The deputy was treated and released by paramedics. After arriving at the Lake County Jail, Mora continued being belligerent and refused to follow the instructions of sheriff’s deputies and correctional officers. Mora continued her combative demeanor with correctional staff and subsequently pepper sprayed. After reviewing the facts and circumstances of the incident, the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office approved the following charges: aggravated battery to peace officer, resisting arrest, DUI – drugs and numerous traffic infractions.
School bus driver arrested on child sex charges
Richard Villanueva, a 57year old Waukegan resident, was arrested Tuesday, Aug. 31 by the Waukegan Police Department on criminal sexual assault charges against a minor relative.
On August 24, 2021, the Waukegan Police Depart-
ment received information from the victim, who is now an adult, about repeated occasions of sexual assault over Richard a period of Villanueva several years when the victim was still a child. Villanueva was brought in by the Waukegan Police Department for questioning and thanks to the hard work of the investigations division they secured corroborating statements from the defendant. The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office worked with the Waukgean Police Department to quickly issue charges for Villanueva. Lake County State’s Attorney Eric Rinehart applauded the work of the Waukegan Police Department’s Investigations Unit and his Assistant State’s Attorney’s (ASAs). “Nothing is more important than the safety of our children. I want to thank the Waukegan Police Department for their effective investigation and our ASAs who reviewed this case in the Sex Crimes Unit. Our prosecutors and victim advocates will ensure that the victims in this case get all the support that they need and that the defendant faces justice for his actions.” State’s Attorney Rinehart said. A Lake County judge set Villanueva’s bond at $750,000 and he is scheduled to appear in court again on Sept. 21. As this matter is subject to on-going investigation, any parent of a student that may have encountered the defendant is encouraged to speak with their child. Fatal motorcycle crash under investigation
On September 5, 2021, at approximately 5:30 p.m., Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a motorcycle crash with injuries on Rollins Road west of Route 45, in Avon Township. Sheriff’s deputies arrived and located a 2006 Yamaha motorcycle in the ditch line south of the roadway. Deputies located the rider of the motorcycle, a 19-year-old man of Round Lake Beach, unconscious and not breathing. Sheriff’s deputies attempted life-saving measures until paramedics arrived. The driver succumbed to his injuries and was subsequently pronounced deceased at the scene.
Preliminary investigation shows the driver of the motorcycle was traveling eastbound on Rollins Road, west of Route 45. The driver was in the inside lane and made a lane change to the outside lane, but drove slightly off the roadway onto the gravel shoulder. This caused the driver to lose control and crash into the ditch line. The driver was thrown from the motorcycle and sustained major injuries. The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Unit and Lake County Coroner’s Office.
Man apprehended with dozens of fraudulently reencoded cards
On September 2, 2021, at approximately 11:30 a.m., Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to a gas station in the 36700 block of North Route 41, Unincorporated Gurnee, for a suspicious circumstance report. An alert gas station attendant became suspicious after the driver of an Isuzu box truck put $1,000
worth of diesel fuel into the truck and utilized two separate credit cards to do so. The clerk knew a small box truck of that size would not take $1,000 worth of diesel fuel and it was odd the driver used two credit cards.
The clerk alerted their supervisor and their supervisor also became suspicious, as the store had recently been scammed during a similar situation. The driver of the box truck left the gas station and the supervisor followed the box truck, after calling 911. The supervisor was able to inform sheriff’s deputies as to the location of the box truck. Sheriff’s deputies located the box truck in the area of Delany Road and Sunset Avenue in Gurnee. Sheriff’s deputies activated their emergency lights in an attempt to conduct a traffic stop, but the driver initially did not stop. The driver threw a bag out of the window prior to stopping. The driver, identified as Ernesto Fallat, 52, of the 1100 block of North Monticello Avenue, eventually stopped and was arrested for numerous traffic violations. Sheriff’s deputies recovered the bag Fallat threw out the window and discovered dozens of gift cards with a magnetic strip, which were likely fraudulently reprogrammed with the credit card information of unknowing victims. Sheriff’s deputies also discovered the box truck was holding several containers equaling approximately 1,000 gallons of diesel fuel. The system was rigged so Fallat could look like he was filling-up his truck with diesel, however, the diesel would go directly to the containers inside the truck. Fallat was subsequently charged with: identity theft, attempting to flee/elude, and several traffic violations. Sheriff’s detectives continue investigating, in an effort to identify potential victims who had their credit card data stolen and fraudulently used. The Illinois State Police will be conducting an inspection of the Isuzu to determine if there are hazardous material violations. Additional criminal charges are likely.

State’s Attorney’s Office secures large sentences in two sex cases
Two recently convicted men face over a century in prison for separate offenses as State’s Attorney Eric Rinehart intensifies the office’s focus on prosecuting violent and sexual crimes. D’Javon Hudson, 28, of Zion and Wojciech Dzierzanowski, 49, of Lake Forest, face a combined sentence of 109 years in prison after prosecutors secured two critical trial victories in 2021. Wojciech Hudson was arrested in the early Dzierzanowski morning hours of Sept. 21, 2017, after Zion police responded to a stabbing in a victim’ apartment. On arrival, police found a man with over 20 stab wounds and a woman who had been sexually assaulted. The man was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. He survived, and both victims testified at Hudson’s bench trial in July 2021. On Aug. 17, Circuit Judge Mark D’Javon Levitt sentenced Hudson to serve 70 Hudson years total in prison for the crimes of home invasion, aggravated sexual assault, and attempt first degree murder. Because these three charges are Class X felonies, Hudson will serve 85 percent the 70 years.
Prosecutors said Dzierzanowski had both sexually and physically abused a child victim from roughly age 7 to age 15. The victim eventually disclosed the abuse in therapy. Both of the victim’s parents gave victim impact statements at the end of the trial. On Aug. 23, Circuit Judge Victoria Rossetti sentenced Wojciech Dzierzanowski to 39 years in prison on multiple counts of both Predatory Criminal Sexual Assault and Aggravated Criminal Sexual Abuse. Rossetti found Dzierzanowski guilty on all counts in late April 2021. “My job is to make sure our best prosecutors are getting the resources they need to secure justice for the survivors of crime. By telling violent offenders that they will face decades in prisons at the hands of focused prosecutors, we are making the county safer,” Rinehart recently said. Rinehart has created a new Violent Crimes Investigative Unit, created a tracking system for felony DUI cases, hired a Chief of Victim Services, and is working to fast-track victimless cases in misdemeanor courtrooms. “No crime is too small to hold individuals accountable. I have small business owners in my family who could not afford to be stolen from. But why do we need to have endless court dates for a retail theft? Every court appearance for a prosecutor is time that she or he is not interviewing a witness, visiting a crime scene, or preparing for trial,” he said The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office also submitted its first budget under the new administration. Rinehart and his First Assistant, Sharmila Manak, have specifically asked the County Board for more prosecutors in the Violent Crimes Investigative Unit, more victim-witness counselors, and a new investment in crime-fighting cyber technology. “Governments cannot ‘do it all’ on limited budgets. For the first time, this office is successfully fast-tracking victimless cases so that we have time to check and double-check our work on more complicated matters,” State’s Attorney Rinehart said. “Violent crimes, which includes sex crimes, are our top priority.”

In July of 2021, an agreement was reached between the sheriff’s office and Captain James Lovell Federal Healthcare Center (FHCC). Through this agreement, FHCC provided the Lake County Jail an iPad that will allow Veterans the opportunity to be connected faceto-face to social workers and other crucial personnel at the VA. Often times, incarcerated Veterans are unaware of the benefits they have earned through their military service. Having access directly to the VA has helped several inmates learn of assistance opportunities waiting for them when they leave our
facility. As incarcerated Veterans prepare to leave the jail and reenter society, the communication and information they learn from their VA representatives allows them additional opportunities and get a head-start on their reentry. This oneon-one interaction between inmates and VA personnel will allow for just that. Sheriff John D. Idleburg said, “The fewer repeat faces we see inside the jail, the better. We do not want the jail to have a revolving door. By allowing our Veterans the opportunity to use some of their incarcerated time to connect with VA representatives, we are providing them yet another tool to be successful when they reenter our community.
