Mosaic Players fall tour kicks off Saturday ‘On the Verge’ perfomances open at Parkman Pavilion Sept. 4, 5
The Mosaic Players’ fall tour will kick off on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 4 and 5, with a chimerical comedy by Eric Overmyer called “On the Verge or The Geography of Yearning”. The performances will be at Lindenhurst Park District’s Parkman Pavilion, followed by performances at the Lake Villa District Library, Antioch Township Center, and Antioch’s Williams Park Pavilion. “On the Verge” follows three Victorian era female explorers as they discover “Terra Incognita” and later realize they’re actually traveling forward through time into the 21st century. The independent and intrepid explorers encounter eight diverse beings throughout their journeys, all played by the same actor. There are two casts available for performances throughout the next few months. Meghan Lane and Susie Perkowitz play Mary, a woman who considers travel her unequivocal calling; Jennifer Drinka and Cristianna Formeller play Fanny, the most socially, politically, and morally conservative member of the group; Jamie Lee and Bonnie Hart play Alex, who is enthralled by new discoveries; and Chris Riter and Josh Formeller play eight different characters ranging from Fanny’s husband, Grover, to a Yeti in the Himalayas. The artistic team for On the Verge by Artistic Director Rebecca Zellar. Gretchen Grassl is providing research and context as Dramaturg. Christi Nicholson is collaborating on costumes with the cast. Connie Wurster is helping with props, stage design, and stage crew. Clara Riter
is providing backstage support to the production. On the Verge will be opening up the Fall Touring Season for Mosaic Players at Parkman Pavilion, located at 2200 Grass Lake Road in Lake Villa, IL on September 4 and 5 at 2 p.m. On September 19, On the Verge will be performed at the Lake Villa District Library (140 Munn Road, Lindenhurst, IL). On September 25, 26, October 2, and 3, On the Verge will be at the Antioch Township center located at 1625 Deep Lake Road in Lake Villa, IL. On October 23, the Mosaic Players will perform the production at the Williams Park Pavilion in Antioch, IL, located at 400 Williams St. in Antioch, IL. All shows begin at 2 p.m. and performances are free to the public with a suggested donation of $20. If you would like to donate to the Mosaic Players, please visit mosaicplayers.org. Masks mandated indoors in Illinois; vaccines required for teachers, health care workers State warns of decreasing intensive care bed capacity amid latest surge
The statewide mask mandate indoors is back, and educators and health care professionals will be required to receive the COVID-19 vaccine, Gov. JB Pritzker announced Aug. 26 amid an ongoing surge in the pandemic that first arrived in Illinois in March 2020. People will be required to wear masks indoors, Pritzker announced. That mandate began on Monday. The vaccine requirement, which goes into effect Sept. 5, will apply to “all P-12 teachers and staff, all higher education personnel, all higher education students, and health
care workers in a variety of settings, such as hospitals, nursing homes, urgent care facilities and physician’s offices,” Pritzker said at a news conference. “Effective Sept. 5, individuals working in these settings who are unable or unwilling to receive their first dose of vaccine will be required to get tested for COVID-19 at least once a week, and IDPH and (the Illinois State Board of Education) may require more frequent testing in certain situations, like in an outbreak,” he said. Illinois Department of Public Health Director Dr. Ngozi Ezike said the state is seeing 220 hospital admissions per
day, a number on par with a surge in May. Pritzker said 98 percent of cases, 96 percent of hospitalizations and 95 percent of deaths since January have been among unvaccinated people. While vaccines are the best defense, Ezike said, “wearing a mask continues to be one of the simplest, cheapest ways to reduce the spread of COVID-19.” Intensive care bed availability in southern Illinois is at 3 percent, he said. “That’s because the regions with the lowest vaccination rates are the regions where there are fewer hospitals, and lower hospital capacity,” Pritzker said. “And those hos-
pitals are sometimes the least well equipped to handle cases as they become more acute.” He added, “We are continuing to rely on experts at the (U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) and (Illinois Department of Public Health), but you don’t need to be an epidemiologist to understand what’s going on here. This is a pandemic of the unvaccinated.” The current vaccination rates—nearly 53 percent of the state’s population is vaccinated—“are not enough to blunt the ferocity of the delta variant,” which has led to hospitals “again fighting the battle that we had hoped would be behind us by now.”

The Lake County Health Department and the McHenry County Department of Health want to remind residents that the best way to prevent COVID-19 infection and severe illness is to get vaccinated. Health officials are urging residents to follow recently updated Illinois Department of Public Health and CDC guidelines which recommend every person, including fully vaccinated individuals, wear a mask in public indoor settings where community transmission levels are “substantial” or “high.” Both Lake and McHenry Counties are experiencing high levels of community transmission as defined by the CDC following significant increases in cases over the past month. “While it is important that we all take increased precautions during this time, the best thing you can do to protect yourself and others is to get vaccinated” said Lake County Health Department Executive Director Mark Pfister. “The increases that we are seeing in hospitalizations and ICU bed use are being driven primarily by unvaccinated individuals.” “We’re just a couple of months away from flu season. With COVID-19 cases increasing, we cannot afford to overburden our health care systems,” said Melissa Adamson, Public Health Administrator of McHenry County Department of Health. “The recommendation to mask up will stay in place until we see a substantial drop in community transmission of COVID-19.” According to CDC guidance, in addition to masking indoors, fully vaccinated individuals who have been around someone who has COVID-19 should get tested three to five days after exposure, even if they don’t have symptoms. Those who test positive should isolate for 10 days. Health officials encourage anyone 12 years of age or older to get vaccinated against COVID-19 as soon as possible. On August 19, 2021, the Living Room Wellness Center officially expanded its operations, and is now open seven days a week, all year, for anyone in Lake County experiencing increased mental health symptoms or near-crisis due to emotional distress. The Living Room Wellness Center offers free-of-charge crisis intervention, peer counseling, personcentered safety and crisis planning, as well as basic needs like healthy food, clean showers, and transportation. A significant milestone of this expansion is that law enforcement will now have the option of bringing people to the Living Room Wellness Center for treatment and care rather than to jail. People in need of care will have the opportunity to have access to safe and professional services centered toward their needs, versus going to jail. The initial phase will be limited to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office and its COAST program. Members of COAST have interacted with 1,634 residents living with mental symptoms. COAST will leverage the Living Room Wellness Center to ensure efficient coordination of services to those that require it. This availability will eventually expand to other law enforcement agencies and will be a new option available to law enforcement officers, which they did not necessarily have before. Man held without bond in first degree murder, attempted murder case
Juan Carlos Garibay, 42, is charged with shooting to death one man and seriously injuring another after an attack in the 1400 block of Lorraine Place in Waukegan. During a Saturday morning hearing, Lake County Circuit Judge Michael Betar granted Assistant State’s Attorney Jason Humke’s oral motion to hold Garibay without bond. Humke stated in court, “Both victims were at the garage of the residence working on a vehicle when Garibay approached and opened fire on them.” ASA Humke elaborated that Waukegan police obtained the defendant’s cell phone and were able to put him within the vicinity of the crime. He also indicated that Garibay is still on parole from a previous conviction. Garibay was convicted in 2003 for second degree murder and sentenced to 15 years to be served at 50%. According to witnesses, Garibay arrived at the location masked and carrying a firearm. After shooting one man in the back and one man in the head, Garibay fled in a car. Humke indicated that, given Garibay’s past history and the witnesses in the case, “the state believes he is a clear and present danger to the community,” and should be held without bond. Under the current law, a court can hold someone without bond if the charges fall within a narrow class of offenses. First degree murder with a firearm and attempt first degree murder with a firearm qualify under the law. The investigation is ongoing and the Waukegan Police and Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office have been cooperating since Thursday evening. State’s Attorney Eric Rinehart expressed sympathy for the families of the victims. “We are praying for the families of both victims and for the full recovery of the injured victim. The State’s

Former Correctional Officer charged with custodial sexual misconduct
On August 20, 2021, a former Lake County Sheriff’s Correctional Officer was arrested for custodial sexual misconduct and official misconduct.
In December of 2020, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office of Professional Standards initiated an investigation after learning Elizabeth A. Blomstrand, 40, of the 100 block of Knob Hill Lane, Gurnee, was possibly involved in rule/ policy violations. At that time, a different correctional officer went to a jail pod to relieve Blomstrand for the evening. At the time the relief correctional officer entered the pod, an inmate was found to be out of his cell, well after all of the inmates should have been in their cells sleeping. This raised concerns and the relief correctional officer notified his supervisor. After hearing the preliminary details, Sheriff John D. Idleburg authorized a formal internal investigation into the matter. Blomstrand was placed on administrative leave when the investigation commenced, but she resigned on December 29, 2020. Although she resigned, the investigation continued and changed to a criminal investigation when evidence of criminal conduct was discovered. The investigation resulted in showing Blomstrand engaged in sexual contact with an inmate at least two times in December of 2020. The investigation consisted of interviewing correctional officers, inmates, viewing video surveillance, and

reviewing inmate telephone calls. Following the investigation, the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office reviewed the facts and circumstances of the case. On August 20, 2021, the state’s attorney’s office drafted an arrest warrant for two counts of custodial sexual misconduct (class 3 felonies) and two counts of official misconduct (class 3 felonies). A Lake County Judge authorized the warrant and set Blomstrand’s bond at $50,000.00. On August 20, 2021, members of the Sheriff’s Warrants Team began surveillance in an area Blomstrand was believed to be. A short time later, Blomstrand was observed driving in the area. Warrants Deputies initiated a traffic stop and took Blomstrand into custody without incident. She was initially processed at the Lake County Jail, however, is being held at the McHenry County Jail, due to her prior employment. Sheriff John D. Idleburg said, “We are responsible for enforcing the law, following the law, and keeping people safe, including our inmates. I have zero-tolerance for anyone within our ranks who violate the law and the public’s trust. This former employee certainly does not represent the values of the hard-working men and women within our organization.”
Investigation results in reckless homicide and aggravated driving under the influence arrest
On Saturday, June 5, 2021, members of the Fox Lake Police Department responded to a multi-vehicle fatal crash at Illinois Route 12 and Big Hollow Road, Fox Lake Illinois. Based on the severity of the collision, the Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team (MCAT) was requested to assist in the investigation. Based on the investigation, it is alleged that John Buckley, a 57-year-old resident of the 24000 Block of Thornberry Drive, Plainfield, Illinois was driving his Infinity 2014 QX80 SUV, south on Illinois Route 12 attempting to turn onto westbound Big Hollow Road at a high rate of speed. Buckley lost control of the vehicle while attempting to negotiate the right turn striking the driver’s side of a 2017 GMC Acadia, stopped at a red light in the eastbound to northbound left turn lane. The GMC Acadia was being operated by Stephen Kaman, a 72-year-old Fontana, Wisconsin resident. His wife Lynn Kaman was a passenger in the vehicle. Stephen Kaman died as a result of the injuries he received during the collision. Pursuant to a search warrant, a sample of Buckley’s blood was collected and analyzed for alcohol content. The result of the analysis was a 0.117 BAC, over 5 hours after the collision. During the investigation multi-
ple witnesses reported observing the Infinity QX80 driving recklessly, at a high rate of speed, Southbound on Illinois Route 12, approaching Big Hollow Road just prior to the collision. The following charges were approved by the Lake County States Attorney: Reckless Homicide Class 2 Felony and Aggravated Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol, Class 2 Felony. On August 23, 2021, Buckley surrendered himself to the Fox Lake Police Department and was processed. He appeared in a Lake County Bond Court via video court. His bond was set at $500,000 (10% applies). He was unable to post the required bond and subsequently transported to the Lake County Jail.
Single motorcycle crash under investigation
A 50 year old Wonder Lake woman and a 56 year old McHenry man are in critical condition following a single-vehicle crash in unincorporated Nunda Township last Wednesday evening. On August 25, 2021, at 6:06 p.m., members of the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office, Prairie Grove Police Department, McHenry Police Department, Nunda Fire Protection District, McHenry Fire Protection District, Cary Fire Protection District, and Crystal Lake Fire Department responded to the 2600 block of Justen Road in McHenry for a single motorcycle crash. Preliminary investigation indicated that a 2003 Harley Davidson motorcycle, being driven by the McHenry man, was traveling northbound on Justen Road in McHenry. For unknown reasons, the driver failed to navigate the curve in the road, resulting in the motorcycle leaving the roadway and crashing, causing both riders to be ejected. The driver and passenger of the Harley Davidson were transported by ambulance to Northwestern Hospital in McHenry. The driver was later transported to Advocate Condell Hospital in Libertyville where he remains in critical condition. The passenger was later transported to Loyola University Medical Center in Hines where she remains in critical condition. Neither rider was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. The investigation is ongoing by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Major Traffic Crash Investigation Unit.

Preliminary investigation shows four men wearing facemasks and gloves entered the home and demanded money from the women. One of the men took a kitchen knife and forced money from one of the victim’s. The four offenders then fled to a vehicle in the vicinity and left the area. Sheriff’s deputies and detectives continue to actively investigate. They are seeking video surveillance and speaking with potential witnesses. There is no current description of the offenders or getaway vehicle.
