Piano professor celebrates 45 years of teaching
College of Lake County (CLC) faculty and staff made a scene in downtown Grayslake with their car parade celebrating music instructor Kathleen Cizewski’s 45 years of teaching excellence. The new traditional socially distanced car parade led by CLC President Dr. Lori Suddick marked the special occasion. “Your experience at CLC has played a role in the college’s success,” said Suddick. “Your skills have helped so many students enhance their skills and gain confidence in themselves.” Suddick’s remarks also acknowledged all the ways the college relies on her, including her historical knowledge of the music department, dedication to upholding studio recitals for students every semester and strength in mentoring students who need extra nurturing and guidance. “I have met some wonderful people teaching through the decades, growing with them personally, musically and spiritually,” said Cize-
wski “I encountered various challenges, generational shifts, technology and world events during my tenure including new and innovative pedagogical methods I incorporated into my teaching curriculum to better student success.” Since 1974 when she was hired on the spot after impressing the college’s first music department chair, Warren Simpkins, with her piano skills, Cizewski taught hundreds of students in both applied and group piano lessons. While a music instructor at CLC, she has completed her own advanced degrees, gave several of her own faculty solo piano recitals and served as an accompanist for a variety of choirs, instrumentalists and musical events at CLC. “Anyone who listens to Kathleen’s stories knows she has devoted her life to the college,” said dean of communication arts, humanities and fine arts Sheldon Walcher. “She is really remarkable because her journey is

the story of CLC: hard work, dedication, joy, belief, connection and serving others.” “If there comes a day when I don’t leave a class with a ‘high’ I will know it is time to think about retiring,” said Cizewski. “I am not there yet. God willing, I will continue to grow with CLC.” Cizewski’s husband of 41 years and music teacher himself, Felix, has been part of her CLC journey. He continues to be supportive, attends performances and talks with many wonderful students, faculty and administrators. He is also a music teacher who took percussion lessons at CLC and played in the college’s wind ensemble under the direction of Bruce Mack in the 80s. Even in the face of obstacles like COVID-19, Cizewski remains completely dedicated to her students, her craft, making music and serving her community. She relies on “PR” - Prayer and Resilience to continue her longevity as one of the college’s beloved faculty.

Man arrested after home invasion, battery of 20 and 13year old
On July 10, 2020, at approximately 10:30 a.m., Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched Russell to the 25400 block of West Brengman Route 173, Unincorporated Antioch, for an aggravated domestic battery in progress. The offender, Russell D. Brengman, 52, of the 4900 block of Pioneer Road, McHenry, fled prior to the arrival of sheriff’s deputies. Sheriff’s deputies spoke to the victims, a 20-year-old male, and a 13-year-old female, both of whom reside at the residence. The victims report-
Sheriff’s Office announces traffic safety campaign results were issued in conjunction with the “Click It or Ticket” traffic safety campaign. From June 15 through July 6, 2020, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office worked with over 200 other state and local law-enforcement
agencies to arrest impaired drivers, encourage seatbelt usage, and keep our roadway safe. The effort featured high-visibility enforcement combined with a variety of outreach activities including a media campaign.
The enforcement period was funded by federal traffic safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation as part of the statewide “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” and “Click It or Ticket” programs.

A 69-year-old Genoa man has died as a result of a motorcycle versus car crash that occurred late Saturday morning in the 13500 block of Illinois Route 176 in Woodstock. On July 11, 2020 at 10:42 a.m., the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office and Woodstock Township Fire/Rescue District responded to a two vehicle crash involving a 2008 Toyota Corolla and a 2018 Harley-Davidson Motorcycle that had crashed on Illinois Route 176 west of Dean Street in unincorporated Woodstock. On scene investigation indicated the Toyota had been pulling off to the north side of the roadway to turn around. For unknown reasons the Harley Davidson drove to the north of the Toyota and struck the rear passenger side of the Toyota causing the rider to be ejected from the motorcycle. The driver of the Harley-Davidson, the 69-year-old
ed Brengman, who is a relative, but does not live at their residence, forced his way into their home armed with a rifle and a machete. He pointed the rifle at both victims and accused the 20-year-old of stealing a cellular telephone from him. Brengman then struck the 20-year-old victim several times with the blunt end of the machete and also struck him with the barrel of the rifle several times. He then struck the 13-year-old victim with the rifle. The 20-year-old man was transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The 13-year-old victim did not require hospitalization. Sheriff’s deputies located Brengman at a construction worksite in the 26200 block of West Channel Avenue, Unincorporated Antioch. He was taken into custody without incident. Both the rifle and machete were located and collected as evidence. After reviewing the facts and circumstances the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office approved the following charges: Two counts of home invasion (class x felonies), two counts of aggravated domestic battery (class 3 felonies), aggravated unlawful use of a weapon (class 4 felony), and possession of a firearm without a FOID card (class 4 felony). Brengman was being held in the Lake County Jail pending his initial court hearing. All defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.

Sheriff’s office investigating fatal motorcycle accident
Genoa man, was transported by ambulance to Northwestern Hospital in Huntley where he was later pronounced deceased. The driver of the motorcycle was not wearing a helmet. The driver of the Toyota, a 31-year-old Lisle woman did not sustain any injuries. That area of the roadway was closed for approximately four and a half hours. The investigation continues by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Major Crash Investigation Unit and the McHenry County Coroner’s Office.

In September of 2019 a victim, who resides in unincorporated Gurnee, came to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office to report she was being harassed and stalked online. The victim stated nude photos of her were sent to her family members and friends. The Lake County Sheriff’s Cybercrimes Unit conducted an investigation which revealed in 2016, when the victim was a minor, she met someone online. The person she met online claimed to be a 16-year-old boy. The two communicated for several months online and the victim felt she was in a quasi-relationship with the ’16-year-old boy.’ During their communication the victim was enticed to send nude photos and videos of herself, to the ‘16-yearold.’ After several months of communicating back-andforth, the victim stopped communicating with the other per-

Man who shared child pornography apprehended

The person threatened her, telling her if she didn’t send additional nude photos and videos, he would send the nude photos he already possessed of her to her family and friends. The victim refused to comply, and the person then began disseminating nude images of the victim to her family and friends. The investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Cybercrimes Unit revealed the person the victim was communicating with was Howard M. Hickey, 56, of the 8500 block of 64th Street, Kenosha, Wisconsin. Lake County Sheriff’s Detectives worked with Kenosha Police Department Detectives and obtained a search warrant for Hickey’s home on July 1, 2020. Lake County Sheriff’s Detectives assisted Kenosha Police on the execution of the search warrant on July 2, 2020. During the search warrant Hickey attempted to destroy an electronic device. Following the search warrant, Hickey was charged in Kenosha County, Wisconsin with: three counts of possession of child pornography, three counts of distribution of child pornography, felony stalking, and obstructing an officer. Hickey was initially held at the Kenosha County Jail and was released on bail after posting $20,000. Sheriff John Idleburg said,

On June 16, 2020, Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to a retail store in the 25900 block of Elizabeth Mach Riverwoods Road, Mettawa, for a report of a battery. Sheriff’s deputies determined the victim, a 50-yearold man, checked out at the checkout counter and was in the process of exiting the store when he removed his facemask. After removing his facemask Elizabeth H. Mach, 45, of the 500 block of Vine Avenue, Highland Park, rammed her shopping cart into the victim’s cart. Mach began yelling at the victim that he needed to put his mask back on, as he was not yet outside of the building. The victim ignored Mach, but Mach continued yelling stating, “I am a schoolteacher and I have COVID-19.” Mach then removed her face covering and spit in the face of the victim. She then fled from the scene in her vehicle. Following an investigation sheriff’s detectives were able to identify the woman. On July 8, 2020, Sheriff’s Detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Mach for
two counts of battery and one count of disorderly conduct. A Judge set the bond amount on the warrant at $40,000. Sheriff’s detectives arrested Mach at her residence without incident on July 8, 2020. Mach posted 10% of her $40,000 bond in the evening on July 8, 2020, and is next due in court on July 29, 2020 at 9:00 a.m. in courtroom T110. All defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.

COVID-19 cases rising among younger Lake County residents The Lake County Health Department is reporting an upward trend in new Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) cases among teenagers and young adults in the past weeks. Since June 25, 2020, cases reported in Lake County residents under age 30 have been rising while cases in the general population have remained steady. “During our case investigations, we are finding that many young people who attended social gatherings with their friends have become infected with COVID-19,” said Dr. Sana Ahmed, Medical Epidemiologist for the Lake County Health Department. “Youth are just as likely as adults to get and spread this virus, and your risk is higher if you and those you spend time
with are not following social distancing, handwashing, and masking guidelines. We ask that everyone continue to take these risks seriously and contact the Health Department if you think you have been exposed. We need your help to keep this virus under control.” The Lake County Health Department is working closely with Lake Zurich High School after multiple cases were identified among athletic camp participants. At the recommendation of public health officials, Lake Zurich High School has suspended athletic camps until further notice. Participants of the poms, football, and baseball camps have been asked to self-quarantine for 14 days. The Health department is also working with Vernon Hills High School
after an individual participating in athletic activities tested positive for COVID-19 last week. Thorough case investigations and contact tracing are underway at both schools to identify cases and assure that any students and staff who were in close contact with a confirmed case are quarantined, monitoring for symptoms, and getting tested if they are determined to be at risk. “We urge our students, parents, and the entire community to respond immediately if you are contacted by the Lake County Health Department, as time is very critical in our contact tracing process,” said Dr. Ahmed. “Our staff is here to provide you with guidance and support. Your assistance in the process helps us slow

Community briefs Snowmen on the Chain runs through September 15
The Antioch Chamber announces the return of their Charity Public Art Program. Beginning July 15 and running through September 15, 2020, they will host Snowmen on the Chain (of Lakes)! What is a Charity Public Art Program? It’s a program comprised of Artists, Sponsors, Art Patrons, and you - the Public - who enjoy seeing unique art in a leisurely setting. After enjoying a summer season of these unique art pieces, they will all be sold at a live auction and money is donated to local charities and to support Antioch’s Holiday Programs! This year’s feature is 30 handcrafted wooden, flat snowmen for Snowmen on the Chain. These Snowmen will be scattered throughout Antioch for you to visit beginning July 1 through September 7, 2020. Each month they will host a new contest for your chance to win prizes! In September, all 30 Snowmen go on the Live Auction Block at their Charity Dinner Auction. Proceeds from the live auction benefit local charities and Antioch Holiday Programs! (More info to follow regarding Dinner Auction date.) In the past, 2010-2014, the Antioch Chamber had been able to donate over $68,000 to charity, so make sure you come join the fun. From July 15 through September 15 you’ll find a map and begin searching for
the Snowmen on the Chain as you begin monthly scavenger hunt contests Each month there is a new contest to enjoy! Search through the Snowmen that matches your clues on the contest form. Everyone turning in their completed entry forms to the Antioch Chamber has a chance to win $100 in Chamber gift certificates! Snapology Camp Descriptions: Snapology STEAM Club What do you get when you throw slime, games, earth science, crafts and sports activities into a camp and mix it all in with a big helping of fun? It’s Snapology’s Fun for Kids Camp where campers get to try a variety of S.T.E.A.M. based activities. New friends, games, creative projects, physical activity and zero screen time. Aug. 10-14, 2-5 p.m., ages 6-12. Drone Commander In Snapology’s Drone Commander program, students will be introduced to the world of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and develop a deep understanding of how to control and manage this exciting technology.
In this workshop, children will learn about the types of UAV’s, the parts needed for controlled flight, basic drone safety, and a variety of flying maneuvers. This exciting program will give your child the chance to safely test out some of the newest advances in robotics and really take their knowledge of engineering to new heights. July 20-24, 2-5 p.m., ages 7-12 years. STEM Survivor This program will put your students’ design, building, and critical thinking skills to the test. They will be given daily challenges to design a functional solution. They will earn challenge wins with group voting and speed. The goal of this program is to encourage our students to carefully work through the engineering design process to see how often they can design with a purpose. July 27-31 2-5 p.m., ages 6-12. Sports Science In this camp, children will learn the science behind their favorite sports. Students will learn about momentum, energy, measurement, air pressure, and much more as they perform simple experiments related to sports. McHenry County Historical Society offering online geneology workshop July 18
By now we are acutely aware of all the negatives the coronavirus has brought to our shores. But one positive is time – time to reorganize the garage, time to plant a garden, time to research one’s past. Delving into one’s family history can be a tall order and, quite frankly, a bit overwhelming. But genealogist Craig Pfannkuche of Memory Trail Research in Wonder Lake is ready to guide you through it. “The first thing is to talk to your parents and grandparents, if they are still alive – and then don’t believe a word your parents say! Check it all out,” Pfannkuche said with a laugh. “Nobody want to talk about divorces, criminals and illegitimate children but that is part of family history. The family stories play an important part in what to do with this stuff.” Property records provide an important opportunity to unravel these secrets. Often, when a person dies, the family property is passed on to the owner’s married daughter. Pfrannkuche said one can, by looking at the records, discover married family members who cannot be found in the “Index to Illinois Marriages.” In his own family’s history, Pfannkuche said an adult child was “blackballed” by her siblings because she, and not other family members, got the property. His parents never once mentioned that married daughter’s family name until he stumbled upon it in the property records. Pfannkuche will present a “Tracing Your Family Roots” online workshop at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 18. The interactive program is $5 for Society members, $10 for nonmembers. Participants may also buy an optional Archival Genealogy Kit for $25, which may be picked up at the historical museum in Union or shipped to your home. The storage repertoire includes one, lettersize document case; three, letter-size file
folders; two letter-sized archival envelopes; five sheets of bond paper for interweaving in archival applications; Micron red pen, ideal for scrapbooks and archival recording; a No. 2 pencil, for writing archival labels and tags 15 presentation pockets – five each of 8 ½ by 11 inches, 5 by 7 inches and 4 by 6 inches. This talk will take place virtually via ZOOM. While one can use a “Property Index Number (PIN)” to find information about a specific piece of property, Sidwell maps are useful in finding neighborhood properties – even if a specific address and/or PIN number is not known. Pfannkuche said most family research records became available online about four year ago – from land ownership to cemetery plots. Add to that the digitization of newspapers, obituaries and family scrapbooks, at places such as the McHenry County Historical Museum’s Research Library, and uncovering ones’ roots has never been easier. Family trees continue to proliferate online, as do images. But are these techminded biographers bothering to manage that potential treasure trove of information properly? Probably not. “They take these photos on their phones and when their phone dies their photos die, too,” Pfannkuche said. “That is a really serious problem in the modern world.”
Voting by mail changes for November 2020 election Public Acts 101-641 and 101-642 were signed into law by Governor Pritzker on June 16, 2020 changing some provisions to the election process only for the November 3, 2020 General Election. These changes will be repealed on January 1, 2021. Due to COVID-19, we are encouraging all voters to vote by mail and avoid lines during early voting or on Election Day. Feel safe in the comfort of your own home and vote from there. Some of the voting by mail changes include: • Expanding the period of time when voters can submit
an Application for Ballot. Applications can be submitted beginning June 16 instead of the original date of August 1. • Enabling voters to submit an Application for Ballot through email. This is in addition to the already-existing mail, in person delivery, or electronic methods. • Mailing of an Application for Ballot by the Lake County Clerk to those who registered to vote or changed their name on their voter registration record between March 18, 2020 and July 31, 2020. • By August 1, the mailing of an Application for Ballot by the
